@@KirkKreifels but it doesn’t make any sense. Why do I have to go to literally the luxury version of Honda just to get what I want that sounds like a marketing issue sounds like they’re trying to pull more money out of you just to get a manual transmission and that’s very bad for enthusiast cause it forces enthusiast to do something that they probably don’t wanna do just for a manual transmission that is sad for the car car community seriously
This powertrain has no transmission; the electric motors are mated to the driving wheels via fixed gear ratio. Since there's no "automatic transmission", there's no hope of simply replacing it with a manual transmission. Sad for sure, but manuals are relinquished to a now defunct powertrain. There's always hope for simulated manuals similar to what Toyota is attempting to do but that's not for me at all. The manual lever isn't physically connected to anything. At that point, I'd much rather have a classic sports car on the side for the occasional "pure" drive, and keep my electrified daily driver for the bulk of my driving.
Honda hybrid is basically an EV, ICE acts like a generator until you reach highway speed/top gear then a clutch closes and ICE drives the wheels. The rest of the time its an EV with a generator. Toyota, Honda, Hyundai all do hybrids vastly different.
@DJ.1001 Civic hybrid only has Sport Mode, not S+ mode. I don't think they're similar, based on American reviews of the Civic. The American Civic hybrid reviewers praised the nice, firm electric motor launches, but they basically said, the simulated shifts and fake engine sounds at higher speeds and the general lack of responsive feelings, created an effect that was pretty bland and tame. One reviewer said that it would quickly become annoying and he would probably wish for a way to turn off the fake shifts. This Prelude reviewer appears to show something very different. The engine rev sounds are not fake. The engine is actually tacking up which causes the car to jerk or pull when it fake shifts. The reviewer seemed to love the realistic, seat of the pants feeling of the "shifts." I didn't get the impression that he wished he could turn them off. Neither transmission actually "shifts" in the technical sense of the word. However, the Civic shifts are much faker, because the engine rev sounds are completely fake and are piped into the cabin through sound speakers, therefore, the car cannot have any seat of the pants feel to it when it fake "shifts." In contrast, the Prelude engine actually hits preprogrammed higher rev settings and with Honda software magic, they can use those increased revs and torque to simulate "shifts" in such a way that they both sound and feel very real. I'm not a car expert nor am I a Honda expert. I'm only stating my understanding of what I think is happening, based on what I've heard different reviewers say.

Ive said this numerous times, the prelude was always a place to " test bed" tech. This is no different, although I would always love to see a pure manual with a turbo 4 cyl either 2.0 or 2.4l and it be truly raw. I believe those times have sadly passed this car and the age of hybrid has stepped in. I am glad to see this hybrid is not a lame version that we have seen in the past and atleast settles the nerves as far as it being a dud car. I really think Honda needs to make a "heritage" or "purist" version and drop a turbo manual even if they still somehow keep the hybrid systems. Imagine a 2.0 turbo 6 speed prelude with hybrid assist making it "awd" on demand. Lets call it ohhhh idk... Type S? One can dream!
As a former owner of the '97 Type SH manual, I promised myself I would heavily look into a Prelude if it ever comes back... and now it has... and it makes a ton of sense to not be a Civic Si or Type R competitor... that being said... the manual nerd in me wishes for a manual Prelude... I'd dump my money on a manual Prelude almost immediately... but I recognize the times have changed. A Prelude buyer buys for passionate driving, not for rational commuting IMHO
The S+ trademark was previously in the CRZ. In that car, it means more electric boost to pass on the highway if there is battery juice. Could they use other existing trademarks for different mechanisms, such as EarthDreams, VTEC, or ECON?
Not that I don’t want another proper FWD manual ICE coupe, but it would be fun to see Toyota make their own version of this car with the new Celica and do it better with their more powerful 5th generation hybrid drivetrain.
My Honda CRZ was amazing, still have it but will likely have to sell it. Extremely responsive for 130hp, super fun on some backroads. I’m hoping the prelude will be just as fun, if not more. The CRZ is super underrated, really a “have to experience it yourself” kind of car to get a good gauge on how it drives. Almost every review of it is just some boring guy doing a straight line commute and saying it’s not sporty, without actually going down some windy roads. S+ in the CRZ primes the engine for Vtech and allows full boost right off the bat. More like a passing button but was great for exiting corners for a little more fun.
Honda new gen hybrids havent had the delay for years now. The are driven by a direct drive electric motor that makes roughly 160hp and 230ft/lb. The engine drives a generator that sends energy to the motor and the battery. Any "shifting" you feel is artificial. The engine changes revs to give you the sense of running through gears but in reality its just spinning a generator. The engine can couple to the wheels via a clutch and a geartrain, giving you a drive ratio similar to a final gear in a typical transmission. The engine coupling only occurs over roughly 40mph and at certain driving conditions (sustained speed and moderate accel/decel).
yeah for all people, it will not have a manual transmission, the concept of this car is a highly efficient sport car.... and yeah there is no transmission in this, it's direct drive. which is kinda of strange when you think about it, but make sense for efficiency.
The car was designed in North America and was first shown at the Los Angeles Motor Show. It got the most press in the region that they expect to sell the car. Nissan did the same thing with the GT-R and the Z, especially the Z, which wore the Fairlady Z emblem on the trunk in all of Nissan’s press images despite the car being left hand drive.
What lack of response? I have a Civic hybrid and is faster than my Corolla's dad. Well, this Prelude is a fantastic sports car but yeah, I prefer the functionality of my Civic, much bigger and comfortable. Really happy with this model. 3 months since I bought it and I feel it like new everyday.
I think you're exaggerating - the latest Honda hybrids all fake shifts and they don't drone at a pinned redline unless you're brake torquing. This is a enhancement but it's not all that different.
Thanks for sharing. This is exciting, just saw news in Japan that Honda is merging Nissan, imaging Vtec+Turbo+Variable compression ratio tech and hybrid altogether.
The one thing I didn't like about my previous 2021 Honda Accord 2.0T Sport transmission was the gear hunting that would happen from time to time, even when driving in sport mode. I mean the 10 speed was a god send in ATs but if this Prelude has a way better response in gear changing and hopefully minimal or no gear hunting.
I don't think I'm swapping my '97 Type SH for this car. But if they put basically the same drive line from the Civic Si in this, I might consider it. I bought my Prelude specifically because I wanted a stick. Also, there's so much fun to be had with a high redline. I'm really drawn to the GR86 because it, like my '97, revs to over 7,000. One reason people still talk about the AP1 S2k because it revs to 9,000. The C30 and K20 are legendary and also rev to the freaking moon. They don't make fizzy engines anymore, and it's really a shame.
I’m so happy that this video literally proves that it will not come with a manual transmission, which was my point to a lot of people on Instagram and on TH-cam this car will not come with a train with with a manual transmission. It will not there’s no reason for this car to come with the manual transmission and if it is a hybrid, there is no reason for that.
I was going to buy a new car in 2024! I’m glad I waited cause this is sick. Still have to wait until I test drive to see how I truly feel but man this is cool as fuck.
Honda is not notorious for price gouging at their dealerships though, the type r in this current and last gen didn’t have crazy mark ups like their competitors
Very interested in this car. If it just ends up being basically a 2 door civic hybrid with a sport tune(like an SI) I would still be happy. Just need to keep the price down. 35K seems like a good price to me. Since the hybrid civic is right at 30k.
i wonder if both powertrains will work exclusively on the front axle, it would be huge for traction control if the electric powertrain could deliver power individually to each rear wheel, but on a second thought, it would be a feature probably reserved for a higher end car, rather, simple delivery of power to the rear wheels using exclusiveley the electric system could be a good way to achieve awd without having to redesign the fwd transmission
@fortheloveofnoise in all honesty, when i had the 92 Prelude, it seemed like a rwd platform fit the style of the car better. Long hood and whatnot. When the frs/brz came out later on in 2010s, it was like the Prelude package I really wanted. The GR86 is a great 35k car, no question asked there. Such a great chassis and perfect size
I hope they understand that this goes nowhere with only 200hp. If they wanna win against gr86, that is different car for different people, they need to provide at least 240hp and 400Nm
Kirk, I have a feeling that this is gonna be an electric power only to move the car and the engine is use to generate power for the electric motor! What do you think?
Been driving the hybrid civic for over a year and the delay is really bad. Not only that there's a long delay, the duration of the delay is also inconsistant. The only way to drive it in a more spirited way is quick tabbing on the accelerator as if you're driving an old turbo car.
It's a very pretty car, but there are still things that shock me. There's an obvious disharmony between the front and rear seats. On the other hand, I hope the dashboard will be changed and made more modern and sleeker, like the bodywork. It's not a question of mixing everything up: the Prelude and the Civic must be different and each has its own identity, not just on the outside !!
Looks like a ton of fun. Hybrids have been rather boring. So this is a great compromise between engagement and economy. As my brother remarked, he said " i didn't bust my ass for 40 years working to drive a Prius".
Toyota fan here, but I love the Prelude, and with the new one don't you worry a bit, because Honda knows how to make a sports car, NSX, S2000, Civic Type R, their expertise will translate into this new Prelude to make it a very good car.

A Prelude buyer buys for passionate driving, not for rational commuting IMHO
this is a civic coupe badges prelude
The S+ trademark was previously in the CRZ. In that car, it means more electric boost to pass on the highway if there is battery juice. Could they use other existing trademarks for different mechanisms, such as EarthDreams, VTEC, or ECON?
I was just about to comment this
Not that I don’t want another proper FWD manual ICE coupe, but it would be fun to see Toyota make their own version of this car with the new Celica and do it better with their more powerful 5th generation hybrid drivetrain.
Kirk has said Celica is coming back with a new 2.0 turbo engine. Arrived MR2 also coming back with that engine.
Glad you found link Kirk. If search his older videos also drove Lexus LB-X which won't be coming to US.. "sigh"
LBX RR destroys this turd.
UPDATES : Honda and Nissan is in talk of business integration.
Whatever happened to the Yamaha electric motors you discussed a couple of years ago? They seemed as if they were game changers.
I wish this was based off the Accord instead and be a slightly larger coupe. Hybrid powertrain is good I've driven it. Bonus points if AWD.
it’s a civic
Can't wait to see what the Acura (RSX?) version will look like!
The pushbutton was on the 2.0 civics. I wouldn’t be surprised if there isnt actually push button for the North American market.
why is the Japanese model left hand drive?
The car was designed in North America and was first shown at the Los Angeles Motor Show. It got the most press in the region that they expect to sell the car. Nissan did the same thing with the GT-R and the Z, especially the Z, which wore the Fairlady Z emblem on the trunk in all of Nissan’s press images despite the car being left hand drive.
🇺🇸 Trump Effect
I wonder how long before someone k swaps one these
About 5 minutes after the release date😂
If awd is available or eawd im coping idc
One more reason to get a manual mustang while I still can
loll no one is cross-shopping a mustang with anything from Honda.
@@ThePilotGear it’s funny because a famous Italian youtuber sold his typer r for a mustang 😂
This is a enhancement but it's not all that different.
the japanese youtuber and even kirk himself talked about how without S+ the shift it is less exagerrated like the current models
Thanks for sharing. This is exciting, just saw news in Japan that Honda is merging Nissan, imaging Vtec+Turbo+Variable compression ratio tech and hybrid altogether.
I love the 2 door hatch but I have concerns about this new motor, will it be reliable enough to spend my money on?
Think outside the box , this is a test for the newest hybrid type r … the reason it’s simulating gears to act 1-1 with a manual type r shift.
Can't wait.
Wow huge applause for Honda, the European Brands can´t do Autom. transmissions where shifts that fast 👏
The middle shifter buttons look like Acura buttons from a TLX or a RDX, possible Acura model later?? 7:05
current hondas already have it. acura and honda is the same
I was going to buy a new car in 2024! I’m glad I waited cause this is sick. Still have to wait until I test drive to see how I truly feel but man this is cool as fuck.
Great! They will sell it for 60,000 in my country now 😅
Manuals are fun and all, but everyone hating on paddle shifters haven’t tried ‘em. They’re incredibly fun and engaging.
They’re ok, manual still more engaging and fun
@@mogulme6190that’s subjective, manuals aren’t any more fun or engaging to drive than an automatic. It all comes down to driver preference.
wen it comes to Honda manuals nothin is better
@@DriverX-JDM Honda manuals are the peak of manuals fr. Underrated brand.
Tried um, hate um, im in my 20s, not some bitter boomer.
I’m all for a hybrid type R
excited😮
Sadly pricing going make it fail🙄
only in ur dreams
Nice story ESL
Honda is not notorious for price gouging at their dealerships though, the type r in this current and last gen didn’t have crazy mark ups like their competitors
@@AdrianHernandez-ok6mzsay what? It’s incredibly difficult to find a dealer who won’t mark up a type r for 5k to 15k over MSRP. It’s insane.
I'd actually consider buying this as a daily driver.
Very interested in this car. If it just ends up being basically a 2 door civic hybrid with a sport tune(like an SI) I would still be happy. Just need to keep the price down. 35K seems like a good price to me. Since the hybrid civic is right at 30k.
That's quick
i wonder if both powertrains will work exclusively on the front axle, it would be huge for traction control if the electric powertrain could deliver power individually to each rear wheel, but on a second thought, it would be a feature probably reserved for a higher end car, rather, simple delivery of power to the rear wheels using exclusiveley the electric system could be a good way to achieve awd without having to redesign the fwd transmission
Faker shifts than a CVT is impressive honestly
We used to have 3.0 v6 accord hybrids with stick shift.
What do you think about Nissan and Honda merging together?
As a 92 Prelude owner back in 2002 through 2006. I love seeing this come back and with an ICE powertrain!
Please be $35k🤗
If you want that price....you gonna need to go for a BRZ/GR86
@fortheloveofnoise in all honesty, when i had the 92 Prelude, it seemed like a rwd platform fit the style of the car better. Long hood and whatnot. When the frs/brz came out later on in 2010s, it was like the Prelude package I really wanted. The GR86 is a great 35k car, no question asked there. Such a great chassis and perfect size
GR corolla price
shifter is from the 2022 honda accord 2.0T
I hope they understand that this goes nowhere with only 200hp. If they wanna win against gr86, that is different car for different people, they need to provide at least 240hp and 400Nm
So Civic 2 doors in the 11th gen is back, except it's called Prelude? Got it.
Ya that's what I was thinking.
Kirk, I have a feeling that this is gonna be an electric power only to move the car and the engine is use to generate power for the electric motor! What do you think?
I want it in the blue camo color 😂
No physical shifter is sad
Would be nice with gated shifters for the manuals
I hope they some how get some manual options for it
is there a point of a turbo hybrid if the engine doesnt power the wheels ?
Have a feeling we're going to be getting an Integra coupe very shortly
Americans only want big vehicles, I really want to have a current generation of JDM Odyssey hybrid, so many features we don't get here in the states.
I am American. I prefer small sports cars and small muscle cars.
I watched the Japanese video. The s+ seems to mimic the NSX type s DCT by using electric motors to control revs !
I would consider one of it was a naturally aspirares engine with a manual box
Looks like a ton of fun. Hybrids have been rather boring. So this is a great compromise between engagement and economy. As my brother remarked, he said " i didn't bust my ass for 40 years working to drive a Prius".
no BRZ or GR86 is a ton of fun, this is a fwd civic
THIS IS FUCKING AWSOME. THIS IS WHAT I WANTED HYBRIDS TO GO TO
Toyota fan here, but I love the Prelude, and with the new one don't you worry a bit, because Honda knows how to make a sports car, NSX, S2000, Civic Type R, their expertise will translate into this new Prelude to make it a very good car.
I miss Prelude TV ads with Ayrton Senna
Damn, the push-button shifter is a deal-breaker for me. 😢
