Just using the tool rest as a lock for the wrench was all I needed! I had thought about doing that but wasn’t sure if I might break something. But that allowed me to get both hands on the chuck and really turn it, which is all I needed. Thank you!

Hi Mike, I got my adapter so stuck after a catch I had to go to HF and buy a comically large wrench, but it did the job. Keep well, Rob

I keep about a 12” 1x1 handy to use between the jaws or if the jaws are still holding something an adjustable oil filter strap wrench works good too.

I use an old rake scraper, It has always worked well.

I put a thin piece of circular plastic between the chuck and spindle. Haven’t had a stuck chuck since.

My G3 binds up from time to time but my GO838 spindle does lock - so pretty easy to "break" it free - always remember to loosen the reverse grub screw first, if one is used.

When the chuck is direct threaded it is easier as there is no insert to unthread.

I use a large rubber washer or one cut from an old inter tube on the spindle of the lathe. I found the hard plastic ones cause my chuck to freeze on the spindle. I will also put a film of graphite or a very light film lithium grease on the spindle. However, the grease means constant cleaning the spindle because of wood dust. The best I have found is graphite. When the Chuck gets stuck, I use an old wrench that I found that is very thin to hold the chuck adapter and insert a 12”-18” piece of wood in the jaws and tighten them down. Then I hit the end of wood with what ever I have handy, a hammer, a mallet, a piece of pipe, etc. That usually does the trick freeing up the chuck.

Interesting Mike. I have a couple wrenches that fit my spindle lock nut and the hex on the back of my scroll chucks that I can use to remove the chuck from my lathe.

I need to find some appropriate sized stamped steel wrenches. Adjustable wrenches are too thick to fit for me. The Record Power inserts do not have flats so require their wrench,

Been using the the thin Nylon washer that Crafts Supply sells for 20 years now and have never had a chuck lock up or has caused any compression or distortion.

@@MikePeaceWoodturning Back when I started turning I used the Nylon washer on my mini lathe but I felt that the lack of a solid metal-to-metal contact allowed vibration of the chuck. As you say, different strokes...

I am a bit reluctant to put a steel bar into my chuck jaws but a piece of 1/2 in wood works well for me. A strap clamp can also be useful.

I use an oak board 1/2 thick by 1 3/4 wide and 18 inches long. lays next to my lathe. it is long enough to give me the leverage I need and stiff enough you and bang it. The oak will give before the chuck and that is what I want. Cheaper to replace the board than the jaw. you need a hard board though. Just what I do, Nice video.

I've had good luck with a rubber strap wrench Cost me about $10 bucks. No chance of chipping/deforming expensive jaw teeth or lathe bed or anything else. Even use them on my metal lathe which gets way tighter than any wood lathe check gets. Kobalt 6-in Strap Wrench Item #2146963 Model #59016. Sorry to hear your Revo's spindle lock broke. I wonder why it stopped working and if mine will in the future.

Mike, I just keep an old Phillips screwdriver in my tool rack and it fills in that hole in the Nova chuck.

Stuck chucks are a very common problem. Best to avoid the problem by installing the chuck gently - if you spin in on, you increase the chance of it getting stuck.
I agree that plastic washers may help, but my experience is that the thickness of milk cartons is too irregular, and washers made from them are likely to introduce runout. Instead, I make my washers from the plastic boxes used for mailing TurboTax software.
I only have one chuck - a tommy-bar design - and the tommy bar itself makes a great lever for popping the chuck loose when it gets stuck.

I use a C-Spanner (i.e. - B01N0TFG03 on "the A store"). At $20 it isn't as cheap as using random stuff as levers but it grabs the head of the chuck rather than the jaws so won't damage anything, and is built for exactly this purpose. Before I got it I too was using random stuff as levers, including using the knockout bar between the jaws.
