Rare opportunity to demonstrate a sound that no turbine tech wants to hear... ever!
... because it means you have to get that thing you dropped in there back out. Jet engines are heavy and sensitive, so it's a big deal to lift one up and turn it over, just to hopefully drop out a small piece that some dumbass dropped in there.
If that does not work, the engine must be disassembled to the point where the item can be retrieved. This will be an expensive process.
... that's why it's a bad sound.

Shot in summer 2010 with a Canon Power Shot SD980is, at its max setting of 720P and 30 fps.
It was a 275.00 camera then.
This article/instrument is the compressor section of an LM1500, which is the ground running version of the mighty J79 turbojet. It is sitting with the inlet facing down, so the blades get bigger the lower you get, making the notes or sounds get lower in frequency as the screw drops through.
The blades are normally mounted with some looseness, to allow for thermal expansion, and to absorb vibratory/resonant energy.
These blades have built up corrosion in their mounting slots, and are seized solid, so they ring out like tuning forks.
If blades in this condition were to be run in an engine, the ringing and resonance would quickly build to the point where they would crack and break off, totally destroying the engine.
This actual piece of an engine has been turned into a public display and art piece, called the Turbinophone. Google that, and enjoy!
The Turbinophone is mounted inlet up, so the notes rise in progression as pellets are dropped into it.

We used to operate these giant machines everyday and only hoped these small erros which causes big destruction dont happen.. so we had to check everything before running the engine

@@HangingDGrunt we used to make these parts and repairing works for the private aircraft.. once the screw got loosened up and went inside the engine and we had to open up the whole engine to search that single screw.. it took nearly 3 days of work due to the small structure of the turbo engine and we cannot even break that as we were under budget.. so you see this is why we wished that the screw wasnt inside the turbo engine
working on gas and steam turbines we have to adhere to a strict "you will not be fired for any dropped items if you report them" policy because the cost for extraction will always be less than the millions it will cost if you destroy the turbine.

As a mechanic for 8 years, the second you held the screw over the drop zone I immediately got goosebumps and anxiety.

@@qarinah8586 because dropping screws can cause an assload of work especially as a wind turbine technician. Dropping a screw or bolt (in the absolute worst case scenario) can kill.

@@marcar19 the uploader also talked about it in the video description. It means you have to disassemble the machine, find the screw, fix any damage it may have caused, like scratches and stuff, then reassemble the machine. It's like spilling water on your laptop, it's usually a disaster.
The kind of sound that makes you want to make a mistake
If every single noise is a different fan blade attached to a different section of the compressor then you DO NOT WANT TO MAKE THIS MISTAKE. You are looking at hours over multiple shifts to fix it checking every blade for damage and replace it the ones that are.

You better make sure it's all rusted up, because in a functional turbine engine, the compressor blades are not stiff. They can wiggle slightly, and barely any noise would be heard.

Didn't think I'd see the reload god here
Almost did this on my first outage after getting hired at the power company. Only a month in, didn't know anything, wasn't given much if any instruction and basically was just a tool gopher. Picked up a home built slide hammer we were using while we were putting the upper shell on the compressor stage of a big gas turbine, wrist flopped over and dumped the threaded rod with the washers and all that right down into the intake. Got lucky as hell that it just fell down and out the bottom and didn't actually go inside the unit. But for sure thought my new job was over that day

The sound of a 3 hour job turning into a 30 hour job.
When I witnessed this for real, it was a ten second job turning into a 2 hour job. Everybody was relieved, because it could have turned into a two week job. A week to tear apart the engine to find the thing, and another week of reassembly just to get back where it all started.
You don't get too many of those before you are reassigned to parts cleaning.
@@AgentJayZ if you're working on a turbine right side up, would it not be common practice to cover up the vent so things don't drop in there? I'd consider it lucky to have heard the sound. If the environment is loud, you're wearing ear plugs, and you dropped a plastic piece in there, you might not hear anything.
Yes, covers are always used. And the shops where these things are built are quiet.
