There is literally zero reason to buy this over a RWD 225hp GR86/BRZ.
The shape of the car is exactly what a Civic coupe would look like if based on the current Civic sedan. I have a feeling that while last generation’s coupe was being axed due to poor sales, this coupe body style for the next gen was mostly developed already so Honda decided to shelve it and repurpose it for what would later become the Prelude. It just doesn’t scream Prelude. It should be longer, lower, and wider instead of being based on a repurposed Civic Coupe.
It's an interesting design, I just don't know who this car is for exactly. Hopefully it will have AWD or something because it doesn't seem like much differentiates it from a type r, or a civic Si. Price also a huge factor.
The blue little bar at the front lower end of bumper is probably the "hybrid" color symbol. Sort of like Toyota hybrid is a logo with blue background to signify it from standard gas based. The one good thing coming from Honda for once in the case of prelude is that they are modernizing another vehicle in terms of design in contrast to their outdated overcomplicated hotwheels. The hybrid aspect is actually a welcome if they will sell this car in a reasonable price range as a "poor man's sports car" if there is a market of people wanting to drive it often, in which case it would save on gas in our inflationary times.
At this point, people need to stop asking (if they are) for car manufacturers to bring back iconic performance cars, and to keep current existing ones, as they may not or just aren't going to be able to bring back what they did from the past. Regulations from governments and tight budgets are causing manufacturers to have to cut corners in how they design their vehicles, the materials used to put them together, downsizing engines, etc. The latest generation of the M5 has to put up with strict regulations by having a hybrid system to reduce CO2 emissions, a nerfed exhaust for noise regulations (and probably for emissions as well), having a shared chassis with its EV counterpart to keep costs down on having to produce a chassis for an ICE version and an EV version, and probably has loads of plastic in it for costs reasons along with the amount of technology jam-packed into it. This can be said about the latest gen AMG C63S as well. The Dodge Challenger and Charger are not going to be able to be continued in a way fans of them want them to. They are heavy, inefficient vehicles that while yes, are fun and are exhilarating to drive, just aren't going to cut it in the near future when EPA and CAFE standards and regulations get stricter. There are more examples that I could potentially come up wit, but these are a couple of highly-renowned performance cars that people still crave for from their respective manufacturers, though will have to leave in the past at some point due to either manufacturers not being able to make them while having to comply with strict regulations at the same time, or manufacturers just simply failing to deliver what their fans want.
Hi Bembli, regarding the dip down and different thickness of the rear tail light, in my opinion it would make the car similar to a Dodge Charger (2016), I like the original lights of the Prelude better.
Like anything, I’ll want to see it in person before making a full judgement on its looks but honestly I’m a fan! Not many automakers are coming out with new coupes, I applaud this!
I feel like they are gonna do a baby nsx, assuming they give it rear steering I can forgive the hybrid system, but it outside of that they was fine giving it the 1.5 turbo and 220+ horsepower
Would've been so cool if they effectively did what they did in the Gen 1 insight and gave us that ultra rare combo of manual transmission and hybrid. I think as well if you're going to make a CVT drivetrain, then it should have just two simple drive modes. An ECO mode, that effectively only allows you to accelerate in the most efficient way possible, only giving you more power if you floor it or give it more than 75% throttle or something like that, where it'll then give you peak performance instead, and then next to that you get a fully proportional mode that simply gives you a linear throttle response and that's that, no fake shifting BS, no fake engine noises, just a drivetrain that you can use like the tool that it is, to get the best fuel economy possible. Ultimately I think so many cars these days are doing this all so wrong that it's really annoying, you have no idea how much I want to get my hands on a manual Gen 1 insight, to me that's simply the perfect commuter car.
You're asking for Honda to basically make a baby NSX. They brought back the NSX and the sales sucked. What reason would they have to make a sports car like that again?
It couldve been the same 2L turbo from the Civic Type R but with mild hybrid or an electric turbo to eliminate turbo lag. Doesnt need huge battery for these use case but does help in fuel emission in a small way. Couldve been
This is the perfect opportunity to bring back the EG hatch. This short wheelbase with a real hatchback profile (not this liftback thing). Pair it with the port injected k series motor and a 6-speed. Sell it for cheap.
Ill counter you the new prelude is like a proper successor to the old prelude just because of the fact that they're keeping the styling simple They're keeping the engines simple and within their line of engines The prelude wasn't the most powerful nor was it the most fun It was supposed to be a simple blend of a bit above with more comfort and more GT style which it follows suit
In Italy, but I suppose in all european market, Civic is already available with this powertrain. No conventional engines, no manual gear. Furthermore is very highly priced compared with other hatch as Mazda3 or Vw Golf. For all these reasons sales are very low....
IMO all it needs to do is be marginally faster than a GR86, have AWD, and good fuel economy and this will 100% be my daily. If it doesn't have AWD I'm out. Rather just get the AWD stinger.
Who's to say there won't/couldn't be a performance-oriented variant of the new Prelude coming down the line? I feel like history might be repeating itself here and that the new Prelude is getting the same reactions as the new Acura Integra did when it was first unveiled to the public. Now look at what people think of the new Integra now that the Type S is out and about. I suspect that within a year, Honda will tease a Prelude Type R or something. It would simply make the most sense and if Honda doesn't go down this path, then they might have a flop on their hands but I have my fingers crossed.
People forget the prelude was a "test bed" for technology... look at the 4g prelude with all the digital stuff. The 3rd gen with ABS 4 wheel steering and all these models shared that and two other things in common... a sunroof and being sporty handling and power. So 200hp although is low... a hybrid performance could make this car "feel like" 250-300 hp. It's hard to say without knowing more about this car. But this prelude is more prelude than people are accounting for
They should’ve just slapped in the two versions of the 2.0T engine they have Lower trim- 2.0T from the 2022 accord sport 2.0T Higher trim - Civic Type R 2.0T
Hopefully they'll develop a manual transmission for their hybrid system like Toyota with their ev. Plus lets not lose hope that they would release a Type R version since Honda does not release their performance model on debut like we saw with the Integra
Front end of this car has Camry and Prius character designs (Still getting used to that hammerhead look). Also, the front doesn't seem to match the more stylistic design of the rear facia, which I sorta like. I was really hoping for something a bit more evolutionary regarding design language, as this reminds me of an updated Accord coupe, than the Prelude. Under the hood however, is even more questionable b/c of the proposed hybrid specifications, this will surly cut into hp for the sport car enthusiast. Therefore, we should expect base pricing to be around the mid-thirties. It's going to be a tough sell after it's initial debut in 2026, afterwards, will trend downward and the go the way of the CR-X. Can anyone say "dealer mark ups" in the first quarter of its release?1? Bet on it.
With the likes of GR Corrolla to compete with for enthusiast’s attention, Honda had the option of a simple formula to make this a hit: 2.0T from the Accord + RWD + Manual/Auto option. We can only dream I guess.
It is a hybrid low volume sports car partly because the consequences across a manufacturer's fleet in emissions credits and penalties are dire and also as it is based on the civic/accord/cr-v platform, the only way to keep costs and part count low is to use existing powertrains available for those vehicles. Not long ago, we thought they were mad for introducing a sports car when this type of vehicle shape/style is becoming endangered and unfortunately this is the only way the bean counters could approve it!
My first car was a 1993 Prelude SiVTEC. Such a shame that this resurrection is so bad. If they kept this hybrid weirdness but gave options to have the power train options from the lasted civic/integra it would be amazing.
Why are u always doing that honda makes a decision yall say it's the wrong decision the car becomes a success and best seller then yall start liking the car.its the same damn cycle.
Even if this is front wheel drive, this is the same company that makes the Civic Type-R, so Im willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I’m really looking forward to this, I’m hoping it has the hybrid from the civic but with the type R suspension set up
I hate that protruding front end!
Yeah…the front over-hang is killing me.
Always hated that look on mercedes and every car that does it
Hondas performance division deserves the engineering and passion that Hyundais N division gets.
Looks like a Prius coupe.
It kinda has a similar shape to the last generation (2016) c-class coupe.
Hi Bembli, regarding the dip down and different thickness of the rear tail light, in my opinion it would make the car similar to a Dodge Charger (2016), I like the original lights of the Prelude better.
I like the design. When I was young a friends dad had the original Prelude and I can actually see some resemblence.
Two door sports car = enthusiast tuner market, hybrid = commuter market. Who is supposed to buy this?
Like anything, I’ll want to see it in person before making a full judgement on its looks but honestly I’m a fan! Not many automakers are coming out with new coupes, I applaud this!
Looks cool and clean! Reminds me a bit of the Supra and Nissan Z.
You should bring out the 90's coups for comparison
CAN WE STOP WITH THE DAMN LIGHT BARS AND BE CREATIVE FOR ONCE OMFG
I feel like they are gonna do a baby nsx, assuming they give it rear steering I can forgive the hybrid system, but it outside of that they was fine giving it the 1.5 turbo and 220+ horsepower
I was excited. But it looks like it’s going to be underpowered and not offered in manual. So… yeah 😒
im just grateful to see a honda coupe back and looks okay but wait n see how itll turn out
Would've been so cool if they effectively did what they did in the Gen 1 insight and gave us that ultra rare combo of manual transmission and hybrid.
Profit.
Much cheaper car = much bigger market.
I’m still waiting for the 3000 GT crossover
i wonder if this is related to the lack of a civic coupe?
Lile the didn't spend time devoplong a nother trim when this was coming.
Can they not make something like a lotus? Affordable, rear engine and fun?
I honestly reeeeally like its design, but whats under the hood matters...
Side and rear view reminds me of the Laguna Coupe that was sold in Europe in the 2000s
It looks great. Best looking design from Honda/Acura since the original NSX. Most Honda designs have been plain and even terrible from Acura.
Why you want AWD for? Lol
Yep same with the newer nsx
I'm really into this car... the design looks dope!!! ♥️♥️🔥🔥 plus no doubts on Hondas driving dynamics
But this prelude is more prelude than people are accounting for
They should’ve just slapped in the two versions of the 2.0T engine they have
Lower trim- 2.0T from the 2022 accord sport 2.0T
Higher trim - Civic Type R 2.0T
So it just gonna be a slightly sporty modern version of EU Honda insight and CR-Z
It looks like they're aiming to compete with the 400z? Similar design and segment.
I love the design actually. Honda doesn’t need designs with crazy lines to sell. People look for reliability on Hondas.
I'm getting more MR-2/Lotus vibes from this than anything else. Not blown away by the design, but for Honda these days it's pretty good.
Because a normal 4 cylinder would have to be turboed and would be unresponsive and slow. hybrid power is better than a choked out turbo four
Why does the front look so like… overhangy, like that front overhang looks massive
Why are u always doing that honda makes a decision yall say it's the wrong decision the car becomes a success and best seller then yall start liking the car.its the same damn cycle. Yall said the said for the integra and that top seller ppl want a hybrid 2 door and the og preludes were normal everyday cars not supercars geez
I see only 3 cars in the reference styling the Toyota Camry or Prius and the Porsche Boxster fused together lol
if it only had 80% of the original prelude design, id be super excited.
You are not excited does not mean general consumers do not like it.
the front is just the 2025 camry wtf
I’d like to see you do a review on the Lexus LC 500.
