    Excellent video! Thank you for the help. They hit my 2020 F250 Platinum last week in San Antonio in the parking lot of the Courtyard hotel at the RIM at 4:30p - broad daylight, and busy. Also hit a Raptor. Cop said he had pending vehicle break-in calls at the other 2 hotels next to mine, then at La Cantera mall (he said probably all F series trucks). They are looking for guns - opened my center console and back seat, took nothing from my truck (same for Raptor guy, whose gun was in a truck safe). Just swapped my handle yesterday - $250 for handle from Ford dealer parts (just give them your VIN to match the part), and quoted $105 for paint (which I'll do next week) - I did the labor. The only mod I did relative to video is I drilled a hole on the bottom sheet metal mounting tab to accommodate the plastic alignment pin on the handle that's next to the mounting bolt. You'll see a second hole on the top sheet metal tab to accept the alignment pin on the standard handle, but now that you are using the passenger handle turned upside-down, you either need to drill the hole on the bottom tab, or you'll need to shave the alignment pin from the handle to allow for flush mounting.

    • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Mark - yes, more stable to drill the hole like you did. I just bent the tab down, but sorta wish I would’ve taken the extra minute to do that.. LOL - I’ve had no problems luckily.
      All of mine were broken into in that same area! Ridiculous. The only thing I have noticed after all this time is the facia of the inside handle, the one you pop off to back out those two screws, now when my knee rests on it, it squeaks… thinking some insulation tape is in order! Thanks again for the comments buddy.

    I have a 2018 Lariat with the passive entry. Can the door handle be disassembled from the unpainted base and reassembled onto the painted base? This way I could use the factory painted handle base without having to get the new one painted. Also, is the drivers door the only one that is vulnerable or are the other doors breachable also. Thanks

    • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will try to answer - the drivers door handle plate has a huge hole where the tumbler goes thru - the other doors do not.
      So the idea is to use the passenger side assembly because it doesn’t have the hole. I don’t know if you can buy just the plate - but even if you did the painted one (Existing one) would have the hole. I hope that makes sense.

  • @danconatser8699
    @danconatser8699 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, thanks. I realize putting in the passenger handle is the "best" solution. But wouldn't just cutting out the actuator bar from the tumbler do the same? for no cost? and also without a manual key you are now hoping that your battery never dies in truck or hope the trucks locking electronics never fail?

    • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought I responded - if I already did, I apologize. Yes it would; however they will still attempt to twist the tumbler because it’s there and possible damage the door - once the tumbler is twisted then you’ll have big hole there. On the key part I added somewhere in this thread about installing a jumper hookup incase your battery goes dead - you won’t need to get under the hood to power your truck up.

    I just got my 2017 f350 broke into in San Antonio right next to la cantera, they took my gun and my radar. I love this video, you mentioned that we need to remove the rod inside the truck and that we would not be able to use the key. Dumb question, but I can still unlock the truck with my remote and open the door on driver side, correct?
    also, they disconnected my horn before they broke in. I have a camera in my truck and they were quick that the camera recorded after they already broke in and took my stuff. On my camera facing inside, I can see my interior lights flashing but did not hear the horn. when I got home I set my alarm and did not hear the horn, I looked in front of my grill and notice they disconnected the horn. Now I am thinking about hard wiring the horn at a different location and rig the horn wires to look factory, so when they think they unplugged the horn, its actually hard wired and horn will work.

    • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yessir - this just removes the rod that the “key” turns - the lock actuator still works the same - as well as the finger sensors. Sorry this happened to you brother. • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe in the comments - we’ve covered that a few times, but yes, you could but the fact there is still a tumbler there invites them to attempt the break in. When there is no tumbler the chances are greater they walk away. If they have already attempted the break in - then you have loose, broken tumbler in the door - or a big hole where it was.

    • @fiveprices5

    guessing that I could just use existing handle and plug the hole where the lock was? Was thinking if battery died, I could just send power back through the trailer lights, but I think there is a relay on that, so thinking of dropping a small fused wire off the battery under the hood, and down low where I could connect 12v so I could get enough power to unlock doors and pop hood. any thoughts on this

    Btw I have the jumper cable that had a plug in the grill so you don’t need to open the hood to attach the jumper cables, so if the battery dies, I just hook my truck to someone’s car and I have power.

    This has happened to me with my 2018 F250 twice in San Antonio. I asked dealer about it and he said won’t fit on Platinum?? Do you know otherwise?

    • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't "know" otherwise 100% - but i can tell you i have seen no difference in the doors nor the door handle from the platinum to the FX or any lariat (other than trim). It would be hard to believe Ford would make a "special" door just for platinum, which is merely a trim and addition package.

      In both cases - my 2015 f250 and this one, they pulled the wires on the horn - on the 15 Ford made it real easy to reach the wires through the grille. However, you would CERTAINLY know if they broke in this way

    • @danconatser8699

      @@tsmith1898 So I guess I will also look for a way to reroute the horn wires. Or just move the horn? But the key is simply to make it harder to steal your truck, and they move on to the one next to it. Same way I protect my house. Sad that we need to do all this these days. Again, thanks for taking the time to make a video to help the other F150 owners.

      On my 2015 F250 - they reached into the front grille and pulled the wires from my horn -- Ford in their wisdom put the horn right where it is accessible from the front to disconnect. Im not exactly sure on this new model where the horn is - however, i dont think they cared too much about the horn going off - they have no intentions of staying that long.

    Great idea but what do you do if your battery is dead? Now you have no way to get into your truck except to call a locksmith to break into it.

    • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I covered that below a couple times. Many ways to avoid that. I dropped I positive lead from the battery down through the front bumper so I could jump the truck w/o opening the hood - small battery pack is enough to allow the doors to open

  • @tsmith1898

      This was a concern of mine as well. I spend a lot of time on seldom traveled trails in Wyoming in deadly cold winter. If I could not get into my truck due to a dead battery it could be a REAL problem.

    • @tsmith1898
      @tsmith1898  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@davidburchard3178 David - a buddy and I devised a "jumper" cable of sorts that hangs down behind the grill with two solid connectors - so if this happens - i can hook a battery or battery pack directly to it and power the battery - certainly enough to unlock the doors - but the cables are large enough to jump the entire truck if need be.

    It's not exactly the same. You can't support the latch cable with out it falling loose. You have to rig it to get it to work. Use the one from the rear driver's side. Move it to the front or just buy a new driver's passenger latch.

      @tsmith1898  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Surely, but when there is no visible tumbler they have no reason to tear up your door. if they see the tumbler they will attempt to break in and tear the handle up anyway (they don't know the rod is gone). with this method, they have nothing to break - its all gone.
