Today I tear apart a 3.5L VQ35HR from a 2007 Nissan 350z. This engine, unlike most of the engines on this channel, was from a VERY wrecked car and suffered massive damage as a result. I tear this down to discover what made it, what didn't and the extent of the damage.
My name is Eric and I own and run a full service auto salvage yard and part of our model is selling good parts off of bad engines. I get these bad engines from other salvage yards, or they are my customers old engine after they bought a new one from me. We salvage as many good parts from these engines as possible and the rest get scrapped in their appropriate material bins.

It's funny, but sometimes creative inaction is really the way forward. Can't wrap your head around a problem? Distract yourself doing something else and it's surprising how often the answer will come to you.

I actually flipped my 08 350z VQ35HR back in 2012. Now one of the cars I own is an 08 G35S HR at 216k miles its tuned and my wife enjoys driving it. Thank you GOD for letting me survive that crash.

It’s always running great before it blows up.
That engine has all the signs of good maintenance and a healthy amount of Italian tuneup. The windage from frequent high rpm keeps the oil deposits from building up, running a high quality synthetic oil doesn't sludge and varnish very easily, the intake ports have a nice healthy fuel washdown pattern, the back of the intake valves are clean, and the dry areas of the ports have minimal buildup. It would have been interesting to see how the rings looked as far as how clean or fouled the grooves and oil rings were, as hard driving tends to keep them relatively clean as well.

I used to work for an old body repair man who dealt with salvage rebuilds. I asked him one time how he handled dealing with the blood and other signs of human suffering, thinking I would get an answer about how he handled his emotions.
Instead he just replied: “Vinegar and a garden hose.”
@@brianjay692 well hes not wrong, i used to haul copart auction cars that all had biohazard tags allnover them.
Considering the damage to the bellhousing, I'd say that engine was halfway into the passenger compartment. If anyone survived, they must consider themself or selves very fortunate.

I always wondered what they meant by a 7/8 cam. Now I know!
And I love it when Eric removes the bolts from a destroyed part (like this head) in the proper order so as not to warp it.
Always do it the right way, even when you know it's pointless to do, because keeping that good habit and attention to detail carries through to the rest of your work. :)

I wonder why each head bolt sounds like it cracks twice when loosening with the breaker bar? One as it starts to move and then one more time like 1/2 a turn in?
I think the point to take here is if you don't change your oil, you get variable length rods and piston mcnuggets. If you do change your oil, you get them newfangled cracked cams and a nifty timing cover access port. That's why I don't use Amsoil. Instead I use Nozoil. Because no oil = no problems!

At first I was VERY disappointed that you did not upload a video last night. Watching the teardown on Saturday night has become part of my Saturday night routine. That said, I know that RL is way more important and this video was worth the wait.
It wasnt the vq37vhr teardown that i wanted to see but its damn near the same engine lol. I appreciate your channel and these vids that you do man, especially when you throw parts out of frame and here them tumble hahahaha. Keep these tear downs coming man im learning alot from you and them.

Interesting to see inside the variable cam mechanism and just how many degrees this thing can move! I didn't know it was so much.
Who would want that short block, many many people! Not much to get that engine making noise again.

The VQ engine family is legendary. Won awards for so many years straight. And is so buttery smooth. I had the variant below this one on my Altima. It was so much fun to drive. Plenty of power. Reliable engine.
One of the best engines in the game paired with one of the worst transmission unfortunately
@@KrymiaMusic couldn’t have said it better. Having had several altimas in my past I can say from experience I did not like the first version of the cvt. The revised version drove better but still wasn’t smooth. Now the non cvts where average at best. But I agree with you. Was never a fan of Nissan transmissions.
@@leosthrivwithautism the transmission problems started after the “reno merger” when the french came in. Before that, bullet proof and performance machines
@@KrymiaMusic heck didn’t know that much. Haha. But good to know. I guess it was why my older Nissans where way better than the newer ones I had. I had owned Nissans for over 8 years and just realized the quality progressively getting worse. But was never sure why. Guess this answers it. 👍🏼
Same story with our 2010 Altima SR. Engine ran great, CVT blew up at 125K, and it ate alternators and batteries about once a year.
You could reuse the tty bolts as the collision squished the bolts back to new length
I truly enjoy your videos. You do an excellent job describing everything that you do, and you have a wonderful sense of humor.
I have seen that type of damage from vehicles that were thrown around in a tornado.
The way the trans is damaged looks to me like the vehicle was traveling way faster than it could be blown around
@@yeahitskimmel I said I have seen it because I have personally seen it. Cars have been thrown miles by tornados. The last big tornado that hit my area had a wind speed of 210mph. The last tornado that hit my house had a wind speed of 301mph.
There isn't enough mud packed into this engine for it to have been in a tornado but the level of damage is similar.

I haven't watched every single one, but at least 30 of your teardowns and this is my favorite one, the Marauder being a close 2nd. Anybody can run an engine hot or dry of oil and mash the pedal until it breaks but this, this is a special kind of carnage.
Those loose pieces of the oil pan are actually ancillary pieces of the oil pan.
Best one in quite a while Eric. Always happy to watch an oil starvation or hydrolock, but crashes and car fires are not run of the mill. Lookig forward to the next unusual one...
Stopping the crank for harmonic change. I use a trick my uncle showed me, i know not the best method. But remove plug and go to tdc on c1. 1/2 rotation on crank, feed about 6-8" of some 1/4" rope thru plug hole, clothes line works great. Intake valve will close, then continue spinning crank. The rope will stop piston without metal to metal contact. Turn back for removal.
Helps for changing valve seals without pulling heads too.

As mangled as that engine was, it makes me wonder if the driver is still alive. That must've been a high speed impact
It'd be a miracle, when the trans broke it had three places to go either down into the ground, side ways into the frame rails, or up through the thin body panels and into the interior of the vehicle....
It takes quite a bit to kill someone in a frontal impact. Like, way more than this.
@@lovelessissimo No it doesn't----just the force from a high speed impact alone can break someone's neck and kill them instantly.
@@justsumguy2u maybe in cars from 30 years ago. Nowadays with crumple zones, air bags, head rests, stretching seatbelts, and the fact that its lateral movement that breaks vertebrae and severs the spinal cord, the odds of survival in a frontal collision are very high. Fatal injuries due to frontal collisions are typically incurred due to internal bleeding, which can happen, but it takes enough force to overcome the other safety systems. And that much force would annihilate the engine compartment.
Now, a side collision is another matter. It doesn't take much of that to kill someone.
@@lovelessissimo I gotta admit this all seems so ghoulish and macabre. Unfortunately for me, it's all too real. I saw 2 kids killed in a 350Z in 2008 right in my rearview mirror. - Driver (who had been drinking) was speeding and rounded an S curve in town, went wide, driver jerked the wheel, overcorrected, the car slewed right then left and sailed across the center median, just missing me and T-boning itself sideways into a brand new Tundra behind me. Estimated impact speed about 130mph (Tundra 50mph+350Z about 80mph). Tundra was crushed to the firewall, its occupants sustained only minor injuries. The passenger in the Z had no chance, DRT. Driver was DOA at the hospital. It was a terrible thing to see happen, and I'll never forget it as long as I live. Modern cars are tremendously well engineered, but physics is still physics.

Always love it when you say "that part looks pretty good" and then it crashes into the floor.
There are parts which are never reused (at least in the first world) because they are inexpensive wear parts which are very difficult to replace, hence not worth the labor to install a reused part.

Usually you are taking apart engines that are destroyed from the inside, this one was destroyed from the outside! I pray for the person in that car!!!

Never seen impact damage like this before, wow! Why is it, when you are ripping an engine for parts, the exhaust manifold bolts all come out? You are working on one you are keeping and the things snap off.

It would be interesting to find all of the parts for a given engine build, where absolutely every part came broken from another engine. Build one complete engine where literally everything is broken. Make it an art piece. Put a thick pane of glass on top and use it as a table.

ooo yay. Is le new video. Definitely far later than you'd normally post, but that's fine by me. Since a video of good content is still a video worth watching whenever i get the chance :D
This engine reminds me of an ambulance the yard I work for bought a few years back, it had a low output version of a duramax with a 4L80E behind it. It bumped into something and bent the torque converter. (yes you read that correctly) The torque converter neck being bent bound it over the input shaft of the transmission, 2 or 3 of the original 6 torque converter bolts were still holding on (heads popped off the other bolts) to the stamped drive plate (which was bent like potato chip) but still bolted to the crank. This drive plate being separate from the cast flywheel on a duramax, which in this case was in pieces. Were it not for what you just read the transmission likely would've been ejected, and all that was required to separate the engine from the trans was cutting the steel drive plate with the torch around the converter bolts through the convenient user installed access gap between the engine and trans.
Now this is a video for me. I've had 3 VQ35/VQ37. I'm in the process of buying an 06 G to match my first an original I use to own.
Now I’m curious too see what the car looked like
If you can keep an eye out for a Subaru EZ36. The largest flat-6 they made. It would be very interesting to see it apart.
One thing you ought to do before you deem the short block "good" is to put a dial indicator on the crankshaft output flange to ensure it isn't bent there. That flywheel imparted a ridiculous amount of force into the crank.
The fact that it still turns over relatively easily means its likely "ok" since its not binding up in the rear main, but still would be good to check. I'd also want to check for cracks as well in that area, but it might not be so easy to inspect without fully tearing it down. I suspect what broke the trans off was having the front of the motor impact whatever the car ran into which then turned it at an angle relative to the trans, which snapped the bellhousing. Amazing the short-block survived that.
Crank thrust bearings would be interesting to have a look at.

I think you have a lot more Nissan fans than you think would love to see a yq37hr vid to compare these two. Maybe one that wasn’t driven by your average 350z owner
Another great video. How about a Toyota RAV4 2azfe engine? It would appear they are reasonably bulletproof but I've read the newer versions are troublesome.

This was a fun teardown. I'm guessing that the driver of that car had a pretty bad time from looking at the destruction from an impact..... on the driver's side, at high speed. If that engine came from DIY Pete, it likely took a WHOLE lots more abuse from his yelling at it before sending it to you. Minnie might have blessed it though ;-) Looking forward to your next one.

Only a few minutes in and it already feels special to me... I'm watching this sitting in the garage next to my HR roadster. It revved to 7,500 multiple times this weekend again. 65K miles. I feel weird watching this.

It'll probably be next to impossible to get but a VC-T nissan engine would be very very interesting to see torn down.
Save the wiring someone might need the plug ends that aren't damaged.. like throtle body, coil and good side of varible timing. Car probably hit a pole as its very isolated spot of damage

A square block of wood wedged into the block has always been my goto when dealing with a stuck crankpulley bolt. Never fails!
Looks like the aftermath of the typical oil gallery gasket failure these engines and the early VQ37VHR engines were prone to having...

This is the first time I've seen the type of cam timing control used on the exhaust cams, and can't find a great diagram of the internals anywhere... any chance as a bonus video you could cut the sprocket and the cover in half to give a section view? I'm sure the big spring on the sprocket would require the use of the Safety Tote!

what worked on my 2014 Maxima was PB Blaster, jamming a 3/8 extension in the main pulley against the oil pan and using a long 1/2" breaker bar with pipe..
A lot of good parts to save, Coils, sensors, screws etc.
I have not ever tore down a modern engine, and I have never seen a water pump mounted inside the timing chain cover. It would be an expensive nightmare to change out the water pump on that engine, and a complete disaster just waiting to happen.
