The lesson manuals are redundant but RFM brings them to life..

Hey Zak! I didn't know there was a place we could just hear RFM! I'm always thinking I wish we could just hear him! This is awesome!

Well done, RFM! As a Hispanic member of the church, I used to have a sort of "pride" about being a descendant of the Lehites. It appeared that many patriarchs give Hispanic people the tribe of Manasah, myself included. Nowadays I see it as trying to rewrite our Native American past, and instead I am trying to return to my own native roots and appreciate my ancestors for who they really were.

Hey RFM! For 40+ years I’ve loathed Mormon Sunday school but attending to try to learn from you - however the white shirt is giving me PTSD - 😢

I appreciate these lessons so much. I know nothing of what is taught in the Sunday school or about the book of Mormon, so this series is teaching me a lot.

Adhering to the Law of Moses would go beyond temple ordinances - it would mean Saturday sabbath, keeping kosher, circumcision on day 8, monthly ritual baths for women... the Lehites would’ve been living like that for generations. Don’t see any of that in the BofM. Even though they magically became Christians before they arrived, ridiculous to think they’d assume they could mix milk and meat or make Sunday their sabbath.

I love RFM I need to start the Shakespeare series. I’m recovering from Mormonism and now I need to face 10th grade English class trauma. I can’t think of a better way to do it with than the guidance of this man. 😂

Great scholarship & insights, RFM. Would’ve glommed on to them back in the day, too late now for moi. These days I much prefer your Shakespeare insights - and wisdom gleaned from my own reading of literature/poetry/philosophy - for navigating the human condition w grace : )

RFM, Nephi refers to himself in the third person before switching to the first person on the very first page of 1 Nephi, in the overture:
"Nephi's brethren rebel against him. He confoundeth them, and buildeth a ship....This is according to the account of Nephi; or in other words, I, Nephi, wrote this record."

The fact that this is even here at all is weird to me for the following reasons:
      1) this would be in the small plates of Nephi, which were unabridged.
      2) since this contains a first-person affirmation from Nephi, we can conclude that this was engraved on the plates, and then translated by Joseph.
      3) this would be the second go-through of this story, the first of which appearing in the 116 pages.
      4) it seems reasonable that the book was translated in sequential order, and if that's true, then how did Nephi know what to write in his overview? If this was written afterwards, how? We don't leave room at the top of the page when we write, so it's not like he can just go back and include this, Unless we are to assume he made a brand new - otherwise blank - page and just unhooked his 3 ring binder of plates to clip it in there.
      5) did Nephi and/or Lehi ever think it was weird that they were both spending countless hours engraving these HEAVY plates, and lugging them through the desert, only to tell essentially the same story?? I wonder if that was ever a source of contention in the family. Maybe that's why Laman and Lemuel were always so mad at him; they were always off hunting while he was in his little tent engraving.

    Excellent presentation!
I have a question: it appears that Joseph Smith believed in *charismatic* priesthood rather than a lineal priesthood, as evidenced by Alma the elder baptizing HIMSELF at the waters of Mormon.
    What do you think?

  • @baref1959
    @baref1959 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

the thought that always bounces into my mind when i hear discussions like this. what is bound on earth is bound in heaven. men that recieve the priesthood on earth keep that priesthood until god rescinds it. meaning that the covenant can not be taken away by man, only god. no church can take away what was sealed in heaven.

The priesthood ban against Black men was just as silly as the current one against all women.

BoM says they followed the “Law of Moses” not the “Law of Lehi”. The FAIR apologetic argument is weak sauce.

The Priesthood of Aaron is called "The Aaronic Priesthood." The Priesthood of Levi is called "The Levitical Priesthood." The Priesthood of Melchizedek is called "The Melchizedek Priesthood"...? Wait. That can't be right. "Melchizedek" is a noun like "Aaron" and "Levi." "Aaronic" and "Levitical" are ADJECTIVES that describe the TYPE of priesthood in question. The Priesthood of Melchizedek SHOULD be called "The Melchizedekal Priesthood" or "The Melchizedekian Priesthood." Someone made a mistake....
The Melchizedek Priesthood, we are taught in Sunday School, is the HIGHEST priesthood -- that is, the priesthood that Jesus himself used (and uses). Why is the Melchizedek Priesthood not called "The Christian Priesthood" or "The Messianic Priesthood"...?
    Mormonism is DEEPLY flawed.

Being a convert to the church and one who has studied theology and Mormon Doctrine for more than 60 years, I am well aware that Joseph and others made exceptions that were inspired (as Christ did ehen he blessed the Canaanite woman as Matthew records) even as kate as the 20th century. But Joseph himself stated that the curse on the sons of Canaan would not be removed except if it were acted upon by as great a power as caused it to come (revelation in 1978)!

The priesthood ban is true doctrine as so many prophets snd apostles have mentioned from Joseph Smith onward and it is confirmed in the books of Abraham and Moses so dont be stupid! READ THEM AND LEARN!!!

Agree or disagree with the content, but come on, this podcast is not a dumb podcast. This lesson is much more well researched and insightful than anything I ever used to hear in Sunday school.
