Regret selling my '12 650 a couple of years ago but looking forward to getting a replacement. I'm 71 and have been riding for many decades and the V-Strom in my opinion is the most versatile bike I've ever owned.
The V-Strom 650 has no right being as good as it is. Ridiculously good all rounder. Turbine smooth, refined v-twin, handles well, good screen, good on motorways, quick enough to blat off cars on twisties, love the instruments, comes with a useful power socket in the control binnacle and it even has a practical, solid rear rack. Maybe the one bike that could do it all.
What about when you put a pillion onto it? Still? I am looking for a bike which I could take onto easy off-road parts of the world (alone) while also be able to tour comfortably with a pillion around Italian and Swiss Alps while also getting good mileage for commuting. Is that even possible? I currently own a Yamaha TDM900 and it's perfect for pretty much everything except off-road. On paper, the V-strom looks really similar but I think its off-road capabilities are superior.
@@RonaiHenrik for your purpose I would said Vstrom 1000 if you like to go fast in twisties with your pillon, if you like riding cool I would say the vstrom 650 no doubt
Forgive me Mr Missended Flyer (as i know you like the Triumph) I have just traded in my Triumph Street Triple R 675 for one of these fine motorcycles. 20 years of plastering and Thrashing Heavy Metal on a Guitar has left my wrists a little worst for wear! Although the Triumph was not a really sporty bike i still had a lot of weight on my wrists, but after test riding the V-Strom 650 it was like riding a cloud (A cloud with massive mirrors where i could see pretty much everything happening behind me without tucking my elbows in) and as soon as i got back to the dealers i said sign me up! Also i'm surprised at how nimble the bike is and you can really throw it around if you want to. Great bike.
A truly great bike without all the TFT display none sense and without all the electronic doo-dahs to interfere. I don’t think the dash is old fashioned at all, it has everything that you need at a glance. Do we really want or need to spend time looking at a TFT screen to try and change the temperature of your heated grips or to make phone calls for God’s sake? Motorcycling is dangerous enough without all the computer monitor crap that manufacturers think we need! Thank goodness for Suzuki!
I owned an earlier version, but it had exactly he qualities TMF reports. Absolutely fault free in any weather in Oz, both freezing and over 40C no problem to start or run. Fantastic fuel economy, I got 500 kms with careful use of the throttle - brilliant long distance tourer! Of all the bikes I have owned this, the Suzuki 650 V-Strom is the best of all, inc. BMW, Moto Guzzi and other Japanese brands.
Great review! I have that exact bike, same year, same color, XT model. I've had other bikes, but this is my favorite so far, and probably my last - I just turned 72. In the hills of southwestern Colorado I have to ride miles in any direction to hit pavement and the Strom does very well (I plan to upgrade to either Mitas E07 tires or Dunlop Trailmax Missions. Everything here is hilly and twisty (I'm at 7550 ft. elevation / 2301 meters). County roads and highways are a piece of cake for this bike. (I have a dirt bike - Husaberg FE390 - for the rough stuff, but ride the Strom FAR more these days. I've ridden but never owned a true sport bike, but at 6'3' and a 34 inch inseam, I don't like the position of sport bikes. This 650 has more than enough torque to keep me happy at any speed. Thanks for a great review - I just subbed to you channel. - Ray, near Durango, CO, 7 inches of new snow and 5 degrees F this week.
I had an early version DL650 and what a great bike, I ragged it around Mallory Park embarrassing a few sports bikes and toured France two up overloaded. What spoilt it was the rear footrests are so spread apart my pillion with short legs sat with legs splayed and with the panniers fitted it was as wide as a small car. I replaced it with a BMW 650GS (800 twin) but preferred the Suzuki a much underrated bike.
@@TheMissendenFlyer these machines will do hundreds of thousands of miles if you keep them maintained. Let’s hear it for engines not tuned to the hilt.
danofzanzibar i agree whenever mcn do a back to back test...ìt's always the fastest that wins. for that reason,I hav'nt purchased it for approx 10 years
The rags almost never find anything to criticise. The only one that told it like it is was Motorcycle Sport and that died a couple of decades ago. The manufacturers wouldn't supply them with test bikes!
Terrific review! Love the impartial and very balanced perspective. Most reviewers just contrast-and-compare with other bikes. Love that you actually talk about THIS motorcycle with only casual mention of other variants. Nicely done!
another great review! I actually bought this bike a month ago after test riding both the 650 and 1000. I found that with my riding style, and where I like to ride here in Nova Scotia that I was using more of the motor on the 650. The 1000 was great, but I didn't need all the extra torque, and horsepower as I don't do a lot of motorway riding. Once again a great review...happy biking, and thanks for a great channel!
Thank you Kevin, I'm looking forward to trying the 1000 for comparison purposes to, and I agree, bigger isn't always better (Hence my Street Triple rather than a Speed and my 899 Panigale rather than a 1299)....
Over time I’ve owned three DL650’s, all bought new, then used well. Because of this I’ve come to meet many ‘Strom riders from all over the planet. If there’s a common theme in our conversations I’d say it’s this: If, time and money wise, you can only afford one bike, you can’t go wrong with the ‘Strom. However, if your fortunate enough to have a few bikes in the garage, the ‘Strom is the best bike to mix with the others.
The type of bike easily dismissed as nothing special and not one to impress other people, but a bike that'd make fun transport for commuting and touring and eventually learn to love. Another good review - and a vote of encouragement to try out the 1000 to see if it's the same but better, iykwim.
Another awesome review from one of my favorite British Motorcycle reviewers!! I absolutely love my Suzuki V Strom 650. Best bike to do everything with. Especially when you have the big panniers on it!
I'm just about to but my third 650 V-Strom. It is really great for one or two-up riding and that v-twin engine is tried and tested and seemingly bulletproof. It's just SO easy to ride. I put more miles on my V-Stroms than with any other bikes I've ever had.
Another great, balanced review. And kudos for not getting flustered or waving your arms around at the lady who pulled out right in front of you while using her phone at 2:20. Drivers do dangerous and stupid things, motorbikes are invisible. Getting upset doesn't fix that.
@@georgeblumenthal7938 I have a '15 Adv model, which is largely the same bike. TheMissendenFlyer review is spot on -- competent do-everything bike for very modest money. And yes, it can do 70-75 mph on the highway for as many hours as you like. The engine is not working especially hard at 70-80 in 6th. Surprising comfort. (I've had 5 BMWs in the course of my riding life, and the Wee-strom is no slouch.)
Test drove this a month ago, and now own the new red 650 XT! Absolutely loved it from the moment I hopped on, and so does the missus. Win-win all round I'd say? :)
Tested the new V-strom 800 Re the other day. Really liked it except for the wind buffering around the helmet. So I asked how much I had to pay when trading in my 2022 SV 650. It would dropped 45% in value over the three summers I been riding it. The SV is like new except tire wear. For less than the money in between I can by a 2017 V-strom 650 with panniers, 2000Km on the clock. I will go for the used 650, two bikes for the price of one. I don’t need all the tech on the new bike and are happy with the power from the 650. Just want a more comfortable bike for the longer rides. Thanks for all useful reviews!
Just came in from a days ride with my 3 months old V-Strom 650. It has absolutely changed my riding - earlier I've had custom-type bikes, and didn't know driving on sand roads could be that fun. Not a direct off-road -bike but on all kinds of roads working well. Being quite economic with gasoline and service doesn't harm either.
Thanks for making this video. Heard of you from the guys at NLMT so watched a few of your videos after taking the Direct Access course with them. After watching this video I spent a day on Autotrader and eBay and impulsively ended up with a superb 1yo DL650 XT in black/red with bars, grips, a Scotoiler, luggage and LED indicators- spotted, seen and bought within a day and have to agree with every point you made. This bike does everything well and for the money it’s unbelievable value. Compared against the TigerSport 660 - fantastic but £4kmore for the same spec and rare second hand, the Versys - lovely but didn’t feel as easy/nice to ride and the Tracer - brilliant looks, very comfy but needs a lot more riding than someone of my advanced years and limited skills can give. Learned on a SV650, this is better for going places, love it, thanks for your wise words/time, keep going please….
About a month back I did a short demo ride on the street version of the DL1000. Like you on the 650, I wasn't expecting much as most of the magazines gave it somewhat lackluster reviews. I think subconsciously they always compare bikes like these to the BMW GS series. Well like you I was very pleasantly surprised at what a great bike it was. I'm 6'1" and 220 lbs. (yes, my doctor tells me to lose weight) and found it roomy and easy to handle. It had power, handling, comfort and the brakes were very good. If I was in the market for a new bike, it would be on my short list.
I agree, hugely under rated by the mags and "pro" reviewers....although to be fair no-one says these are bad, just lacking in fun.....I found it great though!
great video and review as always. you are really top class at what you do and I don't know why you don't have more subs. it would be great if you could share your thoughts about the versys x300 one day. safe travels sir.
Thank you Haluk - very kind of you to say so....would love to ride the Versys, unfortunately so far I've had no luck getting hold of Kawasaki...I will keep trying so stay tuned!
My buddy just picked up a used 2018 in black. He loves it just as this review. He gets great mileage 60+mpg and 5.3 gallon tank = 300+ mile range! Not a ton of power but gives it all smoothly without complaint. Nice.
I've got the Honda NC700X which I think falls into the same category. It's successor/improvement, the NC750X, is an equally capable all-rounder, not much fun but VERY practical and useful. It looks a bit "too" fancy compared to mine if you ask me, but it's a bike you might want to have a look at one day. Keep up the good videos, thanks!
current 2015 model owner. Fantastic machine all round. can really ride the balls out of it, right off the edges of the tyres. just come back from 1700 miles 4 day trip round the Alps. one day of which was 16 Hours in the saddle.
Great Review. I had the 2013 and looking back I have to say it was the most well rounded, comfortable bike I've owned. It's a sweet little motor and you can do some serious touring, even 2up with luggage. My only niggle was the build quality. Superb do everything bike.
In 2019 I purchased a 650 V-Strom as a bit of an unexpected purchase. I was in the market for my first bike and rented a V-Strom for a weekend. After having it for 3 days I knew I wanted one. Rode it 2-up in the black forest twice now and cannot complain about the bike at all.
This is a very popular bike with adventure bikers here in South America , especially the ones who come from Brazil , for all the reasons you mentioned . When I speak to them they say the build and reliability are outstanding.
I just picked up the same model today. I had a 1200 Explorer but even though the 650 vstrom only has about half the hp and torque of the Triumph it goes much better than those figures would suggest. The vstrom is the 35th bike I have owned but I did start at 15 years old and I am almost 60. I've previously owned two 650 vstrom's a 2008 and a 2012 and they just get better every generation. This 2017 vstrom is a cracking bike so I am pleased I bought it. It's about 43kg lighter than the Triumph so it feels like a push bike in comparison especially moving it out of the garage. Mr MF you do interesting and informative bike reviews, I look forward to getting notifications from your channel all the way from Queensland Australia so keep them coming. PS just for interest I dropped about $10k on the Triumph today after just over 2 years and 34,000km. When I sold the 2012 Vstrom at 4 years old and close to 80,000km I only did a bit over $4k. Go figure even taking original purchase price of both into consideration?
I like the fact you were prepared to be underwhelmed and were pleasantly surprised.Exactly what i thought when i rode an older version of this machine. I enjoyed that review, thanks again Mr Flyer.
Another fine review! My first bike was a 2006 DL650. It was actually a hoot to ride, very practical and gave me zero issues. Simple can be good! Cheers!
Hey TMF, another great review, thanks. Torn between this and the Versys 650 for my first serious bike after my A2. Any thoughts? Hope you had a good Christmas. All the best for the New Year. Looking forward to more good stuff!
Another great review, I've always been a bit curious about the 650 V-Strom, thinking that it would be under powered and handle like a boat....I've always like the general look of the bike, but I agree the dash mount set up looks like some old Harry Moss add on ..but the actual instruments look good.... like you said it's the only thing that I don't like either ... I am impressed though.... yes a good all rounder.. I like it !!!
Love your reviews. I toured Europe on a VStrom 650 a couple of years ago and the bike was a pleasure to ride. Now living in the Philippines and the roads are crap so just using a ninja 400 and Z650. Your vids make me long for UK roads again. Keep up the good work and ride safe.
Delighted to see you review the Wee Strom. It's on my (fairly long) shortlist as a route back into biking following my back injury last year. Currently top of that list, but with the Triumph 800 XR close behind. Look forward to the 1000 review too...
Hoping to ride one of these all over North America. Love the flow of your review . Incredible value in Toronto at the moment . About half the UK price.
These bikes always seem to get slated for being ugly but I think it looks great in that colour scheme. Also seems amazing value. I notice that here in Oz when you see these on the second hand market they often seem to have done much higher mileages than usual which suggests to me that they are robust bikes and bought by people who actually do a lot of riding as opposed to being a temperamental weekend toy.
Ive watched this video a few times over the past couple years and finally pulling the trigger on buying on. Selling my Himalayan for something a little more grunt. Thanks for the review
Dave Co I loved my Himalayan it was simple, lightweight and had a unique style that had a lot of people stopping to ask about it. But, the V strom is just a better bike in almost every way but price. More power, proven reliability and way more comfortable on a long trip. Just being able to keep up with US highway traffic is a huge plus too. However, If the Himalayan had 10 more horsepower and a 6th gear I still might have it. The enfield is just way too underpowered.
Great Vid as always - only been riding 3 or so years and my first big bike was a baby v-strom. It was a great bike to gain experience on. Now moved onto a new BMW S1000 XR SE Sport - absolutely love it!!! Keep the Vids coming,
Brings me back to when I had the old DL1000. My favourite bike, extremely under rated. Think I fancy this, the new 1000 is a bit more pricey but I bet it's a peach 👌
I purchased a 2015 1000 model, nice enough. Sold it after a year due to lack of use. But fancy another now, but think I might just go for the old model as I love that bike
Yeah, that's the great thing about bikes, some suit and some don't. I test rode both the 2015 Versys and 2015 V-Strom, and found the Versys to be the better on pretty much all aspects. Power delivery, handling and comfort. So I bought one. 65k miles in now and still loving it. I'm 5'8' and found the Versys to be narrower in the seat than the V-Strom which lets me get the balls of both feet on the ground :)
Suzuki hasn't overly inspired me enough to buy one of their bikes but I have to say I've always thought very highly of the V-Strom offerings, though at one point they almost seemed a bit bulbous in the tank/fairing area. These newer models are looking quite sharp both in the 1000 and 650 series. Nicely done again TMF. Oh, I have to say you are one lucky guy with the beautiful roads you get to ride on. Reminds me very much of my home state of Maine and many of the place around the New England states in the US. Just fantastic. The riding here in Florida just doesn't come close (personal opinion).
Flat and hot and humid in the summer, boring state from what I have seen of the roads. I spoke to one rider in the Ft. Lauderdale area and I asked him what they did for twisties and he laughed and said, "freeway onramps and offramps". I have to say where I live in Northern California at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is a motorcyclists dream come true.
Excellent review, thanks. While you are correct in pointing out the basic (though complete) instrumentation and features, you must remember that the V-Strom/DL650 is targeted for a modest price point. It's a lot of bike for the money. I bought my '15 "Adventure" ABS version, panniers & mounts, engine guards, added center stand, heated grips, hand guards, and factory tail mounting plate for $7100 out the door. (It's not uncommon to find brand new 1-2 year old dealer stock.) Functional upgrades: top case, LED lighting, digital speedo correction, and braided-SS brake lines. Incredible value for a durable, comfortable all purpose machine. I found your channel only a few weeks back, and have already enjoyed many of your reviews. Good basic info for everyday riders.
Another good no nonsense review about the bike I am looking forward to having a test ride of one when they arrive down under later this year.I reckon your quote about the white van man is priceless keep up the good reviews.
Solid video as ever sir. I had the Wee Strom 650 on my short list late last year, but it was pipped at the post by the Tracer 900. I liked the Suzuki as you did, very solid, very capable. I know the 'all-rounder' bikes aren't to everyones fancy, but if you only have time, money and space for one bike, then you get what fits!
Cool review I had a 1000xt a few bikes ago, after looking at all the big adv bikes again (previously had a r1200gsa te an 800gs as well) I'm pretty sure I'm getting the 650xt next should be interesting after a year of riding my classic bikes. Sounds very similar to other Suzuki's I've had really no nonsense with good fuelling.
Another great review. I'm sat in the Philippines watching it as I'm back the blighty next month and I'll be picking up a new 2019 VSTROM 650. Rode one around Europe a few years ago and just couldn't fault it. I may even buy one from your dealer.
I really liked this review, it was a very good overview of the bike and MF described well where this bike would "fit in". I have been thinking more about getting a machine that is capable, economical and comfortable for longer rides and maybe taking it on gravel roads off the beaten path once in awhile. I have a group ride planned for Death Valley CA USA in Feb 2018 and I plan on riding my Harley Road King. I'm actually a Ducati owner, having had five of them in the past, the Harley came into play when I wanted something for the longer hauls, but it's a heavy beast and obviously for blacktop only. I believe the VStrom will perform well on the highways, the 2018 model advertises a tall 6th gear, I don't know if the 2017 has the same feature. I recall reading reviews of the bike some years back and there were complaints of the high gear not being high enough at speeds over 65mph the bike made you aware of it. Back then when I was thinking of buying a bike this negative made me consider the 1000cc VStrom over the 650, but apparently this has been resolved? At this time the 1000cc VStrom is just too big and heavy for my needs and much more costly too. Going off any blacktop road adds a new dimension in riding and to properly explore Death Valley one would want a dual sport or some variant and I think the 650 VStrom can handle the many maintained dirt and gravel roads down there, especially with appropriate tires. Getting there from where I live is about an 8 or 9 hour hgwy drive, I think even with some mild to moderate knobby tires longer road trips will be ok. One of my main concerns would be wind protection, it was the deal breaker and why I sold my older Ducati Multistrada, even after trying two other aftermarket shields. If the stock windshield on the VStrom is lacking, I've already spotted a taller and wider aftermarket version. Again, excellent down to earth review of the bike.
John S Sorry to Butt in here, but I’m a Harley owner, who has ridden Death Valley (albeit not on the Harley...rather a rented Triumph Trophy), and I have a 2017 DL650. I don’t know about any gearing changes for the 2018 model year, but my 2017 is just fine at 65 mph. As for the windshield, I replaced the stock shield with the adjustable Givi Airflow, and it’s fantastic. I highly recommend it. I’m really loving my V-Strom. I would love to take it out to Death Valley someday.
Yes!!! I've been waiting for this review. As a rider who hasn't experienced anywhere near the range of different bikes you have ridden I'm delighted you like it. I own a 2012 650 v storm it makes me feel good you like it. Though I did like the Triumph tiger 800 as it felt less top heavy. But as you say this is a excellent bike. For multiple disciplines. Great vid as always M Flyer. Superb!!!
Cheers Phil - and yes it surprised me how much I liked this too, a really good all rounder I reckon. I also think that Yellow scheme looks pretty good....
a great review as always mate! please can you do one on the 1000!! (ive just bought one and would love to hear your comments...) love the yellow! (thats what I went for) seems to be a real hidden gem this bike.. Ive been riding for 20 years and personally I think this is one of the best new bikes available!
Great review of a much under rated motorbike. I have the new DL 1000 and overall I like the bike and noted in your commentary you would like to ride the 1000. I would be interested in your take on this machine to see if we agree on the good and the bad!! Keep up the reviews I look forward to each new one.
As a 2015 V-Strom 650 base model owner in Australia , they are a comfy work horse and soaks up the B & C grade roads . Enough power and torque to get out of trouble and still great with fuel economy .The engine has been used in the SV650 for years and the strom since 2004 and just kept updating as the years rolled on. I collected parts to throw on the bike about 12 mths before I purchased it . It was Run out model and payed $A 9999.00 ride away 12 mths rego and they installed all my ad -ons - 20mm lowering links , bar risers- up and back and crash knobs at engine and rear swing arm for free . Installed a thick aluminum sump guard and 12v socket and rear ventura rear rack with a 50lt and 25 lt ventura bags that vip together , back to back . A happy 5 ft 7 " owner . :)
Thanks for the great review Andy. I Was looking to upgrade my NC750x to a late model GS (which I'd had back in 2012-16) or a V-Strom 1050. However, having seen a nearly new 650 V-Strom XT with almost every conveivable extra on it at the dealer, and considering the majority of my riding is in into London, I came back and had a look at your review. Having ridden the 1050 and 650, there is obviously a clear difference, but based on where and how I'd be riding, I decided to have a punt on the 650 saving myself almost £5k into the bargain. Now I'm the proud owner of said 650, I feel a lot more satisfied than I did with the very utilitarian NC and feel I have a good compromise between fun and commuting practicality. Thanks again. ;-)
I've ridden the previous V Strom - nice riding position, mirrors like barn doors - not everyone's cup of tea (especially in the looks dept) but these things are traditionally very reliable and offer great value for money. Steve
They are great bikes. I love Suzuki, both cars and bikes, they just know how to make something that is no-nonsense and just works and is reliable, and they're always fun. The fact that they're usually great value is an added bonus.
really really like this review. I am looking to start from scratch. with lessons and test. so am very interested in the way forward, in terms of type if bike. a lot if my friends have a a all round 650 would be perfect. Btw I am in my 50's
Lovely 'little' bike. Rode one a couple of weeks ago and like you, I was very pleasantly surprised. Very flickable, flat torque, comfy, fun bike. I like it in yellow too, but I'm weird......gold rim spoked wheels are the ones to go for. I liked it so much I bought the company! Well, not of course.......Another great review.
yet another great review, hoping you have the 1000cc version to reviews on, from a selfish point of view as that the one I plumbed for after riding the two. not as light as my old Street triple but as a jack of all trades it's great.
Again, nice review :-) My comment is about it's great great uncle the SV650. Back in my ST100 days, I took an SV650 for a blast during Suzuki demo day. I had taken it's big brother the 1000 for a blast prior to it, and was not expecting anything but anemic compare to the 1000. *insert Gomer Pyle quote* surprise surprise! What an absolute JOY it was. I just did not want to get off the thing :-) That was 1999.
I've been overlooking the V-Strom lineup for a few years. I'mma have to check your 1000cc version and who knows... it might sneak into my lustful obsession for the Honda ATAS.
I love my 2010 DL ......such a confidence inspiring bike. So comfortable and solid, dare i say i like the look of the older one more , but look forward to riding the new one. nice review thankyou!
Couldn’t agree more about riding modes. I’ve only ridden one bike where I thought I’d ever need any modes other than sports mode and that was a Tiger Sport 1050 which had a dreadful throttle which was either on or off so it was constantly either trying to wheelie or trying to lock up the rear wheel. I love vTwins so I think I may need to check our the vstroms. Great review as ever TMS. Thanks
Perfect review for this bike TMF, you hit the nail on the head with your summing up at the end of the video on all points. This was my choice for a first bike, I use it for commuting everyday but also living locally to the Brecons regular spirited rides with a few friends are always on the cards and it holds its own. Now with nearly 10k on the clock it's proven to be reliable and very cheap to run. Was actually looking through your playlists for a review on a BMW s1000xr as your my go to reviewer and i have a test ride coming up couldn't find one so watched a review on a bike I already own instead as we all do ; )
Thanks for your reply I looked harder and found the xr review, very good as always however going into my test ride wondering if I could ever love a ginger child 😁.
you and those white vans! LOL I did like the tail rack on the back of my old 2013 VStrom 650. The Kawi Versys 650 (which I have now) does not have the rack. and not easy to find aftermarket. BLAH! Great video, keep em coming!
That's my bike! (Ok I have the '12 model, but practically the same.) Love it, except it's so fugly. Thinking about splashing out on a set of those gold spoked wheels (to replace the boring but practical 3-spoke alloy wheels) to tart her up. Test rode the 1000 version the other day, to me it didn't corner as nicely, had a pendulum feeling. Will be looking forward with great anticipation to hear your thoughts on the 1000. Really enjoy watching your reviews. Cheers!
Thank you for an EXCELLENT review. The DL 650's & DL 1000's used are very reasonably priced here in the States. I have a 2007 DR 650 Dual Sport which has caused me NO problems. Am seriously considering parting with it in favor of a DL 650.
Bruce Forster I am in the same boat I have Dr650 but need a 2 up bike now that I have a missus, can’t part with the DR so will will now have 3 bikes dr650, bonneville T120 and soon vstrom650xt
Hi great review 👍 How would you compare this with a Africa twin 1100 adventure sports(manual), which one would you suggest as a overall better bike to buy ? Thanks in advance!
nice review ! i had the first edition of the vstrom in 2003 and i loved it verry much. had many big roadtrips on it ! these days i drive a 1999 triumph speedtriple ! but when i heard of this new version Vstrom 650 i am think replacing the triumph with this bike
How are the vibrations? I rode a 2014 ABS after wanting one for months and months and I was so disappointed in the ergonomics and the terrible buzziness in the handlebars. It also gave me severe helmet buffeting and blew all around on the interstate. I was supppperr glad I test rode one after that because I was ready to buy one that day.
Great review as always, and you really manage to review the bikes for what they are (as opposed to some journalists who have a tendency to use bikes twice the price and with a different purpose as a benchmark..)
Another good review, well done. i have the v strom 1000 and agree with everything you said apart from wind protection. i find wind screen useless though on my v-strom. Good bikes but definitely built to a budget compared to the bmw's and Triumphs. Wish i could have afforded one of those! keep up the good work.
Another well done review! I too will be waiting for your review of he 1000. Wondering if the power, suspension upgrades, and quick adjust windshield are worth the money.
Great review - Infact I've just bought one - moving on from an MT07 for pretty much all the reasons you like the bike. Funnily enough I quite like the dash...
Great review, I could see this as a contender for possible future bike. Question is which would you choose this Suzuki or Triumph Tiger? Which would be the other bike I would be looking at.
Good review. I currently have a 2015 V-Strom 650 and it appears this one has the same qualities. What amazes me still is well it goes round corners, and easily surprises sports bike riders! I strangely prefer the instruments on my version, I don't much like all the black surrounds and everything seems a bit darker. Please review the 1000 as that may be my next move! :-)
Yes I may well have to see if I can borrow a 1000cc version for a go, this one really impressed me, I was pleasantly surprised by it...thanks for watching - TMF
What about when you put a pillion onto it? Still great? I am looking for a bike which I could take onto easy off-road parts of the world (alone) while also be able to tour comfortably with a pillion around Italian and Swiss Alps while also getting good mileage for commuting. Is that even possible? I currently own a Yamaha TDM900 and it's perfect for pretty much everything except off-road. On paper, the V-strom looks really similar but I think its off-road capabilities are superior. I like how the TDM900 is basically uneffected when with pillion (as to when without). It has great power (86 HP and 88 Nm) while getting great economy (around 4,5 L/100km when there are no traffic lights or traffic jams), although commuting gets me up to 5,5 L/100km. Thanks for this review and any additional input!
Glad I found the review I have been looking at these today. Quite a bit cheaper than the price you quoted at millennium motorcycles. I hope you will get to review the benelli 502. I gave them a quick look over and for 5grand they look good. Too good to be true I imagine. Ride safe👍
Agreed, that was pretty much my thinking as I rode it...nice machine and great value...

@@RonaiHenrik for your purpose I would said Vstrom 1000 if you like to go fast in twisties with your pillon, if you like riding cool I would say the vstrom 650 no doubt
Volt7 Cool Tangs ... she’s missing on looks a bit... Not Fugly mind you... just Not me 1st pick for the Prom... Functionally I do LOVE this bike.
How this guys reviews get dislikes baffles me. As always a superb non bias review from an obviously knowledgeable biker. Keep em coming!

Some angry Yamaha MT riders dislike this review. ;-)

Great bike.
Well I just bought one, all the bike you ever need in the real world!!!
Congratulations - and agreed Mario....
Thank goodness for Suzuki!
yep eyes on the road, fuel gauge and speedo is all you need.
Bbrghghg - keep warm Ray!
Fair enough
My son went round the world on older model Charlie and Ewan route. No problems whatsoever
Wow, there's testament to it's reliability....
@@TheMissendenFlyer these machines will do hundreds of thousands of miles if you keep them maintained. Let’s hear it for engines not tuned to the hilt.
You do more bike reviews than MCN. keep them coming.
I don't think so, but appreciate the sentiment! All the best - TMF
TheMissendenFlyer I'd say your reviews are more balanced. MCN and others of its type only seem to put effort into the big sports bikes tests.
Better reviews anyways.
danofzanzibar
i agree
whenever mcn do a back to back test...ìt's always the fastest that wins.
for that reason,I hav'nt purchased it for approx 10 years
The rags almost never find anything to criticise.
Thank you Daniel - much appreciated!
another great review!
However, if your fortunate enough to have a few bikes in the garage, the ‘Strom is the best bike to mix with the others.
i always like watching this guys reviews, always strait forward & honest. great bike & thinking of getting one.
The type of bike easily dismissed as nothing special and not one to impress other people, but a bike that'd make fun transport for commuting and touring and eventually learn to love. Another good review - and a vote of encouragement to try out the 1000 to see if it's the same but better, iykwim.
Yes - will certainly give the 1000 a go as soon as I can arrange it.....
Another awesome review from one of my favorite British Motorcycle reviewers!! I absolutely love my Suzuki V Strom 650. Best bike to do everything with. Especially when you have the big panniers on it!
Thank you JJ!
I'm just about to but my third 650 V-Strom. It is really great for one or two-up riding and that v-twin engine is tried and tested and seemingly bulletproof. It's just SO easy to ride. I put more miles on my V-Stroms than with any other bikes I've ever had.
Nice one!
Another great, balanced review. And kudos for not getting flustered or waving your arms around at the lady who pulled out right in front of you while using her phone at 2:20. Drivers do dangerous and stupid things, motorbikes are invisible. Getting upset doesn't fix that.
Completely agree - thanks for watching...
Review is over 4 yrs old now and still holds up and speaks to this model as much as it did in 2017.
Thanks For Watching Stuart!
I think that v strom 650 is the best all rounder bike. Best value for money. Bought it in September, done 3500 miles and i love it.
As a touring bike, do you think it can do 70-75 mph for hours on highway. Or should I look to the 1000.
@@georgeblumenthal7938 I have a '15 Adv model, which is largely the same bike. TheMissendenFlyer
review is spot on -- competent do-everything bike for very modest money.
What’s it like 2 up with the missus on hwy
+musikerman52 Glad to hear you're getting on well with it...
Congratulations on the new bike Clive, and thank you for your kind words about my video!
Suzuki really nailed it with this bike. Great review. Thanks
great video and review as always. you are really top class at what you do and I don't know why you don't have more subs.
it would be great if you could share your thoughts about the versys x300 one day.
safe travels sir.
Nice.
Yes a decent honest motorcycle - I have the new 1000 VStrom on loan at the moment.....
Yes I would like a crack at one of those, will see what I can do - thanks for watching and for stopping by - TMF
current 2015 model owner. Fantastic machine all round. can really ride the balls out of it, right off the edges of the tyres.
just come back from 1700 miles 4 day trip round the Alps. one day of which was 16 Hours in the saddle.
Nice one...and nice bike for it...
I think I am changing my mind from the Versys 650 because it only has ABS. The Suzuki has TC also. Great review and thanks again....Sal : 0
Great Review. I had the 2013 and looking back I have to say it was the most well rounded, comfortable bike I've owned. It's a sweet little motor and you can do some serious touring, even 2up with luggage. My only niggle was the build quality. Superb do everything bike.
+Mat Newton I agree that this is a much under rated machine - really enjoyed riding it and I have to say the build quality seemed fine to me?
In 2019 I purchased a 650 V-Strom as a bit of an unexpected purchase. I was in the market for my first bike and rented a V-Strom for a weekend. After having it for 3 days I knew I wanted one. Rode it 2-up in the black forest twice now and cannot complain about the bike at all.
I'm the same, rented one for a 3 days touring with a mate, and now I've gone out and bought one.
This is a very popular bike with adventure bikers here in South America , especially the ones who come from Brazil , for all the reasons you mentioned . When I speak to them they say the build and reliability are outstanding.
+David Quinn Yep, nothing not to like (except maybe the dash).....
Congratulations Frank, lovely bike! Enjoy and thanks for watching and stopping by - appreciated....TMF
Great all round real world review, looks like a pretty good simple bike that would be a loyal and faithful friend, a Watson to your Sherlock Mr Flyer
I like the fact you were prepared to be underwhelmed and were pleasantly surprised.Exactly what i thought when i rode an older version of this machine.
I enjoyed that review, thanks again Mr Flyer.
Thank you for watching Mr Hog!
Another fine review! My first bike was a 2006 DL650. It was actually a hoot to ride, very practical and gave me zero issues. Simple can be good! Cheers!
Agreed 100%
v-strom surprised me as well, very solid, good quality bike. I wish only Suzuki hired some new designers for their team :)
Suzukis are very underrated motorcycles, great bikes.
I agree...
they still sell well so i wont call them underrated
I'm picking up one of these on Monday. Planning some very long teips arpund Australia on it. Looks like I've made a good decision.
Congratulations Paddy and enjoy!
Hey TMF, another great review, thanks. Torn between this and the Versys 650 for my first serious bike after my A2. Any thoughts? Hope you had a good Christmas. All the best for the New Year. Looking forward to more good stuff!
Thanks very informative buddy as a now 57 yr old man want to keep driving love this bike so thanks again
2022 and just passed my A licence. My commute to work is 50 miles each way and this seems like the best choice. Thank you!
My pleasure!
I love analog gauges, Sun light nor glare has any effect.
Totally agree with you. Coolest dash ever...
Mr. Flyer, God has put the white vans there to slow you down and keep you safe. Thanks for another great video! Sal : )
Yes you may be right Sal, perhaps I should be grateful!
It surprised me Glenn, within literally a minute of riding it I was thinking "this is really good" - dunno why I thought I wouldn't like it...
Crikey things must be bad if you’re “longing for uk roads”!
Haha you can't imagine. Try street dogs on every corner and suicidal bus drivers. But at least its warm so more riding time.
Delighted to see you review the Wee Strom. It's on my (fairly long) shortlist as a route back into biking following my back injury last year. Currently top of that list, but with the Triumph 800 XR close behind. Look forward to the 1000 review too...
You could do a lot worse than this one Nick - and hope you have a speedy recovery (although by the sounds of it, "speedy" isn't really the word...)
Hoping to ride one of these all over North America. Love the flow of your review . Incredible value in Toronto at the moment . About half the UK price.
Wow, snap one up quick Bob!
Yes good point
Ive watched this video a few times over the past couple years and finally pulling the trigger on buying on. Selling my Himalayan for something a little more grunt. Thanks for the review
Congratulations!
Josh Prince how do you find it compared the Himalayan ?
Keep the Vids coming,
+Graham Kenworthy Cheers Graham and will do....
Never been a big lover of the vstrom but gotta say it looks and performs pretty decent in ur vid
Direct comparison with Kawasaki Versys 650 would be good.
Yes I would love that, sadly I've not had any joy (yet) from my local Kawasaki dealer....doesn't return my calls/e-mails :0(
TheMissendenFlyer their loss!
I test rode a new Versys back to back with a new Vstrom couple yrs ago.. The Vstrom was better in pretty much every aspect. That yellow xt is lovely
test the vulcan if you can, a very intersting bike..
Thanks Allan - but you do get plenty of sunshine! (and Mickey Mouse).....
Thank you Chips - great name by the way (you owe your mum and dad for that one)....
Indeed! Cheers Gura...
If you do do mention my name to them!
@@TheMissendenFlyer I just sent them and enquiry about a 650xt they have and mentioned you to them.
Thanks for the kind comments - much appreciated! All the best - TMF
Loved this 'baby v-strom'. Rode really good during the test
Yes, nice bike...
TheMissendenFlyer do you have a Facebook page perhaps?
The mirrors look ridiculous. But they are excellent.
a great review as always mate! please can you do one on the 1000!! (ive just bought one and would love to hear your comments...) love the yellow! (thats what I went for) seems to be a real hidden gem this bike.. Ive been riding for 20 years and personally I think this is one of the best new bikes available!
Will do my best G dizzle, lot's of people asking for it! Thanks for watching and for stopping by - TMF
Great review of a much under rated motorbike. I have the new DL 1000 and overall I like the bike and noted in your commentary you would like to ride the 1000. I would be interested in your take on this machine to see if we agree on the good and the bad!! Keep up the reviews I look forward to each new one.
Cheers Dave - I do now have the V-Strom 1000 ride in my diary, so stay tuned!
Great stuff Barry cheers....
And lowering it means losing the centre stand mate?
Steve
100% agree Steve....a good honest motorcycle....
They are great bikes. I love Suzuki, both cars and bikes, they just know how to make something that is no-nonsense and just works and is reliable, and they're always fun. The fact that they're usually great value is an added bonus.
I think you're spot on with that Pedro, great bikes at great prices it seems to me...thanks for watching - TMF
really really like this review. I am looking to start from scratch. with lessons and test. so am very interested in the way forward, in terms of type if bike. a lot if my friends have a a all round 650 would be perfect. Btw I am in my 50's
Sounds like this bike could be for you then....
great british humor and solid, basic owners review. The mirrors do a fine job "oh I think the lady behind is on the phone" lol!
I've just bought one. Same colour: 2017 XT version. Super machine. Cant wait to go discovering on her.
+Geoffrey Parker-Dixon Nice one!
Thank you - glad we concur.....
yet another great review, hoping you have the 1000cc version to reviews on, from a selfish point of view as that the one I plumbed for after riding the two. not as light as my old Street triple but as a jack of all trades it's great.
Sounds like I'm going to have to review the thousand, lots of people asking for that here....I'll see what I can do, stay tuned!
+Danny Bumpkins :0)
Thanks
Cheers Zork - thanks for watching - TMF
Perfect review for this bike TMF, you hit the nail on the head with your summing up at the end of the video on all points. This was my choice for a first bike, I use it for commuting everyday but also living locally to the Brecons regular spirited rides with a few friends are always on the cards and it holds its own. Now with nearly 10k on the clock it's proven to be reliable and very cheap to run.
Was actually looking through your playlists for a review on a BMW s1000xr as your my go to reviewer and i have a test ride coming up couldn't find one so watched a review on a bike I already own instead as we all do ; )
I have reviewed the XR, there’s a video somewhere!
Thank you for another great review. Can you please do occasionally a bit of highway ride and maybe mild offroad with the suitable bikes.
Cheers!
Cheers Sam - looks like I am going to have to line up a 1000 V Strom review then by popular demand!
Thanks in advance!
just bought mine! so excited
Congratulations!
nice review ! i had the first edition of the vstrom in 2003 and i loved it verry much. had many big roadtrips on it !
these days i drive a 1999 triumph speedtriple ! but when i heard of this new version Vstrom 650 i am think replacing the triumph with this bike
+Benelux rider It is a surprisingly nice machine...
I didn't notice any otherwise I would have said - big vibes aren't high on my wish list either!
Great review as always! Now that you’ve ridden the versys 650 and vstrom 650, do you have a preference? Please do the new versys 1000 SE LT.
Versus I think - feels a bit more agile...
Great review although your disdain of the display seems odd since it replicates the analog/digital display of the old street triple.
I’m not keen on that either!
Great review as always, and you really manage to review the bikes for what they are (as opposed to some journalists who have a tendency to use bikes twice the price and with a different purpose as a benchmark..)
Thank you :0)
Another good review, well done. i have the v strom 1000 and agree with everything you said apart from wind protection. i find wind screen useless though on my v-strom. Good bikes but definitely built to a budget compared to the bmw's and Triumphs. Wish i could have afforded one of those! keep up the good work.
Cheers Daniel...I was a bit surprised how much I liked this bike to be honest, really nice machine....
Another well done review! I too will be waiting for your review of he 1000. Wondering if the power, suspension upgrades, and quick adjust windshield are worth the money.
Cheers Vic - it seems I am going to have to have another chat with my friends at Ford and Ellis and see if I can borrow the 1000!!
Great review - Infact I've just bought one - moving on from an MT07 for pretty much all the reasons you like the bike. Funnily enough I quite like the dash...
Good stuff - to me this just feels more substantial than the Yamaha...
Great review, I could see this as a contender for possible future bike. Question is which would you choose this Suzuki or Triumph Tiger? Which would be the other bike I would be looking at.
Good question - both brilliant bikes, I love the Tiger, but the V Strom feels a bit more substantial...
Ride safe👍
Yes I'm hoping I may be able to ride one of those shortly...all getting a bit busy though...so many bikes, so little time!
