  • Today is the day that Donnie gets to ride in his dads 70 year old truck. I Bought this 1949 5 window Chevy 3100 back in July of 2019 from a storage shed from a man named Donnie. He is the original owners son. It was his Dads Truck. He had not ridden in his dads truck in almost 35 years.
    We also discus how much money I paid for the old Chevy truck, and how much it took to get running after it sat not running for 30 years.

    you should get a sign painter to redo his dad's name on the doors, but do it distressed to match the truck. It looks great. It's awesome to see how excited and happy Donnie and his wife were to be able to ride in it. You sure looked happy as well. Good job.

    THANK YOU for taking the time to keep this old classic as original as you did. So many want to chop them up, "modernize" them and wind up with hideous rat rods that can't function as a truck should. This is a beautiful job of bringing a deserving truck back to life.

    Glad you finally got to it. They loved it. Paint looks great! Seats are sharp too. Jeff Jameson has a good idea about putting the name back on the doors. I don't know if I'd put that performance stuff on. Runs good the way it is. That old six is only Babbitt. Enjoy it, it's a great truck. Funny how an old truck can have a fan club! You have to get another project going, I enjoy your videos. Bye the way, you married the right one! Have a good holiday season.

    Nice truck. I have a '48 Thriftmaster, 216 cu 5 window with deluxe SS trimming like yours, Dad bought it new and I have owned it for 57 years, my friends joke I'll probably be buried in it. It's never been restored, just good regular maintenance over the years. It did have a paint job in '91, that's all though. 4 speed, runs like a champ, 86,000 original miles, truth! I have the original sales receipt, 1,600.00 dollars. I am SO glad to see you did not pimp it with whitewalls, they look so stupid on an old truck. Anyway, good job, you got that beauty for a song, I hope you keep it. Oh, that Fram oil filter was not factory stock, could be ordered as a dealer extra .Thanks for the vid.

    Just remember this when you bolt on those performance items: Those 216 engines have poured babbitt connecting rod bearings, and cast iron, not aluminum pistons. Also, the rods use a splash type of oil lubrication, with a scoop-like device fastened to the connecting rod caps. Everything else is pressure oiled. They don't like to be revved too high without eventual catastrophic failure. The later 235 engines with aluminum pistons and full pressure oiling would be a better choice to hot rod. The stock 216 is not like any modern engines that like to rev. It's great to see that you are enjoying the old girl the way she was made. The old couple's reactions are priceless.

    • @FarmAlarm
      @FarmAlarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for watching and for commenting. My intentions for the modifications are twofold, and neither of them are for hotroding. Mainly for nostalgia. Second would be for efficiency. I would never consider swapping new parts on this truck, such as an LS motor 😂. Anyone can do that, but not too many old Survivor vehicles left around. Thanks again 👍👍👍

    Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪, I can see that you are a family that respects your elders. That’s everything in my book. If somebody let me write my own cheque if I was in your position, I’d chase them off! I just loved this video! Sure wish I had your talent and craftsmanship! I would love to do a vintage truck over. Brings back great memories! My Dad owned a garage/gas station in the 50s and 60s. I used to ride in his wrecker truck with him! Great job! Happy travels!

    I enjoyed this series of videos more than anything that I have watched on TH-cam in a very long time. I subscribed to your channel and I look forward to more videos of this old truck. I saw a comment that you should have the original owners name repainted on the truck where it used to be and I totally agree.

    That brought tears to my eyes. I used to drive an old Chevy farm truck like that out in rural Nebraska in the late 1960s. Brings back fond memories.

    You followed through on your promise. Great story. You did a good job getting the truck in good running condition.
    A couple of guys in high school drove five window Chevy trucks. One classmate put a 283 engine in a '49. The other '49 got burned up when Pete was welding under it. He welded a makeshift floorboard to a gas line. He did not know it was a gas line. He though the metal gas line was a solid rod. He had the truck pulled into the high school shop. The fire trucks came to our school. We were all outside watching the firemen put out the fire. They hooked a chain to the rear bumper and pulled it out of the shop. There was a lot of smoke.
    Pete turned a five gallon bucket upside down to sit on and drove the truck home that day. The fire gutted the interior, but the truck still ran. He never got it put back together. Pete was devastated, but none of us had that kind of money to rebuild the interior. We would buy an old vehicle for $75.00 and and drive it until something big went wrong.

    My granddad had a black one just like that. He'd load me & my brothers & sisters & cousins in the back & take us to the swimming hole in the summer. I'd give anything to have that pickup now. It's nice that you took the time to go show him how much you care about it.
