PSA: You can play fetch in camp with Scratch; simply throw his ball (it needs to be his specific ball you get from that interaction). He will walk over to it, pick it up, and bring it over.

When Orin went on her spree, I was panicking about her getting to Scratch, Grub or Owlbearby. When, on a later playthrough, she managed to nab Yenna and in the process kill Grub, I so wanted an extra option in my dialogue and fight against her. Something along "even Bhaal will now find out how much you f*cked up, you freak". Followed by an epic rage-filled killing strokel, screaming "You Don't Touch My Animals!".
My Wizard never picked an Intimidation option up to this point, ever. She always went for Persuasion or even Deception. Soon as she saw how the handler treated Scratch, didn't even read the other options, "I'll grind every bone in your body to dust, and disintegrate the rest."
That makes me half wish the game would recognize how you act in past interactions, so that your companions would be surprised if you were acting out of character... but that'd be a technical nightmare to program, so I understand why that isn't the case. I'm just imagining a wizard who is always the mediator, a quiet type who seems borderline pacifistic, simply informing someone that she's about to fill them with so much lightning that their flesh erupts from their bones as a feast for her dogs. Just IMAGINE the looks on everyone's faces.

I lost the ability to summon scratch and play fetch with him after this quest 😢 He still running around camp and interactable there but the button is missing from my hot bar- I can’t find his ball either😢
You might've accidentally sold the ball at some point, I know that I had the ball in storage when doing this, and the ability to summon Scratch as a familiar went away after the check to keep scratch, but then pulling the ball out of storage and playing fetch with Scratch again restored the summon.
I'm struggling to understand how I put over 400 hours in this game and never found this encounter!!! Well, I guess I just found a reason to do another run, just for this.
My Karlach and Laezel were playing catch and she was the ball itself. She didnt get hit by any weapon or spells. She just gave in to the impact of dirt, gravity, and physics. Of course that alone doesnt deal alot of damage but that just makes it more slow and painful for her.
We have to protect Scratch! The best boi! I also have the owlbear at my camp, he'll proect Scratch too u.u Anyway i didn't think we could kick away that woman. Once i get there (again), I'll do the same. The doggos need a better trainer.
After you get Mar'hyah to leave (and maybe kill her, I didn't do that), talk to the other dogs besides Scratch. They basically all say "She's gone..?" and follow up with variations of "the witch is gone...!".
Animals in this game are adorable. The poor doggo saying: "Mistress forbade me to receive any scritches, cratches..." 💔 Not sure if it was an addition, but he thanked me after getting rid of the kennel Mistress on my recent playthrough.

Yeah it's because of the surgery. There is a mod to restore the visuals of your character's eye after Volo's "surgery" though. It's called "Unvisual Volo's Eye".

Laezel isn’t pro animal abuse, she just hates what she sees as wasting time. To her there’s no reason to bring up the dog to them let alone go through the trouble of chasing away the cruel handler.

Go to camp, he will be back and have dialogue regarding it.

in my evil playthrough i gaved him back to the woman, then talked to him in his cage and when he asked if we cna go home i jsut left him without saying anythign, you could here the pain in his voice when he asked if we cna go home and i jsut left him there, first i wanted to kill him in his cage but then i thought living with this evil woman, is a much better torture, i liked itn when the owlbearcub asked me" where is scratch" and i told him he never comes back
