Thanks, Tony, another really good informative video. I like the tips about the blending, going to near to the masking tape is a mistake i used to make plenty of times. And i like the way you describe the first coat of clear as being a 'gripper coat', with the heavier coat coming afterwards. Hopefully that will stick in my mind so i don't go and put too much on to start with. Another mistake i make, even though i know i should not, I am a bugger for getting carried away - especially when spraying base coat over old paint that's been rubbed down, i have learn't the hard way so many times that if i put too much on to start with i am likely going to have the base coat reacting with the older paint. Done that a lot of times and have had to rub down and start over. One day i will learn to slow down and not rush. But, as always, your videos are full of very helpful info for those of us that just tackle the odd job now and then. Very much appreciated, and very interesting viewing.
hi steve and thankyou im glad the videos come across so well for you guys and yes a huge key in this job is not to rush it never ends well even for us seasoned painters
Tony i have a small compressor 2hp - -4.6 cfm 50 litres. I want to spray a reat bumper and front wing. I have a hvlp 0.8 mini gun and a 1.3 lvlp gun. Any advice, and tips please. I know compressor is small but i am on the understanding that if i spray panels etc seperately i maybe ok. Thanks Tony
Nice video tony. I do these repairs on a daily basis and goes to show if done correctly these repairs are just as good as hitting the full bumper. Emphasis on done properly though
haha defintely mate the properly bit is key i redo alot of these that have been done badly b other shops its unreal how many jobs i do a week that others have messed up and got paid for too, but i suppose some of us have standards lol
Yep I can second that mate. Standards are key in this trade let them drop then you have nothing like they say your only as good as your last job and like you said some of the jobs I've had that need reworks make you wonder how these people ever got into this trade. Some people say it's about qualifications and shit these days I went and did my ata accreditation with a few lads who passed as I did and the work they pass out was shocking I was found just fine before given any qualifications. Proofs in the pudding I say and that's the work
definitely mate im self taught learnt the hard way but honestly i think that has made me better at what i do , there are no shortcuts do a job once and do it right
Thanks for the reply 👍 can you tell me what a sealer is plse as im unsure on the steps for painting regarding primer, sealer, base. Going to attempt to paint 😆
Hi graham check out this new series we’ve just done we’ve used the same gun and air cap all the way through for base and clear How To Spray Solvent Basecoat Episode 2 - Car Spray Painting For Beginners Series th-cam.com/video/mwtC8G8IMwc/w-d-xo.html
I wouldn't mind a bit of advice off you mate. I'm a tradesman myself and can plaster, including patching ect so I've got a proper idea on feathering in ect. I've just got a new classic red mg car but it has got a few scratches on 2 sides as well as a lot of stone chips. I'm after painting it myself over a few weekends maybe? Would you have an advice for a fellow Manc? Regards
hiya. great vids. what would you recommend if someone has burned through the clear on the corner of a 1 series rear bumper. damaged area is the size of 10p coin.
Hi...I need my golf gtd corner bumper respraying after my poor spray can finish (finish good just poor colour match)...what price range should I be looking at for same amount of work (don't want exact figures just want a rough figure to see if it's worth having done or not) cheer's
@@TonysRefinishingTV thanks for the quick reply much appreciated 👍...the work needed would be rubbed down and masking only...no deep scratches or anything.... just a poor colour match..I brought dark iron blue with correct codes etc from ebay but the colour match is awful,I have been told the reason for the poor match is because it's solvent based and not water ...I'm no expert on this so don't know if this is correct or not or if I just got a poor match...👍
I would say try fade out again. We use upol in an aerosol and impact in litres. I would say 80% of the time no polishing on the blends are needed. That's not to say we don't give them a little flat and polish. Also a top tip is to only buff up your blend area, not scuff up. The blending thinners is happy to lay down on shinny paint work. Great vid, wish I had the time to do the same.
Tony did my bumper as you described and has come out with a factory finish thank you for the tips and advice. One question, can you put too many coats of clear on? I did 2 but were not very heavy so was thinking of giving it a 3000we n dry tomorrow and adding a bit more clear, good idea or not.
Tony always put the fear of god into me when i see you using your tack rag immediately after applying paint. How do you/I know its safe to do so without damaging new paint. Cheers Tony Learning so much off your brilliant videos
Lol 😂 a lot of people say that , just make sure you know the base is fully matt and well dried mate , come with a lot of experience I guess but once you know in your mind it’s dry give it a little air over it for a short while with your gun to be 100% safe
lol , and thanks buddy would be awesome one day to get to teach someone one to one and pass on these skills and techniques but for now youtube is my outlet lol
great vid but i@m not sure when it comes to sanding. when you spray the base do you spray up to the sanded area or do you keep the spray within the sanded area. And when you spray the clear coat do you spray up to the sanded edge or do you keep in the sanded area and then use 2k thinners to melt in the area? its probably obvious but i cant see a vid ever mentioning this. Thanks
hi ray the base should cover past the harsh sanded area and the clear should stay within the scotched area on the panel and then the edge of this you use the fade out thinner on
Subscribed. Thanks mate, learnt a lot from your videos and looking forward to more content. Your skill and talent is amazing. I'm going to attempt a few smart repairs myself soon on some bumper corners. My repair areas are actually quite small but I want to give myself as much room as possible to work with. If I rough up the bumper that doesn't have new paint, with 1000 grit will this be sufficient for new clear to bond to? Just want to make sure I get my prep right.
you can on some colours just use the code and standard shade but this comes with experience of colours and the ages of the car ect, i perfer to have the colour chipped to the closest shade to aid the colour match
Love all you videos, always nicely shot and clearly explained. Quick question on the prep for the area up to the clear blend, what grade paper did you use to flat the old clearcoat. Thku.
@@TonysRefinishingTV thanks mate. Well, I see how it goes and I might travel up to you, I'm from London. Ok mate il be honest they are hard to set up tbh if you search our videos you’ll see one called £10 spray gun review we’re I used one on an Audi that may help abit but tbh they are terrible and very hard to use even for someone like myself they spray very uneven and need a lot higher pressure than usual to get a decent finish mate
Hi Tony great video again. Can you tell me the mini gun you are using? Iam here in Australia. Or a gun you can recommend that is not to expensive.... Thanks
hi this gun is the sata 3000b hvlp but its not a cheap gun i beleive the ani mini gun that spray guns direct do is good for a cheaper gun though and they ship worldwide now too
How much ml of clear did you use, iknow u do mention it sometimes but a good idea to let us know how much basecoat/lacquer u use on different jobs👍 also...get more vids out!😂
Thank you for your reply, I have a scratch I attempted to repair or improve so its not so noticeable on a 2017 Honda Pilot, Steel Saphire Metallic...I burned through the clear coat while wet sanding with 2500 and 3000 grit. The body shop said they would need to spray and blend two doors at the cost of $1000
What a great video..I loved that...Thanks Tony...
no problem at all buddy glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching

Plastic primer or a 2k primer
2k high build primer buddy

Great work Tony! Looking forward to the £10 gun review! Cheers very much appreciated. Steve.
thanks steven will have it up mid week
Great video, what did you put in the clear, some rocket or anti silicone. Cheers
hey andy it was a drop of rocket just to speed up the process as this was very much a quick in and out job
Hi Tony if using my SRI Pro for smart repair what needle and nozzle would you se fela
id say 1.2 personally mate
Can we mask up the clear coat blend area while doing the base coat ?
yes if you wish to you need to be carefull though not to get a hard edge on the masking with the base though even a slight edge will ruin the job
Tony can i use same nozzle for both base and clear as someone has told me the atomization is different on the two finishes.

Damn bro very nice!!!!!!! Can u do a door repair video??? I burned through my clear coat and paint to the primer???

Solvent
