    I think you'd really benefit from learning about color theory. "Color and light" by james gurney is a life-changer. Your shadows are all black. Shadows aren't black. Shadows capture and scatter light from ambient sources. In the outside, the shadow against the white stone would be blue. Shadows indoors that catch light bouncing off the red carpet would be red, etc. You can add an important layer of polish to the presentation of this project f you give it a color pass. I do this for a living. If you'd like, I can color correct some screen shots to show you what I mean.

    • @YourFavouriteColor
      @YourFavouriteColor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      also just look at screenshots from mario odyssey and the mushroom kingdom. Look at the shadows around the fountain, look at the sheep and white flowers in the shadow areas. All blue. Seeing this phenomenon is the first step to understanding color and light. Look at distant grass and trees and see them turn blue from a phenomenon called "atmospheric perspective." Your project looks a bit like "programmer art" because there isn't an art director behind the wheel who knows these things. I think it would really bump up your project to give it a pass like this!

      Quality comment! helpful, insightful and polite. Just felt like pointing that out since these are usually rare.
      The colored shadows you're talking about remind me of the minecraft RTX demo. There were a lot of reflected colors basically tinting the whole room and blending into another.

    • @YourFavouriteColor
      @YourFavouriteColor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ollend a little confused by this comment, but okay, study them. you will still observe that shadows capture and scatter colored light based on ambient sources. as a previous commenter pointed out, look at ray traced minecraft. look at vegetation. the shadow tones of trees and grass are blur and the highlights are yellow because of the influence of the blue sky and yellow sun.
      if you instead use "dark gteen" and "light green" your colors lack dimension and look flat and amateur. Just some friendly advice.

    A bit off-topic, but I had quite a strange dream about Super Mario 64 last night, despite not having played any version of the game for years. My dream entirely consisted of exploring Peach's Castle, but while the outside courtyard was the same as always, the internal layout was completely unrecognisable compared to what it was; it was almost structured like an Ocarina Of Time/ Majora's Mask dungeon, complete with puzzle areas that were woven in with the primary pathway.
    One part I distinctly remember from my dream was right near the end, where Mario was ascending up a vertically-spiralling staircase not unlike the stairs behind the 3rd floor door, though it was dark and ominous like the creepy Endless Stairs. After Mario climbed up, he opened a door to a rectangular room with two other doors directly on the left and right sides. Mario went through the left door and was met with a Toad in the corner, which he spoke to (unfortunately I don't recall what Toad specifically said, though I do recall feeling a little unnerved by it), and then he went through the right-side door which lead to the painting for Snowman's Land. As soon as Mario jumped into it and the screen faded to white, I woke up.
    If anyone else has had strange dreams or even nightmares about this game, I'll be pretty interested to know.

      awoo but he’s not making money off of the game. It’s a fan project being distributed for free. It poses no threat to their IPs. Nobody is going to download this instead of buying Odyssey. This serves its own purpose as being a fan project. If he was trying to sell it then there would be a fair point. But he’s giving away a fan project for free. It poses no threat to Nintendo’s games. Please stop defending Nintendos practices when it comes to removing fan games. This game doesn’t threaten Mario game sales in any way.

    I got this game for my 64 in '97...the moments it gave me are unforgettable. Seeing it reincarnated like this is very beautiful and makes me realize some things in between the lines. Up until that point in time before the mid 90's games were fun and mostly run in a 2d semi-3d enviroment but they had not yet reached full 3d mode. Both PS and N presented to us the birth of the 3d era evolving the way we comprehended games and the perspective of the gaming world. Suddenly you had this Sandbox to move in and explore you could stay there hours and hours be4 you decide to follow through the actual adventure the game provided. That was a common theme in many games of that era especially on the N64 games like SM64, Diddy kong racing and Zelda 64 gave that in great deal. This sandbox is the great grandfather of todays open world gaming and it felt rly awesome it hooked us more than we can understand it was non existent up until that point in time anywhere. It made the game feel closer to ''the real thing'' to reality. Another thing that is not usually mentioned is that games have evolved graphically but they fail to provide the rush these machines gave us back in the 90's or even smth close to that. You see in order for that to happen you would require a machine that would provide an evolutionary step in gaming experience EQUAL to the perceptional change these machines gave to us back then. We went from 2D to 3D that blew our minds more than we can understand. Todays machines are powerful and all but they still provide the same perception of gaming these consoles in the 90's provided only way way more polished. BUT they are not evolving it. The next step is to somehow find ourselves IN the game world and feel in complete synch with it. That is the next step that will evolve gaming.

    I remember this! I remember I made and uploaded a video on this in the middle of my school's midterm exams, in between my English and Spanish exams lol, because I was getting bad framerate problems and some lag and so I wanted to showcase my problem. This was so cool and super impressive and high quality. The fact that you used Pannenkoek2012's videos to try and replicate the physics and movement of Mario 64 as accurately as you could was super cool, and if you're going to use this movement in Tubby Super Cat then I'm even more excited than I already was! (Although you scrapping everything in that game you had already built up...again, a second time, was kinda sad).The only problems I really had with this game itself is 1. The dive isn't actually any faster, or at least not noticeably faster, than running, a bit inaccurate to Mario 64, though not bad for a platformer on its own, 2. The wall jump is pretty nerfed, again not bad for a platformer in general, just inaccurate to Mario specifically (beside Odyssey, Odyssey also nerfed the wall jump, though by the looks of it not as much) and 3. The long jump didn't really go any farther than a normal jump, Mario fell too quickly for it to go far, but you fixed that issue. It's a shame this got taken down, I found someone reuploaded it on MediaFire but I don't have the link anymore. Great job on this though, can't wait for Tubby!

    3:45 It depends on how it goes for different companies, but monetising your fan game/remake can end up getting caught by said company. Nintendo however, regardless if it’s free or not, they’ll shut said fan game and/or fan remake down. Just a heads up.

    This is great! If I had one nitpick it would be about Mario's shadow. One of the groundbreaking thing that Nintendo did when making Mario64 was to always have a shadow directly under Mario, to help with platforming and they still do that with new games like Odyssey.

    Maaaaaannnn!!! What did u make here!!!! That is art bro. I LOVED IT, I'm a Mario's big fan, I'm watching with a great smile on my face. Thank you. Every night I dream with a new game like it, and not so "disney" like the wii and switch games. I liked too but I miss the sness times.

    When Nintendo released Super Mario All-Stars on SNES, they remake some early Mario games with new graphics. When they did 3D All-Stars, I think this is what they should've give, a remake for Super Mario 64 with current generation graphics. Imagine Mario 64 music with Odyssey style of music, that would be cool! I'm willing to pay a high price! (and of course, make a better camera angles like Nimso Ny did! xD)
    Nimso Ny did an amazing, most perfect work here, salute to the man!

I mean if you already created the updates all you have to do is upload them like the hard part is over but I'm just happy to see something like thus exists! If Nintendo ever needs someone to work on new games for them, I think they should turn to you because my mind is absolutely blown - all those little features, shadows, it's insane.
