    Y'know, they may be way louder, way less efficient, less powerful, and less safe, but old engines just sound so much more ALIVE. Imagine being on an airfield in WW2 and hearing a fleet of RRs or Merlins start up. That had to be an amazing sound.

      Most people don't do it correctly. You should have one leg that throws you away from the prop when performing this operation.

    Imagine trying to start one of these in the war after clearing packed snow out of the cowling from a long cold blizzard night and the enemy is closing in fast you got to get that prop spinning that cold wind blowing then you got to climb behind it rev it up and take flight with all that cold air blowing on you. Hard times.

      iirc they are like two strokes, air fuel mixture enters crankcase via carb, so carb and subsequent fuel line stay stationary@@Englishsea24

    the Gnome Rotary Radial sounds like a mix of a large caliber machine gun firing and the 30mm rotary cannon on the A-10 Warthog firing when the engine starts, gets brought up to speed, and then operates for a bit

    Brits sure designed some very excellent engines. Our P 51 was a dog until it got the British engine. For that matter, most of my favorite aircraft are British engineered

      The only engine sound I have ever seen silence 30,000 people in awe at the Lancaster's spitfire and hurricane formation that came over at southport was an eerie day foggy hearing that sound then the silhouette of those planes was truly stunning then came the P51D was in my element that day

      The Canadian land was on loan to us just Jane is at east kirkby Lincoln and the duxford bbmf phantom of the ruhr is the only one we have in the air at the moment it was in 2014 but what a sight she went home on a borrowed engine

      Brilliantly simple solution to a problem, though. Machining and metallurgy couldn't make proper cooling fins, so they just spun the whole engine around a stationary crank.

    Makes you wonder how the allies ever won the war doesn't it! Greatest respect for the men that kept them working and the brave pioneering souls who flew them. Lest we never forget them all.
