Sr. Patrick Stewart talked about the uniforms in a recent interview for Picard. He talked about the singlet uniforms being so tight that they hurt the actors backs. This was a major concern for the studio. Presumably because they were worried about guild law suits. They changed the uniforms to the 2 part ones to address this.

Different explanations and reasons were given to (and have been repeated by) different sources.
But the offensive smell is something they almost all agree on.
Remember that this is the show which had cat poop on the bridge set carpets - that nobody dealt with for a couple _years_ - so I'm sure those clammy clingy polyester uniforms were carefully cleaned/disinfected after every use and I'm sure they were always carefully stored in separate sealed containers.

I think one reason why they went with the DS9 uniforms was to keep up with continuity. Voyager premiered during season 3 of DS9 and also had the same uniforms, so it wouldn't make sense for the Enterprise crew to suddenly have a different uniform from the rest of Starfleet. Also, from a production standpoint, having a few DS9 uniforms probably saved on costume budget, but from an in-universe perspective it showed that Starfleet was still in the process of making the switch-over when the Nexus event occurred, and senior officers clearly had priority when it came to getting the new design, which I think is pretty realistic.

    - Redesigned sets

    - Night lighting
    - Upgraded computer sounds
    - New combadge
    - Different uniforms
    - Loads of extras
    - Data's emotion chip
    - Even the ship looked more detailed in flybys
It made no sense. No revamp would be that drastic within such a short space of time. Also, those black Starfleet uniforms were meant for deep space assignments (I thought), hence the DS9 crew had been using them years before they were introduced to the Federation flagship. The DS9 crew also reverted back to the TNG uniform whenever they visited Earth and in the episode Visitor, Captain Nog was wearing a TNG uniform, something like 20 years into the future.

I always liked the gray one they used in Star Trek First Contact and the uniform in Star Trek Enterprise with the NX-01. The blue one in Enterprise just made more sense. It was practical. I felt the other uniforms where way too flimsy. When going on an away mission most of the uniforms where ridiculous. If they got in a scrape or had to do something strenuous which would easily happen on an away mission the uniforms would shred.

7:51 those are darts in the armpits, and one of the first weird things I noticed when re-watching recently.
And overall this is really interesting - I had assumed, from the random mixing of TNG and DS9 designs in the film, that the costume budget had been tiny and stretched until it broke. To now find out that there was supposed to be a whole new set of costumes - and, moreover, costumes that you could give to the principle cast while leaving the extras in the old ones without it really showing - that never got off the ground makes so much more sense.
Nothing explains why Picard went back to his old uniform for the last scene on the crashed bridge, though. It's like they were trying to point out the discrepancy.
And were they filming concurrently with DS9? Why couldn't they temporarily tack Meany's sleeves up a couple of inches for Burton?

I had this experience that made me feel like I was some sort off Star Trek show. When I visited my home country back in August after 6 years of being away I was surprised to see 6 different uniforms in the public education system of my country. 2 years prior to my visit the government established 5 different uniforms that were going to be used in the different regions of my country but the government failed to educate the children in which one was the correct one according to the region the lived that’s why they ended up with a classroom of people wearing red polo-shirts, blue polo-shirts, green, purple, yellow and the prior blue button shirt that was used before. All the 5 uniforms consists of a white collar and short sleeves while the prior one was like a normal short-sleeve button shirt but all blue.

As much as using TNG and DS9 uniforms in Generations was annoying and looked awful (like the ill fit of Frakes wearing Avery Brooks’ uniform) it was preferable to those unused uniforms. Even the grandad high waistlines of the All Good Things/Visitor/Endgame future uniforms looked better, probably because they were always wore by older versions of the regular characters. The new commbadge that would be used until the end of Voyager is my favourite though.
The bit about Burton and Meany made me laugh. The uniform was made to fit Meany, but he nearly always wore it with the sleeves rolled up. Burton puts it on for like one scene and he wears it sleeves down so it’s obvious it’s too big! Roll the sleeves back up man!
I assume that McFadden and Sirtis never wore a DS9 uniform was because neither of them were anywhere close to the same shape as Terry Farrell...
Admiral Janeway’s uniform was meant to be from the pre-TNG era (2350s, so the no collar fits with the TNG season 1 uniforms. Just ignore the 2370s commbadge....
I’m glad they didn’t do any first contacts in Generations. Imagine bringing important potential Federation members up to the ship and everyone is wearing random uniforms. You’d think Starfleet would want some uniformity in their uniforms, at least on their flagship. It was understandable on other occasions, like starships visiting DS9. That would never would have happened if Jellico was in command!!

    • @JustJay1281
      @JustJay1281 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually ill fitting and multiple Uniforms are not uncommon, even in real world military's. I remember many receiving uniforms that didn't exactly fit properly, I also remember when the Canadian military switched from the olive drabs to the cadpat. Most of the time what happened was that once the olive drabs wore out, they were issued cadpat. so you had some in cadpat and some in Olive drab. Topper of that is this was also the time when they switch all the elements over to one uniform, for a while you had a real hodgepodge of uniforms. This was done again when they switched from the old gear to the moderately water proof gortex.

First, I absolutely love your work. Your videos are some of the most entertaining, informative on the TH-cams! Next - a technicality... Worf DID wear a DS9-style uniform in Generations...in a deleted scene! Remember toward the end, when we see a shuttle about to land to pick Picard up? Well, in a filmed deleted scene, Geordi and Worf actually disembark the shuttle to talk to the captain before picking him up...and yup...Worf was in the alternate uniform!!! Wild, isn't it?! Keep up the GREAT content!!!

The one thing I didn't quite understand about Generations is why half the crew had the newer (DS9) style uniforms, while others had the older style uniforms. It doesn't seem like there was a specific reason for this, except for possibly while PIcard was on his "away" mission on Veridian III and while La Forge was being interrogated by Soren, the rest of the crew got new uniforms from starfleet. I'm sure it was intention in some way and was meant perhaps to mean a transition from the old ST TNG to the newer series (DS9). Even in a few of the DS9 eposides we can see O'Brien and Worf wearing the older uniform styles (black shoulder/collar) especially during the seasons where the two shows overlapped.

I NEVER understood why the crew would wear TNG uniforms, then change. Apparently both Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden did not transisiton to the 'DS9sies' as Gates thought it looked ugly and Sirtis just refused to wear hers. My BIGGEST gripe with the seasons 3 - 7/Generations uniforms were the cheaper one piece versions with the zip down the centre for the extras, they were saving money yes, but it did cheapen the production somewhat!

STG should have had those scrapped uniforms. They looked good. But besides being budgeted, it makes sense why some of the cast wore the DS9 uniforms as it enforces the purpose of them as they where base /station suits.
Voyager had no purpose in wearing them as they where Starship operation and should have stuck with the TNG or the purposed Generations suits.
Then again, if the Generations where used would we get the First Contact ones.
