    I think it would make a fun update video if the S6/Edge get more manual controls, especially shutter speed (there are talks of an update). What I show here is what the S6 and G4 are capable of right now. This approach makes sense since I can't fabricate something that doesn't yet exist.
    I know this ability to implement shutter speed is possible with camera2 api, but who knows if Samsung will actually implement this feature and if it will be comparable to the G4.
    It's killer that the G4 is capable of keeping the shutter open for as long as it can.
    Thoughts?

    Thanks again, Erica. I bought this phone about 10 days ago, primarily because of the camera (and the removable battery), but haven't experimented yet with the camera. I was very interested in your comments on "manual mode," although I don't see any means of shooting plain old B&W. Probably start taking some test photos tomorrow.

    Great review, Erica. I picked up the phone from T-Mobile yesterday, and my brother pointed me to parts 1 & 2 of your G4 review. They're very helpful -- I learned a lot about how to use different features of my phone.
    I do have a couple of questions --
    Did you do your photo comparison based on JPG, or RAW? I'll try a few photos tomorrow morning on the golf course and see how they look.
    Did you run into any problems with Bluetooth? I've noticed that it won't automatically connect with my car stereo (2015 Subaru Forester), and that I'll have to manually try to connect it, sometimes 2 or 3 times. It could be the Subaru -- my model of the Forester has a very wonky Bluetooth, and I'm looking at replacing it.
    But so far, that is the only problem I've encountered.
    I love the screen, and it's a lot easier to use and more stable than my Galaxy Note 4 that I'm trading in for it.

      That'd be cool. Yeah, so far all I know of is a rumored 5.2" Xperia P2, which looks great and all, 4240mha battery... drool. But That's still a little on the small side screen-wise.

    • @FredwardGames
      @FredwardGames 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Inner Ear Thing about 3 years ago you would have looked insane for describing a 5.2" display as small but I agree. Sony needs to have a massive overhaul on its proper 2015 flagship, the Z3+ is just an interim flagship imo.

      Lol, I know right? It's crazy how things are now. But with bezels getting steadily smaller, we have more room for screen without the phone itself getting bigger. In fact, my S6 actually feels really small compared to my past two phones which had similar size screens or larger, which were a Z2 (5.2"), M8 (5.0"), and before that an Oppo Find 7a (5.5").

    I'm jealous of the camera app, I wish I could use it on my Note 3. I have a full frame DSLR so I don't really care about having a great phone camera but that app would definitely help, the stock Samsung one requires too much menu diving sometimes. A shame phone cameras still fall over in low light, I'm not sure how they're going to fix that because they seem incapable of increasing the sensor size and an f/1.2 or 1.4 lens would protrude from the back even more.

    I really like my G4. There are a couple negatives, though. The AT&T version doesn't have multiple users, quick glance, and even with automatic brightness turned off, the display automatically dims at random. Everything else is great, especially the camera (the 30mbs 4K video is not an issue for me since I have no other display to watch it on so I don't use it).

    Who knew my battery life wasn’t that bad after all. I’m still using a `hand-me-down´ i9100 (2011!) as a daily driver and with cm11 m12 I have 2,5 hours SOT lasting though out the day. I listen to music for at least 3 hours when I commute to work, play some games for about 30 minutes, check my google+ and/or WhatsApp, view some nice reviews on TH-cam like this one, reply some business e-mails and answer 5-10 phone calls per day. I do consider myself a power user and if I could only double my SOT that would make all the difference. So to the people complaining about SOT’s of 3-4 hours after heavy usage: Let's try to keep everything in perspective…

    Thank you Erica,
    Right now, I haven't seen anything out there that would make me want to upgrade from my unlocked/international S4 (truly, even the camera is very good).
    I've got 4 batteries (including tired original), charging systems in office car and home, and a Samsung battery case/charger. We travel internationally and no longer worry about connecting when we get to other countries (in the past wife has been blocked from her Hotmail when traveling - "they" think she is a cyber thief :) ). So like you, our S4 is in place of a laptop. And when riding buses (taxis or walking) in our countries (Thailand) nothing beats Google Maps.
    So right now, here is a "Thank You" to Samsung and Google. I just hope they don't really mess things up in the next generation. (Please Samsung - go back to removable battery & extra memory).
    But I'm really thanking you Erica for keeping us up on new developments. There will come a time when we'll need an upgrade and we'll look to you (and a very few others) for guidance. :)

    I find your tech knowledge extremely attractive [wink wink]. Btw, as for the camera, I use X Cam on my G3 (not sure if it is fully compatible with the G4). It allows me to record up to 4k at 60fps along with some other features. I keep both the stock camera alongside the X Cam. The only thing I do dislike is that I do not have the ability to control the exposure in various lighting conditions. Control is everything when you are a professional photog. That's the only drawback. I'm still looking around to see if there is a G4 stock camera that would be compatible with the G3.

  • @TomCraig1226
    @TomCraig1226 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Erica Griffin Hey Erica, not sure which model G4 you have (sorry if I missed it!), but regarding the 4k bitrate they have indeed already been working on improving it over on XDA. It needs root, so it's only available for the H815 for now, but if that's what you're working with here you go! forum.xda-developers.com/g4/themes-apps/root-60fps-camera-100-photo-quality-t3129460
    60fps 1080p video, high bitrate UHD options (40, 48, 56, or 64Mbit options), and allows the camera flash down to 5% battery.

    I think the slow 4 shot selfie mode is to allow for time to adjust pose a little. That's why people take a billion selfies.. trying to get that right one.
    But this is looking more and more like my next phone. Trying to keep a phone longer than 2yrs has proved battery swap ability to be a huge plus. But the disappointing feel, video modes, lack of easy off contract purchasing, and behind the curve updates (compared to Nexus of the same generation) has me on the fence.
    The $500 Nexus 6 deal is tempting, but the screen quality, size, battery, and camera all hold me back there at $500.
    Or just say screw it all and get the $200 Zenfone 2...

    If you've Auto-Brightness (Adaptive Brightness in Lollipop) enabled, then that brightness slider in the notification bar keeps the Auto Brightness in tact, however it tweaks the algorithm as you increase it. Hence the name Adaptive Brightness. So slider being at 100% doesn't mean, in this case, that the display is at 100% brightness per say. By disabling Adaptive Brightness, you might see a jump in the brightness of the display at 100%.

    Erica, Thank you for all your insight. I appreciate your attention to detail and passion. May I suggest a future topic and ask a question at the same time? If I were to purchase the an international unbranded device to use on the AT&T network would I lose out any carrier network updates that would make the G4 perform more efficiently on their network? Does the carrier branded devices have firmware that make it perform at peak performance and efficiency on their network? I'm not worried about say Android or LG updates since I assume that I can get those manually as needed. I've tried to ask both LG and AT&T this very question/concern and have been unsuccessful with researching for an answer on the web. Thank you for any input that you may have to offer. Keep up all the great work!

    I read online that a lot of LG G4 units are suffering with very terrible touch screen issues where they just don't detect touching and swiping a lot of the time
    In some cases they are simply too slow to respond to the user's touch. There are also few videos on TH-cam demonstrating this.
    Did you come across a similar issue? And if not, could you test this quick with a touch screen tester from the play store?
    Thanks! Love your reviews

    LG G4 all the way. Samsung makes some great phones but my pet peeve with their phones is the physical button and the capacitive buttons. I always find myself accidentally pressing a capacitive button while gaming. Also the physical home button feels like I have to put alot more effort/force into using versus the light touch of onscreen buttons.

    I don't know of any camera that can disable the hardware stabilization while shooting video.
    As for bitrate, I know you dont have a ton of video samples in UHD, but I really can't see any severe loss of quality compared to the codec Samsung is using. I know it's less info, but putting video right next to each other, I'm not seeing this degradation you're talking about.

      I suppose it's possible, but I haven't seen any other side by side comparisons, shot under the same conditions, where it doesn't seem compression loss isn't coming from re-rendering the video. I scoured over my footage from both phones, and I'm just not seeing that huge a material advantage for the GS6's higher bitrate.

    Ok Erica I'm not sure what to do. I prefer the S6 overall, but I'm really digging this G4 camera, and much more so because of the robust manual mode than anything else, since I don't think there's a big discrepancy in their sensors. Which would you recommend, assuming I'm the kind of person who likes to take mostly raw photos with a DSLR and edit in LR or pixlr (if I'm feeling lazy). The G4 is really great. And it's all preference on the end.
    But for those that extremely want the Removable battery and SD slot above all else I would puck the Note 4 still for better display, battery life, software, spen, updates, security, theming, and still better video/audio and daylight shots. And the Note 4 still does decent in low light. Just not as much as the S6 or G4.
    The G4 is a bit faster in CPU while about the same in GPU. And about the same in audio output. And obviously better low light.
    Unless you get the Exynos note 4 which will throttle the GPU less and is a little better in cpu with better audio.
    Or wait for the Note 5 lol... If it has the SD slot.

  • @jackskellington9570
    @jackskellington9570 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would definitely say I like the S6 overall better.
    Camera has better exposure and dynamic range and finer detail in daylight. A little more saturated though.
    And it is on par in a lot of room light settings.
    Not as good in low light, but still one of the best.
    And as far as manual controls the S6 is getting raw and exposure again. Hopefully shutter speed too.
    And for video and especially audio it's clearly the S6.
    For display, soc, ram, enterprise, security, audio output, theming, customizing, features, more updates, battery life and charge times, and battery performance the S6 is just ahead.
    It sucks not having the SD card slot but having extremely fast solid state like memory up to 128gb helps.

      @benjmiester 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Skellington You can still have an SD with the S6 though, just buy a usb OTG adapter. Sure, it can't always be in there, but you don't need it to be. Just when you're using it.

    Great review as always.
    I have the G2 and it has the same noise reduction problem. xdabbeb's XCam can fix this, though I would really like LG to improve this. No 60FPS 1080p is a bummer and bad 4K bitrate just sad. I dont get what LG was thinking. I would also like to disable software stabilization (if it is used) because imo OIS is way better than anything software can do and even on the G2 OIS is more than enough to keep my videos steady.
    I really like this phone nonetheless and I think when price has come down a bit I will get a leather back version for myself.

    Erica Griffin well I have the lg g3 and I have already been able to download the apk files for the new updated camera and such; I know that some features may not work as well but such is life. I still don't think it's that much more advanced from my phone so I'll pass on the lg g4. I would however think about buying the Asus zenphone 2 with 4gb of team and 32gb storage I think it was. The price is great and the specs are something different.

      I was actually giving serious consideration to that phone as well Unfortunately the Asus zenphone 2 battery isn't removable & that's a deal breaker for me.

    I know if it was there you probably would have seen it, but when playing with the G Flex 2 I noticed that in display settings there was three color saturation options.

    Your LG G4 part #1 convinced me to tilt to buying it until I heard what the Samsung Note 5, my god...a great camera, a cell phone and a mini quad TV. Samsung says it will be a 5.7 while others rumored a 5.9 @ around $1000.00. Nope, not me...so I bought a LG G4 with leather back @ T-Mobile, it is nice, but stuck on the back of a plastic case and way better than the case(s) like yours. I was a Blackberry user for years and I don't see the what is so great about Android OS. Come on now, lots of Blackberry's features are on Android & some on Apple. If you want a kids OS, pick Android, you want an Adult OS, get Blackberry or and especially Apple's newer phones and updated OS that's coming out later this year. Apple's newer iPhone's, is going to be some really nice phones. The LG G4 is a great phone people and for it's size, it is a light phone, great colors on the screen, fantastic camera. I was able to take a picture of the moon @ 3/4 full on manuel mode, I didn't try any other mode, but you can see that it is 3/4 full. Anything but a full moon, see if your cell p phone can take and see for sure what phase the moon is in instead of just a white dote in the sky. Erica, covered most of what you can do with the phone, but once you get it home, it's going to "WOW" you or just simply have this smile on your face for several days after then every time you use it no matter what mode it is in look at the differences of Erica's face smiling much more in the second video...
    Thank you Erica for these to great videos.

    Shame about the video quality of the g4. Certainly not up to scratch but stills capability is what I'm most interested in as I don't shoot videos much.
    I'm also a strict manual mode user and for those reasons the g4's camera is the best I've seen aside from the lumia 1020 and pureview 808.
