  • It's been 4 years since I bought the Vstrom1000, and it's time for an in-depth owners review - warts and all. Will I continue with this popular commuter, sports-touring/adventure bike, or is it time to move on?

First off I would like to say I have watched 100's of video reviews on this bike and yours sir is by FAR the best I've seen to date. Thank you!
I purchased the 2019 Suzuki Vstrom 1000XT in March of this year. I absolutely love the bike but I only have 3850 miles on her so far. It is great to hear my decision to purchase was a good one and can look forward to many more trouble free miles. Thanks again, you sir, have earned yourself another subscriber.

@@lubricantrc3244 650 would be a great choice, especially if you will be traveling light and not carrying a passenger. The Vstrom is known to be one the most reliable adventure bikes on the market.

@@lubricantrc3244 Had a 650 before the 1000. Loved it, and toured the states 2 up on it several times. Steep grades 2 up, 50lbs of luggage and passing on short straits required thought, gear changes and planning, bit it's totally doable. As a solo bike, it's all you need.

I have the 2014 Vstrom 1000 that I bought at the end of 2017. It was new in a box for $10,000 CDN out the door. I just went over 40,000km and love the bike. It carves the twisties amazingly and is incredibly comfortable for 1000km days. Nothing but oil changes and tires. It is an under rated motorcycle for sure

Great review, bought a 2016 model back in May after a test ride. I fell in love with it straight away, it only had 200 miles on the clock and I got it at a good price. Every time I ride it, it puts a smile on my face with its wave of torque. at 5' 10" it just fits me like a glove. It holds the road and is very sure footed. I just love this bike.

Great review, i'm from Greece and i owned a 2004 v-strom with almost 160.000 Km (100.000 miles) in mixed conditions (city-highway), except from the things you need to change by the book i haven't touch anything, even the valves are checked regularly but never had to adjust it, i love cornering on twisty mountain roads and with this bike i have the fun of my life, i had change the foot pegs twice because of the touch from the tarmac nothing was left... Service very easy and cheap but mostly i do it myself...

Awesome, one of the most extensive and easy to listen to reviews. Suzuki’s are the best value bang for your buck out there not only to purchase but to own, and you are correct, the most underrated. I started on T 350 in 1975 and ended up on a Hayabusa 40 years later - with a couple of other bikes in between. I now have to find some money for a VStrom! Thank you. Subscribed.

I bought my brand new 2015 late in 2016, had a concussion in 2017 and barely rode it... In the following two years I've got it up to 70,000km. I ride a solid mix of twisties, highway, and dirt roads, even the odd trundle down a trail. It's not a dual sport, and I'm not a dual sport rider, but it's always felt perfectly comfortable with whatever I've thrown at it!
Maintenance wise nothing has failed on me, just routine service and consumables. The ignition cylinder did need to be disassembled once because of a metal burr getting stuck in the tumbler. I've broken a footpeg bracket when it took a nap on a trail, bent the stock handlebar trying to pick it up when it napped on a soft shoulder, and I busted the rear brake bracket by being stupid when reassembling the caliper.
Also, a note on the spark plugs... Iridium plugs last a helluva lot longer than the service interval suggests. I took mine to 68,000km and they only had minor wear. Most cars with these plugs have an interval of more than 150,000km so changing them even at 25,000km is a waste.

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Really enjoyed your review. I totally agree on your idea/opinion on the vstrom. I own a 1st gen 2006 1000cc. I find the sneering from other riders funny as we do the same in as them in as much comfort and for less money. I love mine and can't wait to get out after the virus. The reason fo watching your video is because I keep coming back to the idea of a 2nd gen for my next purchase. Thanks and I have subscribed.

I had a question regarding the windscreen adjustment mechanism of the 2014-2019 DL-1000 models. Essentially, in their 2020 model, they changed it from being easily adjustable on the fly, to having to come to a stop to do it. I was wondering if during your owner ship of this bike, you faced any mechanical problems that might have developed with the windshield adjustment mechanism. Thank you.

Great review! I had a 2005 V-Strom 1000 and now have the 2014 version. I bought the second generation just because I loved the first so much. And it's even better than I expected. Plus I get the TC, ABS and heated grips. I love the bike and use it for commuting to work, day trips, holidays and even small grocery shopping. I average about 16,500 km per season. All I do is put petrol in and service it regularly. The only annoyance is a loud front sprocket under acceleration that the Suzuki say is "normal". It sounds like the chain is rusty or not lubed, which of course, is not the case. Otherwise the bike is amazing! You may guess what my next bike will be... ;-)

Thankyou Blue for your great review, after my best friend had put on 330.000 kms on his 04 650,i bought an 09 which i drove to Argentina, only issue was the spring relay switch 2 dollar fix hahha .i sold sunset in Chile and bought a 14 black ,Yes the windhield has to be replaced or you will go deaf ,and Givi like you said is the wind whisperer.just a warning when you remove your side bags becarefull not to loose the rubber mounts like me,you cant order them from Suzuki,so i had a friend custom make one ,now i glue them on.
You really look after your motto, for me im covering a clear wrap on the tank to protect from scratches being black..my only wish would be for a bigger fuel tank, especially for adventure driving.as you have seen Suzuki now has its new 1050 same engine ,5 hp more, and more tracken control that i dont care for ,but fuel tank isnt bigger ,so i will keep my 14 and look down the road for Aventure, thankyou again safe riding.

I had a 2008 model (1st Gen) that I had to sell several months back because I was up to 3 running bikes with a brand new Moto Guzzi Stelvio I bought due to a screamin' deal they had on them.
V-Strom have truly "bulletproof" engines and since their engine doesn't really vibrate, other than pegs/foot levers, there is really not much need to frequently check and tighten nuts/bolts on them.
If you are 6' or taller, look into getting the foot peg/lever lowering kit which makes night and day difference on the ergonomics for taller riders. At least, that was the case with the 1st Gen VStroms.
VStrom is a very agile, reliable and fun to ride. A great "all purpose" bike that I'd recommend to any type of rider!
Ride safely and thanks for the upload!

Huh just like me, I have 3 bikes. Hayabusa turbo, SV650 and the Vstrom 650 And my go to bike is the Vstrom. As you said very under rated. It will do 98% of everything that I will ever do one a bike. The Busa takes care of the other 2%

Very tempted by one of these. I have to admit the Z900 line calls me too, but I think this would suit me better if I truly think about my riding style and the things I prefer. Your review was very helpful in that case.

Hi , Racer, If I were to scale back to one bike, then the others would go and the Strom would be the last one in the garage: it's not sexy, fashionable and you may recieve withering looks from the KTM/BMW crowd, but it offers the most variety, is cheap to run, reliable, and fun to ride. Thanks for the feedback.

Fantastic review of this motorcycle. Before I switched to ADV bikes, I had an eye on the V-Strom. I have talked to many owners an not one was dissatisfied with the bike.
Being a Suzuki owner in the past and being extremely happy with my bike, shouldve been the bike I bought, but no,
    bought a BMW GSA 1250.
With 8500 kms on it, 3 factory recalls and some other issues that should never show up on an over 30K bike, not good.
My son however has mentioned he wants a V-Strom. I am so pleased to hear this and will send him this review. Thanks and well done.

Really concise, informative review with enough mileage to speak to its virtually maintenance free ownership. Thank you for reiterating what we owners know and a great testimony to anyone thinking on getting a Vstrom. They are called the common man's adventure bike with a low price point, easy customization to the owners likes and the dependability to trust it to go anywhere. I have my purchased new 2014 black V and I could not be happier with it. I continue to add small things for my personal comfort and use but it really does not need anything to just walk out, get on it and head out to chase the horizon. I am retired now so it suits me perfectly to get on and go...after the honey dos are done naturally! ^^Ok, YES, you will probably NEED either a new wind screen OR a top deflector on it to avoid a mind rattling ride! The regular and touring windsceens are TOO LOW and you get serious buffeting, generally. My wife bought me a Givi Airflow and it works great with NO buffeting with a wide range of adjustment. But just a deflector will do the trick!!! I'm here in the MidAtlantic/Wash DC, ride all year, and hope to see yall out there! Be safe my friends!!!

I feel like you made this video for me! I have the exact same Vstrom, bought it heavily discounted in 2016. I currently have 21k miles, and ride every day to work. I couldn’t agree more to all your points - especially your point about how it handles in the twisters. I don’t know what it is but this bike devours curves and leaves more capable bikes behind. It’s never broken down. It’s always taken care of me. I also own an 02 GSXR 1000, a 15 1290 Super Duke, and an 18 Yamaha WR450f. I’ve said before that I’d ditch all of them before I got rid of my VStrom. It’s fantastic! Great review!

My question is the duke in rain mode is limited to 100hp how does the v strom compare with its max of 100hp? Also hows the braking compared to our ktms?

Thanks for your superb review. Just subscribed. Bought a 2019 V Strom 1000 earlier this month. Haven't ridden her yet amidst our Winter here in Ottawa, Canada. Crazy eager for spring. Moving to my V Strom from a 805cc Suzuki M50 Boulevard that I picked up last July after being away motorcycles for about 25 years. Loved it but wanted a more capable bike. Initially was inclined to look at big displacement baggers but started to pay more attention to ADV bikes. The look of ADV bikes definitely had to grow on me. Eventually the idea of their capability displaced my earlier ideas of cool/style. Not looking to go truly off-road but recognise my cruiser wasn't a fun ride as soon as the asphalt was in poor repair, which is par for the course riding many of our more rural and more northern roads. I'd looked at ADV offerings of bmw, KTM, triumph, ducati, honda, and yamaha. Bigger price tags. I'm never immune to spending money I don't really have. Can justify a lot of purchase decisions under the "life is short" axiom. Nevertheless, kept coming back to the V Strom. Perhaps meant to be. This remaining new 2019 in the inventory of my nearest shop and the legacy 5 year warranty plus she was my preferred color (black and grey) was a purchase tipping point. Added crash bars atvtime of purchase. Have yet to decide on skid plate or luggage but will get it figured out in due course. Cheersband thanks again.

Really happy for you, Robert. Of course, I'm biased, but, for me, the value for money, comfort and reliability are far and away more important than the brand cache a BMW or KTM will bring me. Besides, after a few years with the bike, I enjoy her lines. Hope the snow thaws soon; otherwise, consider a move to wet coast ;-) Cheers. BMR.

Excellent review of this machine. Thank you for the lack of annoying music and swearing. I sold my KTM 300 this last summer, at age 64 riding single track in western Colorado was becoming more of a risk than I could harbor. I purchased a friend's street touring bike to see if I would still enjoy road bikes as I had not ridden on the road much in 14 years. I have enjoyed it, the only negative being the discovery of a paved road turning to gravel or a wonderful forest road short cut that I was not going to tackle with a '99 BMW K1200LT. The V-Strom hadn't really appeared on my radar, but I've changed that since viewing your long term video. I enjoy solo riding and nature, so the V-Strom could very well fill the ticket. Thank you.

Watched videos here with initial info and plan to buy one as soon as they arrive in the stores. An XT with luggage etc. Riding a 2018 SV650 now and want to add a bike for longer tours. Just took a look at the EICMA views of the 2020 vstrom 1050. Looks good, in that it is essentially an evolution not a revolution - same engine, same frame, same suspension, with updated and more extensive electoronics (cruise, sirs etc). A little heavier, hence slightly more ponies (110hp I hear...)

I made my trip alone to Alps in August and the bike was just spot on. I miss a tempomat and maybe a few more horses like 110 would be nice. Thanks, SR: looking forward to 2020. Yes I'm pretty meticulous about the bikes, but the strom only gets a wash three times a year. I wish I could say there was some sort of miracle, but its turtle wax wash & wax combo, ride for 20 mins to blow the water out of the bearings etc, and chamois. Maybe a vid in the spring on that!
