    Holy crap... Thank you for pointing out the magnet (for the camshaft sensor), I'm putting together a 3800 with a double row timing chain & I forgot to take that off the original (single cam gear).
    Thanks for saving me a mountain of grief (my motor is still on the stand at the mo...).

    I was a big 3800 guy when I was a kid…but then I grew up. Are people really still modding these engines bragging about 400 whp? Just get a junkyard LS and throw it in some dirtball Camaro, turbo it, make 800 wheel and grow up. Props to ZZP for staying true to themselves and not taking the easy way out.

    I found when using studs in these engines, the studs grow when warm and you loose tension on them. I could never get the gaskets to hold big boost until I retorqued them when the engine was at operating temp. Not sure if you guys found the same? Talking 1000hp/turbo stuff.

      @@600zxr, apparently if you use top notch vavle train components, titanium springs, roller rockers, a high lift cam, bigger injectors, larger fuel pump, custom throttle body, cold air intake, custom ECM, (I'm sure your getting it), then the bottom end of these 3800 will take the power (for a while, your mileage may very). You may want to poke around your local strip to see what the local mad scientist's are doing with their dependable 3800's.

      The desired results are even better when the dot on the cam gear is at 6 o’clock and the crank gear dot is at 12 o’clock. No point in wasting time to determine if those times are pm or am. A quick look outside will usually help with that little detail 🥳.

    • @danielwilson6665
      @danielwilson6665 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately that’s the situation with these engines if they aren’t maintained with reasonable oil changes or when they are high mileage survivors. The leaks, if any externally aren’t the problem. When internal bearing clearances are worn excessively, a new oil pump won’t help much if at all. Your noisy hydraulic lifters that rely on reasonable oil pressure for proper operation are telling you the bad news. An engine rebuild using quality components will restore the oil pressure along with some performance as well.

    I know this is a old post. But I am wondering if you or any viewers can give me some advice on the crank gear position. There is about three positions it can fit on the crank and I presume it is each a 2 deg change to the crank Cam timing as a result ?. If there is a possibility that when reassembly was undertaken, that the gear may have been put on the wrong location, what could be the result with the engine when running?
    As I am wondering if a lack of power, economy from what should be around 7-8L/100km is now running more around the 12-14L/100km highway. Would there be any other noticeable issues?
    Without removing the front assembly to view the timing gears is there a way to check the cam and crank timing somehow?
