Fun fact with congested motorways the way as they are I welcome a CVT, I drive 99% to work, shopping and it is always in middle to heavy traffic, I cherish my automatic transmission. To me a CVT is actually a sales bonus to actually buy the car instead of a manual!
A manual with a hybrid would be HUGE. That means the feasibility of a manual can continue on for a couple more decades. Japanese companies will most likely keep the manuals alive for much longer.
If they put in the 6 speed manual and engine from the Honda Civic Type R I will find a way to get the money to get this car. The hybrid CVT is a big pass for me.
Using the ctr engine would make it too expensive. People rarely buy coupes nowadays and one with fwd will be looked down upon by most car enthusiasts even.
I doubt the automatic would be a CVT anyways since none of Honda's modern hybrids use a CVT. It does have what Honda calls an eCVT, but it's neither a CVT nor technically a transmission. The electric drive motor powers the wheels most of the time. The e-CVT "transmission" is basically just a set of clutch packs that determine where the engine's power goes when it's running. To oversimplify, it can power either the motor generator (to power the electrical system) or can directly drive the front wheels via a single set gear ratio. This is only possible at ~45+ mph, and the engine can only drive the wheels using this single gear ratio.
@@zkiller195It still drones like a regular CVT . I Watched several reviews and eventhough it mimics shifts when driving at normal speeds, it drones just like a regular CVT when you mash the pedal.
Yeah, considering its going to be Hybrid Manual and CRZ is the one pioneered that concept in Honda, that one is closer successor than the last Prelude. I wished that this Prelude have 4-wheel steering as well like the original one, unless this Hybrid is will use vectoring to serve as 4-wheel steering of some sort.
That hybrid CVT is actually not a typical variable ratio belt CVT, it is more like a single ratio gearbox/flywheel rotated by an electric motor combined with small capacity lithium battery and an obvious 2.0 Atkinson cycle engine (electricity generator) which may or may not be directly linked to the wheels. In effect, it basically drives like an EV, as it uses an electric motor most of the time, with the engine Idling in the background just to recharge the battery at low speeds and being coupled to the wheels at higher speeds or power demands in certain applications. Check out the latest hybrid Civic for how it's implemented!
The new Civic Hybrid still drones when stepping on it just like a regular CVT. I have seen several reviews and eventhough it mimics shifts when driving normal, it drones when you get on it.
@@jpizel1070 Yeah, unfortunately "stepping on it" increases electricity demands and causes the engine to rev higher to make your wish it's command, nature of the beast really. On the other hand, you don't have to put up with charging queues or range anxiety!
It’s a fantastic solution. I bought the 19 insight out of necessity and have come to truly appreciate the electric motor drive. Pure torque 100% of the time feels fantastic.
Now I wonder if there will be a new CR-Z soon as well. Since I can see this Prelude to be likely more expensive than GR86, though that will be a mistake and Honda needs to price it competitively against GR86 and BRZ, especially that this will be FWD and number of enthusiasts will find that "inferior". And just have CR-Z a really cheap option of Honda lightweight coupe but not crazy powerful.
@@kornkernel2232 All they'd need to do is make a 3 door/hatchback version of this and call it the new CR-Z. It'd likely sell decently. I doubt it'll happen though. Just like I doubt Honda is going to try to be competitive with the 86/BRZ platform.
I know Honda is known for front wheel drive cars, but it would be really cool if this was a direct competitor to the GR86 as a rear wheel, drive 6 speed, naturally aspirated for cylinder car. And also fairly cheap
Depends if it's awd or not. The honda E is the only other new rwd honda. The zdx is offered in rwd while the prologue is fwd then awd with the higher trim
Yeah, but then this is Honda who just loves FWD. They are rare making RWD even though they are actually really good at that as well. For RWD Honda coupe, that will be S2000 successor. Hopefully they will make one that isn't hybrid. Basically K20C2 Type-R engine and transmission, but RWD open top coupe. The last ICE-only S2000 successor if you will.
RS is just the Si equivalent for Japan... they have never had the Si trim. There is no reason to expect that the Si / RS 6MT transmission (ICE car) will translate to the Prelude (Hybrid) and I would bet the odds of this happening are 0% ... they'll give it flappy paddles and tell you how great it is.
It still sounds like crap. Just go watch the reviews that are out there. The new Civic Hybrid still drones like regular CVT when you mash the pedal. It only mimics shifts when driving at normal speeds.
@@jpizel1070 yes, the e-CVT found in hybrid vehicles does make droning noise. But they do not have any reliability issues, in contrast to their belt/driven counterparts.

the real prelude is boxier and different than the concept bc here, i see a gr86 chassis, the front and the back looks the same as the latest Toyota CHR. I hope Honda continues respecting the old prelude style before the crowds goes mad.
Since most enthusiasts don't actually put their money where mouth is and buy it, it'sunderstandable if they don't want to invest money in developing the manual. If the car is good enough just by its driving dynamics alone, then it would be ok if they offered it with a torque converter auto or dct, but cvt just doesn't cut it, they sound horrible since there's no revs dropping between shifts, it would sound like a chainsaw when you drive hard.
