Great summary. I have the book and am about to commence reading it.
One thing I'd add about treating employees well. It's best to keep all your staff on an even playing field. If you have one or more outstanding employees, you need to avoid 'playing favorites' because it can destroy morale.
I have caught myself doing this. Here's how I solved it: "Keep a professional distance" from employees (and customers too, but that's a story for another day). What I mean is, if your intention is to 'treat your employees well', you don't have to make them personal friends, and in my experience, you shouldn't. If you treat subordinates well, and equally, it's easier to keep morale 'neutral'.
Is work a friendship gathering? No. It's a place to make money. You can create positive relations, and maintain a 'professional distance' from staff and customers, as you run the business.
.
Hey, that is a really good point and I think definitely something people should think about. If a boss is very close with one or 2 employees that might cause friction with other employees. I think it sounds like you’ve dealt with that very well.
@@JoeyCPA It's a real tough lesson to learn.
Because we all just naturally prefer people we get along with, but with employees, or children, you're destroying the others' motivation, and confidence, if you play favorites. If you single out one of your kids, it's hugely destructive for the same reason. The other kids just get destroyed.
@@Greg_Chase that’s so true. You wouldn’t like if it was happening to you so you don’t want to make others feel that way
@@JoeyCPA You fall into it easily with a star employee. You find out in the exit interview when a good, maybe not great, but promote-able employee leaves. You find out there is a general perception in the ranks that the boss(s) play favorites and are not bright enough to predict the impact on the other staff.
You find out that the exceptional employee have skills, and maybe people skills, that are not easy to mimic by the other subordinates, and the other subordinates are working hard but they don't feel 'visible' and leave for greener pastures.
I hate losing people who are contributing. This applies to customers to a degree also, depending on the type of business, but if customers network or know each other and you don't offer everyone the same deal, customer retention starts to suck.
The one case where you cannot easily get around 'playing favorites' is - the sales team. They have quotas. Star salespeople will get more attention. Sales staff not meeting quota, not a good scene.
