I give a pretty in depth review (for a first ride) of my new 2019 Suzuki V-Strom 1000. In the review I compare it with the V-Strom 650XT that I owned last year as well as giving a quick breakdown of costs when owning the 1000cc V-Strom. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

After putting 200 miles on my new 2019 XT Adventure, I hsve to say you're review was 100%, spot on. I like everything about this bike.
The weather is sunny with temps close to 70 f, today, rare for March in Pennsylvania. Let's see if I can't knock off another 200 miles today.

Love that bike! I have the 2019 blue and white XT, so smooth and just a joy to ride.
I picked up a 2014 V-Strom and I absolutely love it! Smooth at any speed, handles well, and plenty of power. I also really like the ABS braking and the traction control. Very non-intrusive but there when you need it.

New 1000 XTs are on sale for £9.6k+. Low/modest mileage for £7.5k+
As a big, comfy, grunty, tech-lite litre-plus ADV with modest off-road pretentions (assuming correct tyres) this is bargain of the century!
Equivalent new GSs, Africa Twins, 1190/1290s or Multistradas require much deeper pockets and complex major services from Honda, BMW, KTM and Ducati can make your eyes bleed. A friend of mine back in 2006 (that's 14 years ago) had a major service on her (well-used) 1150 GS - I think it had around 40k on the clock; the bill was £430!! I can STILL remember her distress!
Suzuki shows the way forward and FORCES you to ask "why exactly and specifically would I want to spend circa £5k MORE on one of the glamour ADVs?"
Thanks. I couldn't agree more, the V Strom is an absolute bargain and gives you everything you need. All the fancy gizmos on the other bikes might be nice to have but the V Strom gets the job done. Just think how many trips all that cash saved could get you. Assuming we're ever allowed out of the house again 😁
@@TripleB6036 more gizmo's means more things that can fail. Too much electronics on bikes (and cars) today. Suzuki knows how to build good bikes that rarely fail. V-strom 1000 is the best bike i ever owned.

I’m sure you will love the V Strom. Ive just picked up a new 2019 Africa twin here in the Philippines as there are no deals on the V Strom and the RRP is overpriced here.
The V Strom definitely handles better on the road and certainly in corners.

I've had both and the 1000 IS a big difference in acceleration.
My advice having owned both 650 and 1000 is to get the 650 if commuting and the 1000 if it’s a weekend machine. The power of the 1000 is more fun. The 650 fuel economy is a lot better. Both have absolute star engines so you won’t regret either.
Yep I'd pretty much agree with that having owned both as well. Although I think they're equally fun and the power difference isn't that much. Well not enough to make it a major differentiator in my decision making process. For me the 1000's brakes and adjustable suspension would be bigger factors.
Great review. Spot on about the brakes between the 650 and 1000. I do miss the fuel economy of my old 650, but the brakes on the 1000 are a big plus.

Haha yep you were right. I spent last week avoiding mud from tractors. Hoping for a few dry days this week. Yeh I must admit I quite like it in black, must be slimming for the big girl 😁. My other bike is a bit more lairy though 😁
Yes you're right, I used to render the videos in lower quality to keep file sizes down to allow me to upload them in just one night with Philippines Internet. Even this one I haven't rendered it at the best quality yet (still better than before) as I'm using mobile Internet until BT activate my fibre next week. Then the quality should jump again.
I have the 2019 XT 1000 and after 13000 miles I average 50 mpg so fuel consumption appears to get better, best all round bike I have ever owned.
Congratulations on the new bike, and a very nice review. Yesterday I was looking at a 2019 XT Adventure, with aluminum panniers, engine guards and heated grips. They are asking $12,600, here in Pennsylvania. I'm looking for a bit more power and torque, than my 650 Versey.

Thanks. That sounds like a fantastic deal. You can't go wrong with this bike. Plenty of Torque and can do pretty much anything you ask of it.
From 1980-2016, I rode 4 cylinder bikes 1000cc and up. I had a ZRX1200 for 15 years. While I like the 650 Versey, I miss the torque of a larger engine.

Very nice. I like the analog meter much better. Love the look of the Suzuki logo on the seat. I’ve got a SV1000 btw. Almost bought a 2023 V Strom 650. Great bike but like the SV engine tuning and hearing better.
For me this one was much better looking than the successor model, especially in black. Agree about the seat logo and analogue meters.
When I saw this bike I hated it. I called it stupid. Then my son convinced me to take one for a test drive. Bought a brand new one the next day.
Haha that’s why test rides are so useful. Sadly we don’t get them in the Philippines. You have to buy without testing.

I was very interested on your views on this bike as I also have just bought the same model :) As of yet, it languishes in the garage, at least until the weather improves. So maybe won't be using it for another month. I am looking forward to riding it though. :)
Keep your fingers crossed for some decent weather. You can't go wrong with this bike. It does everything well, very comfortable and plenty of power.

I have the same bike (2015) I live in Norway in an area where there's a lot of mountains and curves. When touring/cruising longer distances I get an average of 4.2-4.3 l/100 km. That is about 65 imperial mpg (~55 us mpg). I think that is pretty nice figures.

got same bike 2018xt model. 3 yrs 38000km. its decent. can be fast, feels long but never heavy. i find best windscreen setting is NO windscreen(yes i ride all year round, everyday. we dont get alot of rain in western australia). good bike will lean n corner well. very decent road bike. and yeah its thirsty, even with the wanky euro emmissions crap and lean factory settings. smaller front sprocket livens it up and makes 6th gear more useable.
How was it like the first time you drove on the other side of the rode when you came to the Philippines? I forgot that the UK uses the left side same as Japan.
I actually found it OK as I had been riding a lot in Europe where they drive on the right. Getting used to all the dogs on the road in the Philippines took a little longer 🐕
@@TripleB6036 yeah specially at night when they lie and mate in the middle of the road. Hahaha.. rule of thumb is to let the dog avoid you. flicking the bike will increase the chances of crashing and/or hitting the dog.. just a loud honk and brakes will do.
Haha you sure it was the dogs in the road doing that 😜. Yep, most dogs recognise the horn out there. Just watch out for young dogs or fighting ones as they either don't know or are distracted. It's pretty easy to tell which dogs will be a danger by their body language most of the time.
@@TripleB6036 Philippines you have to be careful because they don’t give you much warning when a lane will end or if there is construction. Not much for traffic rules there.
Hi, new XT has 247 kg and your has 231 kg. I have the 2019 XT with 233 kg and I also love the bike since it is light and sporty to ride. Perfect for my day trips on curvy mountain roads and trips to Alps. For the price I dont need more.
I was out on mine today and its pretty much the perfect all around bike. I'm dying to take it to Europe for a proper tour. Yep for the price there's nothing to complain about.
How do you guys find the windscreen? Crazy buffeting or anything?

Hi! Congratulations on the new bike! Nice review. I would dispute a few points though.
First about premium fuel. The bike needs min of 95 octane, which is standard in Europe. The confusion comes from the fact that in some countries the standard is MUCH lower. I have tried the cheapest and most expensive petrol on UK market. Can't see the difference. I use premium if the price difference is acceptable, but there is no need really.
About fuel consumption, if you keep it below 4000 RPM (which is easy on this bike) it doesn't drink that much more than 650.
The wind shield. Some people report that they are happy with it, other the opposite. I'm in the 2nd group. My previous bike was 2014 V-strom 650. The buffeting on it was somewhat acceptable. It wasn't good, but I could live wit it. When I bought a 1000 and took it on a motorway for the first time, I bought Givi Airflow immediately. A 60 mile trip gave me a headache for the rest of the day, and it had a premium Suzuki touring screen on it! After a few days i got my Givi and installed it. I could not believe how big difference it made. the buffeting is 100% gone, and weather protection is much better.
Power delivery difference to 650. For me the difference was enormous. The grunt you have from 3000 RPM is insane! Don't get me wrong, I loved the engine in 650, but that torque! It's been almost two years and I'm still grinning like madman after i open the throttle!
Final point. THE muffler. Until I bought an aftermarket one i didn't really see how huge and heavy the original was. Not to mention the sound difference. The v twin rumble is so much more pronounced now. It isn't even louder, not much anyway, if you keep the baffle in. ;-) It got me thinking. Why didn't I change it earlier?! And I know why. It's because I'm cheap! Problem is that now I seat at home, bored to death and I found a really good deal!

I don't agree about the fuel economy. It feels way thirstier than the 650. I also don't agree about the power. It has a different character and of course is more powerful but I really wouldn't buy the 1000cc over the 650cc due to the power. It just doesn't feel that much faster. You simply don't have to rev it as hard to get that power. Now my Duke 790, yes the power on that is way better than either of these two and is a big differentiator but for me, the difference between the Strom and Wee Strom just isn't huge.
It's funny how one bike can be seen so differently. I find the screen fine on the 1000. I had a 2009 V Strom 650 and found the buffeting on that horrendous.

I got back from the Philippines myself, Jan.12, but do not see any riding weather in sight here on the wind swept prairies of southern alberta. Been looking at the VStrom myself. Have a Honda 500X to trade off. I don't need a lot of power, so i think the 650 should do the trick.
I feel you as I went out for a ride today and was blasted by Gail force winds and hail. Not much fun. I'm sure the 650 will be plenty for you. There's not a lot between it and the 1000.
How quiet is the 1000cc compared to the 650? I will buy a v strom this coming week...
Very similar sound. The 1000 is a bit of a deeper sound. That’s about the only difference I noticed.
Nice bike , I have been thinking about the v-strom 1000 vs 650 ...I am leaning towards the 1000 . I am thinking about those days when I ride with the gf ..how do you feel about 2 up with both bikes ? Thanks for the review !
If you can get the 1000cc for around the same price that I did then I'd definitely go for it. It does have a bit more grunt for two up with luggage but the 650 will also do two up fully loaded if you don't mind revving it. But the brakes and adjustable suspension on the 1000cc will also be much better 2 up riding. Are you in the UK? If so I can put you in touch with the dealer I bought from and they may be able to give you a deal on the 2019 1000cc if they still have stock.

I ride my 2013 DL650 2up regularly. Only wish for the 1,000 when climbing mountain passes. The 60mpg and offroad maneuverability makes the 650 the better bike for me. I'm 6'4", 250#.

Which heated grips do you recommend?
I had Oxford Adventure grips added and they worked perfectly so I'd recommend them. I never needed them above about 60% power even with thick gloves on they were toasty warm.

Normal unleaded is fine apparently. Just bought the same bike and was equally misled by the super unleaded reference in the owner's manual.
Chris Yates so what octane does it require officially? I only have one type of fuel where I live. 93RON is all I can purchase.

How does it compare to the 650?
Bit more torque, bit heavier much better brakes and suspension, worse MPG. I compare the new 1050XT to the latest 650XT in my latest video which you may want to check out.
Just bought vstrom 1000like your but in red I'm getting 59.5 to 62.3 mpg running bike in.only two things I don't like so far are ugly mirrors and exhaust going to change both. Suspension and engine are brilliant.
Congrats on the bike Terry. They’re great bikes and good value. Yeh the mirrors are barn doors but they’re effective. The exhaust is a beast for sure. Suspension engine and brakes are cracking though. Enjoy your bike.
What gloves do you wear?
These are Held Twin gloves. Really comfortable with a warm compartment and also just a dry compartment. Held are my favourite brand for gloves. Great quality but they’re not cheap.
The 2020 does not have a tft screen its the same one from the katana and is really hard to see in bright sun.
OK Yeh you're right it's an LCD screen, I really wasn't thinking about the technical differences just more that it's fully digital rather than analog and digital mix. Interesting to hear its hard to see in sunlight,. Shouldn't be a problem in the UK at the moment then 🙄

Look at the pillion foot pegs covered with mud. This bike really needs a tire hugger at the back. My missus always complained about her dirty shoes till i installed one.😊
I never rode this one with a pillion so never noticed that.

Loved the bike though. I’m back in Asia and literally considering what adventure bike to get for this year and am considering another VStrom, I’d like the 800 (can’t find stock) 1050XT , Africa Twin, Transalp or just go light with a CRF300L Rally. I e even looked at the CF Moto MT 800 Touring as it’s a bargain but not sure I want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere on that if the reliability isn’t up to Japanese standards. All have their pros and cons.
To be honest the spoke wheels is just another thing you have to look at every month to make sure they are all tight. I prefer the cast wheels on mine as I don’t spend much time at all off road. I have crf for that.
I agree and the spokes are a pain to clean although they look cool. I fancy a CRF 250L or Rally for a lightweight fun bike. What CRF have you got?
Triple B I got the rally. It’s like a mini adventure bike that has the capability of touring. I put on a bigger screen, some prober hand guards, heated grips and a concept seat and what a difference. To be honest I ride it more than Vstrom due to its light weight and enjoyment of it needing more of my input to make it go. Makes the Vstrom feel extremely luxurious.

The tank range made me buy the 650xt
Really the fuel consumption in this video is not typical, it nearly put me off buying one too. I have a 2017 1000 and it regularly hits 60 MPG plus. Great review but this is the only aspect where it does not fit with my experience of over 5,500 miles, so that's is a much more realistic mileage upon which to base a fuel consumption figure, not the small mileage covered by tipple B . If you just look at around town figures you get an un realistic figure, check out the web site Fuely

It's so funny how Canadians and Brits both use a mixture of metric and standard, but in completely different ways.
For instance, I use litres/100km for fuel consumption, never mpg, but for seat height I would use inches, never mm.
Haha yep, then throw in that I mix up british and Americanisms like petrol/gas and you’ve got complete confusion 😁
How many cylinder is that bike?
It's 2 cylinders. When we say a twin that means 2 cylinders, a triple is 3 etc.

Hi George. I sold mine just before lock down. Not through choice but had to free up some cash. I was really happy with the bike. If I had to buy again though I think I'd opt for the 650 as it does everything the 1000 did. Not quite as good brakes and power but still good enough and it's finitely better on fuel. I guess it depends on the price difference between the two as to which one to go for.
@@TripleB6036 thanks for the info. Getting £1400 off the retail price more so cause it's a 2019 unregistered so will show as a 20 plate. I've currently got the z1000sx so concerned about dropping the power that I'm used too.
@@scoobysyme I can't remember the retail price but know I paid £7995 for mine in January which I thought was a great deal. It will be down on power compared to your Z1000SX but still plenty of torque. I'm waiting to finalise a deal on my new bikes. I've gone for lightweight and fun this time. ZX6R and a Duke 890R.
How big is the difference in fuel?

I have bought the Standard v strom 650 instead of the 1000 of 1050 for several reasons:
Fiel economy
The price. There was not such good Deals on the 1000 any more. The 1050 is much more expensive.
The seat hight of the 650 is the maximum for my shorter legs to feel comfortable.
The 650 is lighter.
I do like the more classic dash of the 650.
The suspension is really good for bumpy roads.
The V Strom 1000 is certainly a good bike. So have fun on your 1000.
For my personal needs the 650 is the better choice.
Is there any point in the 1000 for a 20m daily commute if the 650 is 75% of the power ? Whats the avg mpg for the 1000 . You must be close . I am in Leigh
No. Get the 650
After buying and riding three new ‘Stroms (‘09, ‘12, ‘15 - cumulatively over 200 000 Kilometers) I was waiting for the new 1050. But, relative to similarly priced bikes, it disappointed. So, I’m now considering buying a holdover ‘18 or ‘19 model - there’s plenty around. But here’s the rub, there’s also plenty of holdover Africa Twins and Tigers around not to mention fully farkled barely used ‘Stroms that can’t be sold because of heavily discounted “new” V-Stroms. I guess very market-location pivots on its own facts, but aside from hubris, I’m starting to question the sense of buying a newly released model from any manufacturer.
I can see where you're coming from although some new models could tempt me when there is a significant change ie 2020 Fireblade.. But yep that's why I cancelled my pre order and went with the 2019 version but brand new. Saved about £3-4000 and I bet if I do want a 2020 model I can pick one up next year for a bargain. We'll the Africa twins are a bargain at the moment because the new model is supposedly a significant upgrade. I've never rode an Africa twin so can't really compare but as I barely go off road it's probably a bit overkill for me. I love the look of them though. Tigers by all accounts are top heavy so I'd probably give them a miss.
Triple B I’ve ridden them all, and my problem is I like ‘em all. The Tiger, AT, Baby GS and ‘Strom, among may others, share similarities and differences. Thing is, I like the similarities and differences! What I find (after fifty years of riding long and hard) is that I can actually afford to ride more and further if I don’t buy new. I used to think I’d sell them all and get the one best (IE: most expensive) all-rounder I could buy. But that’s an illusion; no one bike allows me to enjoy - you guessed it - the similarities and differences between the bikes I own.

That's probably why I'm sat at my desk now with 4 different cameras here and a couple of bikes in the garage. That's good to hear Pete. MPG isn't a big concern for me as the bikes are my hobby but the more miles on a tank the better.
My bike was about 2000 miles before it got better on fuel, get over 50 mpg now
The only drawback of.the Vstrom 1000 is the lack of ABS switch tu turn off the Abs and the lack of cruise control.

Yes. Bought early 2020 it was a 2019 pre registered model so I got a good deal.
Where did you get the idea it requires premium fuel? It doesn't!
Depends what you class as premium fuel. It's different in different countries. Straight from the manual. It says and I quote 'use premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 95 or higher'.
I would think the 650 is perfect for the Philippines. Not sure you can buy a 1050 there .. It would be an overkill in philippines. 😂
I’ve been told the 1050 is available there now but you’re right, It’s definitely overkill. Getting that on and off RoRo ferries would not be fun. I’m probably just going to get a CRF250 or the Rally when I’m back as it makes more sense where I will be.

Yes it did. Stated it in the manual. But ‘premium’ depends where in the world you are and what is called premium there. Some places call premium anything above 91 Octane.
@@TripleB6036 no it doesnt. V-strom is not picky about the fuel. I know what the manual says, but i also know what the case is in real life.

@@TripleB6036 no, what actually works is what is required. And the V-strom is well known for not beeing picky when it comes to fuel. Will premium fuel work best? -of course, but its not required. Will lower octane damage the bike? -no, and it works.
I would have used premium fuel anyway!
