    The Bias may not be superior technology but on those old vehicles they just look so good. Good choice.

    I was fascinated by Dennis. I would eagerly listen to an hour long documentary on tires if he narrated. My knowledge of tires is basically that they are round, and that they are black.

      He is very knowledgeable on tires and tractors. One thing I have learned, it pays to listen to older generations story's and the knowledge they have. I'll tell Dennis you were impressed, next time I see him. Thanks for watching.

    My dad grew up in MO on a farm. My grandpa had an old 1959 Chevrolet Apache back in the mid 1970's! He used to let me drive it in the fields and I thought that was the greatest thing in the world. Both he and the truck are now gone, but the family farm and the memories remain. There is nothing like growing up on a farm or being exposed to one at least. Midwestern farm people are just good solid people and they are a special breed. God bless you for raising your boys the way you are. It makes me feel good to know that families like yours still exist.

    When I convinced my dad to put radials on our old '64 Ford F-100, it was the best change we ever made to the vehicle! It felt so much safer on the interstate after that...no more wallowing at speed and you could hold the wheel in the same position and the truck stayed there. The truck was still a working truck back then, too...late 1980's

    I always go bias ply on my classics. If you think about it, we don’t drive them as much to really make a difference. I like to know feel the car how it originally drove with bias ply, and the look, there’s no comparison.

    People always say find a mechanic you ‘trust’, a good tire shop you trust is just as important. Mine is a chain, les schwab on Dana in Redding,CA and a similar les schwab in north bend, WA. I usually had something out of the ordinary (forklift or tractor or 4x4), which meant owner-manager. When it came to daily driver stuff, the normal up-sell never happened since once they saw me, they would just call ‘joe’ (owner/manager). I would get my place in the queue, come back the 20-40 minutes later with a box of donuts from a local market, grab one for me, hand the rest over the counter. Another customer saw this and said “that’s why he gets special treatment!”, I replied “nope, I’m not a dick, that’s why I get respectful treatment” (‘joe’ spit his coffee). A $5 dozen donuts goes a long ways

    I’m here in Missouri as well, and I still remember when we started getting radial tires I thought that they were so cool, but it seemed so strange not having to put on the mud and snow tires come fall. With the bias ply tires it was a given that if we wanted to drive in the winters we always had to switch the tires on the back of the car as well the trucks. Plus we always had tires chains handy, and now you hardly ever see those around here. Thanks for the great videos, and keeping the truck stock including the tires!

    We call that rutt finding, where the tires try to follow other tracks in the road. Bias tires are always gonna do it. But hey I love it. Shows me how the generations before had to drive.

    My dad was a sign painter, most of his life. I remember hundreds of trucks that he painted the owner's name and address and empty weight on. He charged $15.00 per side and the state only required the driver's side, but most truck owners wanted both sides lettered and for $5.00 more each side would be "shaded". Dark green truck with white letters and red shading was considered "hot stuff" in the 50's.

    Radial. I know you want to be period correct, but cars want to be driven and that makes them bound to be on the road with other people. We have to be responsible and considerate to ourselves and others on the road, so we can enjoy these cars longer. You never know what might happen, but for something so visually insignificant, we should make the responsible decision. Bias tyres had only one advantage - load capacity; but with modern radial tyres, even that isn't a good enough reason to purchase them.

    My '55 Ford F-100 came with bias ply Coker's and I didn't care for the way they seemed to want to roll under while cornering. I went with radials and solved that problem only to have the steering at low or no speed become considerably more difficult. I later found that the Ford owners manual recommended 44 psi and as the radials are rated up to this pressure I thought I'd try that as well. The truck does corner much better and the ride doesn't seem to be worse until you go over gravel roads. Steering at slow or no speeds is still bad. I prefer the traction and safety and long life options myself. I like what you're doing otherwise. God bless you.

    Bias ply tires are known as Cross ply tyres in the UK. I use them on a 1930s car and they're better than the original period items as the modern compounds give better grip. Life is limited, especially as they are intended for road and racing. Modern steel belt radials are a lot tougher.

Question, the donor chassis and motor has a 2 piece drive shaft, can i just cut the rear shaft to fit my shorter frame, my rear diff has a yoke on it, it's not for a torque tube?

  • @gordonmay5723

    The extra grip of radial tires, as demonstrated by the tire dealer, exerts a side thrust on the front wheel bearings, through turns and curves. The original ball bearings were not designed to withstand the additional side force provided by the grip of the radial tires. If you had installed the radial tires, you then should replace the front wheel bearing, with roller bearings. Just another reason to keep the bias ply tires, if your intention is to remain original equipment

    On my old 1951 chevy 3100, the tire shop sold me some Michelin and those rode very well ! further more , You need to know the front axle / suspension and steering Box were built to last, you can take some of the free play in the steering box by thightening a screw. Axle & king pins are best ever ( same as tractor truck ), axle can be straighten if bent, grease nipple on suspension spring. I see modification made to these truck with Ford macpherson suspension big mistake, original configuration with the king pins will outlast that. I lived up north Canada and my truck started in the - 50 C no block heater some times left in the cold for more than a week and it started every time.

    I'm 15 and I've been saving my pennies and dimes, and I only need $800 more to buy this 1950 ford sedan beater I've been looking at for a while. It doesn't run but I can get it running, and when I get it I'll work for a dual carb, high compression heads, and bias plies.

    Note to the tire installer: Using side nippers to install new tire valves, is a big no-no. Use the proper tool for this job, specifically designed to install valves without damaging them.
    To this truck's owner: I approve of your choice of bias ply tires for your truck. Its suspension was designed to work with bias ply tires. The soft, single-ply sidewall of a radial, is not compatible with the truck's suspension. Stiff suspension, soft tire sidewall, makes for potential trouble.

    Bias Ply.
    That's what it had when new.
    Radials if you want the tyres to last 50k plus miles or if the tread pattern you want is not available on a bias ply tyre.

    Real men drive bias ply! Glad you went that route. Your tire guy is great, love his explanations. That twist test you did was cool. I never knew the reason why guys who put radials on have a hard time steering. A guy in an earlier comment mentions that. I have bias ply"s on my model A. I want that driving experience, seems like you do too. Keep the videos coming, we're all waiting for the drive with the old owner. You're doing that truck right!

    How is the ride? I like how my truck rides with the radial. But the steering is completely terrible and the wheels are after market I do have the original ones. I will be daily driving the truck and taken it on road trips but also using it as a truck. What would you recommend?

      It's a toss up for me. I have had these bias tires for 3 years. I have had no issues. However I have often considered putting a set of radials on it. Mine steers great. I have put 10k miles on them. I really like the look of them on the truck too. I know I probably didn't help much lol. Thanks for the question

  • @mikejohansson6711
    @mikejohansson6711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting, I was always told that you can not put modern day radials on an old car, as the front end alignment systems that they were designed with were in the age before radials and if one puts on a radial tire it will cause stress and wear on the front end. It that is not true, I hope that radials would work as one day I hope to have an old truck myself.

    • @FarmAlarm
      @FarmAlarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely put radial tires on old vehicles. As soon as the radial came out, most folks ran them. 👍

    depends on where your driving, ply tires turn bit easier, but feel every bump, radials smoother ride, harder to make turns

  • @morgansword

    The gentleman who sold you tires learned to sell tires but he didn't know what life was on practical terms... The axle under the forty nine is designed for "bias plys" and will track nicely yet with radials will dart on wet roads. I love radials but they were designed for a totally different application. Good choice and the truck just gets better every time I see it. I believe she will hang for a long time

    • @FarmAlarm
      @FarmAlarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info. However, in defense of the tire man, he was simply telling me the difference between radial tires and bias ply tires. He was not trying to sell me either one. Informational purposes only. I had already decided on bias. Thanks for the comment.

    You forgot to mention that if you get a nail in your tire with a tube, you will lose your air pressure quality vs. without tubes.
