- Mike demonstrates how to turn a pocket pill box from a small scrap of wood. This is a fast, easy project makes a much appreciated gift to easily carry a couple of pills in your pocket. Change the dimensions and it could be a traditional needle case or even a toothpick holder.

Having now made a few similar boxes (for sewing needles) some threaded and some just a push fit, I've found my wife enjoys having some input on the final external design which gives her much greater ownership of the final product

I've made a few of these before watching your video. I made my tenons too short and the lid doesn't stay on. I like your jam chuck for reversing the bottle and finishing the bottom. Great video, Mike, I learned a lot. Thanks.
Glad you like it! Yes, the key to a good fit is a longer tenon than I would ever put on a larger box. It creates a piston fit which tends to keep it secure.

Great project - pill container, or needle box for those who engage in some kind of needle work, or just a trinket box to hold 'stuff'. Easy and quick - the only tricky part is sizing the tenon to fit the recess in the cap.
My experience on sizing the tenon is that it is best to fit the cap is to get close with a skew, and then finish the job with sandpaper. Taking the time to do it right avoids the need to do it over.
Excellent advice to install the bit with the chuck off the lathe - I've actually broken bits by tightening down on a jacobs chuck when the bit wasn't exactly centered.
Did you flip the cap end for end? I usually part off the cap and flip it to drill out from the cut end so that the grain is continuous between cap and body. But if you are scrap-limited, you could use a contrasting material to make the cap. All design choices.
I try to avoid sanding to fit based on advice from better box makers then me. ONly on these pill boxes do I hollow the cap and part off. On small pieces I have not had a problem with grain alignment based on the wood I am using. Lots of ways work.

A necklace is an interesting option which will present new challenges to keep the lid on.
As an old retired pharmacist, I would recommend leaving nitro in original glass container, It looses its strength otherwise

Very nice Mike. I noticed you have a Laguna lathe now. Did you get rid of your Powermatic? How do you like it? And how does it compare to your Powermatic?
No I still have my PM. The Laguna was for teaching. The Laguna is fine for most things. It is hard to make a comparison with a big lathe like a PM3520 with a 2HP motor and weighing 5 times as much.

Hey Mike, What would you say is the problem when the edge of your bowl or cup or whatever is not the same thickness all around. it seems to me that it's not centered but I'm not sure.
Sounds like the object is not running true after reversing. Issue could be your tenon or recess, the softness of the wood affecting the compression, Another possibility is wood movement as the green wood drys. Are you twice turning to allow the roughed object to dry before returning?
Really enjoyed this one Mike. Do you think this could be made from an acrylic blank as well?

@@ronh9384 Yes, I think adding texturing would be more difficult on acrylic. I do not think this style of pillbox would be better with threads. More trouble to take the top off. If you sold them, I do not think you would be able to charge for the extra time. The box would need to be bulkier to add threads.

A great project Mike. Thanks for the great tips. I think I’ve noticed you use Acks paste a few times, are you finding it better than your abrasive paste? I just made another batch of abrasive and I am getting better results than I was previously. Maybe my turning is getting better. Thanks again Mike.
