Glad to be able to share the behind the scenes on this with you!!
If you haven't seen the documentary I went to shoot, you can watch it here:
    th-cam.com/video/-qPDLh1Xr-M/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much again to that amazing crew of people who made this possible
If you want to join that crew, this is your official invitation to come join us over on Patreon~ I would absolutely love to have you there! (^-^)
Fun backstory for anyone who is interested in reading it
So something many people don't think of is that during the fall and winter, since Japan doesn't have daylight savings time, the days get really short.
And since Kyoto is surrounded by mountains, that shortens the days even more!!
So the real unseen challenge, was filming almost everything in these super short daylight hours (it was basically dark by 5 pm lol)
But still managed to pull of 3 main videos, a livestream, and 2 videos for the patreon crew
all-in-all not bad! Especially considering that mid-day we kept having to do that human thing and eat lol
But I really hope that you have enjoyed this series!! I am hoping to do more in the future and look forward to sharing! again, I'd love to have you along for the ride!

I miss Japan so much as well. I've gone 4 times and I still haven't seen enough. To be fair the first two times were on school or organised trips, so I've only been twice as a personal trip, so I've had to see places I've already visited more than once (travelling with friends). I'm really hoping that I might be able to go at the end of next year. All dependant on Covid I guess.

This footage reminds me of my first trip to Japan, over a decade ago. It was before the massive tourism boom, with foreigners being extremely rare, no English on signs etc. It was not uncommon to be eerily alone in the temples and streets, especially during the night. This brought back so many memories of me wondering around Kyoto, as clueless as one can be.

I had heard the suggestions to photographers to visit places that are normally inundated with tourists during the COVID-19 shut downs. This affords you the very rare chance to see places like you may never see them in your lifetime. Your comments at 4:30 ring true. You are lucky to be where you are, when you are, and with the equipment to document it in such a unique state.
When I lived in Versailles, France, very close to the chateau, I got to learn the schedules and ebb and flow of the armies of tourists. One day just happened to coincide with special local residence appreciation day where the palace was closed to tourists and because I was living in town I was able to get in and take some fantastic photos of the Hall of Mirrors with NO PEOPLE at all. That was so cool and I just wish I had a better camera at the time. So, it is totally worth going to these places and getting "impossible" shots as this chance may never come again!

Thank you for sharing the situation of Kyoto! I've been to Kyoto many times but now I live in Tokyo, really miss Kyoto! Your way of approaching people for the interviews is very polite! So nice☺️

This is such quality content- thank you for sharing. I traveled to Kyoto in 2011 shortly after the Fukushima disaster and had a slightly more crowded but similar experience. Perhaps we will never see it so peaceful again.

My parents visited Japan in 1977..bc my dad worked for Canon. And for the rest of my moms life, kyoto remained one of the most beautiful places, if not the most beautiful place, she said she ever saw. And she was pretty traveled. It certainly looks beautiful. And that orange roofed place/palace...my mom was there too. It matches my parents pictures exactly. She used the words tiny beautiful and magical to describe it.❣️ I'm grateful to see this and see some of what she saw. Thank y'all. 💯💐

Visited Kyōto back in May 2019 and it was a dream come true.
Such an amazing place, combining so many aspects of japanese people, culture and tradition in a vivid and heartwarming way.
Hope to be able to return in October 2021.
Thank you so much for your videos!

Just yesterday I found a photo of me at the Heian Shrine - back in 1995. Great memories of a city way less crowded than my last few visits there. Glad you’ve experienced Kyoto both ways now. It would be sad to see Kyoto so quiet now but when I experienced it less busy it’s just the way it was. Beautiful city.

Amazing about the old mountain lady, when you think about hardy old people in the west it’s usually some grumpy grizzled old tough person, that woman was the definition of hardy but so happy. Amazing

I had a similar experience visiting Rome last June. I will never forget standing in the Forum late on a Friday morning with only one other couple in the entire place. It was eerie but it was also a once in a lifetime experience. The same thing was true of Trevi Fountain and several other major tourist sites.

I really love those "behind the scenes" videos, they can tell a lot about technical aspects of making documentaries and also they are answering those untold questions "how have you made it" :D now I'm going to watch the documentary itself 😀

Hey Norm just wanted to thank you for all of the really cool Kyoto content recently! I'm an incoming JET that got my placement in one of the suburbs outside of Kyoto, and assuming nothing else changes with travel due to Covid-19 I'll be moving there in late January so it's really cool to see another perspective of what the city is like right now!

not gonna lie...I'm a bit jealous. The last time I went to Kyoto in 2019, Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari shrine was such a bad experience because everyone was just shoulder to shoulder....kiyomizu-dera was out of the question for us cause it was so crowded. In the end, the best part about our experiences in Kyoto was visiting a small local shrine, and sitting in a park overlooking the mountains whilst eating food from lawson.

The Inari Temple a night is amazing. I was in Kyoto for a few day's. First day I walked for over 26km. That's how exciting Kyoto was to walk around. And I was at the Inari Temple for over three hours.
Again it is awesome during the day time, but at night, it gives a whole new feeling.
Thanks for doing such a great video of Kyoto. 👌👍
Brings back the great memories of burning the soles off my running shoes. 😉

Kyoto is one of the ideal cities I would love to move to. Smaller city, wonderful traditional cultural areas, many Machiyo-style houses to buy, close to numerous nature areas, wonderful people...just an absolute dream!
