As great as Wenger was, and he truly was, I always thought the defence was an issue with Arsenal. It seemed to get worse when Keown left and Campbell left - never really felt like there was proper stable defensive unit until the current era under Arteta, where there are many solid players who can rotate and understand each other. In a way it's kind of an indictment of the final days of the Wenger era, just a lot of different personalities and no leadership in the team.
The problem with last Wenger seasons was not in Wenger and his training methods and tactical vision. It was just a poorly balanced squad with decent attacking options and just atrocious defending. Petr Cech was terrible. Kolasinac, Mustafi, Niles, Bellerin, Holding, Chambers would never be near current squad. I don’t remember who was in charge of selection in that period of time, but Jesus Lord Christ man must be a secret Spurs fan or something like that. It’s much easier to get good results when you’ve got Saliba/Gabriel as a pair of CB instead of Mustafi/Holding. Last year we didn’t won the league just because of Holding. And yep, do you remember first Arteta season and the squad we’ve got? Edu has done fantastic recovery job, Arteta is special, no doubt, but without good transfer and contract politics we would be in relegation battle. Wenger did his best with that set of players.

There's a difference between creating a platform for players to play their natural game and express their talent versus actually challenging them and stretching them to grow their game. By the end Arsene couldn't do the latter, and also couldn't consistently compete tactically.
