      I have to say, I feel the original designs are better on these lot.... the flame on your Spice doesn't look right, the orange shape is lost in the second logo and the Vault logo looks like it's for a security system. IMO the last logo was already perfectly fitting for a street wear brand and the letters 'V' & 'A' almost act as arrows pointing up and down showing it's a parkour/freerunning type brand.

    Nice video, good critiques! Although I'm not too sure about the vault logo. You said that it was meant to be a street wear brand, that brings the idea close that "vault" should not mean "safe" but rather "leap" or "jump". And in that scenario I'd actually prefer the OG version because the "VA" could be seen as directional indicators. To think this further it even follows the motion path of a jumping person: first down into the knees - then up.
    Keep it up 💯

    I do have to say that I personally don't like either of redesigns completely. Yeah, the typography is better and fonts all in all look cleaner but my biggest problems are with the communication aspects of it. Spice looks like a candle company, groovy orange is neither an orange, nor groovy, and vault is generic to the bone. Think the keyhole is like the first idea a standard brand manager who has no idea about graphic design comes up with and sticks to it no matter what - not saying that's a bad thing, but the original logo had a bit bolder stance and didn't fall into the boomer category. Anywho, love your content, there is no perfect designs, and a bit of criticism has to be involved or we all become super inflated ego maniacs. Cheers!

      I think this is more of an issue in the naming of the brand rather than the interpretation of the logo. When you're naming a company, you have to consider all of the interpretations so as to not confuse the end user. Confusion is a brands worst nightmare. Confusion causes friction, and friction causes lack of connection.

    Groovy Orange - Ultra minimal while making the G and orange integrate in the logo. Apparently that was too much so I'm going to make a plain geometric G that's better. (Also practically the same "g" as Logitech uses)
    VAULT - A bit too minimalist and should integrate more to make it appear interesting. Making some connections to a literal vault kinda forgetting that it is a clothing brand.
    I still like your videos and the advise you give. I feel like it really helps people that might be stuck in their designs, but stick to your preferences. Yeah every logo can be changed and altered, and you do respect the designer's work, but if it fits all of the things you like then there's no need to change it. Saying this is a good logo and I wouldn't change anything speaks a lot more as a professional KNOWING a design fulfills what it's suppose to do. Verses not seeing that and changing it anyways because you feel like you could do better.
    Hope you see this a constructed criticism, keep up the dream.

  • @aarond9563
    @aarond9563 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think what this is missing is context. This isn't baad if we're talking about graphic design principles alone, but I think if we're talking about commercial logo making then I don't think it's hitting the right markers. The groovy orange logo although an improvement in terms of readability is anything but groovy. Imo it's much too geometric and stark. As for VAULT, if it's a streetwear brand I feel like they're probably referencing vault as in the skateboarding term rather than a place to store money. But even if they're not I think what this series is missing is context in terms of what the company is and what is stands for. Someone who I feel like did this really well was Zimri Mayfield back in the day. He had people send in briefs about the company and using that explanation he would redesign their logo. It was about graphic design principles, but even moreso it was about brand imaging and marketing.

    The fact that you created these in bare minutes is absolutely amazing. 🔥Yet, I'm a bit bothered by the usage of a lock as a negative space for the "Vault" logo while in the "spice logo" for some reason, you said it was not the best to use the flame in the the P - it's the same prinicpal and the I does look like a candle in the new "spice logo.. Also, if one zooms out the new "vault" logo same happens (disappears) as does the OG spice logo.. So just a little bit confused there and would appreciate your elaborated thoughts here.
    Nevertheless, great content, I still learn so much from these!

    • @willpatersondesign
      @willpatersondesign  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! The difference in my mind (within those few minutes) between the P and and A is the colour of type. If it has more colour (positive space) and if it's balanced it would work better - so the A kind of worked well for the lock. :) Hope that answers your question and thanks for watching

    I really dig the groove one, Spice could work also with just the icon a little bit bigger so you can use just the icon in different colors in bottles with different spicies, Vault I disagree, because is a streetwear brand it works way more in this abstract v upwards type of logo, it's not about preference, I think it speaks way more as a street brand logo and would looked absolutely amazing on some clothing photos.

    I liked the enhancement for first two, but differently I am totally disagree in the VAULT logo redesign, the new logo has been seen a-lot, the small shape in the over size font is lose-lose strategy in designing logos, to be honest always try to avoid using the extra bold font unless you have a readable letters in smaller size such like H, L, T and in general any shape of letter which only have a square shape. Thank you WillP.

    Hello sir
    Which app is used to design logos?

  • @crazymanwithaplunger

    Realise I'm late to the game on this one, but if I'm being honest I prefer the original designs on all 3 of them.
    Spice - I know you said you didn't want it to look like a candle - but as soon as you made that change it's all I could see. Fine if it's a candle company, but otherwise it sends the wrong message. The original placement in the P made me think spicy food of some sort - basically it communicated heat and spice more generally than just a candle, which made me think flame only, not heat or spicy-ness. I did prefer your font choice though. Definitely think a wider typeface is better.
    groovy orange - again I preferred the originals look with that graphic. The O was clearer and the shape for the g below I just have a general preference for. Personally I would have angled it slightly, and for the serrif you added to the top, I'd have made it look like a small leaf to emphasise the graphic of an orange. But that's me.
    Vault - the key hole I think could work but not in the A. Looked a bit cartoony for me and definitely didn't communicate it as a streetwear brand. I think using it to create the U would have been a better option, but otherwise the original without any graphical element at all was still great I thought.
    In saying all that, design is highly subjective too and I realise these are just the minor opinions of some schlub on the internet.

    I think all logos looked better before.
    Edit : except for the "spice" one, the flame symbol is more visible and evocative so that's good.
    What I think is wrong with the other twos is :
    The orange stuff logo, the stick you added to the shape is too harsh compared to the roundness of the circles. Also I think it doesn't mean anything, it is not clear if it's a letter or the symbol of something. Not clear.
    The third one : Its just that I like the first version really much. I agree with the others

    SPICE - for me you redesign actually makes no sense.
    When you put the flame above the "I" it looks like a candle.
    EDIT: I commented that few seconds before you told "we don't want it to look like a candle too much".
    The case is: it does.

      lol, a lot of people within the comments seem to assume that I have to know every single logo that's ever been made. To me, it looked more like the Logitech logo. I didn't even know who Gousto were. Thanks for watching.

    your spice and vault redesign is not an upgrade, what you are doing is just showing other options than what the first designer did.
