Nice blend job well explained .
First time i used clear basecoat was on a Suzuki motorcycle that was pearl white with two different colours of blue over the white .
House of Color make a air-dry interclear that's probably clear basecoat .
You just can't afford to get any marks on the pearl white while masking up for the two different blues .
After successfully using it on the Suzuki i thought why not use it under silver and as you proved it works great .
Prior to clear basecoat i used for years sticky lacquer which is massively over thinned two pack lacquer .I used it to fill scotchbrite flatting so it didn't show any flatting marks under silver basecoat.
I still mix up sticky lacquer with slow thinner as a fade out thinner .It,s a great way of using any clear lacquer up as it stays liquid for weeks .
yeah its a clear base mate yeah ive never used thinned clear as a sealer its not good to do tbh because of adhesion from what ive heard
Fade out thinner always seemed troublesome back in the 90's when I used to use it..never could get the hang of it. This modern stuff seems much easier and better. Excellent work fella.
Just did this method on my Audi A3 yesterday. They call it intercoat clear. 1 coat over the blend area to cover the scratches. Blend comes out perfect. eliminates that sanding scratch blend. Looks like glass. especially with that Kapci 6030 clear. needed no buff. laid down almost completely flat. Used a mini gun with pretty low pressure and atomized super fine. Overspray was completely dry and would not stick.
Totally agree with you always easier to blend silvers if the shade u pick is very slightly lighter darker no chance (waterbase)
As you know I'm from a time when paint was simpler ! There are paintings hanging in galleries and on collectors walls that don't have the attention to detail and time modern paint and yourself put into the finished product . As ever great vid showing just how much time and skill go into a quality finish 👍

Tony, again you've really helped answer a few questions I have about blending metallics (silver esp). I have a silver toyota to spot repair and have already purchased what I thought would make a good wet bed.......but I'm not so sure now. I purchased Mipa 2k transparent sealer as I couldn't seem to find any of the 'clear base' that are often recommended in these videos.
Wondering of you can advise.
Also, in my mind I see how a 1k clear base can be used with a 2k base coat?

Thanks for tips, I had problems last month, "EZR" started to be rough, and I fc kd it when turned the pressure up... had to sand it down and repeat, but it was a mess... now I see it is the right thing to do to lower the pressure. (I was scared to be blochy)

with the fade out I like axalta but it is 30 a spray can. Fade out thinner light then use spray gun with air. then I do another coat followed up with air.
Hi tony very helpful content,watch a lot of your TH-cam channel,I have a lot of the things you have said about reflex silver,with dark patches and not bleeding problems.the video today with the T5 reflex silver,with gun pressure has been a great help I will now give this ago .many thanks stevie p from rs cars of peterfield.

Loving the videos they are being a big help. I am setting up to paint my own car at home, have my compressor and everything set up now but now just finding it hard as to where to buy all the paint materials needed and what the different things they are all called any tips where best to start?

When doing the blow-ins do you not do baggy masking to let the clear creep under? I see you had a hard masking line. Interested to know how others do them.
Great tips on silvers. I have struggled with LA7W in the past, probably by spraying them at 2bar. I’ll look forward to trying this way 👍
no mate as these were more on hard swage lines and if i have a blend to put in instead of baggy masking il straight mask an edge put some foam along the edge to stop hard edge and make sure i stop before that , that way i dont risk any blowing under the sheet onto the car ect
Some massive tips again, thanks. Just done a LA7W and the blend always came out dark just like you said, it was a mess.. turned out hosing it on at 2 bar is not a good idea haha..

Another well presented and explaind vid mate some people don't realise the diff between mattalics and non mattalic paints how diff they are to go on it may look simuler but we both know they are not ,hows your health doing

Reflex silver is a tough match. just the spray pressure will make it not match. nice even blend. did that a few weeks ago on the Jetta. audi I did was a different silver.

blending silver easily from 1.8 bar which you do normal coat decrease to 1.6 bar and make a bigger distance from the panel move your hand back a little bit not to close
Hey Tony great premier last night, the live chat seemed quite busy and was interesting. I think these colours really show how good you are a spraying as it's quite a skilled job getting the blend spot on and you did a fab job on this one mate.
When you put the code into the Kapci software it shows a list of colours with the same code so is the top one the lightest and the last one in the list the darkest mate or isn't it that simple🤔🙄 I wish I knew more about all the different colours that are listed and the names have 3C or 2C and other letters at the end plus the codes also have letters in brackets like LA7W (M-C//L) I mean wtf is all that about, maybe one day you could do a vid on the software explaining more what all this crap means🤯🤦♂️😂
I've only done one silver which was my SLK 744 Brilliant Silver (mixed from my scheme) which I did on one of my single panels, I held the panel next to my car and it was way to light so I don't know what went wrong, I think I laid the base at around 2 bar as I didn't know different pressures effect the colour🤦♂️🤷♂️😂 opps sorry for another long comment🥱
so the letters correspond to the shade made so D is darker , L lighter, LC lighter coarser ect ect mate il have to give you a ring one day when ive got it open grab a colour like this up together and go through it for you then you'll understand it so easily mate

im trying to blend in chrysler PA4 basecoat on a spot I fixed on my hood.. the issue is the paint shows up darker on the repair area.. I think the paint is slightly faded,, what can I do to make the paint match? the color im using looks to be bright mettalic silver, with just a timy bit of black.. im thinking of adding more silver to the paint, to lighten it up a bit. I reduced the paint and shot it with a airbrush.
Ok i will try the wet bed on silver porche passenger door and around sun roof where its just starting to micro crack to help out the blend dusting .i was just considering doing this then miraculously i saw this vidio .i usually tack the clear a couple lite times,then sort or a medium, letdry a bit then one wet final coat considering texture match. Have you coverd clear coat cracking like this and repaird like this before..im trying to save this old silver poche.this will be my first wet bed. He is headed toward clear coat disintegration. Trying to save it.thank you.great vidio.
il be honest if the clears cracking then its failing so needs sanding right back and redoing from the ground up in my opinion

Very good tutorial on silver blends , silvers can be the most difficult to get right , we had a professional spray shop do some blends on a 1996 Toyota Supra , took 3 times to get it right , but you explained that very thoroughly , great stuff Tony !!!!

Another good vid buddy, can you tell me how many turns out on the fan you used for the base coat, not having worked in the car side I like to gain as much info as possible to help me when painting, did you put the met base through a strainer and if so does it have to have a certain mesh size, thanks, keep the viids coming as I'm sure there's ton of people who enjoy them
Full fan on the w400 for base mate and everything goes through a strainer mate with us even the primer and we use 190 I think it is

My guns do not like anything below about 25psi, so I use a reducer to achieve the appropriate finish accordingly. We generally have warmer climate conditions too (now winter, 23C day temps). I cannot get such a good mathching peel to OEM like yours though.
What sort of guns are you using mate
@@TonysRefinishingTV Hi Tony, I have a couple of workquip brand (1.3, 1.8, 2.0) for undercoat etc, a Devilbiss FLG5 1.3 for base/clear and a Anest Iwata R160-Q 1.0, 1.2 for smaller touch up jobs. My sweet spot is around 25 for most things, a little higher for undercoats.
Tip to anybody watching this. use Mipa base coat stabiliser thinners, it’s a game changer.

Moondust silver burst my ba☆☆☆ think every other car is close to that colour
My achilles heel is 2K direct gloss white .1st coat is easy .2nd coat my eyes get snow blind and i just have to trust my instinct and not over do it .
