  • David Martin, author of the fantastic Gettysburg, July 1 joined us on the phone for his first of many-to-come interviews about one of his books. Since Matt is working on the July 1 narrative, he selfishly decided to have him on to talk about the writing of this book and the day itself. This book also appears on the reading list for aspiring licensed battlefield guides.

I'm proud to call Dr. Martin my brother in The SUVCW, Department of NJ. What a delight to discover this podcast and see him as a guest!

I was at that 150th with Dr. Martin in Gettysburg. I also volunteer with him at Monmouth Battlefield.

This book got me back into studying the Civil War in way more detail than I should. Loved it.

Coincidentally, I just bought this book last week! Very timely guys! Still lean towards the thought that THE definitive 1st day book is yet unwritten. Hoping for a good read here this coming winter (got 6 lined up)...

History is history....men on both sides died and i personally think both sides need markers on battle fields not to glorify but to remember the history

Park is fine. Its accurate enough. If you visit gettysburg and can't figure out what it is, what it means, and how to act, then a word like "park" ain't the problem. Nah mean?

I enjoyed the interview but thought there would be more push back on the monuments discussion. All that history and work gone because all the sudden we decide to listen to the loud minority? Sure glad you guys weren't on little round top.

We let our guests speak their mind. We don't pose as experts, but students. So we listen and consider all points of view. We're trying to avoid another civil war. Ya know?

I understand the format of the show is not as such where you debate your guess. It's a good show and I enjoyed very much so keep up the good work. The Monuments subject just troubles me deeply.
