    This video demonstrates my ONLY problem with the Defiant's design, illustrated perfectly at 4:20 talking about the carpet. The navigator has a great view of the view screen. The CAPTAIN on the other hand, has a great view of the navigator's head. I wonder how many times Sisko asked Dax to move her head so he could see the huge space battle in front of him.
    Also, Nog has blue fingernails.

    • @JunkBallMedia

      Workplace ergonomics are big too. If Dax gets a standing station, Sisko is screwed.

    • @EnigmaticPenguin
      @EnigmaticPenguin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      We finally know why Sisko assigned Nog to that station - he's only 5 feet tall. Combined with the slightly raised platform of the captain's chair and he has a clear view.

    • @ThreadBomb
      @ThreadBomb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that final carpet design shows that they wanted to put the captain's chair on a pedestal. Problem was, the set was built very low, so they'd have to extend all the walls upward to compensate.

    • @NeonVisual
      @NeonVisual 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The captain's seat is raised, but so was the helm. I guess the captain could have used a side screen like in the runabouts, but it was supposed to be a war ship specifically to attack the Borg, so it make sense that the helm has the best view of where the ship is going, there's not much point hailing a borg cube.

    I feel like the Neo-Defiant's purple aesthetic was a recommendation by Avery Brooks. It's no secret that DS9 often highlighted African and African-American culture and that Brooks often pushed for such. Since purple is often cited as being representative of royalty in Africa, it wouldn't surprise me if that was intended as a subtle nod. Especially given that purple was never before (or since) so prominent in Starfleet interior design.
    I've always liked this iteration of the Defiant interior.

      Kirk Jacobson What about the FX to make them appear in the first place? I don’t recall if they edited around that but for a bunch of shots or not. Another budget move is to do the viewscreen as a tight close up thus removing the need to composite the scene, just use framing to make it clear that one half of the conversation is being played out on a screen.

    • @biggles1852
      @biggles1852 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wondered about that. But wasn't the whole holo thing just a gag leading up to the big reveal of "OMG that person's not a holo, he/she's actually on the bridge!" Or am I thinking of a different show?

    • @shingshongshamalama
      @shingshongshamalama 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The whole point of the holocommunicator was to actually have the actors perform in the scene. When they do viewscreens, they basically have to record whoever's on the screen separately. Which makes giving a good performance... difficult.

    • @Tuning3434
      @Tuning3434 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@shingshongshamalama If I recall correctly, the holocommunicator was introduced cause the producers thought it would be a good way to make scene's more engaging, but it nobody can beat a good viewscreen scene. On the same point, did you know that during Wrath of Khan, Shatner and Montalbán recorded their scene's separately, months apart, without even meeting each other on set (the Reliant bridge is a redress of the Enterprise).

    Actually back then the main shots of the focused ship image was done with film photography and they film to add the extra effects, shadow light, glow of warp nacelles/buzzard scoop. then they would be all then layered to give the impression that it's an actual life size space ship and not a metre long model.

    the rl reason for dropping the holo communicators stems from gene's reason to use view screens in the first place. to save on the budget. when they did the holocommunicator effect, they found they were limited on what angles and all they could use, AND it was way more expensive than using a viewscreen

    I think the second Defiant was supposed to be an NCC registry instead of NX. However, since they were going to reuse shots from previous episodes in the finale that's when they made it the NX version.

    Also of note; in the final episode of DS9 during the montage. we see the stock footage of the USS Sitak and Majestic being destroyed inter-cut with another re-use of a crewman being killed by rocks on a Defiant-class bridge implying that this design was in use on Miranda's as well. Sadly, the better carpet went down with the ship.

    The holo-communicator isn't seen past it's initial use in For the Uniform, when the Defiant bridge is briefly seen two episodes later the small bench is conveniently still slid into the rear wall but the prop is gone having been relocated to Sisko's office for use in Doctor Bashir, I Presume. When the Defiant bridge is next seen which I think is in Children of Time the never (from memory) used table returns.

      You had to wait 4 years for me to tell you that the Battle of Sector 001 pre-dates the destruction of the original Defiant at the hands of the Breen by like 2 years. And that there was a whole Thing about it behind the scenes with the production staff of DS9 being absolutely pissed that the First Contact scriptwriters wanted to destroy the Defiant, but DS9 itself brushed over the entire battle with a couple of lines from Sisko, and entirely ignored any battle damage to the Defiant itself.

    Just one question. Was the defiant more advanced than the Jem'Hadar fighters that it fought? I mean, despite hearing about how deadly the Jem'Hadar were, every time we saw them fighting in space, except the first time, they just get dominated. The defiant is seen on screen destroying half a dozen ships at a time, hell, even the Klingon Birds of Prey are shown destroying several dominion ships before making it out still intact. I mean, I am just wondering if the gap in technology between the Alpha Quadrent, and the dominion is actually all that much since we are typically shown ships like the defiant dominating the dominion.

In season 7 when Quark thinks he's becoming Grand nagus you'll see he also has green toenails, and that liquidator that he doesn't like also has green fingernails. And you forgot to mention there was 3 defiant classes, NX Defiant, USS Valiant used by Red Squadron, then Sao Paulo renamed, USS Defiant. You forgot to mention the stripes on the wall carpet in the council's next to captain's chair all different on the new Defiant. Plus the new Defiant did not have that holographic communication pad, replaced with the engineering table similar to the table scene on Enterprise D main engineering.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marcus W That’s how it normally goes though, names get re used often on starfleet ships but they rarely are accompanied by their previous numbers. The Enterprise seems to be the single exception and that’s why they get the A B C D E suffix, to avoid confusion.
      We know that names get re used because we have seen several ships with the same name over the years, I theorize that they also re use registry numbers often, seeing as how some Constitution class ships have numbers that should predate the class significantly it makes sense that a notable ship can be honored by assigning its name or number to a new ship. But for obvious reasons the name and number are best left separate down the line.

    • @Marcus51090
      @Marcus51090 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DS9's Defiant had a different registry number (NX-74205) to the TOS ship. There are countless ships that have old names but when the registry number is carried over on special ships like the Enterprise, that's when we get "A", "B" etc. The true Defiant-A is the Sao Paulo.
