    Great tutorial, Blake! Yes Linear Light is a superior blend mode for this kind of work. For absolute colour-control I use the Luminosity blend mode on a Curves adjustment instead of a 50 % filled layer nowadays. Not only do I avoid any colour-shift that way but I also get a total control over local contrast with the Curve at the same time! On top of that the Curve adjustment protects the absolute blacks and whites from clipping in the histogram ( as long as the white and black points are untouched in the Curve tool ). This way I can fine-tune my curve to make sure my “Burning” is going to have less or more contrast, -and the same goes for the “Dodging” of course. Would you agree?

    Thank you for this tutorial and the brilliant action, Blake. I have been using PS since version 2 and have been watching tons of tutorials befor but never heard of this method. For me, the results are much more pleasant than with soft light. Keep up the good work!

    WOW! GAME CHANGER! I cannot tell you how often I have struggled with skin tones after I dodge and burn on the traditional gray layer in Soft Light. You are absolutely correct. Color do get over saturated easily. I often would put the blend mode to Luminosity in hopes that the color stay true or reduce the flow of the dodge tool. Your explanation and examples were fantastic. This is exactly what I needed. No one has even taught how Linear Light affects photos (except to sharpen in High Pass). Thank you for this. Anxious to try it out now.

    Blake Great tutorial and great explanation.
    I downloaded the actions and one small change I would recommend for anyone using the "Flavors" is to modify the actions to first Select Layer "Quick D&B". This way if you move off that layer and then decide you want the "Dark Flavored" or "Light Flavored", etc it will apply the Blend If to the correct layer.
    Thank You.

    This is awesome, thank you! I love d&b and also prefer the grey layer over the two layers with masks option. I have also noticed that both the curves and the soft light method is often oversaturating skin tones, particularly when burning newborn skin which is quite red to begin with and I’m hoping that this method will help prevent that. I will try this tomorrow 👍

    I think you should change the title from, "You are dodging and burning all Wrong!" to "Are you dodging and burning just one way!" I played around with this technique a number of years back and like it for certain situations and dislike it for others. I use this technique, along with 50% soft light, and my personal favorite is using curves. The most important thing to remember!
    With some pictures, you might experience "color shifts". Some People use the curves and 50% fill layer set to luminosity or linear light to avoid these shifts. I recommend against it because adding light SHOULD affect the color. (If you look at a blue pen in the dark it will look gray, but move the pen into the light and you see blue.) So light, in fact, make everything become saturated. A hue/sat adjustment layer allows me to control HOW MUCH the light is going to affect the saturation.
    When you blend it "Linear light" or "Luminosity" it doesn't affect saturation at all and everything can start to look grayish after a while if one isn't careful.
    Love your videos.

      It's a common technique here on YT, to make the titles catchy. I'm just not brave/confident enough as a beginner to use these words. I just say quick, easy way or things like that in my titles.

    Great technique! But you're right: Lots of things to remember. I'm waiting to see the difference from just duplicating the actrual image layer and just dodge and burn the copy of the original layer. You guys are so good at making things harder. Haha!!!

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, not really. The problem with duplicating the layer and D and B on that is that it is not conducive to a layered workflow. Anytime you add a duplicate copy or a stamped layer you can really only work above it and the work below it is not as important anymore. This way you can maintain a healthy layered workflow.
      Its not harder, its smarter ;)

    Another cool stuff. I noticed that too, the colors tend to shift a little bit, either it will be more saturated or discoloration when you do dodging and burning too much in that particular area. Is this works with curves adjustment layer as well?

    Great work Blake, is this going to be added to your Dodge & Burn Pro Panel? or should I just use the action separately?🥰😀👍👌

    • @f64Academy
      @f64Academy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily. But you can still use the idea with that panel, just have to change the blend modes.
