Those all used the IMA hybrid system, which was much simpler and less efficient and only helped the car get off the line. The current Honda e:HEV hybrid is a two clutch system. Not sure how they'd integrate a manual into that when it allows the 2nd drive motor to drive the front wheels alone. I think this may be where development of the electronic manual shifter comes in.

This Prelude will be a low volume technology demonstrator for the next gen hybrid system which will eventually be incorporated into Honda's current V6 models. It will be sold at a premium due to low volume and I wouldn't be surprised if it's shelved after a few years. Honda will use lessons learned from issues consumers have with this powertrain to incorporate into the next gen Pilot, Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Passport, which will be built in much larger volumes.

I have the Prius Prime. It shares most things with the Corolla Platform, like the M20 engine and suspension. 100hp over the last Gen, same MPG, and full independent suspension, but performance wise the Prius has famously uncrackable ECUs. Honda Hybrids on the other hand have been cracked and tuned. This thing has the potential.

I think Honda benchmarked 02-06 Honda Accord V6 Coupe. (Prelude Spiritual Successor) That car had a single overhead cam 3.0L V6 with VTEC connected to a 6MT that was reminiscent of the NSX. Very similar proportions and styling, vehicle weight, expected powertrain figures. I’d like to hope Honda can create a lively hybrid powertrain that can comply with 20 years worth of emissions and fuel economy regulations. I’m fine with the car losing top end torque. There’s no need to have 90 mph feel like a comfortable cruising speed.

    I loved my 98 Prelude.
    I also loved my 13 G37x with AWD & 325 hp.
Now I love my Mustang Ecoboost, & I doubt the new Prelude hybrid will have more than 220 hp.
Give it NSX power & a decent price, & it would be considerable.

Prelude was always a funnel of tech from the NSX that way it could go to the masses. Examples Vtec was developed on the NSX but Vtec was put in the Prelude first so the average person could have. The first car with SH that helped develop Diff technology. Hybrid can be fun if done right

Honda had the 90s: CRX, Civic Si,R, Del Sol Si, Prelude Si, S2000, Accord Coupe V6 MT, Acura Legend Coupe, and NSX... that's 9 exciting models that were built for enthusiasts and beloved by enthusiasts. Honda 2024: Civic Type R and its sister the Integra both the same car and we still had both in the 90s you could round up to 10 cars if you count the integra as a separate model. Thats 9 cars down to 1 left. Pathetic.

The only thing that concerns me is interior packaging, which granted Honda usually is pretty good about. Since I am fairly confident it's not going to be a hatchback, it's going to need to show me it has a wide-aperture trunk and an easy-access back seat. If so: sale. I don't need peak performance. I just need something that's going to facilitate me sitting in traffic without wanting to off myself.

Im thinking curb weight will be around 3,000-3,300 lbs, 2.0T with a hybrid and FWD. All that should put it in the ranks with the Elantra N and Mustang Ecoboost(speed wise). Around 225hp would make sense (250+ would be fun.). 0-60 in around 5 secs. Probably will drive like an Audi TT

My first Honda was a Prelude, then 2 Legend Coupes, then 2 CL-S 6 speeds. I've slowly had to give up coupes, manuals, 6-speeds and Acura. The new Integra doesn't work for me, don't want turbo. I hope Honda brings it with the new Prelude tho I will probably not go back to small coupes now. Also, I enjoy your reactions but I find less enjoyment of your Honda reactions, vs the mighty Toyota and your Camry crush. But I guess I'd agree; for me, Honda will never match the fun of the Acura coupes at those ICE price points but they had the best shifters I ever drove.

I hope Honda keeps making series hybrids rather than going the Toyota route. I have a new hybrid Accord and love the powertrain. The only thing I would prefer is for the engine driven gear ratio to biased 5 mph higher than it is now.

Sans the 11g Accord, the new Civic Hybrid seems very promising in terms of fun, too. More power and torque than the old L15CA, and a great chassis to begin with. Honda knows how to make their cars fun to drive in general, I reckon. I wouldn't be afraid of the Prelude not being fun. The 11g Accord Hybrid I heard handles well in the corners, it's just the lack of power that made it more of a miss than a hit.

If the weight of the new Prelude is relatively low like the CR-Z, they don't need a crazy hybrid powertrain (160-200 hp 1.5L hybrid will be more than enough).

11:10 13:38 15:15 I like you Kirk. You're just a car guy in general, regardless of powertrain. I too hope Honda goes with eAWD at minimum to demonstrate to see just how close they can get to that instant torque curve under a hybrid powertrain setup. Although I don't know if it means .....reintroducing turbocharged. But it's not like we know any other way to get more hp out of a 4 cylinder.
My working thought is that Honda could take inspiration from Toyota', where introducing the plug-in design but upping the electric motor and battery just enough to put the performance curve into its own category. Toyota could have done this at anytime, but they just haven't yet since the Prius line isn't synonymous with performance...yet. That can change with Toyota' approach to their Tacoma Hybrid and i-Force MAX.

Maybe Honda is going to drastically tune the power train to be more responsive and performance driven. They've done it before with the K series engines in the mid 2000s different cars with a K were tuned according to their intended purposes. The E Axel sounds good since low weight might not be a priority like the Civic Type R. If its just Front Wheel Drive it will be the same as all the previous Preludes....low weight is important too though.

14:00 Honda's series hybrid system definitely makes for worse fuel economy, but I don't think it's the reason for the responsiveness issue. Toyota's hybrids have the same issue, and it's that the engine just keeps shutting off and the battery will only give you about 40hp instantaneously. You can keep the engine running in a Prius by putting it in B mode, and it makes the throttle response noticeably better.
