freEvo8 I love my WRX. got the limited trim for less than I could’ve gotten the base trim STI and honestly, it is a cornering monster. I got the car for fun weekended to the beach with my family or fun road trips. It’s not a ferrari, but I just couldn’t see paying more for a car that would never see the track.
Lock the center diff. and you got 4HI. Also aluminum control arms, brake vectoring, shift light, HYDRAULIC power streering and quick steering rack are some of the missed items.
Roy Clendaniel basically you get a pretty quick race/rally car from the factory with HUGE potential in the aftermarket. If parents offered these kids the choice between one or the other NONE of them would choose the wrx.
It’s actually not pink, it’s cherry blossom. Which in itself a very traditional and Subaru STI purist color. That color was used on the original STI badges then it received an update getting a little darker around 04. Then in 2008 Subaru changed it to red because our market found their masculine color too feminine.
Front and rear LSD's, bulletproof transmission, amazing brakes, adjustable real center dif. Its much more of a sports car. And coming from 4 previous WRX's before my 19 STi, I can honestly say the STi is worth the extra money. And in my case the difference between my STi base and a WRX limited was only about 4k. Get whatever you can afford, but I've never heard an STi owner say they wish they had bought a WRX, where plenty of Rex owners wish they had the STi! And as far as the "Big Wang" goes, I hated it at first, but its what makes this car unique and has grown on me. As always great video man!
Big wang” please elaborate, I have a once in a life time to get the car of my dreams- why did the sti not have a clutch in this video or did I miss that part- I live in San Francisco and people tell me that manuals will forfeit after a long term use- I honestly don’t care but automatic will save you a headache, like I said I’m willing to go manual and learn how to go up those steep hills then to have a WRX that the turbo takes a few more sec’s to kick in and I’d have to mod in order to get that STI feel. Ty
I'd like to address this really quick because I see this comment on a lot of videos. Most of the time, when someone goes to buy a car they don't have AN EXTRA 10k AFTER they purchase a new car. They finance the extra 10k, it's not like they have it in the bank. So if they do get the WRX, it's most likely going to stay a WRX for a few months lol. On top of that each 1k in financing is around $15 dollars a month. So I'm guessing unless you're going through a car broker when you go to a stealersip an extra $150 a month for the STI isn't a bad decision. IMHO, I see a lot of over extending from owners when it comes to STI. The insurance is more. Maintenance is more (unless you maintenance it yourself). Tires are more. If you aren't going to track the car or hit the canyons... Why even get this car? 50k is a huge chunk of change. Yes you get tons of value for your buck, but do you need any of this? Buy a year old STI, save yourself 12-16k and hope for the best. It was a decent video to watch. But I only saw two things I cared about in a car like this. 1: LSD. 2: Brake package Anyone notice for another 50k car, we're still using Toyota Camry door handles? Lol
I think of it this way, if you want better acceleration, speed, handling, steering, brakes, AWD drive system, , DCCD, SI drive, interior, wing, exhaust sound (boxer rumble), transmission, gearbox, aftermarket support, lights, wheels, then get an STI. If you want better gas mileage then get a WRX.
I had a 15 wrx great car ,I traded it in for a 16 STi no looking back .You can make a wrx just as fast or faster than an STi but it will never be an STi...Love that STi rumble ...
Hey, I'm kinda old but a newbie to the Subaru WRX family. Please don't hate on me because I've read enough that I know there will be some. I recently purchased at 2016 WRX Limited CVT. I then promptly took it to a great shop here in KC called Modified by KC and had it modded to Stage 2. What a fun freaking car. I've never had a fast, sporty, performance car, ever. A car has always been a tool to get me to point A to B. Now, I get in "Tokyo" and it's fun every time!
I had a 2016 WRX Premium, and now a WRX STI Type RA. Bottom line: both cars are huge fun and will leave a BIG smile on your face. To me, the difference between WRX and WRX STI is very clear and has nothing (directly) to do with money. If you're going to do anything on track, then the logical choice is the WRX STI. Although, it has to be said, the regular WRX would still be fun on track (particularly if you consider yourself a track-day novice). Where the WRX equals (and according to some reviewers even beats) the WRX STI, is in everyday, regular roads, daily commute driving. If you have no intention of taking your car on track, you can save a ton of money by opting for the regular WRX and you will still have a VERY fast car where, driven properly (and safely, and within the posted speed limits) you will run out of courage before you run out of grip. One final thought about stock Vs mods. Personally, as I prefer corners to straights, I wouldn't do any serious under-the-skin mods on any car unless I was absolutely convinced that I could drive my stock car as fast on track as an instructor could ... and that's never happened! Now, cosmetic mods, that's something else - some amazing cosmetic treatments out there!
I owned my 18 WRX for three months, I traded up for a Limited STI, my trade in was 3,000 bucks upside down, so they do hold their value. I like the STI better, I don’t race it, I just drive it normal. But I do like that I can kick the rear out a little on a wet turn by biasing power to the rear wheels via the Si Drive.
Honestly, I guess on paper, the performance on both vehicles are very similar which causes some of these debates. All it took for me was a test drive and I was immediately in love with the STI. The WRX is a great car, there is no doubt about it. But when I test drove it, the steering feel is isolated and very loose, thank to its electronic steering. As for the STi, it uses hydraulic steering rack which allows the drivers to feel more connected. Bear in mind, i didn't know of the steering rack differences yet I was still able to tell the difference. This shows how different both cars handle. I was smiling when I test drove the WRX, however, I was giggling like a fat kid with candy when I test drove the STi. The handling is truly amazing. I love it. The pure happiness from driving the STi, was well worths that extra $10,000 dollars in my opinion.
if you want stock, warranty covered 300 hp , interior exterior upgrades go with the STI. if you don't care, want more bang for your bucks, no warranty and rather customize on your own get the WRX. There is no need to down talk for people who got the STI or WRX. I honestly wanted the rumble and didn't care if it cost 10k more.
I have a 2017 wrx limited and it has all the power and fun I need. I think most people (not all) would be plenty happy with wrx over sti. Let's be honest, the wing attracts alot of people just put one on a wrx and save the money. Joe I really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work sir!
Both cars are for two different people. You can't generalize one car over the other as the best choice for the masses. However...what I see out there is WRX owners dumping the extra money on just the motor and leaving the brakes and suspension stock, while STI owners are dropping them on bags and playing with launch control without launching. But...to each his own. That's the beauty of it.
It seems like alot of the people commenting WRX>STI are folks that haven't driven both. The STI is cleary superior to the WRX stock for stock. You can always entertain how the cars will fair after modification but at the end of the day, the STI is 10k more for a reason. P.S. I really enjoyed the comparison Mr. Raiti. Comprehensive and to the point. I haven't enjoyed an informational car video in this capacity in quite some time.
I deliberated this for a while, wrx vs STI and I am still glad I got the wrx. I do not like the EJ engine at all - horrible fuel economy, big turbo lag, unreliable due to thin cylinder walls and full floating cylinders and timing belt (vs chain). STI's make no sense to me because I can get a V-8 car with 100 more hp and torque and MUCH better fuel economy than the STI.
If all you care about is horsepower than the STI isn't for you to begin with. LSD, brakes, wheels, tires, tranny... it's obviously intended to be throw around the corners not drag racing.
I bought 15 sti and traded it in for the 17wrx. No regrets at ALL! Wrx is already modded and behaves way better than the sti did. Both cars are good so you can't go wrong with either or. If you like modding I would definitely recommend the wrx.
Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience! I am so glad that you are enjoying your WRX! You are right thou, you can't go wrong with either one.
Another great Vid! Love the Subie enthusiasm, camera work and the way you approach the cars specifics like a Weatherman tracking a storm!:) I traded in a loved 14 WRX for my 19 STi. A big part of the attraction for me was not only the obvious (warrantied) performance advantages. Being a Japanese car enthusiast for many years, the STi heritage played a tremendous part in my 'upgrade'. Higher payment, more $$ for insurance, zero regrets! Keep up the good work!
People forget the brembos, recaro seats, steering rack, better drivetrain, suspension, and a entire list of parts that are just better. Both cars are good and have their merits. In the end I wouldn't get any of these new ones if your in the market, I'd wait till 2020. Rumor has it Subaru isn't giving the STI the new FA engine but rather improving on the old EJ 257 motor with stronger internals and bigger turbo. The new S209 is basically Subaru testing the new upgrades on the old EJ motor which I'm excited about.
Me too! Everybody complains about the EJ257, but ive had no problems... I keep it stock use 93 octane and keep my oil changed and topped up. I would love to buy a Subaru with an engine done up from the factory. Ive had issues with "performance shops" in the past on previous cars and now prefer to just buy a car done up already.
The steering responsive headlights have very good coverage, except for the area right in front of the car. I've added the Prolightz LED fog light set which fills that gap.
I was such a huge fan of Subaru when they were in the WRC! They pulled out at the end of 2008 which is a shame because the hatchback STi only had one year of development. i miss those days!
15 STI owner and Subaru enthusiast, Got her Used @2yrs old and began modding the next day. Currently Full bolts ons ,exhaust brakes/tires and some suspension. Ive played with some Wrx's and the STI is much more dialed in. Stock from a dig the WRX is a split second quicker because of FA direct port, and twin scroll. The tiny turbo tends to run out of puff. And I don't think the 2L does very well with the weight of the VA platform. That said the community needs people to buy the boring ones :P. There's no secrets to the STI everything's tried-and-true simply Follow the yellow brick road to power and performance. Without a doubt the Subarus have the most aftermarket support of any 4-cylinder platform currently in production. An STI with a quick tune , a downpipe and mybe a swaybar will hold it's own . As far the WRX ,Clearly there are those who rather be Scene then live on The Cutting Edge of performance. And it's fine by me and of Subaru of America.
I have the 2018 WRX with Sport-Tech package (here in Canada) and I feel like its the best WRX you can get out of all the other models. It doesn't have the square light on the bumper and it comes stock with OEM 18" wheels that look really nice.
That makes no sense. You can keep your pink STI badges, your cup holder cover, your big Wang, your fog light delete “option”, your power control switches, your slightly bigger wheels, your older than dirt 310hp engine with its.3 tenths of a second faster 0-60 time....and I’ll pocket my $10,000.00 dollars thank you very much. The price difference between these two cars is the total amount that I paid for my 2013 Focus ST3. YES, you heard me correctly. I purchased the car used in 2015 with 22,600 miles on her. Only two years old. Car was and is still mint condition. I am meticulous about my cars (all three of them) including my almost 33 year old Mustang GT which I purchased new in 1986! I did trade in a beautiful 2006 Acura TL 6 speed manual murdered out in all black with 158K on her. I purchased that brand new in 2006. I loved that car but it was time for a clutch, front struts, rear shocks.....blah, blah, blah...I didn’t want another project car so I traded her in on the ST3. FIRST used car I ever purchased! I got four new 18” Continental tires and a one year bump to bump warranty. Now my ST has 71K trouble free miles on her and my “gamble” looks like it’s paying off big time. For me this is a no brainer: WRX Hands Down winner. 10K more for an STI... Get the *** outta here with that noise. 🤑💰👀😳
Raiti's Rides ; What up Joe. She handles like absolute 💩 doo doo like every high performance car with high performance tires. No they are not summer Pirelli P Zero tires now. The Conti-Sport tires are long gone...but even with all season tires FWD is terrible in the snow. I don’t understand why everyone thinks it’s great in the snow. I guess if you put a full set of Blizzaks on anything it will go thru the snow.
I bought my wrx in 2012. Back then it was actually slightly quicker to 60 and just as fast as the sti. Both even made very similar hp at the wheels. But the wrx has more compression and taller gearing for better fuel economy. Plus much more compliant suspension. I don’t race or drive at excessive speeds. I’ve also owned a 2006 sti before. The gas mileage, insurance, and less financing charges greatly favor the wrx. The sti is cool, but gets old after a while. I started to resent the high price for things I didn’t need. So, unless Subaru greatly differentiates the sti, like they use to (80+hp, better looks), I don’t see the value. Maybe a 400hp sti and 300hp wrx (many argue that the GR ej255 vf52 wrx has 300hp stock and is underrated at 265hp) would swing me toward the $10k option.
I tried to go drive one. The salesperson was like "oh, you just bought a WRX a few weeks ago? I guess you aren't actually in the market to buy anything, so I'll pretend I'm busy and hope you go away."
I had an 18 wrx. Found myself modding it performance wise just to be unsatisfied. I had to tell myself “it has a good sound to it” even though it really didn’t sound different from a Honda. Traded it in for an sti and haven’t looked back. I’ve always wanted an sti and I felt like I shorted myself when I bought the wrx.
I had two 2005 STIs. The main reason for an STI over a WRX for me was the larger, heavier torque rated 6 speed manual, DCCD, larger LSDs front and rear, better axles, better hub bearings, better suspension, bigger brakes, stiffer body, and the slightly better engine/turbo/intercooler at the time. In an STI, you can side step the clutch at a drag strip or on the road to launch the car without much worry. The split case transmission in the WRX generally doesn't last very long with launching. At the end of the day, the WRX is a better daily driver for the money, even more so with the new 2.0L DI motor. I'm considering buying a 2019 STI all the same. :D
WRX>STI...why?? 1) 0-100 km/hr almost same time. 2) CVT option available 3) Full fuel tank WRX range- 550-600 kms, STI Range-450-500 kms, 4) Newer engine very efficient Turbo kicks in at lower RPS than STI 5) Cheaper on insurance 6) Exterior/interior is same except for STI badge lol 7) Fastest speed limit is 100 km/hr so WRX is more than enough for Canadian roads 8) We all know 10k Price difference....there are many more reasons.
Id take it you've never felt the shitty top end of a wrx compared to an sti or the triple lsd setup paired with si drive The hydrologic steering as opposed to electrical which in the case of the wrx is nothing compared to the sti. Bmw claims they can make electronic steering as good, not subaru. The direct shifter link to the transmission, no flimsy cable. Plenty of other reason including the all glorious ej rumble which the wrx sadly will never have again. I think you don't get the sti in that regard. If youre looking for fuel range, low end power, and a cvt gearbox, the stis not that car for you. The sti is a better drivers car in every regard. Youre looking for a highway beater.
@@XxUltimateGodzXx and he said 100 is max in canada. Lol I think he only drives to the nearest walmart. And youre absolutely right. 3ple lsd is insane. +, dccd.
I had a 2010 hatch sti and I loved it. However I now have a 2018 wrx and love it more. It is much better at being a daily driver due to the torque and power coming in at a much lower rpm... the suspension is still confidence inspiring without feeling every bump... The fuel economy is amazing and I can do a cross country trip with it without making extra mathematic calculations against my next paycheck lol
Both great cars and both are a lot of fun to drive. Perfect comparison analysis Joe. No question that although they're very similar - the driving experience with each is very different. I enjoy them both but I really appreciate everything that feels ramped up about the STI.
You know what I realized? I always end up on your channel for anything Car related. (especially Subaru) Thanks for being a strong go to channel for all of my “what do I wanna know” moments.
Thank you for sharing the differences! As is usually the case, you never really see anybody with the STI say they should've gotten the wrx. That said though, the WRX is great! But if you mod a wrx you need to start looking at all the supporting mods to boot to handle that power. As is the case with all cars, just choose your poison!
Someone needs to test the 2019 sti piston materials and it's impact value and do the same with a 2018 or 2017 sti pistons and compare the two values and material to see if the 2019 sti pistons really are "stronger" as Subaru claims... which baffles me because the main issue with the sti internals are the rings, not the pistons, the pistons fail as a result of the rings failing, they should have addressed the rings too not just the pistons lol. Good job Subaru 👍 way to address only half the problem lol.
Do some research. Before I got my STi, i did look into that as well. The rings on the 2019+ STI is thicker, to my knowledge its the same exact piston as the STI type RA as well. Just so you didn't want to here is a link that might benefit you www.comeanddriveit.com/engine/type-ra-vs-sti-internals for your future references.
Bought the wrx with the intention of using it strictly as a daily, used the money I saved from not buying an STI to get my project which is a 91’ 240sx :)
i'm buying a 2019 Subaru STI tomorrow.I feel that Subaru is getting ready to dumb this car down in the future.I tried to get the dealer to throw in the performance exhaust and he told me that it is no longer available for the sti!Whats next?In 2020,goodbye EG engine,no more rumble, what else?the price was right ,i'm signing on the dotted line tomorrow.Love Rairi's Rides.Keep up the Subaru reviews !
The reason it's no longer an available option is that it is the standard exhaust on the 2019 STi, the '18 and '19 look the same, but the '19 now gets the RA drivetrain, which is 5 extra hp to 310, higher flowing intake, performance exhaust, stronger pistons and a more aggressive 3rd gear ratio (which lets you utilize more low end torque) ...... unfortunately it doesn't get the suspension upgrades the RA has though.
@@RaitisRides They are moving the 2020 WRX/STi to the new global platform and I predict we are going to see the new FA24 that is in the Accent in the new Sti, so we will have the FA20 in the WRX and FA24 in the STi ...... that's my guess anyways. And supposedly this is supposed to be the last non-hybrid STi we will see as they are looking at a Hybrid performance model for 2025
Because of watching these reviews I made decision to wait for refresh update. I will say if it sucks ill probably go with a used 19 sti with low miles and that being said I just went through negotiations for a 19 limited reg wrx the sales guy looked at me like I was crazy when I said I wanted 10 percent off msrp but then the sales manager came back at 9 percent off and honestly after the test drive of the car I decided I wasn’t wowed and doesn’t mean at all it’s not worth it but I can wait. Subaru WRX’s are cars about the drive experience and I just decided I wanted all the experience lol I left the dealership and they called me willing to go to numbers I wanted still turned it down to wait but lesson is don’t be afraid to say what you want no matter how they act. Also as long as your reasonable with it. The struggle is real to wait for 2020
I am keeping my fingers crossed that Subaru will deliver with the 2020 WRX/STi. I think worse case scenario if you what you might still find 2019s on dealer lots and get the deal of a lifetime. Wish I could find my crystal ball! lol
You are awesome man. Your videos helped me on my decision. Bought my 2019 STI three weeks ago. Been wanting one since I was in high school. I’m 29 and I said screw this I’m pulling the trigger!
BIGHITMAYFIELD awesome man. Got mine in the world rally blue. That color always stood out to me while in high school! Already installed the muffler delete to let out that Rumble!
Yes wright down to the inverted shock absorbers. 3 limited slip differentials two that are much bigger. With the brakes the rear rotor diameter is similar to the old Sti front rotor and the new fronts are 13.4" . $10k extra at a blink of an eye seems a lot But maybe there`s more than meets the eye! Great work.
Steve W He shows the full lock in the video on the center diff. Finger controlled or computer but you can only fully lock it safely on a loose surface. Anyways why not just keep it rear wheel biased. Electronics who would have guessed
Thanks for pointing that out. I had to go over to Engineering Explained's channel and see it in a bit more detail. Learned something new about my ride!
Both those Subarus look great .One of few good cars left that are still made in my opinion. I think that oldschool engine is good you dont find them today.
Raiti, I gotta say, I love the energy you put in your videos. It easy to tell you’re very passionate about the content you put out. Keep it up, bud. Oh yeah, and shout out to your cameraman.😎
I really appreciate you taking the time to say that! Tom is one of the best and I appreciate you throwing some love your way! Thank you for being on this journey with me!
Sti all the way i drove both cars Wrx and Sti. the Sti is such a better track car, now for a daily driver wrx is the way to go , i bought the 2019 STI its a blast to drive i like the fact that i can control the diff. I go full open DIFF manual AND SPORT sharp its a different animal then the wrx.
Also the reason why the wrx has pink was because in japan subaru used to honor the Japanese Cheery Blossom and Sti on the early models were pink to resemble that!
The biggest difference is the transmission. The sti gearbox can take the abuse if you upgrade it to 500hp whereas the wrx cannot. Wait for new sti 2020 model, buy one year after launch.
@@RaitisRides I have put 13,000 miles on it within a year. One road trip and the rest for daily driving. The road trip was comfortable and the STI is also a great car for daily driving. I ride in sport mode most the time. My wife drives it in Intelligent mode and when I want to push it and really play into it I put it into Sport # mode. I have the ability to put 3 child's seats in the back if I want or comfortably ride with 5 people in my car. Great back legroom. I have a wing delete on it so I have the low profile wing on it. It is a nice sleek look. I may change the exhaust to invidia Gemini and also add a Cobb Accessport and blow off valve that vents externally. I however am waiting for my 40,000 mile Bumper to Bumper warranty to wear off before mods. This car Stock is fun as hell and its giving me time to learn the car beforei start adding horsepower and launch control and all those goodies. I will keep this car for as long as I can. Boxer engines are notoriously reliable. I also cant wait to take on this winter with new tires.
Now if only they made EJ257s closed deck from the factory, with thermostats that open up 10° sooner, and pistons that were not hypereutectic, then we have a winner!
This. A thousand times this. If nothing else, they could give us a nice final edition before sending the EJ off into the sunset, with a closed deck, forged pistons, a 20G, and a tune that is more aggressive than the Subaru of America norm?
Ill take a WRX any day (currently drive a 2016 manual WRX. My bestie drives a 2016 STI). I really don't get the hype of an STI when the WRX is just a better car overall. WRX is lighter , rides smoother form the softer suspension, and just built more for the street then the STI . Not sure why anyone would drive an STI as a daily on the streets bc it rides like its got scaffolding for suspension. WRX is better on gas. 14 year old motor vs a 3 year old motor that produce close to the same 0-60's. WRX loves e85, STI not so much unless you spend around $2,000+ for the fuel setup vs a simple tune with the AP on a WRX. WRX is easier to mod and makes more power then the STI when fully bolt on. As many vids have covered a "what is better" I will agree that for a street/daily driver, go wrx. If you track or go off-road then go STI. I really do like the transmission of the STI, definitely feels more put together then the WRX. Save the 10k and pump all that cash into bolt-ons for a WRX and you will have a much faster, more fun to drive car. This is just my opinion as I own a WRX and often drive my buddies STI. We have been to Mexico a few times. I run the MAPerformance stage 1 E85 tune, STI runs the Cobb Stage 1 OTS. At a 30 roll, the STI in sport# gets a jump for a few seconds then its dead even. At a 40 roll, WRX gets a jump for a few seconds then its dead even again. From a Dig its whoever gets off the clutch the fastest.
Thank you so much Chad for your great input and feedback! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and input! That was some great information!
I love the wrx, its a pretty decent car, but if you have the extra 10k, then why not the sti. Great video Joe........big up to Tom as well for his awesome camera work.
I’ve owned both, just get the wrx, grab a Cobb access port, get the map from MAPerformace and that should be all you need. Way less expensive outright, cheaper on insurance, way better gas mileage, and best of all it’s faster with the stock parts so you keep that sweet sweet warranty. Profit $$$ as they also keep their value better as well so you’re g2g on your next car.
The personality is gone from the newer WRX's with 2.0. No burble means just another 4 banger with a snail bolted to it. Sucks because both myself and my son love the new design of the WRX but when driving this newer version there is clearly something missing, mainly that burble coming out the back. I know the EJ25 and its unequal length headers was not efficient but it did give it the personality we immediately recognize when one rolls through the neighborhood. I have never turned my head when a newer WRX goes by because it sounds like nothing special. Maybe there is an aftermarket exhaust etc. that can somewhat mimic the older EJ but I doubt it. Maybe the 2020 STI will get it right. Worth waiting for at this point.
For me, the WRX, especially in limited trim, is the more responsible purchase between the two, especially as a daily driver. But man, the STI really tempts you.
I have an 18 Sti. The store I bought it from sponsors a track day at the local track (Milwaukee Mile). After a year of dealing with kids who put pinstriping on their wheels and tell me that they spent 2k to get the same car I have, I met a non douche. At the track, he said his car (18 WRX) had huge steering problems and he was going to put in a rear sway bar.
Here's my opinion based on my last 3 cars (07 STI stage 1, 11 STI Stage 2, and 14 GTR FBO/e85): Unless I'm tracking these cars, I'd find it hard to justify the extra $10K. I'm currently in the market for a WRX for that reason and because I've driven my friends WRX. Now here's the kicker... I know that once I'm ready to pull the trigger, I'll be tempted to buy the STI AGAIN! I'm in CA now, but when I lived in CO, the ability to lock the differential made the car more predictable while driving in the snow or ice. I was also waiting for Subaru to update the aging STI engine, but all they did was give it a slight make over. I hear the ringland failure in #3 still is present.
I love 💘 SUBARU WRX STI..it Can Handel Rough Road..Cross Stream..it Can Even JUMP it's a Rally Car.Breed ..305HP Not Bad at all..I Just Love it../ Watching From The Philippines ..
The biggest kick in the dick about the newer WRX's is that they dropped the 2.5l from the previous generation. The '08-'14 WRX's felt so much more snappier, especially when you opened up the intake and exhaust. Sure, the 5 speed was made of glass, but it was a damn fun car.
"....are they rowing a boat?...." regarding the shifter.....had me literally laugh out loud. You know, watching this doesn't help me with deciding on if I want a 2019 STI or keep my 2013 WRX :(
Hey Jimmy! I am glad that you picked up on my jokes! I can totally understand where you are coming from. Don't ever drive an STI or it's over for your WRX! Thanks for watching!
I had a 2015 WRX and in OCT 17 I upgraded it to a 2018 STI. My only regrets are not having tested the STI in 2015. The great experience does not necessarily imply a great difference in numbers. I thought that I was extremely smart when I traded my GTI in for the WRX. I thought: "it has way better gas mileage, a more modern engine, it's more affordable, etc." Plus, compared to the GTI when you start it, it sounds like a true machine. Then... you go to a Boxerfest and you feel that your car sounds like a Camry. I thought of buying and another WRX, an old one just for the rumble, but then I thought well... It looks like Subaru is abandoning the competitive advantage they have with the rumbling sound and the linearity of the EJ engine and before it's too late, I wanted my rumbling engine instead of waiting for another twin scroll one. In the 2019 STI you get several of the important mods that the Type RA introduced, the interior looks way better, the six-piston Brembos are a delight and how can you be sure that the next gen is not going to have issues, that is going to be as fun as the current STI is, plus all that for less than $ 35,000 or so? Currently, the STI is a great deal if you enjoy driving your car and not just being silently transported or so to say when passion speaks louder than the numbers / invasive electronic & plastic feeling. In several years it might be the norm that the cars are going to be more and more electric. More torque, more fuel efficient, but you are going to miss these STIs like hell. It happened to the 911s where the new ones might have great numbers, but if you could buy any, maybe you'll stick to a one from the '90s. Imagine that you could still buy an air-cooled new 911. Even Subaru is discarding the rumble as a minor thing. My wife asked me the other days: which would be an upgrade to my STI and I said a manual Porsche 911. To me, not the numb Type-R, not the RS which nor even Ford thought it was worth keeping and probably not even the next-gen STI if it sounds like the Japanese current version.
@@RaitisRides haha I just test drove an Sti and damn is the ride completely different. Plus 1st gear goes by so damn quick. I'm looking at trading my wrx for an Sti.
Just your friendly mechanic here sooooooooooo the “upgrades” are cool but when they need replacing it’ll be more expensive the difference between 19” and 18” wheels are the tires for the same tire just 1 inch in difference could cost you anywhere between 100$ to 300$ the fancy rotors are not cheap and I’m assuming most of you don’t know how to replace them that’ll run yah about 6-800$ to replace the “fully functional wing” only gives that good good at like highway speeds buiuuttttttt oh god if my car doesn’t say sti I’m not buying it and oh god if the headlights don’t move 😬😬😬😭😭😭
I'm thinking if you're buying a performance car you SHOULD already know this, same as buying the performance upgrades on Mustangs and Camaros and the NISMO versions of 370z and GTR ..... more performance is fun, but more expensive to replace and maintain
One big thing everyone forgets to mention when talking about spending 2,5,10k on upgrades in a wrx that they will void they're warranty...I like to get 100k warranty I wouldn't ruin that for mods...Especially when those mods no matter what take away from the life of the motor
I did? I thought I covered it? That is one of the biggest assets of the STi over the WRX. Especially if you are going to be doing any kind of driving in the snow, gravel, etc...
He covered it when showing off the DCCD. He didn't talk about the front and rear differentials though. The STi has a front helical differential and a rear torsen differential while the WRX has not had any limited slip capability front or rear since 2008.
Thank you so much for watching and sharing that extra input! This was a tough one to remember everything in the side by side! I always appreciate a little assist!
You buy the wrx because it's cheaper or because you can't afford the sti, same reason people buy smaller engine camaros, mustangs, challengers. They know not everyone can afford the "ideal" drivetrain so they make a cheaper option. people buy what they can afford (hopefully)
I wish the fake vents were replaced by STI branded fog light covers like the old Blob eye generation. I had a chance to buy an STI or a WRX and I went WRX because it was going to to be my commuter daily. No track days planned.
Get yourself a 1998-2001 2.5 rs coupe and swap an sti engine in there. It’s both lighter and better looking than the 2018 sti. Sincerely, 22b body kit RSTI owner
My coworker drives a 2011 subie STI and she loves it... and I'm starting to fall in love with the STI... and her as well... lol
Hey nothing like being with a car girl! Go for it man!
Never shit where you eat
So did you ask her out yet?
k bone it’s been 6 months, did you shoot your shot?
k bone if the car is stick- I might wife her.
If you have the money for an sti get the sti if you have the money for a wrx get a wrx, its not that deep, they're both great cars
So very true!
freEvo8 thank you so much for sharing such a great reply. It was great to hear about your experience and you gave great details!
I agree they're both great cars.
Omar Almanza great minds think a like!
freEvo8 I love my WRX. got the limited trim for less than I could’ve gotten the base trim STI and honestly, it is a cornering monster. I got the car for fun weekended to the beach with my family or fun road trips. It’s not a ferrari, but I just couldn’t see paying more for a car that would never see the track.
You get three limited slip differentials and a bulletproof transmission. STI has more traction than 99% of pickup trucks.
Very good point! Thank you for sharing the extra info and your input!
Lock the center diff. and you got 4HI. Also aluminum control arms, brake vectoring, shift light, HYDRAULIC power streering and quick steering rack are some of the missed items.
and a 20 year old engine
Methamphetameme yeah people will be mad they want that 3jz goomba
Roy Clendaniel basically you get a pretty quick race/rally car from the factory with HUGE potential in the aftermarket. If parents offered these kids the choice between one or the other NONE of them would choose the wrx.
You wanna know what's faster ?? The wrx when you pay it off ..
That is a good point!
The wrx's depreciation.
Agreed my co worker owes money on his sti while I paid cash for mine bahahahahahaha
NS Sherlock wrx has excellent residual value. Top 10 on kbb list.
I paid 34k cash out the door for my 2017 STI.....but ya if your making monthly payments it's easier to pay off a WRX.
It's not even a choice. I'll just go for the maximum package of sti...
i don't have money for both anyway but it's free to dream about the best one.
It’s actually not pink, it’s cherry blossom. Which in itself a very traditional and Subaru STI purist color. That color was used on the original STI badges then it received an update getting a little darker around 04. Then in 2008 Subaru changed it to red because our market found their masculine color too feminine.
You are 100% correct! That you for sharing that info! I always liked the cherry blossom color! I really like tradition!
Looks PINK
Ultra AL it does doesn’t it.
Thank you sir for your detailed historic recollection, I could not have expressed my self better.
Phil Lenan thank you for your input.
i just bought my first STI 2019 and i love it
Congrats! What color did you get?
would you be willing to trade it for a kidney, i have a spare.
Thanks Ryan for the compliment and for your great input! Thanks for watching!
Ty
Personally, I'd rather get the wrx and spend 10k in mods to make the car my own. But that's just me.
P.s. I have a 2015 wrx
- Darrin
TheAsianHybrid I think that would totally work to your advantage! How many miles do you have on your WRX?
@@RaitisRides 62k give or take
Any issues?
1: LSD.
2: Brake package
Anyone notice for another 50k car, we're still using Toyota Camry door handles? Lol
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate that!
I love that perspective! ;-)
Raiti's Rides thanks I forgot about lights and wheels so I added those to my post :)
Thank you sir for having my back!
Raiti's Rides you’re very welcome my friend
Agreed 100%
I really appreciate your positive attitude, especially in the comments. I can tell you love cars.
That is really nice of you to say! Thanks you for your great support!
I had a 15 wrx great car ,I traded it in for a 16 STi no looking back .You can make a wrx just as fast or faster than an STi but it will never be an STi...Love that STi rumble ...
The STi is a very special car! I am so glad that you are enjoying her!
@@RaitisRides thanks
Yes of course! I hope she brings you many smiles per miles!
I am not here to hate on anyone. Congrats on your WRX. It is a fun car and I know will bring you plenty of smiles per miles!
Thank you so much for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Almost the same story here, though I owned my '18 WRX for 18 months before i finally upped to the STi.
Thank you so much for sharing your awesome input and personal experience.
if you want stock, warranty covered 300 hp , interior exterior upgrades go with the STI. if you don't care, want more bang for your bucks, no warranty and rather customize on your own get the WRX. There is no need to down talk for people who got the STI or WRX. I honestly wanted the rumble and didn't care if it cost 10k more.
Dylan Park I agree with you 💯! What year is your Subaru?
I have a 2017 wrx limited and it has all the power and fun I need. I think most people (not all) would be plenty happy with wrx over sti. Let's be honest, the wing attracts alot of people just put one on a wrx and save the money.
Joe I really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work sir!
Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment!
I'm happy with my 2018 wrx!
It's a really great car! What color did you get?
Both are great. Doesn’t matter. WRX. STI. Supra. EVO. Type R. GTR. JDM always and forever.
I totally agree with you!
I totally agree with you! Variety is the spice of life and I can appreciate each one for what it is! Thank you for your great comments!
That is really awesome of you to say! I totally agree with your thoughts!
I could practically see the bulge in his pants when he talked about the STi.
Lmfao
LMFAOOO!! Why didn’t he like this comment. ? I saw the bulge in his pants too
wtf is wrong with you, why would you be looking there that's weird lol.
Darth George
You the type that likes to look down when going to the men’s room!
Very good points!
Thank you so much for the awesome compliment! I am so glad that you got a 2019 STi! It really is a great car! What color did you get?
Raiti's Rides #worldreallyblue 💙😃
PERFECT color! That has always been my favorite!
@@RaitisRides Thanks so much! I'm usually a silver/black/charcoal guy...so WRB was a big step...All Good tho!
@@justdrive7317 you really can't go wrong with any of those colors!
Thank you so much for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Fog lights deleted always baffles me. The old STI used to have covers, I get that, but to remove them completely.....?
doryanthes67 I feel the same exact way! I appreciate you watching!😊👍🏻
The steering responsive headlights have very good coverage, except for the area right in front of the car. I've added the Prolightz LED fog light set which fills that gap.
Thank you for sharing your great personal experience and solution to the problem!
doryanthes67 they stopped rally racing a long ass time ago maybe ending 2007. I appreciate the sentiment of a long time fan though.
Thank you so much for sharing your awesome in-depth feedback! I appreciate you watching!
I have the 2018 WRX with Sport-Tech package (here in Canada) and I feel like its the best WRX you can get out of all the other models. It doesn't have the square light on the bumper and it comes stock with OEM 18" wheels that look really nice.
Thank you for sharing that info John!
Dude u answered all my questions without me even asking you, Im going for it man STI
The biggest reason that i dont buy WRX is because there is STi.
That makes perfect sense! I can appreciate that!
@@metaljew4456 You did extremely well with your Focus ST! I can totally understand where you are coming from. How does she handle in the winter?
Raiti's Rides ; What up Joe. She handles like absolute 💩 doo doo like every high performance car with high performance tires. No they are not summer Pirelli P Zero tires now. The Conti-Sport tires are long gone...but even with all season tires FWD is terrible in the snow. I don’t understand why everyone thinks it’s great in the snow. I guess if you put a full set of Blizzaks on anything it will go thru the snow.
Very true about the Blizzaks!
Thank you so much for sharing your input and perspective! You make some really good points!
Yeap even with all the enthusiasm, still don’t see the 10k difference.
You need to go drive one!
Raiti's Rides you need to drive a wrx with a smart 3k into it!
I totally agree and that should be happening soon! So stay tuned!
I tried to go drive one. The salesperson was like "oh, you just bought a WRX a few weeks ago? I guess you aren't actually in the market to buy anything, so I'll pretend I'm busy and hope you go away."
EmissaryGW2 now that sounds like an idiot of a salesperson!😞
I have a 2017 base model wrx and thank you for making this video. I am a new Subaru owner and this is what I. Talking about. A great community.
Thanks Paul for sharing your thoughts! I really appreciate you watching!
Thank you so much for sharing that great input from your experience! I am so glad that you are enjoying your STI!
You also could’ve just changed the headers if you want it to have the boxer rumble
Thanks for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Thank you so much for sharing your detailed info. You being up some very good points! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment!
If youre looking for fuel range, low end power, and a cvt gearbox,
the stis not that car for you.
The sti is a better drivers car in every regard.
Youre looking for a highway beater.
@@XxUltimateGodzXx and he said 100 is max in canada. Lol
I think he only drives to the nearest walmart.
And youre absolutely right. 3ple lsd is insane. +, dccd.
I agree with you a 100%! The Sti just has a wonderful feel to it!
You are spot on!
That is really awesome! I am so glad to hear that you are loving your WRX! What color did you get?
Both great cars and both are a lot of fun to drive. Perfect comparison analysis Joe. No question that although they're very similar - the driving experience with each is very different. I enjoy them both but I really appreciate everything that feels ramped up about the STI.
That you for sharing your well though out perspective! I really appreciate your continued support!
Imlikethemoviesh I appreciate you watching and giving such s great perspective! Thank you for your awesome support!
STi owners with a blown engine due to ringland failure: "Should've gotten the WRX."
I've owned 3 Stis and never had an issue!
I'm glad you covered the headers. People left and right want to buy my 2013 WRX for the sound alone
Very good input and perspective! Thank you so much for sharing, and for watching!
Do some research. Before I got my STi, i did look into that as well. The rings on the 2019+ STI is thicker, to my knowledge its the same exact piston as the STI type RA as well.

And supposedly this is supposed to be the last non-hybrid STi we will see as they are looking at a Hybrid performance model for 2025
Daniel Locke great color!🏆
Points out the sti logo on the side of the car like its a plus and worth the money LMAO
Thank you so much for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
You sound like a WRX owner 😹
Wish I could find my crystal ball! lol
Yeah I think I'm gonna agree and just wait for the refresh.
Thanks for another great video, Joe.
You are so very welcome! I hope it is not disappointing!
Raiti's Rides I'm hoping the 2020 wrx it's not as ugly as the concept pictures.
You are awesome man. Your videos helped me on my decision. Bought my 2019 STI three weeks ago. Been wanting one since I was in high school. I’m 29 and I said screw this I’m pulling the trigger!
Thank you so much for saying that! I really appreciate you taking the time to say that and congrats with your new STI!
Bro same here. I just bought a 2019 sti limited in red a week ago. I've been wanting one since high school and I'm 28.
Great work.
I am totally with you on that! I really appreciate your awesome support and taking the time to watch and comment!
3 LSDs? I thought 2? Center is not?
Steve W He shows the full lock in the video on the center diff. Finger controlled or computer but you can only fully lock it safely on a loose surface. Anyways why not just keep it rear wheel biased. Electronics who would have guessed
Yes sir you are correct!
Thanks for pointing that out. I had to go over to Engineering Explained's channel and see it in a bit more detail. Learned something new about my ride!
Both those Subarus look great .One of few good cars left that are still made in my opinion. I think that oldschool engine is good you dont find them today.
I totally agree with you! Driving the Sti has such an analog feel to it!
Raiti's Rides Thank you for bringing me along. I posted my STI on one of your posts on Facebook. Hope you see it.
Reign Xzile thank you sir I saw it! She is a beauty!😊👍🏻
Raiti's Rides Thanks.😎
You are so very welcome!
It really is an awesome machine!
Also the reason why the wrx has pink was because in japan subaru used to honor the Japanese Cheery Blossom and Sti on the early models were pink to resemble that!
You are 100% correct! Thank you for sharing your input!
@luvluca toni Now that is one heck of a comment! Thank you for being part of the this journey with me!
The holes in the fake vents are actually for the horns, the horns are just under the fake vent holes so they can be heard.
Thanks for your input and perspective! I appreciate you watching!
The biggest difference is the transmission. The sti gearbox can take the abuse if you upgrade it to 500hp whereas the wrx cannot. Wait for new sti 2020 model, buy one year after launch.
Very good point! Thanks for sharing!
The WRX tranny handles 500hp just fine with upgraded clutch
I love my 2017 STI. Hands down the best, most fun, versatile car I have ever owned. I would recommend a STI to anyone. I love driving.
I am so happy to hear that you love your STi! They are really awesome cars! How many miles do you have on yours?
Veterror that is so awesome! I’m glad the whole family gets to enjoy her!😊👍🏻
Now if only they made EJ257s closed deck from the factory, with thermostats that open up 10° sooner, and pistons that were not hypereutectic, then we have a winner!
You just knocked it out f the park!
This. A thousand times this. If nothing else, they could give us a nice final edition before sending the EJ off into the sunset, with a closed deck, forged pistons, a 20G, and a tune that is more aggressive than the Subaru of America norm?
Zac Paul Amen brother
Great review. Should be above all others trying to describe the difference. Level headed and super detail oriented.
Thanks for saying that Joe! I really appreciate that!
Makes sense. Thanks Chad..definitely going with WRX
I love the wrx, its a pretty decent car, but if you have the extra 10k, then why not the sti.
Great video Joe........big up to Tom as well for his awesome camera work.
Gary Green thank you for giving Tom some love! I appreciate you sharing your perspective!😊👍🏻
With that extra 10k you could buy something better. V8 supercharged perhaps.
@@Rodknockandy without a center diff wrx will never be better
Wrx sti
I’ve owned both, just get the wrx, grab a Cobb access port, get the map from MAPerformace and that should be all you need. Way less expensive outright, cheaper on insurance, way better gas mileage, and best of all it’s faster with the stock parts so you keep that sweet sweet warranty. Profit $$$ as they also keep their value better as well so you’re g2g on your next car.
Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience! I really appreciate it, and I'm sure so do the others!
You are still not getting the cup holder cover option 😂.
Very true ! lol
@@RaitisRides 😂
But the acessport voids warranty...
Great job showing the differences. I'm definitely getting the STI . Nice addition to my Hellcat.
I think you totally hit the nail on the head! I am keeping my fingers crossed that Subaru gets it right!
There is and you can put unequal length headers on. My friends done it.
Yeah but unequal length headers are not efficient and would probably negatively affect the performance no?
That rumble means the technology is old nothing else.
@@gipsyavenger9829 yep, the FA20 uses a twin-scroll turbo, which UEL headers will negatively impact it worse than the EJ25
For me, the WRX, especially in limited trim, is the more responsible purchase between the two, especially as a daily driver. But man, the STI really tempts you.
Very good points Frank!
Wanted to know this so thanks for the review. Keep em coming
Thank you so much! I am so happy that I can help! Stay tuned because I have more Subaru reviews coming!
Thank you for sharing your input and perspective! I appreciate you watching!
Here's my opinion based on my last 3 cars (07 STI stage 1, 11 STI Stage 2, and 14 GTR FBO/e85):
Unless I'm tracking these cars, I'd find it hard to justify the extra $10K.
Thanks for sharing that great info about your experience!
Yes it is. I blew mine and my neighbor blew his. I’m now in a wrx. Couldn’t be happier
I love 💘 SUBARU WRX STI..it Can Handel Rough Road..Cross Stream..it Can Even JUMP it's a Rally Car.Breed ..305HP Not Bad at all..I Just Love it../ Watching From The Philippines ..
Thanks for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you watching!
Two words...Gearbox & Brakes 👌🏻
Yes sir! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
it loooks so good in black, love that thing man
I am so glad that you like these Chris!
Everything you stated between the STI and WRX, could still be bought and even customized for less than 6k, besides the engine.
Yes sir I totally agree with you! Except for the special diffs that are on the Sti!
That’s so true
Front and rear brakes would probably cost you $4k? So i'd have to disagree with the less than 6k price to buy everything.
Yes sir!
i am not sure about DCCD ...
The biggest kick in the dick about the newer WRX's is that they dropped the 2.5l from the previous generation. The '08-'14 WRX's felt so much more snappier, especially when you opened up the intake and exhaust. Sure, the 5 speed was made of glass, but it was a damn fun car.
Thank you for your great detailed input from your experience!
When you buy a Wrx and a week later you get second thoughts, and start to remember what the Sti was like and why it’s worth 10k more!
You hit the nail on the head!
Thank you so much for sharing your input and perspective! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch!
That is an excellent point! Thank you so much for watching!
Amazing video, and thank you for that magazine you gaved me
Cristho Sanchez I’m so glad you liked the magazine and video! I am grateful for your support!😊👍🏻🏆
Just picked up my STI and I love it.
Forgot to talk about the different turbochargers on each car.
I figured it out after we were done filming! I'm sorry about that! It's one of the downsides of doing reviews non-scripted! I appreciate you watching!
This is how comparison videos should be made.
That is so awesome of you to say Rico! Thank you!
I’ve watched couple of your videos before but never subscribed but now I finally did.
Thank you so much for coming back and now being on this journey with me! I really appreciate your support!
Completely forgot about the electronic center diff. That’s honestly a great feature
Oh I meant I* forgot about the STi’s electronic diff
Nv7_Raptor that’s for taking the time to watch!
Yay more subaru videos! :) still loving mine 😀
I am so glad that you are still enjoying yours! They are really fun cars!
You forgot to mention that the STI has front and rear LSD's, whereas the WRX does not. That, IMO, is a huge difference.
Thanks for that extra info!
The big difference is that this video has Subaru in it and I have a Honda Civic 😂
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and share your input!
I know how you feel!
I actually laughed out loud, shit haha
You buy the wrx because it's cheaper or because you can't afford the sti, same reason people buy smaller engine camaros, mustangs, challengers. They know not everyone can afford the "ideal" drivetrain so they make a cheaper option. people buy what they can afford (hopefully)
Big C thank you for sharing your input.😊👍🏻
I love your Subaru videos Joe!!
Vittorio Rossi thank you so much for for the compliment! You know that I have more to come!
Another awesome video Joe!!! You are very talented at what you do!!! Have a great night and God bless ya brother!!!😀😀😀
Shaun that is so wonderful of you to say! Thank you so much for being part of this journey with me! God bless you with health and happiness!
why do you have 2019 in the title when your showing a 2018. They have different upgrades for the 2019 in terms of engine and transmission,.
Thank you for pointing that out! I will take care of that!
In Kenya, we have the 2015 2.0DIT WRX S4 with 296hp! It's a beast man.
Watching this wearing my Raiti’s Ride shirt 😎
Thank you so much for your AWESOME support! I am so very grateful and could not do this without you!
The WRX would be just fine for me. I'm a nerd so I like the lil turbo swoosh sound. Lol.
I must be a nerd as well because I love that sound as well!
I wish the fake vents were replaced by STI branded fog light covers like the old Blob eye generation. I had a chance to buy an STI or a WRX and I went WRX because it was going to to be my commuter daily. No track days planned.
Vm Phil I'm sure someone will make some covers eventually. 3D printers have at it
@@TheBishop12 actually some one already did..I've seen the finished product and it looks fantastic. Subaru should have thought of it though.
I totally understand where you are coming from. I though the same thing about the covers! I think you can't go wrong with either one!
There are many options available now from aftermarket companies. I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Yeah it would be nice to not have to go and buy more stuff like that after buying the car.
Excelent video 🔝🏁🏁. I have a old 98 wrx 👍 with 200.000 miles from Uruguay 🇺🇾
The sound seems like the biggest difference. I'd pay more for the rumble every day of the week
Amen! I am right there with you!
The noise alone is worth every penny. 😂
great video! I'd personally buy an FA WRX and mod that for that extra $10k as its more reliable and wants to build power better and quicker :D
Thank you for the compliment and for sharing your perspective!
Get yourself a 1998-2001 2.5 rs coupe and swap an sti engine in there. It’s both lighter and better looking than the 2018 sti.
Sincerely,
22b body kit RSTI owner
I would love to review a 22b RSTI!
Great comparison video, looking forward to buying my next sti.
