    Thanks for that great explanation. I've just ordered my first pan pastel set (even though I really can't afford them), and can't wait to try them. I've had similar experience by using a knife to shave the soft pastels into powder, but there are still lumps, so these will be a luxury.

    This was an excellent introduction to panpastels for newbies as me. I have just ordered the 20 colour set, and I can't wait to get on with painting with them. Thanks, Kirsty. Much appreciated! 👍🙏❤

    How come I just found your channel?!
    You explain things so clearly and thoroughly. I honestly did not know about the pure vs tint vs shade part of pan pastels. And I've watched numerous videos on them already.
    Beautiful art as well. Subscribed!

    Being a newbie to Pan Pastels am always at a loss on PAPER to use. So far works well on multi media 90lb. But got a sample of pastel paper (Expensive)But it is like sandpaper and i know woukd tear up the sponges. Hard info to find about paper that is ideal for pan pastels. ?

      The only paper I recommend for Pan Pastels (or any pastels) is Clairefontaine Pastelmat! Unfortunately, there is no other paper that compares to it. It is a unique surface made with natural cellulose fibres (some people confuse it with a sanded paper, but it's actually not)
      This paper allows for many layers of pastel (including details with pastel pencils) and creates a smooth result - I haven't come across any other paper that allows me to get the depth and smoothness I need for realistic drawings!
      If you have a look at my other pastel videos on TH-cam, you'll see me use this paper for all of my pastel drawings so you can have a look at what kind of results you will get on this paper using Pan Pastels with pastel pencils 😊

    Have a large set and did some work with them. Never thought to use a blending palette/sheet.
    Nice piece, and thank you!

    I have a reference photo I need to scale up. I will use the grid method to do this. I will draw it on tracing paper and then transfer to pastel paper. I have transfer paper but I don't have a piece of thin white paper that large 16"x20" or larger to use to draw my drawing from the black and white reference photo. Will this method of coating the back of the drawing if drawn on tracing paper will work as well? Have you tried this or possibly have a better suggestion? Thank you Kirsty. I am a new Patreon member also. I love Patreon!!

      Hi Patricia,
      I haven't tried it on tracing paper, but I don't see why it wouldn't work! (Maybe do a quick test first)
      Sometimes I tape 4 pieces of printer paper together to make a larger sheet to draw the initial outline on (I don't have any thin scrap paper that large either and I find it works well enough 😊)

    Just wondering what the marks were on the pastels? It looked like they had got wet. Beautiful picture, I bought a set for myself for Christmas, haven't used them yet as, I didn't know if you could get much detail with them so this was very useful thank you

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely get a good amount of detail with the smaller tools which is nice!
      I use pastel pencils quite often with my Pans to get finer details when necessary as well
      I'm not sure what marks you mean, but Pan Pastels tend to get bits of the other colours throughout the other pans (cross-contamination from when I switch colours etc)
      I don't usually worry about it too much, but you can just use a tissue and gently wipe the surface of the pan to clean it off and it looks good as new again 😊

    Kristy i am v big fan of your art please teach us some skills by using pastel pencils or sticks only cuz place from where i belong pan pastels are almost impossible to get and are very expensive. I want to see how you use pastel pencils or sticks for landscapes. N please whenever you are making videos on pan pastels kindly tell us ways to use pastel sticks or pencils as well . And can we crush our pastel sticks to make pan pastels? Are they going to give us same results??

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there,
      I have quite a few videos just using pencils or sticks, but I mainly do wildlife art with a few other subjects like landscapes occasionally
      Any time I'm using Pan Pastels, you can just use pastel pencils or the pastel sticks as a base instead, just make sure you blend with a cotton tip to smooth it out
      You will most likely need a couple of layers with sticks/pencils to get the coverage that pan pastels do but it is the exact same process of layering whether you use sticks/pencils/pans so you can still follow every tutorial if you want to because it will give the same results (they are all soft pastel, just in different forms)
      You may just have to play around with it yourself and do some practice pieces to get the hang of it
      I've never crushed my pastel sticks, so I wouldn't be able to give you advice on that sorry!
      These two tutorials is just pastel pencils

    There is much excellent information here!
    You might want to slow down the speed of the narration.
    Click on the ‘gear’ icon at the top right of the screen.
    You will see different speed options.
    I chose .75
    Much easier to listen to.

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's a good option, we tend to talk a bit fast in Australia (even though I try to slow down for tutorials 😂)

      @@renzo6490 everyone is different! I usually have to speed up videos to stay focused! Also, this is one of my older TH-cam videos and I have definitely tried hard to talk slower in my more recent videos because you're not the first person to mention it 😊
