Hi! My name's Kate and I made this profile mainly so I can show my sister, who is studying abroad in Japan for a couple months, videos of our African Grey. We are all obsessed with Rio, so I wanted to make sure she had a way of seeing him while she was gone.
Therefore, most of our videos are of Rio, just being a goofy bird. He is about 2 years old and is full of energy. He loves showing off (for the family, anyway) and loooooves to play. He basically dominates the kitchen, refusing to sit quietly on his perch. Instead, he constantly asks for food and roots through drawers. He is quite the terror, but you gotta love him!
We also have two cockatiels (Ki'iro and Shiro) and a sun conure (Heli). As I'm sure you can guess, our house is quite loud. But we love it :D

Lovey Rio

This is a video of one of Rio's new behaviors. He's a little over two years old and has started bobbing his head when he gets really excited. He had been picking out a couple of his leg feathers, so when we took him to the vet, she suggested twelve hours of sleep a night in a separate sleeping cage in a dark room. Ever since we've been doing that, he's been extremely playful, talkative, and con...
Neckrub?
มุมมอง 2.1K17 ปีที่แล้ว
Rio, our 2 year old African Grey, playing around. He asks for neckrubs (although he doesn't always want them) and makes a swooshing noise that my dad does when he "karate chops" at him. He loves that game and plays karate chop on his own, dodging imaginary hands and karate chopping himself with his foot. He's a sweetie.
Heli takes a dip

UPDATE: On December 17, 2012, we lost our beloved Heli and our African Grey to Teflon Toxicosis. A family member turned on the automatic oven cleaner and exposed all four of our birds to toxic fumes. Teflon, when heated above 500 degrees (which is how oven cleaners work), releases a gas that will kill birds within minutes. This is true of Teflon-coated frying pans left empty on a heated stoveto...
Heli running

This is a video of our sun conure, Heli, running. I'm not sure why, but watching him run always makes me laugh.
Rio & Daddy

This is Rio, playing with daddy! Rio loves dad and, in fact, besides a few high-pitched noises he picked up from the girls, Rio only likes to imitate Dad!
weeee!

This is Rio, showing off his newfound use of the word "weeeeee!" My sister has yet to hear this and I somehow got it on tape!
Hello, Rio!

This is young Rio, when we had just taken home. This is when he first started talking.
Rio Foraging
มุมมอง 3.3K17 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a tiny glimpse into our daily lives with Rio. He hates to sit on his perch.. That's not where the action is! Instead, he crawls up and down the chairs and drawers, looking for things to throw onto the ground.
Rio learns his numbers
มุมมอง 2K17 ปีที่แล้ว
Rio learning his numbers. You have to listen carefully (it's soft), but he has "one" and "two" down. We're working on "three". Pardon my sister in this video, she had just woken up
Playtime!

This is our 2 year old African Grey, Rio, playing on his favorite spot. He loves playing with the chairs. He thinks that they're his own personal play perches. Goofy boy.
Goofy Rio
มุมมอง 3.6K17 ปีที่แล้ว
This is our two year old african grey, Rio, just being his goofy self. He says many different phrases, mostly in my father's voice. You can hear in the beginning, he is having a telephone conversation, but we're not sure what he's saying yet. "Hey, baby" seemed to be his phrase of the day. Sorry for the crazy camera jerking, but he never stays still
My Kiko also loves doing this :)
Watching yr lovely rio reminds me so much of my max they r great pets n very loving thank you for posting these video's you can see just how much he love's you & you love him.
Hi I love yr bird he is so cute I used to have a African grey too his name was max I had him frm just a little baby only 11wks old I had him for 12 yrs but sadly he died at only 14 yrs old I just got up one morning n he was dead I was devastated he talk sang he used to love shouting my dogs name so she would come running in then he would say bed n make a laughing sound I could go on n on about him the things he used to do I really miss him he love going in the car
I'm so sorry for your loss! It's always hard to lose a pet, but to lose a pet so intelligent and beautiful, it's like losing a child. But the memories will always be there. I can still hear Rio yelling randomly "Touchdown!" and it makes me smile :)
so cute..
I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm very grateful to have come across your video that had this information.
We bought him from a bird store that breed birds and sell only bird items. Most larger cities have many of these, you just need to look for them. Don't buy from a chain pet store. They don't hand raise their birds (feed the babies by hand), so they will bite fingers. Trust me, these birds draw blood with their bites. You want a properly-raised bird or else you'll never want to play with them. He was $500 (same price at chain stores), but remember the vet & cage costs. Cages can cost up to $300
In short, no. If you wanted to spend thousands of hours training the bird with treats, you could. Most people don't have the time/dedication for this. Birds poop a lot. It's just how they are. They don't have a lot of storage capacity because that would make them too heavy & they wouldn't be able to fly. I think this is just a matter of learning to love birds for what they are. After all, we don't dislike dogs because they sniff each other's butts. Gross, but they're dogs! It's what they do :)
The fumes are odorless. Best bet is to teach anyone you live with to never turn on the automatic oven cleaner without moving the birds to a different level, with the windows in the kitchen open. Teflon-coated pans on the stove will do the same thing, but only if they are left on the stove empty and allowed to overheat. Best bet is to educate every family member. I knew this, but because my brother didn't, we lost 2 of our family members. It was an accident, but one that could've been prevented
How can you tell whether the fumes are toxic. I have a sun conure too, I don't want to make the same mistake.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you so much for the warning, though. I'm sure your birds are enjoying themselves over the rainbow bridge!
That's too sad
Hey is there a way to teach my parrot not to poop on my shoulder? Cos if he stops pooping on my shoulder I will then be able to take him outside otherwise he will embarras me
Cute!
where did you get your sun conure? and how much exactly did he cost? I'm really set on getting one(they're so cute, i absolutely love them) so i was wondering about prices and a good place to get one
Thanks for the reply! I'll try that.
Parrots tend to like water better. I have a budgie and she hates water. My lovebird, however, adores water and dunks her whole body in. It's simply the personality of the bird. You can try misting him with a spritz bottle and see if he prefers that. Otherwise, just leave him be and spot clean here and there when he needs it :) Hope this helps!
I love sun conures, wish they weren't so loud though. This is a beautiful bird. Shame that he passed away.
My budgie really hates water, and when we get him some water to bath, he only puts his beak inside... Please help!
I can't tell if it was a sneeze or a cough, but it was cute, lol.

What a sweet boy. Sorry for your loss.
Cute =) !!
Uh-oh! Heli made a mess XD how cute!
I am sorry to hear about your loss; may you meet up again over the Rainbow Bridge. They do bring us pleasure and entertainment while they are with us. I enjoyed Helio's video and wish people would heed to your warnings both toxic, loudness and territorial at times. They are NOT for everyone as you need as patience and even though trained they are still wild creatures at times.
I feel horrible for you. my sun conure juicy couture is 6 months old I had her from 2 weeks. I cried when I read your update. God bless...Sasha
So sorry you lost your bird :(
i am so very sorry for your loss, best wishes for your greys fast recovery.
Sorry to here about the death of your sun conure! We have a 3 year old one and he's defiantly got a massive personality! Can be a nightmare at times but also very funny!
