My great Aunty who was part of the stolen generation, passed away peacefully in her sleep aged 95. I remember her singing this amazing song with us kids. Proud Yorta Yorta Woman, but also a very proud Australian woman. She was the most proud when I returned from my first tour in Iraq and went home and sang this song with her.
For those who ask : "I Am Australian" (or "We are Australian") is a popular patriotic song and was even one of the songs under consideration to replace Australian National Anthem!. It is the song commonly sung on Australia Day and New Year Eve, celebrating the diversity of Australian society and remembering its roots, written in 1987 by The Seekers. This beautiful version is by Lo-tel, Sydney based alternative rock band, from the album "Teenager of the Year" and the remix version was used by Telstra in conjunction with the sponsorship of 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Another version by Botanics, Sydney based band, was recorded and used by Telstra in their mobile coverage advertising campaign of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. For those Australians who live abroad, songs such as "I am Australian", "I Still Call Australia Home" and "Down Under" always strike a chord in the heart - so proud to be Aussies and at the same time feeling homesick.
Do you have a CD or vinyl copy of Lo-Tel's version? I've got the Telstra CD performed by Rai Thistlewayte (of Thirsty Merc) and it sounds 100% identical to this version. I've looked through the entire Lo-Tel catalogue and I can't find them recording a version of this, so is it them or Rai?
@@MaVeRiCk77 yeah it does not sound a single bit like Lo-Tel, the instrumentals of the track could well pass as a Lo-Tel song but the vocals don't sound anything like Luke Hanigan.

Akubra hat upon my head, red dirt beneath my boots and on my sunburnt skin, scared and calloused hands by my sides and a smile on my face. I scan the horizon for the rains, and for the smoke of fire. This land shaped me into the man I am today, honest, hardworking and iron willed. Through fire, flood and drought, I will prevail. I will work till I can no more, then I'll keep working. It's in my blood. This is Australia. This is my home
Here the Chords for Guitar: G Em7 We are one but we are many Cadd9 G And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream Em7 And sing with one voice Cadd9 Em7 Cadd9 Dsus4 G I am, you are, we are Australian. The verse is just G and C9 interchanging. Simple and brilliant!
The Seekers aren't bad, but this version more reflects contemporary Australia. If I lived in Australia, I'd definitely vote for this as the national anthem of Australia. :)
Jason Carpp It's a very good show (I had my doubts before ever watching it). Glad I was proven wrong. If you listen to 'This Life' for Sons of Anarchy, there's similarities. But good ones. :)

I came from the dream-time, from the dusty red soil plains I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flame. I stood upon the rocky shore, I watched the tall ships come. For forty thousand years I've been the first Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian I came upon the prison ship, bowed down by iron chains. I cleared the land, endured the lash and waited for the rains. I'm a settler, I'm a farmer's wife on a dry and barren run A convict then a free man, I became Australian. We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian I'm the daughter of a digger who sought the mother lode The girl became a woman on the long and dusty road I'm a child of the depression, I saw the good times come I'm a bushy, I'm a battler, I am Australian We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian I'm a teller of stories, I'm a singer of songs I am Albert Namatjira, I paint the ghostly gums I am Clancy on his horse, I'm Ned Kelly on the run I'm the one who waltzed Matilda, I am Australian We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian There are no words of comfort that can hope to ease the pain Of losing homes and loved ones the memories will remain Within the silent tears you’ll find the strength to carry on You’re not alone, we are with you. We are Australian! We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian There are so many heroes whose stories must be told They fought the raging fires of hell and saved so many souls From the ashes of despair our towns will rise again! We mourn your loss, we will rebuild. We are Australian! We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian I'm the hot wind from the desert, I'm the black soil of the plains I'm the mountains and the valleys, I'm the drought and flooding rains I am the rock, I am the sky, the rivers when they run The spirit of this great land, I am Australian We are one, but we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We share a dream and sing with one voice: I am, you are, we are Australian I am, you are, we are Australian! When I was in primary school we had to sing the national anthem every week. Now I'm in high school and we don't have to sing it at all and recently (and unfortunately) I have forgotten it. I'll have to learn it again. unless we change the anthem to this awesome song!
