Heli takes a dip

- UPDATE: On December 17, 2012, we lost our beloved Heli and our African Grey to Teflon Toxicosis. A family member turned on the automatic oven cleaner and exposed all four of our birds to toxic fumes. Teflon, when heated above 500 degrees (which is how oven cleaners work), releases a gas that will kill birds within minutes. This is true of Teflon-coated frying pans left empty on a heated stovetop. Our African Grey, Rio, was in the kitchen and, since he was the most interactive, was the first one to clue us in that something was wrong. He couldn't keep his balance and threw up. We then discovered Heli had already passed away and our cockatiels were looking sick. We rushed them to an avian vet, where the three birds were placed in oxygen tanks and given many breathing treatments/IV medications. Unfortunately, Rio's lungs failed and he passed away early the next morning. Our cocaktiels stayed in the tank for six days and were released. It has been ten months and they are as happy and strong as ever. We don't understand why they were spared, since Heli was actually further away from the fumes than they were. We don't understand any of this, really. It was an accident, obviously, and my brother was/still is mortified. My two sisters and I knew that the oven cleaner was deadly. We habitually took the birds outside if it was a nice day or took them upstairs in the winter, always opening up the windows to air out the kitchen when cleaning the oven. Apparently my brother never noticed this. With one press of a button on the oven, we lost two our of family members. I'm hoping that somewhere, someone will read this and it will save them the loss of their birdy friend.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm very grateful to have come across your video that had this information.
Aw cute bird! Sorry for your loss! I love how he gets out of the bowl and walks across the table with his wet feet!!! So cute!!!

So sorry for your loss. He is beautiful.
I am so sorry for your loss. It has been about 6 months now so I hope you are healing well. I have had my sun for over 16 years now and I literally will start crying when I think about when his time comes.... Cute video
How adorable! These birds are wonderful!
I love watching them take their baths. They are so enthused. What a little cutie.
sorry to hear about your losses.
what bright and pretty colours this bird has!
The fumes are odorless. Best bet is to teach anyone you live with to never turn on the automatic oven cleaner without moving the birds to a different level, with the windows in the kitchen open. Teflon-coated pans on the stove will do the same thing, but only if they are left on the stove empty and allowed to overheat. Best bet is to educate every family member. I knew this, but because my brother didn't, we lost 2 of our family members. It was an accident, but one that could've been prevented
I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for the warning, though. I'm sure your birds are enjoying themselves over the rainbow bridge!
YOUR BIRD IS BEAUTIFUL!
too cute. Like somewhere between a lovebird and an eclectus, except brighter in color. He's a good climber too.

I love the little noise he makes afterwater goes up his nose - "Snft!"

Now that's how birds in paradise look like ! :-)
so sweet!
I am sorry to hear about your loss; may you meet up again over the Rainbow Bridge. They do bring us pleasure and entertainment while they are with us. I enjoyed Helio's video and wish people would heed to your warnings both toxic, loudness and territorial at times. They are NOT for everyone as you need as patience and even though trained they are still wild creatures at times.
That was so cute!
Very cute!!
LOL I love how he runs off like that in the end and wets the table drying off. So cute.
My grandfather had a parrot like this one that liked to bathe in bowls, but only after you added cornflakes and milk.
He's a beauty

Great vid :)
I LIKE THE WAS HE WALKS AROUND THE BOWL! ;3
hes like do u mind im trying to take a bath
This is EXACTLY how my Jenday conure starts out her baths. First, the beak test, then the one foot test, then *tink tink tink tink* around to the other side of the bowl. If all goes well it's time to get in!
i am in love with his feathers!
wow. its amazing how different birds are so much alike. my budgie does the same exact thing ans this conure.
aw how cute!!!!
at 1:00 "Damn too small bath"

Tão Lindo!!!!
Beijos
woow , i really like this bird it looks so sweet and beatiful and this color is so nice
this bird has got nice colors!
We all love a nice bath.
It depends on where you purchase them. Ours was hand-fed until he was a couple of months old. He cost around $600 dollars, but that doesn't include his cage, toys, vet visits, etc. It can get quite expensive, but of course, it's totally worth it :) He's a member of our family and you can't put a price on that!
My Kiko also loves doing this :)
Adorable. Love the name, too. So fitting for a sun conure. :) As a fellow bird owner, might I suggest that you cover the entire table (and for that matter, the whole house) with towels? XD I get sprayed with water all the way over at my desk just from my guys eating moist veggies...
He's so adorable, going splish-splash in the bath! :D
Love it :-)
aww thats so cute
Heli is a boy, but he appreciates the compliment regardless!!
Its a beauty
nice
it checks to see how deep it is first before going in.
aw SO addorable :D
I wish I could take credit for how cute he is :D
so cute..
that's why we moved him to the shower, now! He started with his water dish, and we gradually moved the size up. This was the largest bowl we had that didn't scare him. They don't like not being able to touch or see the bottom!
That bird is a big termite from the looks of the wood eaten on the backs of those chairs.
i love conures!
In short, no. If you wanted to spend thousands of hours training the bird with treats, you could. Most people don't have the time/dedication for this. Birds poop a lot. It's just how they are. They don't have a lot of storage capacity because that would make them too heavy & they wouldn't be able to fly. I think this is just a matter of learning to love birds for what they are. After all, we don't dislike dogs because they sniff each other's butts. Gross, but they're dogs! It's what they do :)
If you're a beginner, definetly cockatiels. Sun Conures are expensive, first off, and not as friendly with strangers. In fact, ours chases some of our friends across rooms. He's sweet as pie with us, though, and very smart! Conures are also LOUD. Cockatiels, on the other hand, are very friendly (for the most part) and imitate songs (the males do, anyway). I have a video of our cockatiels, also. Make sure you research before buying, and know exactly what your bird needs!
hahaha looks like a chocobo =3 So cute!
Cute!
0:46 are those sneezes? AWwww
@blubberman911, I'm glad they were honest with you, cause those are both very true things! They're pretty, but a bit of a handful!
May I mention just how strong these birds' beaks are? My sun conure Tequila managed to chew the entire top layer of wood off of my mom's old desk. And when he bites, he BITES. Very tempermental, but very sweet all the same. :-)
aww i never got see my bird do that upclose, she died :( ur bird id very pretty!!!!!
I love how she just walks on you table when she is done. We own a Sun Conure and a Jenday and they are adorable. The Sun is they queen of the house and the jenday loves to cuddle(:
lol, look at how water logged he is. How cute. XD
Aww XD
My sun conure loves to get into the water bowl in his cage and splash around :3
Cute =) !!
You think a Sun is loud? Get a Macaw! LOL
Mr. Sun Conure sounds like a little squeal compared to my Blue and Gold... :)
I have only owned cockatiels - these birds seem very funny like the cockatiels... would you recommned them for apartment life?? I was worried if owning just one they sheirk alot loudly?? and finding a good breeder at a fair price can you recommned anyone?
I can't tell if it was a sneeze or a cough, but it was cute, lol.
@bradshka i had the same trouble with my amazon, so i started misting him about a year ago, instead of bathing him in a bowl, and now hes really happy with it and he fluffs up his feathers and closes his eyes and hes laughing with me all the time when i mist him its the cutest thing ever he loves baths now so I really do recommend trying to spray the birds instead if your having bathing trouble!
"Would you like a bowl of sun conure? It's our soup of the day."
