I've watched so many colour grading videos from top experts over the past 3 years, and this video just makes everything so simple and effective and efficient.
I started studying colors and transformations 3 to 4 months ago, and your tutorial was by far the simplest and significantly the most common of all, thanks for sharing!
Terrific videos. Not only do I love the minimal approach of your node tree(s) but also the way you explained the relevance / importance of each node. Like many others, I've been looking for the silver bullet when it comes to node trees and this is damn close. I think adding a parallel branch for secondary grading, power windows, etc. (similar to Cullen Kelly's) and you're there. Great work.
Thank you. This is so helpful! I can't wait to try. Could you share more about how to export in Davinci? Like what taggings rec709? because I feel the color changes after export.😢
Glad I could help! To be honest I haven’t messed around with tagging too much but for export settings I usually follow youtube’s recommended bitrate for whatever resolution my video is being exported at, as well as making sure I export in the rec709-a color space. Haven’t had any issues with color shifts yet 👍
Yessir! If you don’t feel the need to color correct I believe you could go straight from your BMPCC log to Cineon, but I’d always recommend leaving that extra rec709 step just in case you want to correct your footage before applying the lut 🤙
Hi, thank's for the tutorial. I was wondering why you add all grading nodes after the lut. The lut suppose to be at the end. If you grade after the lut you loose information off the clip. But if you grade before the lut you still have all infornation off the clip.
i did the grading after because I just didn’t like how it looked with the LUT at the end. I understand that that’s how you get the most accurate emulation but the lifted blacks were just not to my liking. I also believe you’re supposed to add effects like halation after the grade to ensure they aren’t tampered with.
@@kyle_munoz halation and grain should indeed be after the lut. I suggest take the test. Play, lift with your color wheel offset settings till its limit before the lut and do the same after the lut. And take a look at your parade scope. You Will notice when you do this after the lut the whole wave is going up. And when you lift before the lut the wave is going very gradual. Cheers.
I see it. But the LUT has a default amount that it lifts the blacks and drops the whites regardless of the exposure of the clip before applying. I’ll try it out again but for the time being, this is my process
I like your video don't get me wrong it's great to watch and so easy to follow not over filled and not under explained just perfect but i have a gripe with LUT's myself as i feel tehy take all the fun out of working with colour to get the desired like you said in the video with 4 steps you was pretty much there what i enjoy is the process to create that look that the LUT does so for me personally i try and steer clear of them however i know they have their uses such as if you are time constrained they are very handy i get that but yeah generally i am not a fan. Would love to hear your thoughts on what i have said.
i completely agree with you. The fun part is creating the look but like you said, that can be very time consuming. But when i do create a look from scratch, i like to save it so i don’t have to do it over again which then kind of turns into a LUT in itself? In this case the LUT is indented to emulate a specific look but in general i do typically like to create my own grades from scratch.
Bro lol how do you only have 1k subs man please don’t stop creating this was great info. I’ve been looking for ways to get a more aesthetic look for my vlogs and I’m going to try this man thank you
Good question! It’s because I already corrected from slog to rec709 before this grading step. If i hadn’t, then it would make sense to put slog in the cst as you said.
Definitely! I actually have a whole video color correcting video. I didn’t use SLOG but all the principles are the same. Check it out and let me know if ai should make one specifically for SLOG
Bro, love your videos! One simple question... Still using Cine 2 PP in this clip that you are editing? I Thought you mentioned log in the video. Would love to see a filming (exposing / PP) to editing and grading video. Keep ur great job
I appreciate you! I actually used both. The night time shot was using Cine2 and the daytime shot was in Slog2; I just corrected them before applying the grade so they look similar. I actually just got another comment asking for that kind of video so I'll definitely get on it!
Nice video 👏. But what do you think about using the color slice for density and film look creator for the Kodak emulation. Or is this because they can’t be used in the free version of Davinci
lovely video bro! one thing i learned that might help you out with color density is adding a node before your HSV and changing the color space to HSL. from there you turn channels 1 and 3 off and decrease the gain. what it’ll do is decrease additive saturation (which brings luminance to your colors). additive saturation is the same saturation that davinci works with by default in the primaries menu. from there what you’ll want to do is play with both HSL and HSV and achieve the density you find most appropriate to the image.
Awesome!! I guess now that I think about it I could have just corrected within the clips themselves and then added the clips to the group. I guess i just wanted to continue my workflow from my correction process.
Great video 🙂 thank you! I have a question? How can I work with raw material on the timeline and still have colors? What is the timeline setting in Vlog? Thank you
Hey thanks! I didn’t change anything with regards to timeline settings. The clips in the timeline are still raw but I corrected them individually before adding the grade. So if i were to disable the adjustment layer that has the grade, each clip still has their own color correction node tree. But if i disable that correction then you’d see just the straight out of camera footage. For more explanation check out my color correction video, I think it could help explain what I mean
Ain’t gonna lie I subbed within the first 20 seconds of the video. Got my attention real quick. Can tell you really put in work here! Definitely gonna try out some of these tips. Keep it up!
your instructions are very clear and precise, thank you. For some reason my footage just looks faded and purple or blue-ish (depending on the film look chosen). It has always been this way when I try somthing with cineon. Any advice would be much appreciated
I appreciate it! There’s a couple things i would check, first make sure that your CST’s input gamma and color spaces are correct for your specific footage. If they are, try to correct your footage before applying the CST and LUT (Correct white balance, exposure, and contrast) . I don’t personally use the fuji luts because i find they do look really purple but if the 2383 lut is too blue I would just turn down the Key Output Gain. Let me know if this helps!
Nice work bro! My only suggestion would be if you could upload longer versions of your final color gradings like this hollywood style your are explaining ... like a 2 minutes videos. Thanks
For sure! Most of my Vlogs are graded using this process so if you want longer examples those could be of use. But I’ll definitely look to have longer clips in my future tutorials.
So if you need to correct your footage before grading I recommend using one adjustment layer per clip, correcting each clip individually, and then adding all the adjustment layers to a group to apply the film grade like i showed in the video. If you don't need to correct your footage, you can just do one big adjustment layer across all of your clips and apply the grade to it. Hope this helps!
lol “Can’t Be Asked to track this” I don’t have the full version of davinci so tracking that picture to the paper i was holding would’ve taken forever.
@@kyle_munoz could you also create a cinematic look type of color grading that greenish hue if possible would be amazing if you could do a tutorial thanks
I dont get so much videos to work with. Can I replicate the same grading in Photoshop on my Raw photos too? or should I import those into davinci and then grade them there?
You don't need adjustment layers for that. You can put all the clips with S-LOG3 for example in one group and put the conversion lut on the post-group page. Then make clip specific adjustments (i.e. exposure) on every clip individually. The benefit is that you have full control over each individual clip and its settings, but you can also do global adjustments to the group. Great video though. 👍
Yeah that’s a great idea. For this specific workflow I have correcting and grading in separate sections just for clarity sake, but I think condensing them to the way you described is better for everyday workability. I’ll definitely try it out thanks for the tip!
i’m just learning color grading and everyone i watches so far said for their CST input and output to slog/s-cine tone. i was wondering if your CST choice is specific to the kodak lut
Love the question! This is the second part of my color editing process. In the first part (Color Correction) is where I use a LUT to convert the SLOG footage to Rec709. So since i did that in a prior step, for this CST I can use Rec709 and Gamma 2.4 as the inputs. Let me know if that helps!
I think there may be an Apple Log option for your input on the CST. If not, then you’d need to convert the Apple Log to rec709 somehow before applying the CST as i showed.
Hey Kyle ... two questions. First - thanks for sharing all your knowledge with the rest of us! Second - I'm not an editor (nor do I want to be) but I do use Blackmagic Camera app (on iPhone) the app has the capability to import "LUTS" ... my question to you is there a Kodak 2383 Luts one can use in the Black magic camera app? If you can share any information, that would be awesome. I suspect there are other filmmakers out there who may be interested also. 😉 🎬 🎥
The only way I could think to do it would be to create the CST and 2383 LUT nodes in Davinci and export them together as it’s own LUT to then import into the app. So it’s a LUT within a LUT lol
There are many. the best ones You implement on Davinci wide gammut. I also have some for Arri log C4 and many other color spaces. the native ones shown in this video considered to be lowest quality of them all, since it's been done only in 10 bits.
If you’re using UNcorrected Slog-3, you put “S-Gamut3.Cine” for the Input Color Space and “S-Log3” for the input Gamma. If it’s already corrected to Rec709 you should be able to use the settings I showed (Rec709 , Gamma 2.4). Let me know if that works!
I dont know if you use know of this and don't use it or just don't know about it but there's a super quick drop down menu for aspect ration built into davinci. In the edit page just click on timeline and down at the bottom there should be a drop down menu for aspect ratio and it will apply it to the timeline. Idk if that helps just a super quick and easy way if you don't want to go into fusion.
@@kyle_munoz No I guess I called it the wrong thing its the same steps but output banking instead of aspect ratio at the bottom of the timeline dropdown menu in the edit page. edit page--> timeline--> outputbanking
It depends. In this case, I corrected the footage in a separate step before doing any of the grading so it’s in the Rec-709/Gamma 2.4 color space. If you check out my color correction video I explain everything there.
@@kyle_munoz Yea, I agree that yt is good place but there are plenty of videos and honestly I can't watch each of them. So, I'm looking for something structured program that explains basic to advance stuff.
Definitely looking to do this in the future but I’m still rocking with the free version of Davinci for the moment. Just tryna squeeze everything out of it that i can lol
Very good tips!! :) But ALWAYS export at the right ratio, never with black bars for the sake of widescreens and cinema projections, unless you want your 2,39 image to be inside a box :/
what’s the “right” ratio? 16:9? 2:1? Cuz 16:9 has bars on the sides when played on phones, and 2:1 has bars on top and bottom when watching on a computer. 🤷♂️
@@kyle_munoz It’s a big learning curve lol, but I really like it! The only thing I was struggling with was the 8bit when I tried colorgrading but I found a solution and I’m definitely going to try this tutorial!
Hey Kyle … thanks for sharing - greatly appreciate. One question, I take it you have to have the studio version NOT the free version of Di Vinci Resolve to do what you are doing?
nono, i have a separate video explaining how to correct your footage from log to rec709 before you do anything I show in this video. It should add contrast and saturation to your footage before applying the LUT nodes
Dude what an awesome job! I've just learned a lot of stuff😃🔥 and just subscribed!
AMAZING MAN!
Thank you! How’s everything going with the camera!??
@@kyle_munoz It’s a big learning curve lol, but I really like it! The only thing I was struggling with was the 8bit when I tried colorgrading but I found a solution and I’m definitely going to try this tutorial!
Awesome!! Glad to hear it!
Hey Kyle … thanks for sharing - greatly appreciate. One question, I take it you have to have the studio version NOT the free version of Di Vinci Resolve to do what you are doing?
Nope, this is all in the FREE version of Davinci! Pretty great right?!?
Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it
my footage looks too flat? what color managmet settings for it?
Did you correct your footage to rec709 before doing this grade?
@@kyle_munoz yes exactly like here in the video but as soon as I add the kodak lut, the footy becomes more flat
nono, i have a separate video explaining how to correct your footage from log to rec709 before you do anything I show in this video. It should add contrast and saturation to your footage before applying the LUT nodes
@@kyle_munoz oh! Okay thank you 😅
no problem! let me know if you have any more questions about it
Sick , thank you sir! +1subscriber
I appreciate it!!
nice !!!!
Thanks!!
thank you
Glad I could help!
Well done Kyle (new subs). :))
thank you!!
Great video🫶🏻
Glad you liked it!!
where will i get the lut?
the lut comes with davinci
Wanna see you color grade with cineprint
i’ve been considering getting cineprint for so long!! It looks like so much fun to use! If I end up getting it, I’ll definitely make a video about it.
Dude what an awesome job! I've just learned a lot of stuff😃🔥 and just subscribed! I used to grade my footage over 10 years now on FCPX but now that I bought the Panasonic Lumix GH7 where you can import lut's into the camera I wanted to creat my own Lut's to import them into my GH7 camera. Final Cut don't let me export Lut's so I have to switch over Davinci now and I have to learn everything from scratch. I just created a video on TH-cam where I explain the process and that I need to learn Davinci.. If you don't mind, I would love to hear your feedback on that video too? Have a good evening and I hope to hear from you...
😌🔥🔥❤
I suddenly feel 10 times better. Let me do few on my badly filmled log footage. Anybody? Group work.
😂
@@kyle_munoz I swear 😂
you’ll get the hang of it dw
@@kyle_munoz Thanks chief
