I'm really sick of people calling the old Cinderella "weak". Ok, maybe she was a little passive, but like Doug said, she showed anger, concern, and actually felt like a genuine human being.
Honestly, a person who's lived in abusive home won't exactly be the most assertive person in the house. Cinderella is fine because while that's not all women, only some are like that.
+Trophies Well, I'm not gonna say that the original Cinderella was "weak". However, that doesn't excuse the fact that in my opinion...she's kind of an idiot in the original version. Now, the newer version, while she's not as "strong" as people say she is...I guess you could say that she had somewhat of 2nd Dimensional personality. Just not too much. However, I will credit the newer version for giving the prince more screen-time in the movie. So, that's just me. But yeah...Ever After is the better Cinderella movie than both Disney versions. Hell, it's even better than Cinderella III, in my opinion.
Dejay Page I forgot Lucifer was in the live action. One scene of chasing mice and loathing around near the end of the movie, it was a pretty big gap for it to be seen again.
Cinderella is so important to me. As someone who grew up with an abusive parent and step parent (luckily I also grew up with an Amazing parent and step parent on the other side) I could look at someone who never let the cruelty of others affect her own personality. She never let a cruel world make her cruel. There was no way out of her situation, so instead she made the best out of it and remained a caring person.
This is why The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tangled are important to me, I went through abusive family relationships and ended up feeling trapped like those characters. My husband is actually my prince, as he left everything he knew behind and drove across six states in an old car just to be with me :) we have our own little fairy tale and I'm so happy even to this day. ^.^
You are a strong person, I congratulate you for staying strong against those who abused you, and I am glad you had other loving parents in your life. It kills me when people, especially nowadays, say that the original Cinderella is just about a girl wishing for and finding her prince, when they couldn't be more wrong. I think you summed it up perfectly, staying strong, kind, and caring in a cruel world and hoping for things to get better, especially when you can't do anything about it for at least a while, is the real message of the original classic. Again, *NOT* her wishing for and finding her prince.
I was in the same situation as a child, and when I got older I took revenge in the most sadistic and mechiavelic way possible, and that act tortured me from the inside more than the vhild abuse itself. However I have a wonderful family to take care of and to take care of me.
When we inevitably get our Snow White remake, let Cinderella appear in White’s dream showing how she helped a woman and got rewarded which leads to White swearing on Hades’ behalf to drag her down to hell.
@@fabtrash Well said. It depends on who you help. You can be nice (and should be) but the actions of others and what they do to you, are out of your control. Snow White - old woman (who was selling Apples) : bad (The Witch in disgust) Cinderella 2.0 - Old woman (who wanted a drink) : good Beast (Beauty and the Beast) : horric - Woman looking for shelter: Nutreul good.
To be honest, I feel like the romance between the prince and Cinderella wasn't as important to the story. Yes, it was a nice bonus for her, but I feel like the story is more about a girl finding her freedom than finding romance.
Ah, these are the thoughts I couldn't quite put into words. This is the reason I didn't really mind the prince not being interesting or Cinderella immediately falling for him. I guess they're still problems, but I never thought they were essential to the theme of the movie
+Hannah Papernick-Yudin: lol I guess. The mice really just added to the fact that Cinderella deserved to be happy and free. Bc she was so kind to them, they were willing to go through all that effort helping her escape
The original story was about how women should be good submissive Christian girls and if they have faith then a prince will come for them. It's very much about the romance.
Cinderella: A Twist In Time, beats both even if it's a sequel. The Prince has more character, Cinderella is stronger as a individual, her sister is likeable and the villain is twisted.
yeah even i gotta admit where i was at the point i was gonna stop caring about disney sequels but cinderella 3 surprised in unexpected ways. it's not perfect cause there are some flaws to it but it is an amazing sequel even when it had no real reason to be.
I think Cinderella is not as much about her being passive but it is about a girl being abused and pulling it through, saving herself out of the situation by being kind and not having her spirit broken.
When you started this debate, I was like "um you're both wasting your time. Ever After is clearly better than both." I'm glad we came to the same conclusion.
When I heard Ever After, so many good memories came back to me. It was one of my favorite movies to watch with my mom and sister. Thank you for pointing out how great that version is!
It's funny that this guy has been here longer then you and your almost beat him in subscribers and some people have been here for like a year and have more or 2 million (leafyishere and pyrocynical etc..)
I liked how leaning more on history solves Ever After's problem of Cinderella being strong enough to leave the house but not being able to. At that point in history, things like domestic abuse were considered family business and the law didn't interfere. Women legally weren't allowed to leave their families until they were married unless they joined a convent. It was perfectly legal for the stepmother to treat Cinderella any way she wanted, including making her a slave. And no matter how much Cinderella went out to the town, helped with servants outside the home, or how smart she was, she wouldn't have freedom until she married. (Yes, sexist and cliche, but that was the law of the land). The Cinderella remake is placed more in a generic fantasy time period, so it can't use this excuse.
Psyche's Rose, they could still use that excuse, that she had no choice, but they were not smart enough, to use it. Even in the 1800’s, Cinderella would still, have that same problem. The workhouses, even if they had them, where she lived, you wouldn’t want to live there, unless you were close to staving to death.
It's really disheartening to see how far down the dumpster "strong female character" has gone in the film industry. Where the hell are the great characters who are badass and deep like the freaking 1990s with the likes of Ellen Ripley or Princess Leah. Where the hell did all the writing quality go?
@@princesspeasant4536 OK, now that gives his roles in Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood a new perspective. Building Ezio's gadgets on his Hidden Blade, decoding the pages of Altair's Codex, giving him a freaking HANG GLIDER, it all fits now!
I watched it several times and I never particularly liked it, even as a child. Even back then I found Cinderella to be a vain golddigger and the mice-cat story waaay to long and annoying. I could never comprehend how you can advertise a "relationship" as true love when all they do is find each other hot and dance for 5 mins silently. The Prince doesn't even talk with her! Hell, he doesn't even have a name!! I could NEVER relate to that.
1950 version: Cinderella is the interesting character and the Prince is the blandest character. 2015 version: The Prince is the interesting character and Cinderella is the blandest character.
By giving Cinderella friends, especially ones who are aware of the abuse she's being subjected, this makes SO MANY NEW problems; it raises a lot of questions like: "Why don't her friends help her?", "Why doesn't she go live with THEM?", "Why do none of them tell the prince so HE can help by demanding the family treat her better?", "Why doesn't she take her friends' advice to protect herself because obviously her parents wouldn't want her to be abused?!!" It's so bad in execution.
And yet the stepmother still didn't want the duke, someone of AUTHORITY to find Cinderella. Also, wouldn't Cinderella be punished even more of she tried to escape? Think about it; if she left and never came back, wouldn't they go after and possibly abuse her even more? Hence why her going to the ball AND marrying the prince was such a big deal for her? Just like the original Cinderella, she's trying to make the most of the situation and the remake Cinderella could possibly be going through depression, hence why she's trying to stay cheerful and had TWO mental breakdowns.
Even the Hilary Duff Cinderella Story movie did this new addition better. Hilary Duff's Cinderella character (named Sam in the movie) eventually stood up to her abusive stepmother, moved out of her house, and went to live w/ her deceased father's restaurant's manager.
@Marco Hidalgo Yes! I was so thinking that reading this comment. Hillary Duff's version makes sense why her friends could do little until Sam stood up to Fiona.
Thank you for your Main Character explanation. I hate "Perfect" characters. And there are so many main characters which are like this now and I can't stand them because they are just not interesting! Give me a flawed interesting character over a boring perfect one any day.
0deadx21 If you want to know why I think the animated one is interesting or at least better than the live action one, then just watch Nostalgia Critic explain at the end. But in short I'd rather a character with too many flaws than one without any. The one with flaws is always much more entertaining to watch.
0deadx21 The old Cinderella never actually "just sat around and waited for things to be handed to her". She chose to get up and go to the ball against her step mothers wishes, she chose to dance with the prince because that was what she wanted to do, when her step mother tried to stop her, she found a way to get out of the room she was locked in by fighting back. She lived her whole life working for her step mother rather than just giving up. She's not perfect but she's not the helpless damsel everyone tries to portray her as. And she clearly cares about a lot. She cared about going to the ball, she cared about meeting her prince again after they danced, she cares about her animal friends. She even cares about the hard work she does at home - aka when she got angry when the cat messed up her clean floor or when she cried over her ruined dress. I swear it's like you've never even seen the animated version. You're just saying stuff you've heard other people say which is all just bs. Again: Watch the Nostalgia review on Cinderella. He explains exactly why we prefer the animated version. And even if you don't agree, there's no need to get so worked up and start swearing. Seriously, calm down. There's being passionate about something and then there's overreacting to it.
0deadx21 1: Parents who died when she was a little girl and whom she probably can't remember very well, if at all, 2: A house that she is basically a slave in, 3: Step family that treats her like complete shit. Just because she doesn't care about the stuff YOU would, doesn't mean she doesn't care and just because you disagree with the things she cares about, doesn't mean she doesn't care about them. AKA, she cares about things. Obviously this Cinderella isn't perfect. It's a pretty old film so it's going to have its flaws but even they work. She's emotionally because she's psychologically abused so if she breaks down into tears for seemingly no reason, that just adds to how interesting she is as a character. And can you seriously answer me. Have you watched this video? Have you seen Nostalgia Critic's review? Because as he said: The new Cinderella has two major breaks down but otherwise just smiles and looks like a zombie throughout most of it. I mean that scene where's she's locked up. At least the other Cinderella gave a shit and tried to get out. The live action one doesn't do anything (again, as Nostalgia Critic points out).
One thing I like about Old vs. New over most other comparison shows on the internet is that you guys actually come to a conclusion! So many other shows just bullshit it and leave it as a tie (Matpat's former show Deadlock for example) and then tell the audience "You guys make the decision in the comments!" as a stupid way to avoid pissing people off. I don't watch a 15 minute video just to have it be null and only ask for my opinion! I want to hear the opinion of the video creator! Both ways spark discussion in the comments but the way you guys do it just seems much less contrived and ironically makes you seem more involved than the guys who blatantly ask the comment section to decide. So thanks for that!
JK- 27 Note I never said Matpat sucks. I said his show Deadlock was not very good in my opinion. It had the potential to be really good, all he would have to do is come to an actual conclusion after all the points had been made instead of just "Okay arbitrarily we've reached a tie. Comment below to decide who wins!". Just made the whole thing predictable and formulaic instead of actually conveying anyone's overall opinions. Matpat is indeed great. Deadlock wasn't.
+Tyler van de Ven You are absolutly right. I didn't know why I thought lack of conclusions in youtube videos pissed me of, but now I do. As a scientist , I've always found research and arguments without a conclusion unsatisfying and pointless. Without a conclusion I have nothing to counter argue againts or agree with. Which is what a commentary should be. Also it speaks of courage and selfconfidence to present your own opinion and allow others to argue the opposite.
I did, first time years and years ago in middle school. It's really very old in its direction, but there's still this classical enchanting aspect and a bit of the atmosphere that Disney reproduced for Belle's first night at the castle. Now the 2014 film on the other hand, like the best visuals I've ever seen for a French movie, but it lacks sooo much of chemistry between the titular characters and I hate Léa Seydoux (Belle)'s acting. And the story, while creative, is not that really good either. But again, it's still beautiful to watch.
Disagree on Prince Philip. Of the old classic Disney movies (pre-Little Mermaid), Philip actually did have a personality. He was surprisingly funny, and had more than one funny moment in the movie. He gets thrown off his horse while racing dramatically for the princess and gets dumped in the water, then says, "No more carrots" to his horse and in a grumpy/playful sort of way splashes water at him. His coat and hat get stolen by woodland animals, but he just sort of roles with it and ends up dancing in the woods (not his average day probably), and when he returns to his father who's all befuddled over him marrying a peasant, he just says, "You're living in the past, father. This is the fourteenth century!" which is a pretty funny line, and it's pretty telling about how he thinks about life in general. He's a progressive thinker, adventurous and laid back, confident enough to stand up to his father, bold enough to go after what he wants despite political backlash, and he's brave enough to fight a frickin' dragon. That's more than Prince Charming did. Literally the most memorable thing about Prince Charming is that he yawns and has a probable foot fetish. And I can't even remember the name of Snow White's prince. Did he even have a name?
+pharaohyami5000 I don't think I'm gonna sugarcoat it anymore. But...I don't get why people like you feel like you need to compare the original animated version to the live-action remake at all. They're both the same movie, the same story. Just different interpretations. In my opinion...I'd say Ever After is the better Cinderella film than both Disney versions.
jthedog Not to mention that uh...this fairy tale has been re-told like a billion times now. I mean really! There's like over a billion version of this story that has been retold over the last 60 years now. I mean, I'm sure that you know the characters and the story by heart, regardless of which version you're more familiar with. It's the same story, just slightly different interpretation. Simple as that.
About the Cinderella character part: THANK F**** YOU! God, I disliked this remade Cinderella! Specially the "smiling like a zombie part". I suspect this was a decision from the director rather than from the actress, though, considering the other actors go for a similar tone. I mean, when Cate Blanchet tries to do an evil smile, it's so so over the top I can't take it seriously. She was more cartoony than the actual cartoon! And Blanchet is one hell of an actress who can do way better than that! As far as I'm concerned, the only point where the remake truly wins is in the prince. I don't care if the supporting characters hijack the movie, the animated version wins in EVERYTHING else. I haven't seen "Ever After" yet, though. I'll have to give it a go.
+XanderVJ Honestly even the original Prince wins. The Prince was an empty sheet of paper which you can paint or draw to your liking. This IS a story for lil girls. The Prince is more like something for girls to dream or imagine up for themselves on how he's like. Thats the same with videogames that have silent protagonists. The first that comes to mind is Red from Pokemon,he doesnt speak but he's there doing what the player tells him. People just imagined what is he like. They imagined a silent and stoic badass because thats what they wanted to be. Same with the Prince. The animated one gave you bare bones, which is beauty, even the Critic agrees with how he looks and that one yawn was gorgeous. You basically had to imagine your own Prince in the animated like in the original story. In the remake, the prince is just some rich prick who's not my type and i dont care about him.
EverAfter is hands down the best over all. Everyone has a part to play and is give development. Cinderella is strong yet charming, the prince is so fun, the villain is amazing, and even the side characters are endearing. You really should try it.
Oh sweet sweet sanity at 17:56 I wondered over the same thing. I've told people over and over again that you could replace the new Cinderella's lines with 'Have courage and be kind' with different intations of her voice and it'll still make sense. That's all it was about having courage and being kind and honoring her father's home which she abandoned at the end. Someone tells me that in the novelization they used it as a summer home but that's in a separate medium. I've actually gotten into an argument with my boyfriend over how somehow with as little as she does the animated Cinderella had more personality even though the live action was more educated and active. Animated begrudgingly served because she had no choice and nowhere to go. Live action chose to stay and grin and bear it even though she could have left as the friend had mentioned suitable work for her. But no we're suppose to think she's brave for this. How many people in an emotionally abusive relationship did that just fuck up? The only thing I really did like about it was the motivation that it gave to the stepmother although even with her they screwed up because it's hard to figure out if they want you to be sympathetic to her or hate her. She's basically what happens to dreamers when their happily ever after dies too soon and she has to manage on her own so there's no room to have courage and be kind, she has to stay above water and marry off two 'stupid' and 'talentless' daughters. Cindy has smarts and talent she doesn't have to worry even if the prince never was in the picture...if she bothered to leave the damn place behind. But no sadly she isn't held captive by her stepmother as was done in the animated version, she's held captive by the words of her beloved parents. After you stop being dazzled by the vibrant set and costumes you see how flawed the live action is. One person tried to convince me that it was good if we saw it as a story about woman maintaining her compassion regardless of the emotional abuse she suffers from her stepfamily, repeating the words of her dying mother and living by them but taking it too far (yeah that was bullshit granted she still quoted and lived by it in the end) or not really understanding it but finally standing up for herself in the end. Again bullshit because she wasn't even standing up for herself, she was standing up for the prince. Really it could have been a good plot point but they didn't even mean to do that. One person made the perfect comment on how this Cinderella lacks so much agency that she can't even open a window. Yeah it's a nod to how the animals freed her to help her get her HEA but that was something she could have done herself.
Exactly! Sure kids have to deal with mean parents sometimes but you shouldn't teach them they have to respect and care for someone who is abusive, even if you feel guilty for leaving!
BoMah:) Thanks. I remember when I left after seeing the movie with my mother. She went on about how beautiful her dress was, as well as how nice everything looked. Then asked me what I thought, I had this moment of 'Crap I'm about to ruin this for her.' I hadn't refined my response to what I said above but basically said that it looked nice but she did nothing, she brought nothing to the story, they made the prince more interesting than her, the rats were for the most part pointless, and somehow they took some of the good parts of Ever After and made it horribly dull, the Fairy God Mother was channeling Jack Sparrow so hard I thought HBC was drunk
BoMah:) Very true. And oh you made me remember the part I hated the most and that was the whole dress before the ball scene. I had to bite my tongue at the line she gave to the god mother about wanting to wear her mother's gown to the ball. Honoring your mother and father doesn't have to be all that you're about and sadly that was all that she was about. She was the living embodiment of the 5th commandment. At least in the cartoon there was absolutely no way she could have gone to the ball. In this one two small tears that she could have easily pinned that up and gone with it, even the time that she spent crying she could have sewn it together, got on her horse and rode close enough to the palace to walk the rest of the way and still be on time (I know that's not how the story goes but that's how minimal the tearing of her gown was), if her stepfamily was actually willing to wait she could have ran upstairs grabbed a needle and thread then patched it up in the carriage ride to the palace. It's as asinine as those movies where a woman's whole day is ruined because someone threw all of 2 oz of water in her face that could have been wiped off with a napkin.
What bullshit did you write? So rushed, so unthought through. SHE WAS FORBIDDEN TO GO TO THE BALL YOU FUCKING MORON! Even she knows that which is why she brought her stepfamily up and received a glamour disguise. And just because someone can do something, doesn't mean they would or should you idiot.
My thought about the original Cinderella is that maybe Cinderella didn’t get much screen time because we are made to know as much about Cinderella has she knows about herself, being trapped your whole life and not being able to figure out anything about yourself
In my honest opinion, the best mix of the Cinderella is Ever After. I know it's not a choice, but they used an actual time era, no magic, and a better understanding of both Cinderella and the prince. I still love the classic Disney, but loved Ever After when I became older.
Now I wish you had seen the czechoslovakian one, Three wishes for Cinderella. She is sassy, tomboyish, meets with the prince before, prince is bratty and playful, the stepmother is arrogant and calculating even to the face of king and queen, and didn't go broke, and the cinderella doesn't stay there for stepmother, but the staff members are her friends and family and she doesn't want to abandon them. And... there are no mice :D
This whole video I was wondering why they weren't discussing Ever After - one of the few good things Drew Barrymore has done. There is a flaw. Just before she fights Cinderella declares that her father had taught her sword fighting and she hadn't forgotten a thing. He died when she was about 8, so she couldn't have been that great, and she hadn't had time to practice in at least ten years. How good could she be? On the other hand, the stepsisters were great in Ever After. One of them was even kind of nice and had a happy ending. Also, she knocks the prince off a horse with an apple. That's just kind of cool.
In the movie novelization, it explains that she was bluffing her way out of it. But, who wouldn't do what Drew Barrymore says when she has a sword to your throat?
@unfabgirl I read that book, and it was actually great giving us more backstory. However, despite how the novel said she was bluffing, I still wouldn't be surprised if Danielle actually knew how to use a sword pretty well. She might have practiced in any spare time she had when not doing chores, but who knows? 🤷♀️
I hope they do Beauty and the Beast. I know Doug really likes the original. And I agree. The problem with the new film was that the 1991 movie was just so good. It was the first film to ever be nominated for Best Picture. Maybe I'll see it and maybe it'll actually exceed my expectations but it's going to have a difficult time competing with the original one.
Ella Enchanted the movie or the book? Because I 200% agree about the book, but the movie..... I honestly think it gets beat out pretty well by the Hillary Duff modern day version (which I weirdly like quite a lot). I mean, I enjoyed Ella Enchanted the movie, but it was just way too goofy to take seriously, particularly when the book is so much more nuanced and has such cool world-building, not to mention the fact that Ella and the prince spend ages getting to know each other and don't have the stupid start out hating each other thing.
@@dragongirl7978 Totally with you on the book's superiority over the movie. It had so much charm and emotion and world building, and knew when and how to do comedic scenes - the movie just feels more bouncy and like the entire thing's a silly romcom, which is okay if that's someone's thing, but I prefer the book any day
Yes. The thing I also loved about it was that it probably had one of the most diverse cast ever. Normally the ratio is really off, either too many whites, too blacks, too Asians etc. but this one imo was pretty well distributed. I like that the Prince was Asian, the Queen was black and King was white and no one bats and eye because it doesn't matter.
I was actually thinking of Ever After while watching this and I was like "that was such a good Cinderella movie but they're not even going to mention it since they're focusing on the old Cinderella movie and the Cinderella remake." and when he said that Ever After was the best I fangirled and felt proud of myself. x,D
Same! I was thinking about Ever After throughout the entire thing because it's underrated, and it's one of the few Cinderella based movies I actually like.
Sav-Chan right? I feel like Ever After is the perfect Cinderella movie I grew up watching it I love the original cinderella as well though Ever After is the best in my opinion. 😆👌
Isabell Romero I actually remember that I had dress similar to the one Drew Barrymore wore in the movie, whenever she was throwing apples at the prince. And I wore it to a family Halloween party. x) It was my favorite Cinderella then and now.
Sav-Chan come to think of it I never had a Cinderella dress not even for Halloween, childhood ruined 😭 lol jk but yeah Ever After is my favorite Cinderella story. 😄
Now when it comes to the live-action and '50s animation, I prefer the animation. Who really cares if the supporting cast has more screen time? Is that really a negative?
Hyper and Devil Boner are dating? One is a maniacal, psychopathic, man-slaughterer bent on the castration of all decency...and the other is Devil Boner.
I think because technically it's considered Broadway show and a TV movie not a theatrical released film. The Rogers and Hammerstein play has been show on TV many times with different casts. My first introduction to it was a 1965 VHS version with Ginger Rogers and Pat Carroll (fame for Disney villain Ursula) Though kinda campy it's my favorite version. As for me I never much cared for Brandy's vocal performance in the play which surprises me as she was at the time a very popular singer. To me she sounded like she had a cold. It could be because I saw the 1965 version first. Every thing else in that version was good, at least what I can remember.
When I was a kid and watched the scene where they destroyed the pink dress I was more sad for the mice than for Cinderella because the mice worked really hard. I'm waiting for the "revenge of the mice" remake ever since. And now I get why you say that the side characters got too much screen time in the original...
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Doug. Thank you for standing up for animated!Cinderella. I have yet to see the new one, (can't find a working torrent/stream online) so I have no actual opinion on the 2015 film, as a whole. I just hate when people shit all over Ilene Woods' portrayal of Cindy, simple because she isn't their definition of strong. Not every female role model has to be some shrieking harpy bitch, with an attitude problem. Also glad Ever After was brought up. It's the only other Cinderella film I love equally as much as the 1950 version.
There's this thing called a fire stick for your tv. You plug it in and it gives you access to all these movies and shows and shit. The thing is like 100 dollars, but it's a good investment. Only downside is that there is very little... Organization. Sure there is year by year, a-z and such, but there is a chaos in sifting through everything and finding a working or compatible link. Each movie/show is connected to links of varying quality and multiple sites that have multiple links. I like using it. I actually was able to watch Zootopia before the movie premiere in theaters. It's also not illegal. I don't know how, but somehow it's not illegal.
Now... I haven't been picky about the Disney remakes. I've even enjoyed a few of them. But the Cinderella remake? That was perhaps my least favorite yet. It was just.... boring? Forgettable? I dunno... I'm not a movie critic, I'm just a regular guy.
It was pretty forgettable. Like I enjoyed it, but it was just kind of like yeah, that was pretty. I found ones like Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King a lot more memorable... but probably not for the reasons they wanted me to. 😅😥
My main issue with it was that all I remembered was the dress. I didnt remember anything about the characters, fuck i even forgot that helena bonnem carter was the godmother, and I fucking adore her. All I could remember was that sparkly dress.
When I was watching it I thought: "If I was going to make a live-action Snow White I would make it exactly like this!" Except for the BS musical ending.
@@SantanicoDiabolical "Snow White: A Tale of Terror"is my"Snow White"version of"Ever After"AKA the Best of them All!I don't know why both those movies are SO underrated!X-(((
@@dragongirl7978 😀 Yes! Truth be told, before all these live-action remakes came out, I thought Disney or others were going to do modern versions of the fairy tales like Hillary Duff as Cinderella and Amanda Bynes as Snow White. They are great adaptations, still kept true to the story and created likeable characters
I agree. Ever After Is the better Cinderella movie. But if we're talking about a movie that's still a Cinderella story without focusing solely on "Cinderella", I like Confessions of an Ugly Step Sister. Like Maleficent, it gives us a chance to see the story from the perspective of someone whose suppose to be the villain. I like stories like this because it teaches us that there are two sides to everything. Neither of which are absolute truth. It all depends on your point of view.
Eh, I kinda didn't like the Maleficent movie because they tried to make you feel sorry for her. Don't get me wrong, I love the tragic villain but I liked it when Maleficent was just pure evil. Plus, it teaches kids (and sometimes adults) that there are people out who are evil just for the sake of being evil. But I see your point as well.
Draw Enidan People aren't evil just for the sake of being evil. I don't believe that. There's light and dark aspects to all of us. Ying and yang. Even the greatest villain is capable of doing good. Just look at Hitler. He's one of the most hated men in all history and for good reason. But that doesn't mean that he didn't have a few good points. He was an animal activist.
+Sehena Falconi that just sounds like an excuse but fair point that everyone isn't 100% evil or good, everyone is imperfect. But that just ruins the point of watching the movie where good and evil is more clear cut.
+Sehena Falconi While I understand the idea of deep villain I think a lot of the villain POV stories, Maleficent included, end up going too far the other way. It's one thing to add complexity to your villain, I'm all for that, but the result should be someone like the Shadow Man from Princess And The Frog, a guy with understandable motivations and sympathetic qualities but not with the villainy removed entirely. Maleficent basically recasts her as the hero, changing the other characters into villains or idiots to justify her actions. That's not adding complexity to the tale so much as moving it around.
laz kar HEY DUDE WANNA GO SKATEBOARDING? NOT RIGHT NOW MAN I GOTTA FINISH THIS PIZZA. DUDE I JUST LEARNED THIS ROCKING TUNE ON MY IVENIS!(I think that's how you spell it) LETS USE WORDS LIKE WICKED AND RADICAL LIKE ITS OUR STYLE FOR 20 YEARS!!!!
Original Cartoon in Disney were marvelous. Strong and independent female protagonist. While live action remake, to be honest its sucks. The Cinderella here lack of strong and independently female.
Oh no the supporting cast took up too much time in a animated movie aimed at children. Like I don't think one can top the other cause one is for young children who don't care about scenes where Cinderella and the prince walk down a street and talk about their feelings. If you wanna watch one for wonderment and nostalgia then the animated one is fine. If you want slightly more character interaction then the new one is for you. But watching all of them for different viewpoints on the characters is just as good.
Exactly! Who cares about the protagonist being 3-dimensional or having "muh character development", when the story is told from a 2nd person perspective. People are too used to stories told from the 1st or 3rd perspective that they fail to see the merits of a movie that puts the focus on something different.
+mark Ervine (Lizard knight) Exactly what i was thinking...people seem to forget that the original Cinderella was a kids movie aimed at kids...of course they are going to have little mouses singing, while the newer one was more aimed at young adults, hence the feelings talk and dramatic stuff.
+mark Ervine (Lizard knight) This is why I don't like these live action remakes. they reinforce the idea that animation is a "children's only" medium and run on the assumption adults can't enjoy an animated film as well.
You should see the video, it's an hour long bashing on sibling rivalry (though his bro does not like it either). Its a fun watch if you have a similar mindset and no friend to bash the movie with,
Honestly, new Cinderella is magical and all but there's a reason why old Cinderella is one of Disney's most popular and most loved princesses. As they say, nothing can beat the original.
No, Disney has made another one coming out in Feb. 2017 I think. Look up the trailer. Emma Watson is Belle. Looks like it could be good. The piano music in the beginning is so nostalgic!
21:22 Ironically, this is exactly how I feel about the Andrew Garfield version of Spider-Man. He looks the part, sounds the part, but he isn't actually playing the part. And to quote his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory reference, the Maguire version of Parker was an actual relatable nerd while the Garfield version was a sexy smoldering power fantasy. We can't relate to Garfield version because the writers put so many contradicting attributes into him because they wanted to pander to so many different demographics. He's apparently supposed to be shy and insecure, but he's already walking around with a confident bounce in his step and doesn't really seem to care what people think of him. He's supposed to be a wimp, but he is already standing up to Flash Thompson, despite the fact that he gets the crap beat out of him. At least with Maguire, we could relate to him because he acted like a real outcast in high school: he didn't stand up for himself, he had a guy raspy voice, he was a bit of a wimp, he had pretty poor social skills, etc.
Elijah Anderson Clearly Tom Holland is the best actor for Spider-Man, and that's not a joke. He is young, so he fits more in a highschool environment, he actually talks and walks like a teenager, and he does seem kinda like an outcast, with him only having one friend that we have seen, the guy in the trailer, and he doesn't talk to the girl he is interested in from what we have seen from the trailer, Liz Allen. People complained about how he acted in Civil War, but I liked the way he acted, excited, not as heroic, because he is a teen, and he clearly wants to impress his idol Tony Stark. That's just my opinion though, and people will obviously say Tobey or Garfield is better
+Vexxed Sprites I hope you meant that being multiracial doesn't make it a good film, and not that being multiracial makes it bad. If it's the former, then I agree with you. If it's the latter, you are quite racist, haha.
Old Cinderella: good mix of good characteristics and bad characteristics New Cinderella: attempted to create a strong female lead, resulted in a possible Mary Sue. I should probably check the Mary Sue limitus test.
As a fellow writer, I wholeheartedly agree. That's why I couldn't get into franchises like Twilight and House of Night - the main character was TOO good, and it was like the writers were afraid that flaws would make them UNlikeable and UNrelatable. The best characters are the ones with genuine flaws that make them MORE human, like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson and Katniss Everdeen.
+pandafeels Katniss Everdeen and Harry Potter are still Mary Sues. Harry less so - the problems with the HP series lie less in those tropes, much more in others. And House of Night-Zoey "good"? Well, yeah, they SAY that she is, but when you actually read what is happening, you see that Zoey is a hypocritical, lying, deceiving, manipulative, hateful, spiteful, unforgiving, overhorny while slutshaming and just overall despicable dumbfuck. She has literally no redeeming traits whatsoever. Yes, she is a Mary Sue, but that's because of how the other characters and the narrative treat her not because of her actual actions or words.
TheYasmineFlower yeah, the house of night had such promise in the first book.... And severely disappointed me characterwise thereafter. Percy will always be a favourite. Harry grated on me during book 5 but redeemed himself. Katniss annoyed me.
To be honest (and this is just my opinion, so don't get upset over this), but I believe that the remake just has no reason to exist. I feel, as if, it was made just for the sole purpose of getting some cash... right back into Disney's everlasting wallet (and, as always, they succeeded on that part). I found the remake to just be lacking in many different ways. Now, don't get me wrong here; I did find some good to be salvaged... such as the actors (I thought they all did a phenomenal job), the sets were quite lavish (even if some of it was CGI, like the Royal Palace for example) and the music, as with many Disney films, was just beautiful. But otherwise, to me, it didn't have the same charm and *ahem* magic as the animated one had. Now, again, if you do not like my opinion... then that's okay. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, after all. If you liked the remake or even hated the animated one (hey, there has to be someone out there that didn't quite enjoy the animated classic), then I respect your opinion in the end. Have an awesome one!
What the fuck do you know?! Cinderella in the original film instead of having an actual character, had so little screen time that all of her personality was limited to just being kind, annoyed and snarky. We didn't even get to have real interactions between her and anyone of her stepfamily. The cat-and-mouse chase scenes that took place every act took valuable time that could have been spend on more important stuff.
it made me kinda sad that you had to clarify so much that this was your opinion and that its ok for others to disagree and have a different one. But i guess that's kind of necessary on the internet these days.. anyway, I agree with your point of view!
0deadx21 you're a idiot, who doesn't appreciate original writing. No one here respects you since you thought she was hot, and there fore it's a better movie. Get some game you pathetic douche
0deadx21 I agree completely with you, it honestly had no point. I mean maybe I was missing something, but was there really demand for a remake just to explore the character better?
jmangamer98 So what? So was that 2004 Hillary Duff movie. But that's not an actual Cinderella movie. Same thing with Ever After. The characters are not the actual characters from Cinderella, which is what real Cinderella movies need to actually be called Cinderella movies. So therefore, it's not one. It may be based on the story of Cinderella, but it's not a real Cinderella movie.
the look of terror on Cinderella when She steps out of bounds with her stepmother or when comes up to her inspect her dress then sicks her daughters on her.
+Anaïs Ranger A few Cinderella movies did that. Ever after, Ella Enchanted, that diverse musical with Brandy, The Glass Slipper (one of my favorites). Cindy which turned it around nicely on who she was in love with. Even the Muppet version did it. While some go with the 5 nights of repeated meetings at the ball Cinderella coming and going so that you could get the feeling that the two don't just fall in love instantly after one night. To sum it up yeah this Cinderella shouldn't be treated like they did something extraordinary when so many others have already done it. Although Ever After and Ella Enchanted allowed for more time for a real relationship to form.
+Anaïs Ranger The part where the prince and Cinderella meet before the ball is a pretty common motif in many variations. In the version recorded by the Brothers Grimm, the ball lasts for three days, so they meet twice before the whole ordeal with the slipper. In Three Gifts For Cinderella, a Czechoslovak version of the fairy tale, there isn't even a ball, they just meet in church three Sundays in a row. In the movie version of Three Gifts For Cinderella, the prince sees Cinderella once at the stepmother's farm, once in the guise of a hunter and only then at the ball. So, it's not really anything new.
I come back to this video every now and then because I enjoy a lot of the jokes and the character interactions in it and such, but also because Ever After is one of my most favorite movies, and it delights me to see it being appreciated tbh
I've got it on VHS AND DVD. Trust me you'll love it. It's got Leonardo Da Vinci, the step mother has a relatable back story, the step sisters do an incredible job, as do the other supporting actors. They play a scene that I recently found out was a sample of a real moment in history after a city lost a battle and the women were allowed to leave free and clear under just one condition. Just watch it.
+Samuel Nguyen As a villain, have you thought about my agenda in this? What do you think I could get from this? I don't know, maybe with enough exposure, Doug's fans will go and watch it on Netflix, increasing the chance of getting a season 3. Which in turn would allow me to know what the hell happens and get me out of unemployment (since I don't seem to exist in the new 52).
Leila Kramer It figures you like the Cinderella that doesn't care about anything human-related - her dead parents, her house, her stepfamily. She gives about as much damn as the filmmakers, which is hardly any.
Dude why do you keep coming back here? For the past several months, you've made tons of hateful and condescending replies to those who just wanna say they appreciate the original Cinderella. No one is wrong here buddy. Relax already :/
The Prince is interesting in ever after as well and smart. They have time to know eachother even though Danielle lies to him about her position. It's historically accurate in costuming. I loved it
+poop But c'mon!! You and I both know that they're both the exact same movie, just slightly different interpretations. Now if you were to compare Maleficent and the original Sleeping Beauty movie, then yeah!!!! there would be a whole lot of differences, obviously.
+poop Check out "The Glass Slipper" from 1955, that has a better Ella. Societal rebel that is disliked for having short hair, lack of makeup, and a temper, and wears a stolen dress and slippers to the ball.
+Kaitlyn Avila He already did a Disneycember on it and said that they were practically the same story. The biggest change is the technology for split screen etc.
+Fire Bandit He never did one for The Parent Trap, just King Kong. All he did for The Parent Trap movies was make Disneycember reviews for both. And he said both were about as good as each other.
Well jeez...I am surprised the critic didn't refute Hyper's argument by mentioning that if live action Cinderella is more independent then why does she stay in that house just because ofher parents' wishes? It's like how Elsa couldn't just tell Anna the truth after her parents died...
+Emiko Gale I found the whole argument absurd. People who are in abusive relationships tend to stay with there abusers regardless of what other people tell them. It's a big problem. The new movie portrayed the human condition more accurately, Even Cinderella leaving the house behind in the end just signifies the growth she has gone through. She realizes that caring for her self is much more important than caring for her father's house.
+Emiko Gale because Elsa was afraid of killing her sister with her powers, you know how Anna was always so happy go lucky and curious if Elsa had told her she had powers inevitably Anna is going to pressure Elsa into showing them and since she didn't know how to control them one wrong move them BAM! Frozen Anna anyone?
+Rhetoric&Discourse but wouldn't that be a point for the original? from just seeing this the remake has the abuse happen after cinderella becomes an adult unlike the original that had cinderella brainwashed. (i haven't seen the remake, so feel free to correct me otherwise)
+Tom Tinker Adults get into abusive relationships all the time. Just look at the men and women out there have to deal with being beaten, along with verbal and phycological abuse. Being an adult doesn't make you immune to abuse.
Glad that I am not the only one who loves "Ever After." Watched it so many times with my mom growing up. As much as I love the original Cinderella, I always felt that the most important take away from the movie was no matter how old you get, it's okay to have dreams for the future. As for Ever After, Danielle is kind, witty and fierce. Hell, she beat the prince up by accident when she thought he was a horse thief. She can stick up for herself. Plus, I felt her and the prince had more chemistry as the movie goes on.
THANK YOU, CRITIC, FOR REMINDING EVERYONE THAT THE ORIGINAL CINDERELLA WAS NOT AS BLAND AS MOST THINK!!!
That doesn't mean the original Cinderella isn't a mess. Her personality is remarkably inconsistent.
really? When I didn't notice
"Who thought that?" Said the guy who prefers the remake with honest shock. "Who thinks it's bland?!"
@@0deadx21 And the remake isnt?!
No.
+Trophies She's a little more expressive and can be pretty sassy at times. Also has a very nice hairstyle after she transformed.
+pharaohyami5000 plus Cinderella DOES want to smack that dang cat when he misbehaves
Dejay Page I forgot Lucifer was in the live action. One scene of chasing mice and loathing around near the end of the movie, it was a pretty big gap for it to be seen again.
I love how channel awesome has like, 3 actors, yet they still manage to portray a crap ton of roles.
can I ask how old you are? genuinely just curious
+Decimator Omega I forget how often Benny's actor gets beat on
+Blu Dj There's also Orlando Belisle, Trevor Mueller, Beth Elderkin and if necessary, there's Jim's wife Joanna and Doug's ex-girlfriend Dayna Munday
+Decimator Omega What about Shmuck?
Theros Rex You mean Doug or the Dark City form played by Trevor Mueller?
Cinderella is so important to me. As someone who grew up with an abusive parent and step parent (luckily I also grew up with an Amazing parent and step parent on the other side) I could look at someone who never let the cruelty of others affect her own personality. She never let a cruel world make her cruel. There was no way out of her situation, so instead she made the best out of it and remained a caring person.
Liv Pip I hope you married a prince or something
This is why The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tangled are important to me, I went through abusive family relationships and ended up feeling trapped like those characters. My husband is actually my prince, as he left everything he knew behind and drove across six states in an old car just to be with me :) we have our own little fairy tale and I'm so happy even to this day. ^.^
RedRoseSeptember22 It’s good to know sometimes fairy tales come true
So Cinderella helps an old lady and gets a trip to the ball, but Snow White does it she gets poisoned?
When we inevitably get our Snow White remake, let Cinderella appear in White’s dream showing how she helped a woman and got rewarded which leads to White swearing on Hades’ behalf to drag her down to hell.
@@firewolf950tfwgaming7 Ahahahahahahahhaha oh mu God please let that happen i would actually want a snow white remake just for that.
it was the wrong person
...yeah...she's not really lucky :/
@@fabtrash Well said.
It depends on who you help. You can be nice (and should be) but the actions of others and what they do to you, are out of your control.
Snow White - old woman (who was selling Apples) : bad (The Witch in disgust)
Cinderella 2.0 - Old woman (who wanted a drink) : good
Beast (Beauty and the Beast) : horric - Woman looking for shelter: Nutreul good.
Gaby Droz I guess white blonde supremacy
+Julia Lilienstein: sure, but Disney adaptations p much never serve the same purpose as the story they’re based on
If that were the case (not 100 percent certain) then the remake is even worse since she already has freedom
Cinderella: A Twist In Time, beats both even if it's a sequel. The Prince has more character, Cinderella is stronger as a individual, her sister is likeable and the villain is twisted.
Elle Calladine I like both the orginal and twist in time
Yess my favorite Disney movie
Definitely my favorite Direct to DVD sequel.
yeah even i gotta admit where i was at the point i was gonna stop caring about disney sequels but cinderella 3 surprised in unexpected ways. it's not perfect cause there are some flaws to it but it is an amazing sequel even when it had no real reason to be.
Yes! It's a hidden gem of a direct-to-DVD sequel.
I think Cinderella is not as much about her being passive but it is about a girl being abused and pulling it through, saving herself out of the situation by being kind and not having her spirit broken.
Exactly! Also, I feel like she was emotionally manipulated/guilt-tripped into staying.
When you started this debate, I was like "um you're both wasting your time. Ever After is clearly better than both."
I'm glad we came to the same conclusion.
true
+Shalyce Sam Mutchie same
I agree and thinking the same thing.
+Mattheos Clemence (Kangiwi) really? haven't seen it but it looked shit

Gasp! I wasn't expecting America Anime to be here!
+Anime America :) Same here! Watching this until they mentioned it, all I was thinking about WAS Ever After. It's my favorite Cinderella movie.
OMG ANIME AMERICA!!!!!! XD
It's funny that this guy has been here longer then you and your almost beat him in subscribers and some people have been here for like a year and have more or 2 million (leafyishere and pyrocynical etc..)
+yorvic it's funny that no one cares on what you say
In Cinderella 3 Prince Charming jumps out of window so that's fun
I didn't like all the cartoony sfx.
Which sucks a woman can't have freedom until she marries but when she marries she still has no freedom.
Honestly Lady Tremaine's death stare is scary af!
hell ya
As much as I loved the original cinderella as a little kid, that stare scared the living shit of me.
The Doctor agreed
I'm 30 years old and STILL cannot look at it.
The Doctor So...the hag finally died?
It's sad critics don't even realise that they forgot what a strong character SHOULD be.
UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE FUCKING MILLENIUM
Because criticism of wahmen means feminists will attack you on Twitter
Strong character = Well written character
It's really disheartening to see how far down the dumpster "strong female character" has gone in the film industry. Where the hell are the great characters who are badass and deep like the freaking 1990s with the likes of Ellen Ripley or Princess Leah. Where the hell did all the writing quality go?
probably cuz some thought a woman character like animated cinderalla made woman look weak and snivelly
You forgot to mention in Ever After that Leonardo Da Vinci replaced the fairy godmother thats like 50 points for originality
One of my favorite aspects of the film.
Who needs a fairy godmother when you've got Leonardo Da Fucking Vinci
@@princesspeasant4536 OK, now that gives his roles in Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood a new perspective. Building Ezio's gadgets on his Hidden Blade, decoding the pages of Altair's Codex, giving him a freaking HANG GLIDER, it all fits now!

@@GinHindew110 Oh right, the guy who opened a door! He did say he'd go down in history, didn't he? 😂🤣
People who say the original Cinderella sucked CLEARLY did not watch it.
Why is that?
did you watch the video?
I watched it. I hate it.
@@jennifergriel861 why?
I watched it several times and I never particularly liked it, even as a child. Even back then I found Cinderella to be a vain golddigger and the mice-cat story waaay to long and annoying. I could never comprehend how you can advertise a "relationship" as true love when all they do is find each other hot and dance for 5 mins silently. The Prince doesn't even talk with her! Hell, he doesn't even have a name!! I could NEVER relate to that.
When I was like 7-9, I had to write a Cinderella story. I wrote it about crocodiles. It tool place in the swamp and her name was Crocerella.
I applaud you
Now this is great!
Thank you.
Okay, I wanna read that story now! XD XD
I played as the fairy godmother in a French play when I was in elementary school and I did a pretty good job!
Oh well. Ce la vie!!!😉
1950 version: Cinderella is the interesting character and the Prince is the blandest character.
2015 version: The Prince is the interesting character and Cinderella is the blandest character.
Thanks. Someone who doesnt get blind by all the cg
"Ironic, isn't it"
- Palpatine
"Ever After" version: BOTH Cinderella and the Prince are interesting and well written characters.
2015 Cinderella should have been renamed with the Prince.
Why do you think the 2015 is bland???
@@marcohidalgo1101plus the manager is an amazing "fairy god mother" who helps Sam prepare for the party.
Thank you for your Main Character explanation. I hate "Perfect" characters. And there are so many main characters which are like this now and I can't stand them because they are just not interesting! Give me a flawed interesting character over a boring perfect one any day.
CindyBob666 Yeah, especially in the recent Disney live action movies.
Mary Sues need to die off.
"Ah, yes, I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door!" This line is proof enough that Ever After is the best Cinderella movie!
You take that back mat plat is amizing
JK- 27 Note I never said Matpat sucks. I said his show Deadlock was not very good in my opinion. It had the potential to be really good, all he would have to do is come to an actual conclusion after all the points had been made instead of just "Okay arbitrarily we've reached a tie. Comment below to decide who wins!". Just made the whole thing predictable and formulaic instead of actually conveying anyone's overall opinions. Matpat is indeed great. Deadlock wasn't.
+Tyler van de Ven oh, sorry
+Tyler van de Ven Great people can have bad ideas, Demo Reel shows that pretty well :P

If the new Beauty and the Beast is a competition to the animated movie.
That Frollo cereal joke is hilarious! "Be mine or you will STARVE!" XD
He‘s called Prince Florian, that’s official but still not in the movie.
Who is Phillip? And which movie are you talking about?

I agree
+pharaohyami5000 I don't think I'm gonna sugarcoat it anymore. But...I don't get why people like you feel like you need to compare the original animated version to the live-action remake at all. They're both the same movie, the same story. Just different interpretations. In my opinion...I'd say Ever After is the better Cinderella film than both Disney versions.
+Neo-Xgray87
That's the thing. Which one is better? Which one had a better story? Which one did the original story better? And so on.
jthedog Not to mention that uh...this fairy tale has been re-told like a billion times now. I mean really! There's like over a billion version of this story that has been retold over the last 60 years now. I mean, I'm sure that you know the characters and the story by heart, regardless of which version you're more familiar with. It's the same story, just slightly different interpretation. Simple as that.
Personally I think the old is better
Me too i like the old cinderella from 1950

+XanderVJ She's not very assertive, now that I think of it.
+XanderVJ Yeah, is this Cinderella or Audrey from Sleeping Beauty?
Hope you enjoy Ever After and hear your thoughts on it.
+FinestFantasyVI so because he is more of a selfinsert he is a better caracter?
Oh sweet sweet sanity at 17:56
I wondered over the same thing.
Then asked me what I thought, I had this moment of 'Crap I'm about to ruin this for her.'
I hadn't refined my response to what I said above but basically said that it looked nice but she did nothing, she brought nothing to the story, they made the prince more interesting than her, the rats were for the most part pointless, and somehow they took some of the good parts of Ever After and made it horribly dull, the Fairy God Mother was channeling Jack Sparrow so hard I thought HBC was drunk
+0deadx21 "You idiot! You big dumb head! Moo!" That's all I got from you.
My thought about the original Cinderella is that maybe Cinderella didn’t get much screen time because we are made to know as much about Cinderella has she knows about herself, being trapped your whole life and not being able to figure out anything about yourself
I'm sorry the original is just a classic, plain and simple. The re-make was good but just didn't capture my attention like the 1950's version.

Sakura Saotome nice
Honestly, I think Three Wishes is so much better than Ever After. Everyone should watch it.
I wish someone had released that movie with English subtitles. It sounds great!
Agreed on the apple thing. I mean what a shot, haha!
@unfabgirl I read that book, and it was actually great giving us more backstory. However, despite how the novel said she was bluffing, I still wouldn't be surprised if Danielle actually knew how to use a sword pretty well. She might have practiced in any spare time she had when not doing chores, but who knows? 🤷♀️
I swear during the whole review, i was bitching about why they didn´t choose Ever After for the Old Vs New. The ending was surprising
same!
Me too! I especially feel that the new Cinderella was heavily based on Ever After but didn't manage to pull it off.
Me too. I'd watch scenes and go, "Wait they did that in Ever After. And that, and that! WTH?" But Ever did it better of course.
Yeah, the new Cinderella is just a copy and paste of Ever After and The Slipper and The Rose with glitter dumped on it.

We'll see.

Ever After and Ella Enchanted were the best versions
Ella Enchanted the movie or the book? Because I 200% agree about the book, but the movie..... I honestly think it gets beat out pretty well by the Hillary Duff modern day version (which I weirdly like quite a lot). I mean, I enjoyed Ella Enchanted the movie, but it was just way too goofy to take seriously, particularly when the book is so much more nuanced and has such cool world-building, not to mention the fact that Ella and the prince spend ages getting to know each other and don't have the stupid start out hating each other thing.
Hello fellow Ella Enchanted fan!!!
@@dragongirl7978 Totally with you on the book's superiority over the movie. It had so much charm and emotion and world building, and knew when and how to do comedic scenes - the movie just feels more bouncy and like the entire thing's a silly romcom, which is okay if that's someone's thing, but I prefer the book any day
Ever After was one of my 1998 favorite movies
Ella enchanted with Anne Hathaway was a trash movie. I liked it as a kid, but not even nostalgia could blind me from it's stupidity.😐
The thing I loved most about Ever After was that Leonardo Da Vinci was the fairy godmother.

I really liked the Brandi & Whitney Houston version of Cinderella, yeah it was a bit hammy but it was very enjoyable imo.
+Charlotte The songs were super memorable too
+Charlotte My favourite is "Tri orísky pro Popelku" ČSSR classic popular also in Scandinavia!
Same here. But ever After does take the win logically. But I'll still be a sucker for Robert&Hammerstein's Cinderella with Brandy :)
+Charlotte :) Same here! I love watching that one. That, the Disney one, Ever After and the Hilary Duff one are also enjoyable to me.
Same here. :)
Now when it comes to the live-action and '50s animation, I prefer the animation. Who really cares if the supporting cast has more screen time? Is that really a negative?
As long as they don’t distract from the main cast.

+Classysaia Amen, sister! The family dynamics are great and I loved the costumes!
Their version follows the theatrical version you would find on broadway
yes! oh my goodness!!
Yea you would think the black guy would mention it. Whitney fucking slayed in that movie.

It was pretty forgettable. Like I enjoyed it, but it was just kind of like yeah, that was pretty. I found ones like Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King a lot more memorable... but probably not for the reasons they wanted me to. 😅😥

+YuukitheMighty1 I'm sure it is but they're talking about Ever After.
Marco Hidalgo With previous people in the discussion trying not to give spoilers, yes.
But that just ruins the point of watching the movie where good and evil is more clear cut.
drakke125Channel No, it doesn't. I like it movies challenge you.

What's a 'guy raspy voice'?
+musicaltheatergeek79
I meant 'shy, raspy voice'
Wait, people complained about how he acted in _Civil War_?
But the new Spider-man, though. Tom Holland is great!
the best Cinderella is the musical they did with Brandy and Whitney Houston. It was interesting and multiracial and beautiful
+Eboni Fuller
alto not necessarilly historically accurate
+Hromovlad1
magic isn't historically accurate either love 💖
+Vexxed Sprites how,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
+Hromovlad1 Nor is any adaptation of Cinderella. :/
+Vexxed Sprites I hope you meant that being multiracial doesn't make it a good film, and not that being multiracial makes it bad. If it's the former, then I agree with you. If it's the latter, you are quite racist, haha.
Old Cinderella: good mix of good characteristics and bad characteristics
New Cinderella: attempted to create a strong female lead, resulted in a possible Mary Sue.
I should probably check the Mary Sue limitus test.
I think you pretty much nailed it.
There in lays my reason that Movie 'Mary Sues' are over looked and 'adored' while us writers have to deal with this shit.
People with creative minds know the difference between a good developed character and just plain Mary Sue.
Yet when a character in a big franchised film has virtually 'no flaws' they are over looked and loved. Yeah, the world is giant hypocrite.
0deadx21 Okay, there is no lie on that one... I respect your opinion.
it made me kinda sad that you had to clarify so much that this was your opinion and that its ok for others to disagree and have a different one.
Do old versus new on Lemony Snickets a series of unfortunate events.
Yeah nostalgia critic lemony Snicket
24:09 "Because it's MY show, and I can do whatever the goddamn hell I want!"
Yes, Ever After IS the best Cinderella movie!
Also, one of the dudes at Big Cat Rescue is a Viner, go check that out!
Agreed! Cate Blanchett is good but Angelica Houston was magnificent!
No it's not. It's not a Cinderella movie at all. It doesn't even have Cinderella characters. It doesn't count as one.
+YTWarrior100 ....it's literally called "a cinderella story"....
jmangamer98 So what? So was that 2004 Hillary Duff movie. But that's not an actual Cinderella movie. Same thing with Ever After. The characters are not the actual characters from Cinderella, which is what real Cinderella movies need to actually be called Cinderella movies. So therefore, it's not one. It may be based on the story of Cinderella, but it's not a real Cinderella movie.
YES! Old vs New is back! Love this series!
Really?! Not a single Robb Stark reference?!
+Adam Grunther someone dressed as Rob should have come in as Santa Christ
+Adam Grunther who?
King in the North!
the look of terror on Cinderella when She steps out of bounds with her stepmother or when comes up to her inspect her dress then sicks her daughters on her.
Ever after. They took the "they met before" from Ever after.
+Anaïs Ranger YEEEESS!!!
I suppose. You make a valid argument. I didn't enjoy this version.
That's because in the original opera, they DID meet prior to the ball.
Critic, you should do Old Carrie vs New Carrie
There are three versions of it now (one from 76, one from 02 and one from 13). Each has its ups and downs.
There are actually four carries
V N OLD
@@elyssa9643 I think one of those is a "sequel" rather than a remake...
@@donnamitsuki281 right well there at least still 3 carries
I want the Critic to do this with all of the Disney reboots. Like Maleficent, The Jungle Book, Beauty and The Beast, and The Lion King.
Wait, did you say The Lion King?!
I come back to this video every now and then because I enjoy a lot of the jokes and the character interactions in it and such, but also because Ever After is one of my most favorite movies, and it delights me to see it being appreciated tbh
I've never seen Ever After, but now I kind of want to...
It's beautiful, it's a piece of art. Well worth the watch and quite underrated.
great minds think alike
i loved ever after
DO IT
I've got it on VHS AND DVD. Just watch it.
best movie ever!!
Who thinks Doug should do Young Justice Vlogs?
Agreed! Like to promote this! Make this happen!
+Icicle Jr But it's incomplete. Why would you want to torture him by making him watch an awesome show with no ending?
+Icicle Jr I want him to talk about Teen Titans! The good one, not the shitty new one.
Ya that would be cool
+Samuel Nguyen
As a villain, have you thought about my agenda in this?
What do you think I could get from this?
I don't know, maybe with enough exposure, Doug's fans will go and watch it on Netflix, increasing the chance of getting a season 3.
Which in turn would allow me to know what the hell happens and get me out of unemployment (since I don't seem to exist in the new 52).
Nice animal farm reference. All animals are equal, but, some are more equal than others.
I still need to read that book.
Ironically the Cinderella I watched most as a kid was the 1997 Rodger and Hammerstein one
Annie Fleming THANK YOU
Yes, I loved that movie!
The old Cinderella is better. My opinion don't hate on me please.
(Insert hateful sentence)
Leila Kramer Finally someone who agrees with me!
GRRRRR YOUR OPINION IS DIFFERENT TO MINE WHICH COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY ANGERS ME!!!
Huh Castro dies a mere six months later after seeing Benny's list, a coincidence? Maybe?
Brandy is my only Cinderella.
Impossible for a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage....
sweetcinnamonpnchkin Impossible, for a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in
Marriage
+taymartin58 Ten thousand points. I love Ever After, but Brandy is my damn Cinderella.
+taymartin58 Impossible, things are happening everyday!
I loved in that Cinderella movie!!!
The Prince is interesting in ever after as well and smart. They have time to know eachother even though Danielle lies to him about her position. It's historically accurate in costuming. I loved it
Old has best Cinderella. Nuff said
+poop But c'mon!! You and I both know that they're both the exact same movie, just slightly different interpretations. Now if you were to compare Maleficent and the original Sleeping Beauty movie, then yeah!!!! there would be a whole lot of differences, obviously.
New is hot tho
+poop Check out "The Glass Slipper" from 1955, that has a better Ella. Societal rebel that is disliked for having short hair, lack of makeup, and a temper, and wears a stolen dress and slippers to the ball.
TheZombini okay I will. still think Lily James is hot tho
For the next "Old vs New" you should do either "The Parent Trap" or "King Kong"
+Kaitlyn Avila He's done one on "King Kong" years ago actually.
+Kaitlyn Avila
He already did a Disneycember on it and said that they were practically the same story. The biggest change is the technology for split screen etc.
+Kaitlyn Avila He actually did both of those. I think you have to hunt for it because they might not be under old vs new
+GeweldigWereld Yeah, he did King Kong once, so I would like to see him do one on The Parent Trap. :D
+Emiko Gale Uh he did.
