- For months, now, listeners have asked us to do another biographical Ask A Gettysburg Guide. We've finally done another. This time, it's about the controversial-in-life-and-death Danial Edgar Sickles. And who better to lead us through this man's colorful life? Well, none other than the Gettysburg's Licensed Battlefield Guide Force's very own, Jim Hessler, of course.
We hope you enjoy this debut episode of season 5.

I listen to all of these to go to sleep, bedtimes stories for me
That’s my favorite compliment. There are only certain things I can listen to fall asleep.
I could use a sleep story
The things I listen too while I drift away, are sacred to me. This however, I needed to hang on every word
The background laughter makes these interviews sooo casual and relatable. Feel like you are sitting around a fire with these guys. Great job and very informative.
Glad you like them! And I’m glad you “get it”. I always enjoyed learning in a casual and fun setting.
This was one of the best episodes Matt. Having more fun with it is much better than a completely dry retelling of history. Gary teasing Tim recently and the jokes between Jim and yourself make the show better.
Thank you. And, for the record, and in all humility, I know 😀
Wow! It was ok for Slippery. Sickles can be so low to introduce a whole to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, but his poor wife has an affair that he blows up! Sickles is a douch. This is an awesome show!
Yeah, he was a douche. Thank you! Glad you like it
Douche is to kind for Sickles!
Great episode! And please continue to have fun during the discussions. That's one of the reasons I listen. We don't want things to get too stuffy.
An excellent episode! Matt and Jim are hilarious together all the while presenting a very interesting history.
Thank you!
Why have I not known about you guys until now?
You are nailing it. I’m loving it. I’m laughing - my wife is saying “it’s not possible to be laughing at two historians” lol
but I am and it’s great! Thank you, Clay from York, Maine.
Thanks, Clay! I don’t know what took you so long. Probably the algorithm, because we’ve been around for five years. But, better to be late to the party than to have never shown up at all! Welcome aboard
first photo I saw of Sickles.... I said... oh, that guy needs crutches !!!!
Lol
1:02 "Wow the balls on this guy"😂
Many people have probably had this reaction to Sickles.
No doubt
Right on , loved by his men, brave and patriotic, obnoxious and despicable to most, we could use a politician like him today
I love the fun you have with history, what do we have without some humor.. I am Canadian tho, and we've taken some jabs from this channel.. But, I love military history and some day soon I will visit the battlefield.. 👍
Oh we love our Canadian cousins. We just like to poke fun. I shit on my own home state on the show lol I agree though, humor is important in life. Now more than ever
Listened to the podcast on my flight from Belfast to London this evening. Was in Gettysburg 5 years ago and remember going to the Diorama and being terrified by the Dan Sickles waxwork staring down at me from the ceiling - wonder if it's still there;-)
It's still there! Lol! I just visited the diorama for the first time (after numerous Gettysburg trips) and I had a similar reaction to Old Dan. You catch him out of the corner of your eye, and it's like "wtf?!", before you realize what you're actually looking at. 😅
He’s a scary man…in life or in effigy
@@addressinggettysburg Hes waiting up there thinking, " Will someone PLEASE come out and tell me where I'm supposed to deploy already"! I once swore I heard him mumble, " Maybe thats the scoundrel diddling my old lady"! I bolted...
Lol. I'm glad I wasn't the only one freaked out by that. The question is,was it paid for by those misappropriated funds;-)
Just started this one: I have my opinion, and will be interested to see how and if that changes by the end.
Good luck to you!
@@addressinggettysburg Indeed...
Well, a more nuanced personality than popular opinion would have it. Unsurprisingly.
And I know not to eat chocolate whilst public-speaking now, too.
A good discussion.
As usual, a great show! Thanks!!
Another great episode!
Dude....Daniel Sickles Pillow Case😂
I literally spit out my coffee 😅
I did too 😁
Well done… as always. Thank you
Thank you too!
Sickles moving forward then being forced back on the attack created a false sense of weakness in the center of the union line. Hence his decision on the 3rd day, which led to union victory.
Hmmm. A “false sense”?
Jim Hessler using the ol' "I can see the reflection on your glasses' trick.
Lol he caught me
I’ve never heard anyone talk about what would’ve happened had Longstreet been in position a little earlier in the day and launched his attack while Sickles was in the process of moving forward. The war may have ended July 2nd.
My feeling is that he might have succeeded in rolling up the flank. For a while. But all those Union reinforcements that ended up saving the day in reality, are still there in this fantasy scenario. So I think they still would have lost the battle, still would have lost the war; the only thing that would be different would be the battle lines would be in different places on the maps we use today. Also, we’ve talked about this on several shows. Not as a show topic but as an aside. I couldn’t tell you which one, but if you keep exploring our channel you should find them. Thanks for listening!
Sickles was instrumental in inadvertently arranging the various sub-battles and vignettes on the 2nd day of Gettysburg, memorable epic moments like...the Wheatfield, the Peach Orchard, Devils Den, sacrifice of the 1st MN, etc.
yes. by disobeying his superior lol
@@addressinggettysburg - Sickles reminds me of that 'petulant uncle' on a family camping trip that is not happy with his assigned camping spot...and ruins it for everybody else.
I often wonder if Longstreets attack would have been successful if Sickles had stayed in his assigned position...his move forced not just Meade and Hancock to alter their defense plan, it also forced Longstreet to alter his attack plan.
Hahaha good one
Sickles!
Another one of my favorite guests.
Jim’s curiosity and sense of humor fits perfectly with show.
Thanks.
Yeah I have fun when he comes on.

Someone should have asked about the Tipton-Sickles feud!
Argh! I was gonna but I assumed you weren’t going to listen to this one 😉
I have Jim's Sickles book waiting on deck. I've had it a year (sorry Jim) but I got alot of reading queued up! Let's see...listen to this or read the book?...
12 out of 10 doctors agree, it’s listen, then read.
@@addressinggettysburg To follow up...I just finished Jim's book on Dan and cannot recommend it enough! I plowed through it quickly even while rereading sections. Not going to get into a revue here but it is one the best and well written books I've read and give a hat tip to Jim! (Peach Orchard book was good also) I believe Savas Beatie carries it if anyone is interested. Now, if I can only find Jim and Waynes Pickett book...
Guys, do you think Sickles voted for Lincoln or McClellan in 1864?
Great question!
As Gen. Heth would say, he got his dander up. He couldn't help himself...
Lol
George H Thomas General. I wish we new more on him
Unfortunately, he wasn’t here at Gettysburg. I’m sure some other podcast out there has covered him though. We just have to keep it to Gettysburg…mostly.
@@addressinggettysburg 10/4 . just so little is out on Gen Thomas. Thanks
Look, he wasnt THAT loved. How many GAR posts were named after him? Thats a serious question, i couldnt find any, but that doesnt mean there wasnt one
42
@addressinggettysburg 42 total! I looked through all of PA's records and couldn't see one, but its like reading a phone book-so I may have missed one. My hypothesis was that he MAY be well loved, but polarizing enough to be out voted during the Chartering process of individual Posts. How on earth did you get that number? A friend wants to know 😏
Fun Fact, Dan Sickles is actually my great great grandfather! I have footage of my Great Grandparents and my Grandparents visiting his memorial!
That’s cool!
Does anyone see the irony that SICKLES thrives under HOOKER? Sorry, had to say it.
Lol
@@addressinggettysburg Thought the same thing. whoremonger sic I cringe every time I hear GENERAL sickles
Whats all that heavy breathing going on there
We were very excited
Dan was a charicture that we all secretly want to be.
I think you might be right
grow up!
You first
Key violated Sickles' marriage! Give me a break! Sickles violated his own marriage first multiple times. This is one reason why I don't like the guy. Yuck
