    questions: I'm not an aviation person by any stretch, but for some reason, I'm watching ( listening) to these videos. What exactly is Ground Steve doing? " Short of ..." " hold at ...." proceed...." etc... Is he lining up planes to enter gates, take off... ? And what's the "ramp" ?

    • @roberthudson1959
      @roberthudson1959 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "Ground" controller is responsible for moving aircraft between the runway and the gate, in either direction. The instructions you quoted are all intended to accomplish that task. The phonetic alphabet calls are the names of taxiways, ao "Kilo-Golf" is taxiway KG. "Ramp" is the area between the gates and the taxiways/runways.

    • @andrealmeida5983
      @andrealmeida5983 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's the ATIS letter. Every time the ATIS gets updated the letter is changed.
      The aircraft saying "With Xray" means they have ATIS information Xray. In case Xray isn't current anymore ATC will just tell them to get the new ATIS, in case it still is there is no need to say anything.

      @naturalorang3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +eblalgen Take a look at the map for JFK Taxiways, ground (which is what Steve is usually on) gets departing planes lined up and then hands it over to Tower to line them up on the runway. For arriving planes tower lines them up and sends them back to ground. Tower is typically working the taxiways closest to the runway and ground the taxiways closest to the terminals.

      Another holding aircraft is occupying a spot on the taxiway so the following aircraft will take another taxiway, left or right, go to an intersection to turn and come back or "double back" on the parallel taxiway "alpha" (A) to get in front of the holding aircraft. They're just juggling aircraft around each other in the case of one sitting and waiting for a spot at the gate or in the case of a departure, waiting for clearance delivery. It's a busy airport kind of thing.
