      @@charitysketches it's a mixture of things.. One is because I'm using a sanded paper which allows you to add more layers easily and doesn't just blend the layer underneath into it
      You can use a new sofft tool (or a clean one) to add the white (which I recommend if you need a pure white!)
      but you can also just wipe the excess pastel off of your tool on a paper towel of cloth, then use the white which is usually what I do 😊

    Nice picture. There is a lot of comparison to pastel sticks, and I understand that, but they're actually different and yield different results in that the marks sticks make are very different than you're likely to get from pan pastels and sofft tools, so it makes sense to have both if you're serious about getting into pastels.

      Since this video, I actually worked with Pan Pastels to create my own set of 20 colours that I use for a variety of subjects (landscapes, wildlife, human portraits, florals, birds, pet portraits, still life etc) which includes the 5 base colours plus 15 of my most used colours - so you don't have to mix every colour, every time - but if there's a colour that is missing, you can use those 5 base colours (red, yellow, blue, white, black) to mix your new colour!
      I know I'm biased, but it's worth looking into if you're thinking about getting a set of 20 colours 😊

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't have much experience using coloured pencils over pastel but I have seen other artists do it!
      I usually just use pastel pencils over any pastel work
      The most common brand when working with coloured pencil over Pan Pastel on the Clairefontaine Pastelmat surface (that I've heard people use) is the Faber castell Polychromos 😊

  • @5starorchid

    If you don't have sanded paper, what other papers are good for pan pastels and soft pastels in general?

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, the only paper I recommend is Clairefontaine Pastelmat (which isn't technically a sanded paper)
      I have never come across any other paper that works as well as Pastelmat does
      The paper makes a huge difference with pastels because you won't be able to achieve the same results on other papers, unfortunately!
      If you are on a budget, I would still choose Pastelmat and maybe get a smaller set of pastels (you can blend them to make other colours) until you can afford to add more pastels to your set over time
      Although Pastelmat is a little more expensive than other papers, it's 100% worth it in my opinion 😊
      If you compare it to the cost of purchasing a decent canvas for oil/acrylic for example, it is actually quite reasonable for the results you get with it
      When it comes to pastels, the only supply that I recommend you purchase is Pastelmat! All of the other supplies (brand of pastels, blenders, pastel pencils etc) can be swapped to cheaper alternatives if you wish, but definitely not the paper as you just won't be able to achieve the same results

    Hi Kirsty. Thanks for this tutorial. Have you tried going to a dollar store and getting their makeup sponges to use with PanPastel? They work great. I got 12 of them for $1! Love it as they do wear out when using sanded paper, like you mentioned.

      I have tried them, but I find they don't work as well as the Sofft tools

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is a set of 5 basic colours where you can mix any colours like paint - it does take a while because you can only mix a small amount at a time, but if you just want to try out Pan Pastels, it's a good option!
      I have actually worked with Pan Pastel to come up with my own set of 20 colours which include the 5 basic colours plus 15 of my most-used colours (I use this set for all my pastel work now, so it's useful for wildlife, landscapes, seascapes, birds, pet portraits, florals, still life, and human portraits) and I haven't needed any other colours because you can mix any colour that is mixing using the base colours inside the set!
      5 basic colours: amzn.to/3Mzyzv4

    How do you seal pan pastels?

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you work with these supplies (Pastelmat with Pan Pastels) you don't need to "fix" your work with anything
      Most pastel artists will tell you that fixatives cause more problems than they solve (discolouring, destroying artwork, and not actually "fixing" the work in the first place)
      I keep my work between tracing paper pads until they are framed or shipped to customers (where I include a warning not to touch the work, and how to correctly frame a pastel piece)
      So I avoid using it because there is no reason you need to use it 😊

  • @sunnysodapop

    Does it get tedious/time consuming with how small the applicator is?

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many different sized tools, so if you work large like this often, I'd suggest investing in some of the larger sponges (I usually work a lot smaller than this, so the smaller tools are perfect 😊)

    You can mix every colour having basic set. So why your table is full of pans? :D

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      haha because it's easier and quicker to have more colours rather than mixing them every time!
      Mixing on another piece of paper for a large piece like this takes so much time because you can only mix a small amount - also, it's hard to mix the exact same colour twice!
      It's also hard to mix certain colours with the basic set like pinks and purples
      I have my own set with Pan Pastel since I made this video called "General Realism with Kirsty Rebecca" which only has 20 colours, but its all the colours you need to create any subject matter, and it also includes the basic colours so you can mix other colours that aren't in the set! 😊

      Yes, it's not technically a sanded paper - but a lot of people call it that because it feels quite similar
      But it is a unique surface that is different from any other type of paper, so it can be hard to explain without comparing it to sanded paper 😊

      I used to have a MeWe page that is linked in a lot of my older videos, but unfortunately I didn't want to keep paying to have a page on MeWe!
      I still have a personal account under the same name (Kirsty Rebecca Fine Art) but I rarely use it because I also have Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TH-cam and Patreon so it's a bit too much to keep up with haha

    while I save for my pastel pencils... can I use my drawing pencils over the top (derwent) of pan pastels ? New sub UK . Thank you for sharing xxxxx

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can, however, coloured pencils are more translucent than pastel pencils so you won't get the same effect as using pastel pencils. I also recommend using Luxarchival sanded paper if you want to use coloured pencils over pastels because the texture of that paper allows the coloured pencils to grip on top a little easier (I have used Pastelmat with this combination before, but it doesn't work as well)
      Hope that helps! 😊

    How to fix broken pan pastel

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually asked Pan Pastels about this and they recommend using it as normal (even though it's broken, it will still work as usual)
      If you add anything to the pastel, it can compromise the quality of the pastels and it just won't work the same as before 😊

    Are pan pastels less dusty than their stick related cousin?

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they are, but it depends on how you use them and what paper you're using!
      When I layer thin layers (blending in between) on Clairefontaine Pastelmat, the dust fall off is minimal in comparison to soft pastel sticks 😊

      @@KirstyRebeccaFineArt oh I saw that in the video but I figured that they are expensive even if they are a small pack are there any other supplies you can use instead of pan pastel cause I'm just a beginner 😅😅

    • @KirstyRebeccaFineArt
      @KirstyRebeccaFineArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@pritydhiran2673 They're actually not that expensive when you compare how much pastel is in each pan
      Pan Pastels contain 40% more pastel than an average stick and have 4-5 times more coverage. They last a very long time in comparison to sticks
      You can actually just buy the basic set of 5 colours (red, yellow, blue, black and white) and mix any colour you need, just like paint!
      That is something you can't do easily with soft pastel sticks (this is why people usually have hundreds of pastel sticks - which is way more expensive than buying 5 Pan Pastels)
      I've had my set of pan pastels for about 5 years and haven't run out of any colour yet, and I do a lot of artwork , and if you take care of the Sofft tools, they last a long time as well 😊
      There are also many other benefits such as not having to touch the pastel (so it's less mess on your hands/artwork/desk etc), less excess dust in the air, as well as being able to control how much pastel you are applying to your surface which means you don't fill up the tooth of the paper too quickly - allowing for the addition of a few layers of pastel pencils/coloured pencils etc if you wish!
      You can also use the smaller Sofft tools or brushes to apply into smaller areas, which can be hard to to with a soft pastel stick
      I honestly recommend Pan Pastels over any other type of pastel (even for beginners) because they are actually more cost-effective, and so easy to use! (along with all the other benefits mentioned above) 😊
