Really enjoyed your video, and I concur. Always looked down my nose at Vstroms - being a jack of all trades, cheap and soulless-a stepping stone if you like. That is until I rode one. By God-what a revelation. How could the mainstream mc media have missed it? Started with 650 a couple of years ago and purchased the 1000 a year ago. Love it to death. I've ridden everything from LC350s to Ducatis and I keep coming back to the big Strom. The handling is sublime, the torquey engine is amazing and, as you say, the brakes are very good. You won't get many people asking about your bike, and you may get some disparaging comments, but, that's the way I like it...best kept secret out there.
My experience was the same way. Was a skeptic about ADV bikes until recently attending a rather low-attendance Suzuki demo day, where I rode everything I could, back to back to back. The revelation the V-Stroms are in comfort, pep, rock solid agility and confidence, and being such a satisfying machine at everything was an eye-opener for me. They don't set your hair on fire for any aspect of function, but they do satisfy for every aspect. The question is, would a rider rather be satisfied with every function of a DL1000, or be rather disatisfied with a handful of functions on another kind of bike that sets their hair on fire in one or two ways? I think for long term, overall satisfaction is more valuable than a blend of dissatisfaction/annoyance with one hair-on-fire attribute thrown in.
Have you riden it off road on dirt tracks or sand ? I'm considering one of these but I really want it as an adventure bike and want to know how it holds up. Anyone know of a Paris/Dakar test of one of these ?
Gazza-usa you want the xt version if you want to take it off road, you will surprised just how light it feels and it is capable off road but you will need to add some extras skid plate for example oh and the ground clearance is a little low but apart from that off road is no problem.
+William Dent So sorry to hear you're now no longer able to ride but pleased if I'm able to help in some way - thanks for stopping by....all the best - TMF
I'd never considered the V Strom 1000 until my local dealer suggested I take one out for test ride. The bike provides a great riding position, it's comfortable and the bike feels really planted. I was never a fan of the big screens but what a difference it makes to motorway riding, completely protected making it easier to concentrate on the road ahead. The brakes are sharp and responsive and the V-Strom is still lots of fun around the a and b roads, and the 1000cc engine is really torquey. Anyway cut a long story short I bought one. You won't win many track days but the V-Strom is a great vfm bike that will perform well in any situation.
@@raywilliams9808 Dude you know he's happy. V Strom has a cult following. Everyone reps the 650 but for my money (if I'm going brand new) its the 1050 XT all day. The only thing it is missing that is useful is quick shifter. Thing is a beast. These older ones are great value for money going back to 2014, I have seen them in good condition as low as $5000 USD with some little mods on them. No one buys them because they're all fighting for used 650 XT @ $8000 USD. DUMB. Give me the big one.
Well, I've just gone and bought one, this colour with all the luggage. Trading in my gtr1400. Wanting something a bit /a lot lighter and enough power for a pillion. Already have an old 650, brilliant bike. Great review as usual, I think when you took the 4 cars at the start, you were confident with its grunt and handling, as I did when I rode one few years back, now new model out ... grab a bargain!
I currently ride the 2014 Vstrom 1000 and your review of the bike is spot on! The 20 liter tank will allow an easy 350 kms between stops and the comfort level is very good on long tours. I replaced the standard exhaust with a Yoshimura slip on, and the sound is perfect. Great review as always. Stay safe mate.
USA here. I have the 2018 exact bike bought new in 2021 for a first ever motorcycle at 62. Love it! No idea why I waited so long. I settled on the vstrom 1000 based largely on your review and a few others for seasoning. Thanks for great reviews.
As someone who owns a 2014 vstrom 1000 the speedometer is off a easy 5 mph most of the time. Just passed 10k miles and I have few issues with mine. Love the motor but wish it was not as abrupt with the throttle especially at low rpms. The worst thing is the windscreen which may make me sell mine. I’m very tall person and even after putting almost $300 more into brackets and new screen it still stinks. The buffeting just kills me. Love the rest of the bike. Thanks for the video.
I have the 2014 Vstrom 1000ABS thta I bought new in a box in July 2017. I have 25,000km on it now. It is an amazing machine. It does everything really well. I'm 6ft 1' and have a long torso and had buffeting issues with the stock windscreen. I put on the GIVI Airflow and its nothing but smooth air at any speed. I would highly recommend one. I paid $10,500 for this bike new with a 5 year warranty. It is one of the best bang for the buck bikes out there. This summer i'm going to put electronic cruise control (MCcruise out of Australia) on it and it will be perfect. Good luck with your bike
another great review Mr Flyer, I did consider the1000 but went for the 650 as it feels more nimble around the devon roads and bimbling around dartmoor, plus I saved myself nearly 3 grand!, . both great bikes tho and as you say fantastic value for money,
I test rode a CRF1000 then a Vstrom 1000 and within 2 mins of being on the strom I knew I was going buy it over the Honda, and I had my mind set on the honda for months beforehand. It is a comfy bike, my other bike being a K2 gixxer 1000 which I take when I need a power fix. The Vstrom to me seems to be happiest cruising at 130kph which only feels like 100, and the low down torque is amazing, no tickets yet though. Arrow slip-on without silencer is superb too. Nice vid. thanks
Super awesome review of the 1,000cc V-Strom. I absolutely love my V-Strom 650 as a everyday commuter. You simply can't go wrong with it, being a everyday motorcycle, especially with the pannier system on it. I got my 650 going 80mph at 6,000 rpm in 6th gear the other day. I wouldn't do that everyday on that little 650, but at least it's capable of it. Keep the videos coming, love your content man!!
You're correct, sir: it is a great time to be a motorcyclist - now even 4 years after your thorough review of this V-Strom. So many bikes to choose from, and this machine is still a good option. Thanks for a nice review!
Great review as always, I'm picking mine up on Saturday, I went for the yellow best colour in my opinion. Also got £750 worth of accessories free. ATB Rob
I guess they have this "not-outstanding" character, an unassumingness. Because even you said "best brakes I've ever ridden with" and then "not outstanding at any one thing" inside a minute 😄 Like one of those brilliant people who are awesome at what they do but then write it off saying "Oh that was nothing, all in a day's work you know, one does one's best yeah"
Thanks, mate, for a great review. I basically bought one on your advice and I really love it. As you say it has everything. I bought mine second hand and it came with full luggage so bonus! I live in South Australia and there are heaps of dirt roads here, so the Vstrom makes perfect sense, a great combination of road and not quite off road. thanks again for the great review, keep 'em coming
I was looking at a R1200GS until I took one for a ride, it didn't suit me especially the price. I checked out the Vstrom 1000 and purchased one 2 days later. They do everything you need in the real world at the most affordable price. I have never had a bad Suzuki.
I rode that bike on a demo ride they were having at a motorcycle race and I really liked it ! I have a 2015 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT that I like as well !
Love the review mate. I bought an '09' model 650 v-strom about six months ago and I love it. It deals wonderfully with the rough Australian back roads. My previous bike was a '05' suzuki gsx1400. I have changed exhaust and air filter plus a few other goodies to toughen it up a bit. It's just a great comfortable all rounder for my mostly road riding. I will definately be going for a late model 1000 next. The xt version looks like a good option With the tubeless spoked wheels. Thanx for the great work. Keep it up. Cheers from down under🌞👍
Thanks for the review! I know you're inundated with requests but I'd love to see a VFR1200F review. You'll need a spreadsheet to keep track of all these requests soon!
We had the classic VFR 800 pre vtec and girlfriend found it very comfortable, the 1200 is a similar set up in peg height and she felt comfortable on it. Depends on height etc.More a sports tourer than Tourer in this age of sit up arm chair bikes, its a slightly more leaned forward but not aggresive. The 170 bhp is linear and smooth, will get you out of a sticky situation. The exaust bark note is great when the vtec kicks in at 5000rpm. The DCT version is meant to be quite a good experience also! I would have bought it but it was purely down to price as basic bike without luggage and extras was more expensive than the fully loaded FJR1300 we opted for at the time.Do still look back and wonder if i made right choice though, FJR great but the VFR sportier, best thing to do is give one a spin. TMF might review also. ;)
Love your reviews, thanks for your efforts. I enjoy the English vistas but I wouldn't swap. I live in the snowy mountains in land of Oz. I can't help but think my tdm900 was ahead of its time. I get up to 3l/100km from mine! I do like both versions of the Suzuki though. Stay safe Mr flyer 😀
Thanks for the video. I had the 2013 650 version for 5 years from new. Last year i made the stupid mistake of trading it in for a new 2017 model Yamaha Tmax 530 DX so called sports scooter. I had only one reason to trade in the almost flawless 'Strom' - I get hand and wrist pain in my left hand when riding a manual transmission bike. Hearing you say that this has a hydraulic clutch and that that's easier on your hand made me want to spit.... and cry. I spent 1,350,000 Yen (ten thou quid) buying the Tmax, which is about 200,000 Yen more than your Strom. I have spent the last 7 months - almost from the very moment I rode the Tmax away from the dealer with zero kilometres on it - wishing I had not changed the 650 Strom at all and telling myself that it's OK that I will lose money again when putting this Tmax on Yahoo Auctions for as much as I can get. I did 5000 kilometres a year on the Strom, and 7 months after buying this current thing, it has less than 700 on it. Lesson? If you have a Strom, don't allow yourself to swap it for a noisy and fuel inefficient Tmax, no matter how much the Tmax's good points (and there are plenty) tempt you. In the end, you will wish you had either tolerated the hand and wrist pain or swapped the 650 for something with a 'servo assisted' (?) clutch lever. Thanks for the good videos.
Hi, great review as usual, thx! Owning the 2017 V-Strom 650 I had a testdrive with the 1000 recently. Being enthusiastic about the chassis, in particular the suspension I finally felt unexpectedly disappointed by the engine! Appreciating the additional power and torque I ended up missing the cultivated and decent way the 650 delivers her's. At least with the individual I drove it felt as if the gear ratio of the 2nd and 3rd gear at least are to long. This means that you might end up at a hairpin in the alpes forced to get down to the first gear because the 2nd won't run round below 3000rpm which would mean almost 50 km/h which usually won't be the velocity you'll be with at the summit of a hairpin. The clutch behaving reluctantly and Hard didn't make things better. I didn't expect this disappointment. Considering to augment the 650 suspension by a Wilbers.
My 2019 VStrom 1000 is perfect. I live in the mountains and ride enthusiastically. Perhaps you are more used to the 650 so felt more comfortable with it. The 650 and the 1,000 do very well in the corners.
@@harolddavis4138 thx for your comment. I am happy to hear that it must have been issues with the particular bike the dealer provided, because I always considered the 1000 to be the Happy End of riding the 650.
Totally in the same situation with 650 2013...I much prefer the looks of the MK2...the MK2 is like a beautiful lady and the MK3 like a rough diamond :)
Well I finally decided to go for one of these and picked mine up a few days ago. A returning biker after a 35 year absence your review was the deciding factor for me (I didn’t even have time for a test ride), got to say I’m not disappointed what a machine I love it! Maybe I’ll see you out and about or even overhead stay safe👍
TheMissendenFlyer I should let you know that I also purchased a dash protector from speedo angels, when the question “how did you hear about us” came up I chose the TMF option (which is actually the case) 👍
I agree, very underrated motorcycle. Sometimes it makes me wonder why i paid more than a third more for my current motorbike! The suzuki panniers are a bit rubbish but i suppose six grand of loose change would sort that.
I had my search narrowed down to 3 bikes. Multistrada, GS, or the 1000XT. Test rode all 3... The Duc was FAST, GS was very nice, V-Strom honestly felt like the GS but was more comfortable for me. I was going to choose the GS but brought the Suzuki home as the money I saved paid for crash bars, GIVI aluminum panniers, new riding gear and lots of fuel. But for god sakes Suzuki put a center stand on them!
I used to have bikes when i was 12 -18 years old, i loved suzuki ever since my first. The first ever bike i road was an old yamaha yz80 awsesome bike but then i got suzuki TS50 and a very old late 70s TS50 aswell. I had suzuki ever since. When i passed my driving test suzuki my first car and had them ever since but now i think im gunna get a bike for weekend country lane fun and this bike as just stole my heart. Its either this or gsxr 1000 as i loved the gear change pull on those.
"One of my reviews wouldn't be complete without a white van in front of me so we'll just sit in here for a second". That had me chuckling for a bit. :)
I did a demo ride a few months back and like you, I was pleasantly surprised by the bike. Most mags seemed to put it down comparing it to a GS1200. Comfortable, powerful, great brakes and reasonably priced. I think it's a great bike.
I own a 2017 vee and I love it. Can lug 2 up with some weighty luggage without a flinch and Its surprisingly quick too mid range 30- to illegal speeds with an easy twist. can tail my brothers zx9r on spirited overtakes with ease. I've added an inflatable bubble seat pads as I suffer with numb arse after an hour or so and it works a charm managed a 600 mile trip completly comfortable without too much fatigue 300 miles of that in p****** down rain too I'm totally confident in wet weather on this bike just a sore jaw through clenching which I always do when riding for some stupid reason. Rev assist and feather clutch is a god send in crawling heavy traffic also. Can pretty much ride round town rev and go sticking to 3rd though it can be a bit Twitchy/lumpy on slow corners if you're lazy with shifting that's vtwin torque for you. Sublime bike for the money.
i think this v-strom 1000 and a yamaha r6 will keep a man happy for the rest of his life....oh and may be a crf 450 too i guess...:P excellent video as usual...like u said...an unsung hero...pretty surprised why the journos didnt praise it...
Really excellent value, difficult to find fault and there is no way a GS would pull away in fifth, at least not without torturing the clutch! I wonder if at some point they'll offer cruise control, would be a welcome addittion ! Re the video I think you've established an excellent testing format, my go to channel if I want an honest bike review where the bike is the star and not the tester. You seem to have increased the humour/sarcasm content which is very welcome too, lol. Overall great bike and excellent channel. Cheers tony
TMF, Thank's for another awesome review! I am looking at some leftover models of the DL1000 and the FJ 09. Both are priced around $8300.00, here in the U.S. Which of these two would make a better and more comfortable all arounder? I've been riding for most of my 55 years. Currently on a Versey 650 and spent the previous 15 years on a ZRX1200. The 650 is great, but I need a more torquey and powerful engine. Keep up the good work! Rich
+elitetileandstone tricky one - the FJ09 has a more modern/sporty feel about it, the Suzuki feels like a more serious bike - if you tour a lot then the Suzuki I would say (on comfort grounds), if not then the FJ09....both are great though, you won't be disappointed with either.
i agree with u on this bike. it is an underrated bike. i am in the market for a big allroad and the africa twin was on top of my list until i recently got to ride this 1000 vstrom. in all fairness i like the looks of the at better but this is just better value for money whilst road handling is similar (if not better) u can buy the 2016 strom here for around 9k pound (over year/ new) and the same goes for the 2017 model in januari. i think i wait till this winter/early spring and pick up a left over 2017 model. if u look for a no nonsense do it all bike these are hard to beat specially with this pricetag/cheap oem optional bits and 3 year warranty....
Great review. May well be getting a 2017 one of these in a month or so, still trying to decide if I will enjoy Versys 1000 more. Test ride only way to be sure I guess...
@@raywilliams9808 No not at all, the gs was really god but I wanted to try something else :-). One thing I miss is the drive chaft at the gs. And yes, I am still happy with v strom. I don't think you will regret if you buy one :-). Wish you good luck!!
Looks like a very utilitarian machine, smart looking and for under. 10k, who could pass it by? Off to a motorcycle event tomorrow, weather looks not too bad. Thanks for the posting. Kindest regards. Joe.
I went with the 2017 650XT, and am absolutely loving the Vee/Wee 3 line. After 4k miles on it, I think your 650 review was spot on - it does pretty much everything acceptably. I admit that I didn't even consider the 1000, but may upgrade to one in a couple years when it comes time to retire my 650. Having ridden both, besides the step up in engine displacement, did you find them comparable as a rider?
The main difference for me was the suspension and brakes on the DL1000. They are VERY good straight from the showroom. Suspension has that fine blend of firm-but-supple damping quality about it, and offers really good road surface feedback to the rider without ever being fatiguing. The brakes are a strong, strong upgrade as well, with the security of IMU and cornering ABS added in. Besides those functions, obviously the big torque offered for effortless grunt getting going and cruising at higher speeds. Both the 645 and 1037 engines will last forever and are reliable as a stone. DL1000 has chain/gear hybrid system which makes cam maintenance an absolute whizz. Also has a unique mechanical zing sounds that the 650 doesn't.
I just purchased a VStrom 1002 weeks ago 2018 model. Are usually write a more off-road style bike with 21 inch wheel, however I find this bike incredibly nice to drive, safe in the knowledge That it is reliable and will still go down some green lanes if I want it to. Was considering the Africa Twin but got put off its because of its weight and tubed tires, And also I just hate to many electronics that could go wrong.
Great video! Thanks! The front suspension is adjustable too in 2 different points up on the top for harness and on the bottom of the forks for dumping. You mentioned only for the rear suspension adjustment.
I have the same problem with the speedo over-reading 😉. Great test...thanks. Suzuki don't get the press they deserve probably because the bikes are more functional than the competition, but I've always thought that the Suzuki V twin is probably the best engine for everyday use on our roads. Lovely power delivery. If I was in the market for a big adventure bike then this would be high on my list. Great color too! Cheers for now!
Good spot noticing the speedo reads higher than your actual speed. I've got mine set to km,s and it reads between 3 - 12 km more than you actual speed. The variation increases the faster you go. Overall i like my VStrom and for the price its hard to beat. I,m only 5ft 7in and can handle her OK so anyone considering one of these don,t let the height put you off if your vertically challenged. I did take it off road and the height really becomes apparent here and I did not feel comfortable on some of the rougher trails. Good review of a decent bike. Look forward to the next one.
I'm looking to do my test in Oct, so was searching for a first bike review. came across yours that was more in depth compared to others, ended up watching alot of vids haha.
Agree with cheap thing...I have the DL650 2013 and the one thing you notice after owning for a while is the poor fit of some of the plastic bits up the front around the tank...lovely bike though
Great review which I have watched multiple times. It was mentioned a few times in the vid that it's unlikely anyone would take one offroad. Just want to say that if that's in the plan, don't hesitate. I have a 2016 with Shinko E804 and E804 combo and it works really well offroad. Amazed at what it can climb with the TC off. Just have to be mindful of the low ground clearance. A great Swiss Army knife of a bike.
@@TheMissendenFlyer My pleasure and again, love your reviews. The Norway trip is amazing. The comparisons of those bridges to the ones here in Canada is bang on. So many of those scenes could have been Western Canada or the more rugged parts of our East coast. Cheers and thanks for entertaining us.
My second bike was the "original" all-rounder, the granddad of the small Vstrom: Suzuki Freewind. I kind of miss it :) I think the big new Vstrom might be my next bike if I ever decide to sell my Yamaha TDM. Once again, nice vid. Subbed!
I have one of these v stroms and I love it, only complaint I have is the engine is showing its age and lacks refinement and a bit of power next to its rivals. The best compliment its ever received is I gave my friend a shot of it. He's a die hard yamaha man who hates suzukis, calls them all cheap shit budget bikes, and he absolutely loved it. Was full of praise for the big strom.
Never really paid any attention to this bike but noticed an Xt model today at my local Suzuki dealer and I really like them as they seem good value and a nice bike plus didn't feel overly heavy when I sat on it ... maybe in the future when I get too creaky for my sports bikes I'll buy one or something similar ... top review
A little correction on statement Mr. Flyer. The V-Strom 1000 has looked like this since back in 2014. The 650 was the bike updated in 2017 to look like the 1000. You had it the other way around.
Great review as always. My other bike is a 2008 V-Strom 1000 and I love that too. The original screen on that though was the first thing I changed when I got it. The buffeting at 60-70 mph made it impossible to ride for more than 45 minutes at a time. It gave me blurred vision. Stuck an MRA screen on it and it's perfect now. I am 6 foot 2 though so the screen on the new one may be as bad I guess.
excellent review, i think i'll be looking to buy one of these when my A2 days are done. i have a gladius at the moment and love the v twin growl, if only they still made the sv1000 i'd buy one. i know all about those traffic lights, i go through them every week going through to St. Albans haha.
Well I just bought one of these bikes on the back of yet again a great review. I had to buy the lowest seat for it and it's a fantastic ride. Keep safe 2 wheelers
I had a go on a 2017 Vstrom 1000 at a ‘ Suzuki test day ‘ at my local bikers cafe. I was very very impressed. Stonking engine , precise well damped handling and decent brakes. But has it got BMW build quality ? I ride the ubiquitous R1200GS..........
I owned v-strom and replaced it with 1200gs. GS doesnt worth that money. A lot of details looks much cheaper than on v-strom (handlebars controls and some other plastik). Maintenance is way cheaper on v-strom. Agricultural gearbox on GS is a thing you never get used to,... I am thinking about replacing gs with v-strom. One thing to admit - GS drives a bit better offroad and in slow traffic due to lower gravity centre... Price/performance goes to v-strom by far!!!
Great review as ever, have to say reference the mirrors one of the few bike reviews where I reckon as a viewer ,can see as much as you can behind you so they must be good!
I found it to be very comfy, even more so than a Versys. Not sure I want to go back to chain drive yet but it is tempting for the added comfort and ease over my FJR. Cost certainly increases dramatically on the extras config but then that's pretty universal these days. I'm still preferring the XT model but weary of the spoke/rim cleaning and maintenance and also the longevity of the gold anodizing. I think I'll wait and see how that pans out too. Having said that the 650 or 1000 are still top of my wanty needy list :)
Another great review as always M.F. You can't go wrong with a V-Strom - a few weeks ago Millenium were knocking these out pre-reg for £7999 - or £650 deposit and £99 a month on PCP! I mean come on, how good is that (in this current financial climate)?

USA here. I have the 2018 exact bike bought new in 2021 for a first ever motorcycle at 62. Love it! No idea why I waited so long. I settled on the vstrom 1000 based largely on your review and a few others for seasoning. Thanks for great reviews.
one of the better reviewers on YT.
+johnny mars Thank you Johnny...appreciate the kind comment - TMF
THE best possibly .
I sold my V-strom and bought a Sv650n instead. Got rid of the buffeting.
Good luck with your bike
another great review Mr Flyer, I did consider the1000 but went for the 650 as it feels more nimble around the devon roads and bimbling around dartmoor, plus I saved myself nearly 3 grand!, . both great bikes tho and as you say fantastic value for money,
+Andrew Turner Cheers Andy!
Well, i believe you just made up my mind for me. I think im going with the XT. Thanks!

80mph @ 6000rpm its just getting into its stride for 650 cc ,Capable of triple digits without to much fuss .
+JJSouthernAZ Thank you sir - will do!
You only went 80 mph? That's all? haha
JJSouthernAZ i had a damn cr80 as a kid that damn near did 80 it should go a bit faster mate.
Was 2 up full luggage 80-100 no issues , pull the throttle a bit more !!!
Finally! I've already ordered mine in black. Pick it up on Friday 😁👌🏻👍🏻
+Cloggsy Goodwin Congratulations and enjoy!
You're correct, sir: it is a great time to be a motorcyclist - now even 4 years after your thorough review of this V-Strom. So many bikes to choose from, and this machine is still a good option. Thanks for a nice review!
My pleasure Kent - thanks for watching
Great review as always, I'm picking mine up on Saturday, I went for the yellow best colour in my opinion. Also got £750 worth of accessories free. ATB Rob
Sounds like a good deal - enjoy your new bike, all the best - TMF
robert keepence are you happy with it? Thinking about getting one myself
I guess they have this "not-outstanding" character, an unassumingness. Because even you said "best brakes I've ever ridden with" and then "not outstanding at any one thing" inside a minute 😄
Like one of those brilliant people who are awesome at what they do but then write it off saying "Oh that was nothing, all in a day's work you know, one does one's best yeah"
Glad you like the bike Steve, and will do!
@@TheMissendenFlyer You've seen uglier morrors ? Come on 😏.
Funny this bike wasn't even on my radar till your review, well done.
Glad to be of service!
I was looking at a R1200GS until I took one for a ride, it didn't suit me especially the price. I checked out the Vstrom 1000 and purchased one 2 days later. They do everything you need in the real world at the most affordable price. I have never had a bad Suzuki.
Same ......
@@iceman7669ify agree
A very good bike and value. It does need cruise control as the V Stroms are used commonly for touring. Nice review as usual!
+T Sav I thought it had it, if it doesn't then you're right! Thanks for watching as ever, always good to hear from you - TMF
Defo no cruise control...shame
When Suzuki converts the 650 and 1000 over to throttle-by-wire, then cruise can be added.
I bought one the limited addition Desert version and absolutely love it and hopefully will be going touring on it soon
I rode that bike on a demo ride they were having at a motorcycle race and I really liked it ! I have a 2015 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT that I like as well !
Thomas Evers which would you prefer for single in town riding and which for 2up hwy cruising? thanks
How do u rate the Versys to the v strom ?
Love the review mate.
I bought an '09' model 650 v-strom about six months ago and I love it. It deals wonderfully with the rough Australian back roads. My previous bike was a '05' suzuki gsx1400.
I have changed exhaust and air filter plus a few other goodies to toughen it up a bit. It's just a great comfortable all rounder for my mostly road riding.
I will definately be going for a late model 1000 next. The xt version looks like a good option
With the tubeless spoked wheels.
Thanx for the great work. Keep it up.
Cheers from down under🌞👍
another great review !! you certainly have a way of keeping ones attention ! Top Marks - I am now buying one !
Thanks for the review! I know you're inundated with requests but I'd love to see a VFR1200F review. You'll need a spreadsheet to keep track of all these requests soon!
+Emlyn Washbrook What makes you think I don't have a spreadsheet already?!
Good man - I should never have doubted you!
Just Buy one a really underatted old school type tourer but bang up to date, with bags of smooth V4 power and precise steering, You will love it!! lol
Thanks Joseph - any idea what the pillion comfort is like?
+Ian Raymond Cheers Ian!
Just sold my zx14r to buy this exact model can't wait to pick it up tomorrow only 2600 klms on the clock. Great review 👍
Congratulations Andrew - enjoy your new bike!

Thanks for the feedback....all the best - TMF
Absolutely nothing wrong with the gearing IMHO. Perfect to my taste, and I like canyon carving.
I am happy to hear that it must have been issues with the particular bike the dealer provided, because I always considered the 1000 to be the Happy End of riding the 650.
was on a rental 650, and it was at day 3 that i realize i haven't adjust the mirror since the start, the mirror is just that good
I bought a vStrom 650xt 2016. Did a 13,000 mile trip on it. Loved it. Not sure if i like the 2017 looks thought.
+Krypt1 T Nice one....
Totally in the same situation with 650 2013...I much prefer the looks of the MK2...the MK2 is like a beautiful lady and the MK3 like a rough diamond :)
Nice review.
The front for me is too beak like. Sounds nice though.
I ride the striple 675 but would love to upgrade to the tiger
Thank you....
I think your camera is broke as it keeps blurring out your speedo!! Cracking review.
Great review, Im glad I bought the 650 after watching your review, It's a great bike.
+02bigkev Excellent, glad you're enjoying it...
Congratulations Andrew!
TheMissendenFlyer I should let you know that I also purchased a dash protector from speedo angels, when the question “how did you hear about us” came up I chose the TMF option (which is actually the case) 👍
Great review. Liked the 650cc, like the 1000c even more. Both are on my short list for next bike. Guess I'm going to have to try both of them.
I want one of these! Very reasonably priced motorbike. Looks good too.... Great review :)
Thank you Michael.....
I agree, very underrated motorcycle. Sometimes it makes me wonder why i paid more than a third more for my current motorbike! The suzuki panniers are a bit rubbish but i suppose six grand of loose change would sort that.
+johnston Stewart Exactly!
Hi TMF. My previous bike was the V-Strom 650, 2006 model. Miss that bike everyday! Cool review.
+Marinus du Preez ...bummer!
Thanks for the review. Currently looking at these bikes. Take care.
I *so* enjoy these first impressions reviews by TMF. Informative, knowledgeable and good humor to boot.
+Scott Peterson Thank you Scott - very kind of you...
wow, it's got a proper front mudguard. No need to buy an extension!
+Joseph E Hurrah!
P. S. The muffler would have to go.
+gwynn romano 100% agree...
Reminds me of my old DR Big 800 single. Some styling cues remain :) Nice!
Lot of people forget that that was the original bike with the beak. The current one hence, pays homage to a Suzuki classic, doesn't copy the beemer!
i think this v-strom 1000 and a yamaha r6 will keep a man happy for the rest of his life....oh and may be a crf 450 too i guess...:P
excellent video as usual...like u said...an unsung hero...pretty surprised why the journos didnt praise it...
Thankyou for having continuity in your reviews , I am test riding this bike this weekend and hopefully off touring in France / Spain in July
Enjoy!
Cheers
tony
AoToGo Cruise control would be a huge bonus on the V-Strom 1000!
+AoToGo Thank you very much Tony....
The gearing must be very close why can't a gs pull away in 5th
My GS could😜
I'm pretty sure mine does too....
Rich
+elitetileandstone tricky one - the FJ09 has a more modern/sporty feel about it, the Suzuki feels like a more serious bike - if you tour a lot then the Suzuki I would say (on comfort grounds), if not then the FJ09....both are great though, you won't be disappointed with either.
i agree with u on this bike. it is an underrated bike. i am in the market for a big allroad and the africa twin was on top of my list until i recently got to ride this 1000 vstrom.
in all fairness i like the looks of the at better but this is just better value for money whilst road handling is similar (if not better)
u can buy the 2016 strom here for around 9k pound (over year/ new) and the same goes for the 2017 model in januari.
i think i wait till this winter/early spring and pick up a left over 2017 model.
if u look for a no nonsense do it all bike these are hard to beat specially with this pricetag/cheap oem optional bits and 3 year warranty....
Really enjoyed this review your so professional in detail many thanks Tony
+Anthony Stanley Thank you!
I tried an 18 1000, and was very impressed! Very similar to my honda AT, which is more offroad capable so keeping it.
Great review. May well be getting a 2017 one of these in a month or so, still trying to decide if I will enjoy Versys 1000 more. Test ride only way to be sure I guess...
Thank you for the review, I will buy mine tomorrow:-).
It is 2018 DL1000XT, sold my GS after 4 years and will try this one now.
Was the gs giving you trouble ? About to pull the trigger on a 2021 1050xt with full pannier set ,still happy with your v storm?
@@raywilliams9808 No not at all, the gs was really god but I wanted to try something else :-). One thing I miss is the drive chaft at the gs.
And yes, I am still happy with v strom. I don't think you will regret if you buy one :-). Wish you good luck!!
Looks like a very utilitarian machine, smart looking and for under. 10k, who could pass it by? Off to a motorcycle event tomorrow, weather looks not too bad. Thanks for the posting. Kindest regards. Joe.

Love your video reviews. I have a 2012 650 Vstrom and I think you've sold me on the 1000.
You won’t go wrong with the bigger bike - enjoy!
I've just bought a 2019 with all the extras 👍🏼
Congratulations!
@@TheMissendenFlyer cheers can't wait to see what it's like from a zzr14 🤣
I went with the 2017 650XT, and am absolutely loving the Vee/Wee 3 line. After 4k miles on it, I think your 650 review was spot on - it does pretty much everything acceptably. I admit that I didn't even consider the 1000, but may upgrade to one in a couple years when it comes time to retire my 650. Having ridden both, besides the step up in engine displacement, did you find them comparable as a rider?
+Kerri Miller Yes very much so...
After nearly 10 years on my 650 I got the 1000 now. Absolutely love it.. also hada tiger sport 1050 but I prefer vstrom 1000 all the way.
Great video! Thanks! The front suspension is adjustable too in 2 different points up on the top for harness and on the bottom of the forks for dumping. You mentioned only for the rear suspension adjustment.
Thanks for the clarification
Great bike’s and I love the fact they’re underrated by the badge snobs 😉
They are excellent machines - no nonsense just get on with it.....
Cheers Steve - always good to have you along and I agree on the big V-Twin, nice unit......all the best - TMF
+Millie Stafford Thank you Millie...
All speedos read about 10% over...probably to sneakily reduce your speed (big brother)...I have never had a speedo that reads correctly in over 40 yrs
love your reviews mate,iv watched alot of your vids over the last 2 days. keep up the work
+bad player At a loose end by chance? ;0)
I'm looking to do my test in Oct, so was searching for a first bike review. came across yours that was more in depth compared to others, ended up watching alot of vids haha.
Good man - don't forget that "subscribe" button!
Do like the silver/black/yellow colour, but the first thing I noticed was no center stand good mirrors but it does look cheap in places
+vince halls Cheers Vince - good to hear from you as ever....
Agree with cheap thing...I have the DL650 2013 and the one thing you notice after owning for a while is the poor fit of some of the plastic bits up the front around the tank...lovely bike though
Concur with all your observations though find the height unusual even compared to quote TMF the mahoosive K 1600 BMW. Great vid as always.
Would definitely consider one of these when I eventually PX the Multistrada
+Womanwolfrider Fair enough....
Top of the big bike wish list not sure how I would cope with the fuel consumption going from a 125 but I imagine I'd cope ok!
+sirico I think you'd quickly forget about it ;0)
If you got an f800gs you would probably get better mpg than the 125
I'm wanting one of these bikes . Safe riding .
A good all round bike, I also think it looks really good in that yellow.
+Bonnie-Voyage100 I agree...
I din't liked that design of headlights... Otherwise it is a nice bike... Love your review... As Always...
+Muhammad Usman Thanks :0)
I agree about the headlights...look very ugly to me..like the MK1 650 Versys...my 2013 650 is much prettier IMO :)
Nice one and thanks for the off-road feedback!

+Z17xMachine Thank you
Great review as always ! was looking at one at the weekend, good to hear your views on it.
+Peter Harrison Thanks Peter....
I've just put a deposit down on one of these 2017 models based on your video so hopefully it will be decent.
love your videos, i always wait until you mention "GS", ,,,normally under 3 mins lmfao
My second bike was the "original" all-rounder, the granddad of the small Vstrom: Suzuki Freewind. I kind of miss it :) I think the big new Vstrom might be my next bike if I ever decide to sell my Yamaha TDM.
Once again, nice vid. Subbed!
Welcome along!
Excellent Iron Horse...
Unselfish MC design...easy DIY
Excellent MC bloggers👍👍
Never really paid any attention to this bike but noticed an Xt model today at my local Suzuki dealer and I really like them as they seem good value and a nice bike plus didn't feel overly heavy when I sat on it ... maybe in the future when I get too creaky for my sports bikes I'll buy one or something similar ... top review
Thank you Mark....
I think this bike is overlooked by the market. Excellent price/performance ratio. Offers all that much more expensive bikes offer...
A little correction on statement Mr. Flyer. The V-Strom 1000 has looked like this since back in 2014. The 650 was the bike updated in 2017 to look like the 1000. You had it the other way around.
+CBRboy1717 Oops - thanks for the clarification....
nice bike, hard choice for those in the market for an all rounder between this and the tracer.
+Loganx5 Indeed - a tough call! The Suzuki feels more substantial but the Yamaha is more nimble - guess it depends what you value most...
+Ibby Tuono An MRA is usually the way to go - I'm a big fan....
excellent review, i think i'll be looking to buy one of these when my A2 days are done. i have a gladius at the moment and love the v twin growl, if only they still made the sv1000 i'd buy one.
i know all about those traffic lights, i go through them every week going through to St. Albans haha.
Well I just bought one of these bikes on the back of yet again a great review. I had to buy the lowest seat for it and it's a fantastic ride. Keep safe 2 wheelers
Just put the higher seat on mine ☝️😂😂
Nice quick no BS first impression video.. kudos!
Thank you Fuzzy Was - I aim to please! Thanks for watching - TMF
Good morning TMF thank you for the review Take Care.
+Wayne Compton Morning...
Will do but about to sign up. They seem to be pretty good. Keep em coming!
Great value bike dude with a top review .....if the dealer is the largest in that area would they be the smallest in another 🤔😊
+lomate Lomate Not necessarily - think your logic may be a bit awry with that one!
Always of interest TMF.
Nice looking bike, and a good honest review as always.
+dadwold Thanks...
Great review as ever, have to say reference the mirrors one of the few bike reviews where I reckon as a viewer ,can see as much as you can behind you so they must be good!
+clive evans Cheers Clive....
+Hepcat Harley They are both seriously good machines, you wouldn't go wrong with either...
Another great review as always M.F. You can't go wrong with a V-Strom - a few weeks ago Millenium were knocking these out pre-reg for £7999 - or £650 deposit and £99 a month on PCP! I mean come on, how good is that (in this current financial climate)?
+Big T Yes that is indeed a bargain....
