It's a nice video - a region I'm familiar with but not in the time of day I was ever there. Something else: have you ever travelled on the Nishikigawa Railway (near Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture)? I recently discovered it via one of the very few cab videos from there, and I would very much appreciate a travel report showing more than the view ahead, which you excel in.
Very cool to see it from an outsider's perspective. Traveling around that region from time to time. Both train stations are really super busy during the day, as they are major hubs for switching trains. You were lucky to have such short delay. Usually you can often add +15 or +30 minutes when traveling during the day.
That train line is always super busy! But for why people might be taking a train at that particular time, I think the most likely is that it's easier to get cheaper tickets for those very late trains. Also, the train arrives in Hamburg early in the morning, perfect for a weekend trip or similar. It also makes it easy to use other trains, maybe towards Scandinavia. Lastly, maybe people went to a concert or similar event that ran until late and night and needed to take the train after 🙂 I live not too far from Stockholm now, but every time I stay late and need to catch the last train home, it's always very busy. It seems people stay out late if they get the chance to!
I have already used a number of ICE overnight. For certain dates or train tours, these connections are simply very good. Sleeping is difficult or possible with practice, but sometimes it's quite good. There is something magical about seeing the first rays of sunshine on a summer morning at a speed of 230 km/h 😊.
I ♥ Düsseldorf! P.S. To the trains: The ICE is not arriving in Hamburg on the next morning but on the same day 😉! So the train is full - at least partly - due to the fact, that this train will arrive at the early business hours in Hamburg! Some passengers on this train may have arrived at Cologne Airport via low cost carriers (no night curfew there!) and are now heading home or other passengers may be travelling to Düsseldorf Airport to arrive on time for the many early departures there starting at 06:00 am!
@@Bianca_Toeps He's not in Japan. If you broadcast to an international audience you need to be aware of correct terminologies, especially in the English language.
Wow that's a surprise. I lived in cologne until last month! The cathedral is actually not lit at night right now to save energy. Hope you had a fun time.
I think the most common reasons for taking the train so late are: - If you're busy in a city and can't leave sooner, it may make sense. For example, if you are at a concert until 9 p.m., then take the train at 10 p.m. and you are at home by 3 a.m. In this way you could save the money for a hotel. If I can sleep off the next day, I prefer that - Depending on where you start and where you want to go, a trip can take a long time. If you cannot leave before evening, you will arrive very late. On Friday evenings after work I like to take the train. Because then I'm very tired. So you don't mind sitting and watching videos. If I can check in at my hotel by midnight, I can start my vacation the very next day - Many sleeper trains have been dropped and replaced with normal trains - Train tickets for night journeys are often super cheap
Another reason quite a few people use these very late / very early train services is because they are much cheaper if you book in advance. Example: A standard one way trip from Munich to Hamburg is around 100 - 150 €. If you book in advance, you can get is as cheap as 17,90€.
Great to see you visiting Cologne. It's a city of history, diversity and nice people. Hope you could stay for more than 10 minutes on your next journey!
I can try to answer your question about why so many people take the train at night: Since many of these people had suitcases with them, I suspect they wanted to catch a very early flight at Hamburg airport or have some business to attend to. The ICE 920 (the train you took) is the earliest train you can take (without connecting trains) to get to Hamburg Central Station. From there they would take an S-Bahn to the airport. By the way, the PRX trains run 24/7, which is pretty awesome. As fast as the ICE is, there aren't really many high-speed lines on the route between Cologne and Düsseldorf or almost the entire infrastructure in the Ruhr area, because you have to stop too often. During the day, the entire network is pretty heavily loaded, so it's just not worth it to go faster than 200 or 160 km/h.
I am quite sure that none of the passengers on this ICE is going to take an early morning flight from HAM!? I don't think HAM offers any destination you could not reach from DUS or - to a lesser extent - even from CGN! And even FRA-Airport would be much easier and faster to be reached!?
@@Travelagent My guess is that there a few low cost carriers operating at HAM. DUS, CGN and FRA might be too expensive for some carriers when the priority is a low price
@@Travelagent Oh I didn't know that CGN also had low cost carriers, my bad. A few of my family members had to get to HAM early in the morning to get the cheapest flight to Turkey and took the 920.
Thank you for making this little trip in the very early hours of the morning. As I understand it, some travelers like to sleep on the train at night and go from city to city for sightseeing in the daytime. It can save you on hotel expenses. Ummm!
Thanks for the mid-night report! You are really a rail enthusiast, for which I admire very much! Take care of yourself and I look forward to seeing more fantastic journeys from you! Enjoy your stay in Europe!
Thanks for posting, Kuga, I always enjoy following you on your trips. Very happy that I was finally able to return to Japan earlier this year after the dreaded pandemic kept me away from my second home for so long!
Hi Kuga, love watching your videos, btw. this was a refurbished 1st Generation ICE, they are in service since the early 90s. As for why we travel during the night: “Der frühe Vogel fängt den Wurm!” “The early bird catches the worm!”, but as a German I can say I am used to travel at each day/night time.
The first train (RE-1) was a regional-express train of the Rhine-Ruhr Express (RRX) network, operated by National Express (a British company). The train itself was a Siemens Desiro HC, a high capacity version of the Desiro family, with max speeds of 160Km/h.
Thanks Ambassador! A nice midnight trip in my hood but for the real experience you have to ride the S-Bahn during night ^^. You will see how many people are commuting from partys back home or maybe to the after party lol. Some of them will be friendly and funny some maybe rude but thats the night lifestyle. Hi, the lights that illuminates the cologne cathedral als turned off at night due to the high energy costs at the moment. Because the cost for energy here in Germany are now so expensive at the moment. Normal customers payed in 2020 about 0,33€/kwh, and now it´s 0,50€/kwh and above. So they are turned off at night. The ICE (bullet train) is often crowded at night. You took the videos on Sunday to Monday (Aug 22, 2022), right? Many people are traveling over the weekend between Cologne and Düsseldorf within their long-distance relationship or something like that. They go back home on Sunday night by train, to be right on time for work the next morning. Or they als working perhaps in Hamburg (Mo-Fr) und still living in Cologne at the weekend. So they come on Fridays at home and leave for work at Sundays. Cologne ist one of the most impressive city in Germany and Europe, because of the very, very open mindset of the locals here (ok, all Düsseldorf´er people hates me now, but thats a special funny cultural thing between Cologne and Düsseldorf since the mid-age, you can google it). Not without reasons, is Cologne one of the hotspots for the movie an the TV industry. But the most people who moved to cologne and are living and working here (they´re affectionately called „imi“ = „enne imiteete Kölsche“, I can´t explain that in only a few words, please google it), they´ll tell you the same. I was born in cologne, I´m living here. I studied abroad, and worked for years in Düsseldorf, and traveled between Cologne and Düsseldorf. Once you are rooted here, you´ll not leave. Perhaps you can it compare with Munich, the „Oktoberfest“/ „Wiesn“, but it´s not really the same. If you´re next time in Germany, especially in Düsseldorf, try to take a view on the hole region. It´s hard too find such a varaity of different mindsets or menthalites within a distance from only 50-60km. That would be outstanding in the world. Stay a weekend in Cologne, take some vids, you don´t regret it. Did you have in Japan such differences in the regions too? Greet´s from Cologne
Hi Kuga, thank you for travelling Deutsche Bahn 😄 Have you ever been in one of the newest ICE, where you are able to sit directly behind the.. cockpit? You are able to take a glimpse out to the front there, I think you would like it. And, on the way from Nürnberg to Berlin, the ICE I was sitting in, speeds up nearly 300 km/h
The ICE you described with the glass partition is ICE 3, which isn't the newest trainset. It has been in operations since 1999 with extensive renovations from 2017 and 2020, which probably gave you the impression of "newest" appearance. For anyone who wants to know more: the 300 km/h travel is only possible with ICE 3 Sprinter, which runs twice a day between Munich and Berlin. You can see the logo similar to "s>" next to the ICE number which is always 100x (1001, 1002, 1003, etc. Northbound is even number, southbound odd number). Mostly, ICE 4 trains are used for this route and could reach between 250 and 265 km/h, depending on the number of carriages.
Both trains you took looked very comfortable to ride on. You took an overnight train and you said they would never happen in Japan. It's up because the trains don't overnight? How was your experience riding the trains overnight. I love the video I hope you had a good time in Europe. I hope your wallet didn't cry too much all over Europe but that is a good time to do it when you're young. Can't wait for the next video
Your job as the spokesmen for overnight trains is going to be amazing once the China/Europe high speed rail line is built in the next decade. High-speed sleeper trains from anywhere in Europe top anywhere in asia
Düsseldorf has one of the largest communities of japanese ex-pats in Germany. I sometimes travel there for business, and consider eating out a small treat. I hope you liked it!
Thank you for sharing all of these different trains, it's very nice to see them all! I have a question: Have you ever taken the DMV, or Dual Mode Vehicle, on the Asa Coast Railway in Shikoku, Japan? If not, would you consider doing so? I saw another video with it but they don't do as nice a job as you do. Thanks!
It’s only roughly 30 minutes by the high speed train, done it quite a few times but mainly by regional express as if you get the 7 day ticket you’ve access to all regional trains unlimited plus the trams and some buses well worth buying it if you want to explore the region you’re staying in
I think smth I haven't seen my fellow germans comment on yet is that the train Kuga was on earlier stopped at Frankfurt Airport. Since he was there in summer, it could be possible there's also passengers who landed late in Frankfurt & are now on their way home, or as others said off to a trip north to Hamburg/connecting scandinavia trips.
❤ to you Kuga,. Night train tickets are much cheaper at night esp ICE (standard class). Also there are a lot of genuine night trains moving across Europe throughout the night perhaps its to hook up with them
Perhaps many people need to catch a flight at DUS and use the ICE for a part of the journey. Or arrived at FRA or CGN and are going home. Also less crowded and cheaper than a day train. And perhaps some of them went to a concert or something similar. Btw the Rhein-Ruhr agglomeration has more than 10 million people so there is always demand.
Tickets for trains during the night are often a lot cheaper! So I guess that if you don’t want to spend a lot of money you take a late train like this one. If you book in advance there is no need for it though because tickets are getting more expensive to closer you get to the actual travel date.
technically just normal trains, there used to be more (none ICE) back then - you could basically travel nonstop with trains around germany. the real night trains with sleeping options are run by the austrian company ÖBB Nightjet within germany nowadays
It always surprised me that in Japan the last train is so early. Of course, there needs to be maintenance and the first train is usually at 5:something, but still. But I guess it would become a Shibuya Meltdown Extravaganza in those late trains, and dangerous on the platforms too...
I will be taking a night ICE from Hamburg to Frankfurt Airport, more comfortable compared to cattle class flight. Leaves Hamburg just before 23:00, arrives at just before 07:00 for flight at 11:00. Was a no-brainer for me.
7:29 at first it is cheeper. The 9€ ticket was an idea of the government without any agreement with the companies, which then led to problems in all rail traffic. Add to that Covid and lack of staff and the chaos was almost perfect.
German trains replace a lot of internal flights. The ICE would have had passengers arriving at Frankfurt-am-Main airport on intercontinental flights. They will then be continuing their journey to German cities along the route to Hamburg Hbf. It's the norm in Germany for trains to provide a 24/7 service.
Hello, I like your videos and I'd really recommend you to sometime take the ICE 3 train (train variant capable of 300km/h) from Köln to Frankfurt. This line operates at 300km/h and only ICE trains are allowed on it, making it less prone to delays compared to other lines, where ICE trains share the rails with regional trains. It's a really unique experience compared to many other ICE lines with great changes in elevation and good scenery. I'd recommend you to for example take an ICE Sprinter (Sprinter trains don't stop at every station, just the major ones) like the ICE 11 from Köln Hbf until Frankfurt Hbf.
Koln is a GREAT city. I did that journey at the end of 2021, but on Flixtrain. It cost me €3 one-way, and all I had to do was book a day in advance via the app, which was outstanding value. On the return I took the RXX as there was no suitable Flix to suit my time, but that only cost me €9 inc. local transport transfer either end for that journey. Flixtrain might be a bit uncomfortable for longer trips but for that short journey it was absolutely fine, and the RXX trains are realllly nice too. Wouldnt mind taking the ICE 1 before they retire them! Did you go to Bonn aswell? It's a very nice city, and there's loads of trainspotting opportunities at the level crossings between the quiet leafy streets.
You rode on a 30 year old train, which appears to stop every 50 kilometers or so, it was a wonder that it reached a speed of 200 km/h. It's slightly hypocritical to complain about night riders, don't you think? 😂 This train was coming from Frankfurt Airport, so it makes totally sense for the route to Hamburg at this time. Anyways, love your channel, thanks!
I last took the ICE (just last month) from München to Nürnberg and vice-versa. Both of them ran horribly late. We also took a regional train from Regensburg to München and we were rerouted into multiple train + bus rides because of some technical rail issues along the way, making a supposedly 1-hour trip into a chaotic 4+ hour claustrophobic journey. As much as I enjoyed Germany, the trains left much to be desired. Such a disappointment for a nation that prides itself in punctuality and advanced infrastructure.
You really love trains to ride them this time in the morning to go to one city and then back to where you started :) Tell me have you ever missed a train when your out shooting video as I would be worried as you heard over the announcement Please Board the Train as she was saying this the train was already moving away :)
I bet Cologne cathedral will be great when it's finished in 2510 🤔sorry I couldn't resist. I always wonder how place names are translated in to English, I mean how did Koln become Cologne? Baring in mind there is a city in England called Colne which is pronounced exactly the same way as Koln!
To my knowledge, it was called Colonia during the time of the Roman Empire, and evolved into Köln in modern German. Cologne is the French name, which like many other places was adopted by English as well
That's for all the drunk ppl that going to party between Cologne and Düsseldorf 😅 the light is turned off for energy saving. Btw the next time you come to Germany you should look out for a Bahn card there are different types but they mostly save you a lot of money if you travel around the country with the train
They are only really worth it when you travel with ICE or IC because now we have the 49€ ticket which includes all kind of trains except ICE/IC and EC, trams and busses.
Thanks for watching as always!

Your job as the spokesmen for overnight trains is going to be amazing once the China/Europe high speed rail line is built in the next decade. High-speed sleeper trains from anywhere in Europe top anywhere in asia
*cries in north american*
Düsseldorf has one of the largest communities of japanese ex-pats in Germany. I sometimes travel there for business, and consider eating out a small treat. I hope you liked it!
Thank you for sharing all of these different trains, it's very nice to see them all! I have a question: Have you ever taken the DMV, or Dual Mode Vehicle, on the Asa Coast Railway in Shikoku, Japan? If not, would you consider doing so? I saw another video with it but they don't do as nice a job as you do. Thanks!
Gute Fahrt!
I love how you confirmed the "rumours" that the German trains are running in the night instead of referring to the delays showing in the background:D
Very nice. Thank you.
Excellent don’t you sleep 💤 at night but very interesting..👍🏻
❤ to you Kuga,. Night train tickets are much cheaper at night esp ICE (standard class). Also there are a lot of genuine night trains moving across Europe throughout the night perhaps its to hook up with them
Perhaps many people need to catch a flight at DUS and use the ICE for a part of the journey. Or arrived at FRA or CGN and are going home. Also less crowded and cheaper than a day train. And perhaps some of them went to a concert or something similar. Btw the Rhein-Ruhr agglomeration has more than 10 million people so there is always demand.
Hope to see you in Berlin, I could give you a tour about the secrets of the Berlin U-Bahn 😊
Beautiful ❤️
I used to live in Hanau…Army kid…& went to high school in Frankfurt.
You must really be jet-lagged to be riding trains 🚂 this late. 😀
A bit bonkers to do this, but still informative and entertaining. I'm worn out now. I'm off to bed.....
Now that's certainly an unusual choice on how to experience this train. Were you short on time to make a trip in daylight?
You rode on a 30 year old train, which appears to stop every 50 kilometers or so, it was a wonder that it reached a speed of 200 km/h. It's slightly hypocritical to complain about night riders, don't you think? 😂
This train was coming from Frankfurt Airport, so it makes totally sense for the route to Hamburg at this time.
Anyways, love your channel, thanks!
Cologne is a party town, like Zürich and Berlin, therefore night trains.
The night ICE is very cheap compared to daylight connections.
The Cologne Cathedral is not illuminated because we try to save energy.
The train tickets are cheaper in the night
Concerts are over in late evening
Early flight
Should’ve taken a ICE 2 for this route
All I ever saw of Koln was the cathederal whilst waiting for a connecting train
it is strange but the biggest metropolis of the world - tokyo doesn't even has night buses. Between midnight and 04:30 no public transport.
The train you rode was the ICE2 i think. top speed maybe 200-300mph
Oky 😊❤
👍👍👍👍
I think you are wrong. The Ulmer Münster is the world highets cathedral.
So did that cathedral have damage during WWll
Well, I'm certainly no expert and am happy to be corrected, but I doubt this would be available in the UK, either.
i am living in germany and a half filipino and would appreciate if youd try the filipino starliner bus
There’s Germany reasons to want to visit Deutschland
"Why is this train so crowded at this hour?" Well, to be fair, what else is there to do in Köln at 2:30 in the morning but go to Düsseldorf?
And even at night they change the platform short notice 😂
I bet Cologne cathedral will be great when it's finished in 2510 🤔sorry I couldn't resist. I always wonder how place names are translated in to English, I mean how did Koln become Cologne? Baring in mind there is a city in England called Colne which is pronounced exactly the same way as Koln!
To my knowledge, it was called Colonia during the time of the Roman Empire, and evolved into Köln in modern German. Cologne is the French name, which like many other places was adopted by English as well
some people might take this train to transfer from Frankfurt to Hamburg Airport or are just on their way home
Fill in move unit DDF-KLN for tram KLN-DDF Kuga meht
That train look similar to the game
I want to go on a trip to Germany. 🇩🇪💗🤗
😎😎😎
Can you choose either English or Japanese caption as i keep missing the English one's? I want to enjoy your reports to the max. Thank you.
Why would it never happen in Japan?
No regular trains at night.
Stations are closed and cleaned then.
There are two sleeper trains, but no other
Ads go forever if you don't turn them off. Seriously an 8 minute ad.
🤣🤣🤣
That's for all the drunk ppl that going to party between Cologne and Düsseldorf 😅 the light is turned off for energy saving. Btw the next time you come to Germany you should look out for a Bahn card there are different types but they mostly save you a lot of money if you travel around the country with the train
They are only really worth it when you travel with ICE or IC because now we have the 49€ ticket which includes all kind of trains except ICE/IC and EC, trams and busses.
