    I remember working the tower one day and the GA runway had a string of arrivals lined up and I couldn't get anyone out for a few minutes. At the same time a bunch of departures wanted to go. I told everyone to standby and I'd get back to them in a minute or two. I got things cleaned up and asked who was #1 at the runway. No body answered so I said someone had to be #1... A Cessna said they were #1 so I told him to taxi into position and hold. He came back and said he couldn't get around the Citation in front of him. I said we'll then I guess you're not #1 are you and his reply was.... Well no one else answered so I figured I would! 🙄🙄

    • @jeffreysdavis
      @jeffreysdavis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      there's different stations. Ground is managing the movement to and from the runways, but another ATC is strictly clearing for departures, and yet another for arrivals. When they get backed up it's probably just easier to communicate with the pilots who each know their position, than to ask another ATC to find that one plane out of the dozen or so on their list every time

    • @xuploads
      @xuploads 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      They aren't responsible for keeping things on schedule so I doubt they care. I feel bad for the regular tugs that don't have an enclosed driver's seat. I know that nowadays a lot of them do, and maybe they're all like that now at airports in the north like JFK, but I do know that non-enclosed ones are still used at airports in the south with warmer climates. If the weather's calm and warm obviously there's no issue but on days when it's raining... that has to suck.

    • @ecclestonsangel
      @ecclestonsangel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martintheiss743 I think so. They go from one terminal to the next, pushing planes out and bringing them in, from the sounds of things. The ATCs and the pilots consider them a wicked nuisance because they frequently hold up planes trying to taxi to their ramp, or take off. And they're worse than the pilots at not answering when they're called. I think they turn their radios off or just plain tune out. If I were Steve, I would find that exceptionally annoying, not to mention the way they're constantly stepping all over someone's conversation with ground. In the grand scheme of things, I think they're kind of low man on the totem pole.

    Are Flagship,Mercury, Redwood all private airlines not the main ones?

      Speedbird is British Airways, Redwood is Virgin, Shamrock is Aer Lingus, Brickyard is Republic, Waterski is Trans States Airlines. Mercury - no idea.

    Excuse my ignorance, but - are these recordings old? Seems, from what I read, that Steve retired years ago. Did he come back, or are these highlights from the good ol' days?

      He's still active. That's some other controller who retired.

      The dead space between transmissions has been edited out, but I imagine at a place as insanely busy as JFK, it can feel like this sometimes.

    Awesome video!
    I've one technical question. When we hear blocked message, because more than one was talking, the tower hear them all? I mean , do they use some multiplexing so different ATC operators can listen to different planes, while using the same frequency.
    I hope, that this is the case and only liveatc.net has some simpler receivers than the tower has :) .

    • @GarretTheShadow
      @GarretTheShadow 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Murphistic I believe they can't. Because of how radio communication works, when a message is blocked they cannot hear it at all.

    • @Murphistic
      @Murphistic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +GarretTheShadow Thanks! That makes sense. I thought, that only plane - tower communication is going on, but it's also beneficial for the planes to hear each other.
      When I wrote my comment I was thinking about code division multiplexing on CDMA mobile networks and analogue frequency multiplexing on phone landlines, but those are only for point to point communication. That's why I was confused and apparently also wrong :) .

      Usually it's gibberish but sometimes discernable especially for the controller and planes and ground crews (we're listening to an archive). If u listen to more Kennedy Steve he is great at it.
