Excellent video, many thanks. This is about my third time of watching, as I want to make a couple today, but putting needles and threads in them for emergency sewing kits. While I was watching I noticed how many little tips you threw in there, and for me as a new turner that’s absolutely brilliant.
Great little project Sam!!! Perfect for 'stocking stuffers' or a quick little gift for a friend, especially at this time of year!!! Again, THANKS sooo much for taking your time to share your expertise with us! Safe wood turning to you and yours ALWAYS!!!
I tried making two but I had a couple of catches that make me have to go back to the drawing board. Practice will make perfect. Carrying my iPad with me to shop to watch and turn as I follow your instructions. Maybe get it right today. I really like this project. Spence
Beautiful result of your project, Thanks for showing us this and all your videos. You are very skilled, experienced and a good teacher/instructor. I would just like to thank you personally as you inspire me to keep on tying to improve my turning and try to humbly copy some of your projects. Kind regards/George
George I appreciate your kind comments. I think it's important that we pass on to others what we have learned. No matter what our skill level, we can help and teach others. Sam
You should make one of those bean toys from back in the day. The one with the faces. I think they was called dancing beans or Mexican Jumping Beans I think they had a ball bearing in them or some thing that made stand up
I just made a video on a keychain version toothpick holder for a birthday gift for my Dad. He always has a toothpick in his mouth! I might have to make an additional one like yours too. Great video!
What chuck and jaws are you using in this video? I have the same lathe using the Delta branded Nova chuck and I'm not happy with the run-out that it has.
Wow good job!!!!! Also the burning marks !!!! Keep up the good work. I am a starter but now I have lots of ideas for birthday presents with a personal touch with thanks to you. Greetings from Tilburg The Netherlands.
Good morning, it’s always nice to hear from a far off place. Thank you very much for watching my video I hope you are well and be safe turning Sam in Montana, USA
Thanks for the video. Friendly feedback: Please consider a better microphone and more consistent audio levels. With your levels changing so dramatically throughout your video, I had to keep modulating the volume, in order hear what you were saying and protecting my ears from the frequent volume spikes. Cheers.
Sadly, I think I know more people who take pills than use toothpicks. I saw a guy on a date a few weeks ago with spinach in his teeth and the whole time the girl never let him know. This could've come in useful. Good project.
Hi Sam. Your Shellac in here is it just a normal blonde shellac flakes mix? I've used it a few times on pine but sort of in a french polishing way of rubbing it in, oil and toping up for about 10 coats. I know some use it as Shine Juice but always looking for different finishes.
That's interesting to use the oil over the top as people usually use the oil to penetrate the wood. I will have to check out your finish videos again listening better to take it all in.
What kind of finish did you give to the box i want something that gives the box a little protection and a beautiful shine that the wood nerves jump out if you know what I mean
First, I love your name. I wish I could hear how it is pronounced.....I looked back on the video and I just used some shellac. Thanks very much and be well. Sam
About 14 minutes in you mention using a twist drill bit since we can't see the bottom what is the advantage of a twist bit over a brad point bit? Or a fostner bit?
Along with other turners, I feel the twist drill is they best drill for drilling end grain. I do use forestner bits or brad point bits. But I find the forestner bits dull too easily. Sam
G'day Sam, have lots of red gum pen blanks and will just have to give it a go at making one for myself it just looks so neat, thanks for sharing your project, Tim.
Always looking for a tooth pick, and salt, I'll have to figure a way of incorporating a shaker on one end. A very novice turner but I might give this a try. Good job
Nice project. Do you have a video on how to make the reciprocal saw blade cut off tool? We all could use one of those . What is the name of the jaws are you using on the Nova chuck? Thanks.
I do not have a video on making the saw blade tool. Just grind it to the shape you want. The hard part, perhaps, is making a handle and attaching it. The jaws are small pin jaws. Sam
awesome i want to make one & a small round bow w a lid so this is a great example of how to. btw do u have a list of your top fav or top used turning tools? i dont think at our woodworking shop we have a point tool. can i use something different? i go to the Tetra Woodworking workshop if you want to check it out we just posted a slide show on youtube
+Marnbaby I have and use many tool. I have no list or no favorites. You can get the pint tool from Craft Supply USA Or you can make your own from round bar stock. Sam
I actually made a couple of these a few years ago. I don't think I will do a vid on making a cigar case. It is pretty much like the toothpick holder only larger. Plus I would have to buy a cigar to use as measurement for making it. I must stay clear of cigars: Cause I like to smoke 'em Sam
Terry, That shellac is from Blonde Shellac flakes. i also use the cans right off the shelf. I do classes in my shop and they are usually with one or two people. I would be happy to have you come by. You can look on my website-- wyomingwoodturner com for details and cost. Sam
great video! I wanted to ask if you possibly have one of these toothpick holders available for sale? id really like to add one to my everyday carry if possible.
+GradeCUnderC Well, the way sandpaper is "graded" in to coarse to fine grits is maybe backwards. A very coarse grit might be 60. That would be very coarse to start with. Then grits go up to 12,000. I have a set of very fine grits that go up that high. So working from a place where you can remove the visable scrates then proceed to a much finer grit will real make the surface look polished. Sam
Very nice Sam ! Tanks ! Nice regards from Slovenija .
Darko, I will have to add Slovenija to my list of pen pals....have a great day. Sam in wyoming
Neat little project Sam. Plenty of small pieces laying around to try this one.
I know. One should never want for a piece of wood or a little project to do. I can't live long enough to turn all my wood or turn all my ideas.
Sam
Hi Sam: Great video, I like the project, well demonstrated and explained, cheers Harry

Thanks for watching. I have my iPad in the shop for the same reason.
Sam
I finished one but I didn't realize I made it short so tooth picks didn't fit. It was a fair looking project. I will keep trying .
Very nice indeed. Thank you.
Excellent project Sam, as usual explained and demonstrated very well. Thank you.
Take care
Mike

Not sure if I ever saw one of those...
Thanks Sam
This is awesome. My next project. Thanks.
I just made a video on a keychain version toothpick holder for a birthday gift for my Dad. He always has a toothpick in his mouth! I might have to make an additional one like yours too. Great video!
If you make these as gifts, get Japanese Norpro toothpicks, they're made with a lot more detail. I get them from Amazon.
What chuck and jaws are you using in this video? I have the same lathe using the Delta branded Nova chuck and I'm not happy with the run-out that it has.
G'day Sam, that is a super impressive project, thank you for sharing it Tim.
Thanks for watching.

In Gillette Wyoming we call that a Joint holder!
Thanks for the video. Friendly feedback: Please consider a better microphone and more consistent audio levels. Red, thanks for the audio info. I agree. This video is 4 years old and I hope my video production has improved since then. Sam
Very nice Sam. Hahahahaha. How did you know I had a thousand pen blanks in my drawer??!!
Sadly, I think I know more people who take pills than use toothpicks.
I saw a guy on a date a few weeks ago with spinach in his teeth and the whole time the girl never let him know.
This could've come in useful. Good project.
More pills than toothpicks: you may be right. Old people don't have teeth but they take pills----wait, that's me.
thanks for watching, Sam

Yes it is blonde shellac. I often use an oil over the shellac as well.

Did you also turned all thoses toothpicks ?
:D

Thanks for watching

Always looking for a tooth pick, and salt, I'll have to figure a way of incorporating a shaker on one end. A very novice turner but I might give this a try. Good job
that sounds like a great invention. Sam
Nice project. Do you have a video on how to make the reciprocal saw blade cut off tool? We all could use one of those . What is the name of the jaws are you using on the Nova chuck? Thanks.

Sam - Great job as usual. One question, how big is the initial blank. I think I missed that bit.
It started out around 2 1/2 inches. It is ended up at 2" (I usually don't worry about measurements) Sam
who younger than 70 years carries that???
Great video, I have lots of pen blanks, so lots to practice on. Thankyou. Did you finish the inside with a wax or leave it natural?
+Maryke Dykhuizen
Yes I would certainly finish it with something. If it is a pill box, you might want to leave it bare wood.
Sam
Awesome idea :D it's am easy idea for some kids to make. Though I think that waste you parted off the lid would have made a nice little finial...
Yea, it was a nice little piece of wood. Trouble is....I already have a million set aside in boxes. Thanks for watching. Sam
Hey Sam. Would like to watch you make a cigar holder if possible.
Hi Sam, another great informative video. As a new turner it was easy to follow. After watching, I went out to my lathe and turned one.
Bob
Thanks for watching the video. I am glad it was helpful.
Sam
Great video. The shellac you mentioned, is it your own special formula? Do you do one on one teaching?
Terry,
That shellac is from Blonde Shellac flakes. i also use the cans right off the shelf.
I do classes in my shop and they are usually with one or two people. I would be happy to have you come by. You can look on my website-- wyomingwoodturner com for details and cost. Sam
Excellent job on showing how and the techniques required. Great project but it goes deeper than that.
Thanks
Thanks
Sam
great video! I wanted to ask if you possibly have one of these toothpick holders available for sale? id really like to add one to my everyday carry if possible.
Make one
Good job Sam. Looks beautiful.
Nice Sam
Very nice piece. I'll start to make one.
Hubert - Germany
Thanks
Sam
What size is the pen blank?
Pen blank?
WYOMINGWOODTURNER the pen blanks I have are 3/4 x 3/4, what you used looked bigger. Just asking
This might be a silly question but does a higher number sandpaper make a shinier and more defined finish
+GradeCUnderC

+WYOMINGWOODTURNER ok thanks.
great little project
I’m trying
Did you sand inside on that project?
Yes I did. I can't really remember just how much. Sam
Thanks for that I will put in in my to do file. By the way that wood is GOKID "God Only Knows I Don't"
We call it FOG wood. Found on the Ground
Sam
Oh that's what it is Allan - I've got loads of that ;)
Cheers
Mike
Great vid Sam. Love learning from you.
Thanks for the kind words
Sam
cool idea...i need a dozen of these.
It's a fun easy project
Sam
Damn man, you like to hear yourself talk.
