I sold my vb for the new type r. Really loved my vb and now totally love the type r. My main gripe is how quiet the Honda is. It is so quiet that it is somewhat difficult to drive at first. I kinda miss that I felt like I could park the wrx anywhere and never really stress about it. The type r gets a lot more attention than I was expecting and it stresses me out a bit, parking in busy places.

Extra $14k? I paid $29.5k for my 2022 WRX. CTR were going for $60k plus near me… it’s not $31k plus better car than a WRX. If we’re up to $55k+, screw CTR and WRX, I’m just gonna get an M2 manual.

If i took it to the track which i didnt, it might have made more sense. Plus you cant mod them, or you kill everything honda did to make them special.
Agreed. I don’t think the CTR is even remotely close to its MSRP price either. Owners try to give all this hogwash arguments that it’s the best handling FWD ever blah blah blah. Cool. On paper. Sure. But how often are they exploiting the cars handling capabilities on a track? Not often if at all. A good driver in a WRX or GTI could easily keep up with a CTR in a canyon. If the CTR had something more special than it just being 2.0T and FWD, then I might be more supportive of its price. But that’s all it really is…a 2.0T FWD car. Its price reflect more of its name badge and internet “hype” more than anything. I would have just as much fun in a much cheaper GTI, and probably more fun in an AWD WRX, on the daily, for a lot less money!
For me, alot of it comes down to weather. I had a tuned 23 civic si and I would always say it was basically a baby type r making around 270 whp and around 300wtq. I live in Oregon and any time the roads were even barely damp, the si would spin in first if you were trying to even be a little aggressive. I also owned a 21 type r and they are fun cars now doubt, but for the money and performance and even the sounds, WRX takes the W for me. Right now my wrx makes 365whp and 415wtq and I can put all of that to the ground and barely make the tires chirp. Its hard to justify the price difference for me taking those things into consideration. Now if ur canyon driving on dry surface and no cars in front of you, for sure, go type r, but any condition other than dry surface and Im choosing the wrx all day.
I'm working on a ek coupe build right now. Restoring and modernizing it, has push to start, remote start, trunk pop solenoid, usb c fast charging ports, the list keeps going. Hopefully by next year I'll be doing a k series swap and awd conversion. I get more props in my civic than my vb unfortunately. My civic is more of just a daily cruiser for now that I don't have to worry about getting state reffed in. The subie only comes out at night
I got my Type-R $2500 above MSRP with no dealer options on it a few months ago. I sent the ECU out to get cloned and unlocked to have access for tuning. The original ECU is still locked while the second ECU is unlocked.
A note on tuning: From reading about these cars, I believe the pcm has to be jailbroken before rewriting can take place. One could clone a factory ecu for if the car ever has to go to the dealer for warranty work, unless you find a more lenient dealership that doesn't look down on modifications as much as others may.
And lets speak it here. If. IF, you can get it 46k with the insane markups on these. There is zero issue getting any model Subaru at MSRP and often less. So that 14k more is bit of a fallacy. Still, hell of a car, no doubt.
Yeah especially base WRX vs Type R with typical $5k mark up/accessories. The difference will be $20k and Subaru financing rates are better so double the payment
There are so many cars that are far superior for 60-65k... and lets keep in mind is FWD. I owned an FK8 for 8 months, added power modifiers and all it did was spin the front end in first and second gear. The type R is only good in stock format or oem+
Honda Employee here. I just got to the part about the rear view mirror. They do come off from the mounting point on the windshield daily easily and the mounting mechanism is stupid finicky to reinstall it on. If the installation is done wrong too many times it wears spun the mounting surface and a new windshield is needed 🙃 I have not seen the mirror or the swivel portion get messed up though.
I was posed with this dilemma a few months back. I ended up picking a 2024 WRX TR. I have experience with an FK8 CTR and they are great cars. I am happy with my choice with a TR and I know I could not outright afford a type R. Awais, good review and I appreciate you comparing the two cars indirectly. A type R is great if you can afford one, but I know they marked them up and financing is less favorable on top of that. I was able to get my TR under MSRP. I am glad I found your channel you make it awesome VB content. Keep it up!
I went the other way always honda to WRX finally and that was the one thing that stood out tremendously was the shifter. It just works so easily on the Hondas and your not forcing gears and everything in that department just feels so right, idk how its been this many years and the WRX feels like it does today for the most important part of a manual
HONDA MANUALS ARE DEF THE GOAT !! I HAD A TYPE R INTEGRA DRIVETRAIN IN MY OLD INTEGRA BUT EVEN THE GSR TRANS WAS A DREAM TO ROW THROUGH THE GEAR. WHEN I HOP OUT OF MY NB MIATA INTO MY WRX, IVE GOT TO ADMIT, IM REALLY LET DOWN AT HOW CLUNKY IT IS AND DIFFICULT TO GET INTO GEARS SOMETIMES. ITS THE MAIN REASON IM GETTING AN 2019 STI SETUP SOON. HONDA MANUALS WILL LITERALLY SUCK THE SHIFTER INTO THE NEXT GEAR WHENEVER YOU GET CLOSE..WITH OUR CARS YOU REALLY HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOURBGOLLOWING THROUGH WITH YOUR GEAR CHANGES ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO HAUL ASS
For that price, it should 100% be awd... they made awd civics in japan... so the "heritage" part can be thrown out the window. Its just harder to balance a car for the NBR with AWD... and its harder to cheat like honda did and get away with it.
I’ve always been a Honda boy but I turned to the subie side because of stupid type r mark ups. I’m now a Proud owner of a new WRX. I could appreciate both. The type r is a precision weapon. And the new wrx is a performance bargain with great bones and a great potential.
now, I didnt tune the 23 vb limited I had but, Im in a 24 golf gti and it is faster. It does lack the punch at low (2500) rpms but when you get going it's crazy. Love your vids. Actually wish I still had my vb, but such is life. Glad to see you truckin on. I think you're gonna buy the next sti whenever it drops. Again, love the vids dude.
Interesting point of view to see your review. I did also drive a CTR before buying a car, I also drove the WRX, Golf R, GR Corolla and Elantra N. The CTR felt huge to me inside and I hated that it didn't have a hand brake, I don't see many people point this out. An enthusiast car without a hand brake? It's also not a true hatchback, it's really a liftback, much the same as my wife's Prius which nobody calls a hatchback. It's also a 4 seater, hence your confusion with the rear cup holders as there is no rear middle seat. I ultimately bought a GR Corolla and couldn't be happier. For less money I got AWD, a heated steering wheel, heated seats, a real handbrake, a true hot hatch, and it seat 5 people, not that I really use the back seat much. The reason I picked it, it was the most fun to drive of all the cars, and it wasn't even close on the back roads that I tested them all on.
They are nice automobiles, and the pinnacle of what you can extract from a small car. Trouble is that the 'classic' hot hatch was, by definition, AFFORDABLE. What good is spending performance money and getting performance, you sort of expect it don't you? At $45k (if you can get one at this price) you can also choose a nice A4, 330i, etc. and get AWD as an option (330i). Fewer people would bother you in traffic, and you'd also have quiet when you want it and more comfort. The WRX is one of the last of the breed that you can get a $30-32k and you get AWD and more displacement to play with if you tune. I had a '96 Acura GS-R that I adored, that 5 speed was silkier, shorter and faster to shift than anything I've owned in the decades since.
I feel like if you're going to spend an extra 12k You may as well do the STI swap, AP/tune, intake and coilovers...seems like a way better way to spend 12k
I've had my 2015 wrx for over 7 years now. Love it to death but I owned strictly Honda before hand and would switch to a Type R in a heartbeat after driving my buddies fk8. Everything was just better to me. I'm looking to getting a corvette next though.
Ever since they've turbocharged the TypeR's - I have been on the fence. I miss the old days of high revving lower displacement 4 cylinders - I miss my EG Hatch (and the GSR swap I had - it was my favorite of all) - a friend of mine had a B16B EK Hatch (kind of a type R clone) - it was phenomenal to drive - yes they lacked on torque - but winding an engine out to 9k rpms (in some cases beyond) was an experience in itself - especially hearing the change over and the intake roar. I miss those days. I just recently bought a ridgeline - was eyeing the WRX hard - then the Outback (I needed something with a bit more ground clearance and to be honest at 42 - kind of over daily driving a manual trans car (especially in traffic) ). I also looked at Tacoma's - at the end the Ridgeline had more of a discount because its not bro macho looking or whatever - but i know the J series and I know they can go the distance - my wife also bought a new Honda as well - imo for a daily driver you can't go wrong with either a Honda, Toyota or Subaru - which is my preference moving forward - after 15 years of owning nothing but american (brands) vehicles. I also have a '12 X5 35D (diesel) and a 2011 335D as my weekend cars - i maybe selling both and getting a WRX soon as a weekend car.
Apples and Oranges Awais... FWD vs AWD... WRX vs CTR (STI is closer comparison) CTR is a dedicated track car (that somehow still overheats lol) ... The answer is no, its not worth anything over MSRP.. in fact I think that is too much. They had it right with the FK8 when you could get them around 35-38k... I owned an FK8, and while it handled like it was on rails, once i started modding the car for power, its limitations from FWD became obvious very quickly. If you just want something for track duty on the weekends. the CTR is a great car, if you could get them at a decent price... which you cannot.
Truthfully I don't think it's a dedicated track car. It's a car that can do great on the track ( like other fun performance cars) but it still is a street car first. They did still cut some corners that prevents it from being as good ok the track as it could be. I wish I had the ability to take all these cars to a track alone and do reviews. Now that would be a dream.
The CTR is overpriced, the WRX is overpriced, the Golf R, GTI…basically everything brand new, that is somewhat sporty, is overpriced nowadays. The only sporty vehicle I can think of that isn’t overpriced from the factory is the Elantra N. But then you have to suck up the multi-year payments on it, and though it might be fun in the beginning, after the “honeymoon phase” is over, those monthly payments are going to hit hard… Best bet is to buy vehicles after a couple years. Still get the same car. Still have the factory, and possibly, even added on dealer extended warranty’s. Still get the same driving experience, but it all costs you way less.
If I lived in a climate where fwd would be acceptable year round I would 100% have one of these , that being said awd is king up here in wi especially with the physical handbrake, I think it’s stupid to have a wrx in California or Florida or in the south in general they are heavier and worse gas mileage imo
Thats why i swapped up in NH, and i also really scratch my head at the mass amount of cali/florida WRXs you see atleast on youtube. AWD is nice sure but when its not needed for a climate im not sure why youd choose a wrx over some of the competition lol
Coming from Hondas and I’m an owner of a 2020 Wrx having it for 2 years there a huge difference.I love both platforms but I can’t see myself making that purchase. I say the Wrx is a better car all around but I still got love for those type r it just that type r mark up is ridiculous.
I bought my 22 Wrx on Jan 2023 after my truck was totaled by someone running a stop sign. Was between it and a 20 preowned type r. Type r was a bit more expensive and was used but in immaculate condition with 30k miles. love the Wrx but still wondering what it
This is why I like Honda better in 2024, not that I would ever buy any new car, but I feel like Subaru just hasn't done anything special for us since the s209. If they bring the STI back, that might make up for it, but they are definitely a far cry from where they were in the early 2000's. With Honda, I feel like there's still more effort to give enthusiasts something special.
I liked that the Type R finally became the king of FWD... but at the same time, I miss the days when it was also considered as the biggest underdog amongst the JDM greats. If Subaru makes VB STi, it will be a very interesting competition against Type R by the performance and the price. I would like to see that!
Here in CA most stealerships are selling the Type R for $55-$60k. A huge markup over msrp. Now if some got one for msrp, congrats but it’s unlikely. Also the Acura integra type S is so much better than the type r and only supposed to be incrementally more expensive. However again it is grossly over priced at $65k with markups. I say the market should skip anything in the 300hp range for $50+k. That’s ridiculous. Honestly after the WRX I would just go straight to a M3 or 440i gran coupe, or even an Acura TLX type S. Everything in between is not worth the cheese.
I grew up on Honda and love them but the type r doesn’t do it for me. I actually like the looks of the new integra type s but for the price absolutely not. Honda messed up when the rsx type s came out and they didn’t turbo it. Wrx’s srt4 around the time were more bang for the buck. Newer Hondas don’t do it for me, they’re too heavy and too expensive for what you get. One day my crx will be awd, k swapped with a turbo, a proper Honda.
I agree. I have an 11th gen civic Si which, in my opinion, has a much better interior. The 1.5L motor is crap though, which is why I plan to do a k-swap in the near future.
@HeavyMetalWRX I think you should make a video on Cygnus performance. I like the fact that the videos aren’t biased and you just stick to fact finding and sharing info about the WRX to the subí community.
@@HeavyMetalWRX yea and it's really hard now a days to see who's actually telling the truth. I got a set of his coilovers and will be installing them sometime in the next couple months. So I'll try to keep you updated or make a video about it but be very unbiased and just talk about the coilovers.
@@OilyWRX the problem is it will be very difficult to talk about cygnus performance without being biased. He harassed me for HOURS and got super personal with me. All I did was say he needs to stop making fun of people bagging their WRXs. I'm not even joking. He took it so personal. He started calling out my TH-cam channel ( this was 2 years ago). Said I didn't mean anything to the world, that I was a garbage human , made fun of my appearance, my daughter,. We argued almost the whole day. Then he kicked me out of his FB group and followed me to harass me on the IIR group. This was before I even knew he sold coilovers. Then I found out all the different customer services issues hes had, all the run arounds with warranty and finger pointing. Even the shop I work at has had three separate negative experiences with him as a distributor.

Strange that somehow FA is willing to work with the guy, business is business though.
I just get so annoyed by all the hate talk. If you have a bad experience then let it be if you are there to warn someone just put pictures up and post facts don't need to go back and forth with each other about a brand or seller. Just another day in the Subi community.
I have the 24 wrx tr but the steering feel is not much different than a regular wrx (I had a 22 premium prior) and I got to drive an Integra tech aspec and civic sport touring, both has better steering weight than our wrx so I think honda/acura just got the it dialed way better than anyone
I think your WRX maybe jacked up, my 2024 WRX does not have a jiggly steering wheel going down the highway and you're the only one I've ever heard make that claim. Do agree the shifter is kind of crap though, especially compared to my last car (2019 Miata Club).
It's not jacked up. The dual electric steering has added even more okay that was already in the VA WRX. This is why a few companies have the steering damper thing. I'm considering trying it. The steering rack was changed to allow less rock and bumps to transfer through the rack but that makes it sloppier for driving.
It's simple, no comparison. I've had Sti in the past and I do love Subaru but there is not really a good conparison at all. The Honda R cars and don't veen mention the S2000 which is untouchable on owner satisfaction. You can trun off rev match 👍🏻
For the money you have to spend on a Type R you can almost buy a S Spec Integra, and if you're that close to an S Spec Integra, what else can you buy? 14K more means a hell of a lot of power, handling, and reliability for a WRX. The WRX is a decent sized AWD sedan, and doesn't look like a car a kid with a rich dad would receive as a gift for graduating high school. Also, I blacklist any dealer who price gouges. The biggest turn off has never been the price, it's been the AWD vs FWD difference. I have ear marked 70k total for my TR, leaving 32k for mods and an STI swap, with a bit left over for emergency maintenance. I'll be able to do stuff in the final form that I'd never be able to do in a Type R.
Put that money into the wrx and then there is no more comparison. On top of that, it may have more hp in stock form but it's at like 25 psi already just like the gr corolla. You already know what the vb would put down at 25 psi. Of course at that point you'd want to put in a sti Trans and a big brake kit but that's the difference between built and not bought. For the record, I am unbiased because I like Hondas too, I'm actually building a 2000 civic coupe right now and I love that car. With what I put into both cars I could have bought the race ready type r but again, where is the fun in that. Since it's track ready there is nothing to really upgrade right, and if you do upgrade suspension and stuff on the type r then it wasn't worth buying a race ready car since those are parts that most people would change anyway. And then there is of course awd, which easily makes the wrx the best choice in the end. We all have our own opinions but I've already beat several type r's (lots of people have them here in So cali) and I'm still just rocking a jb4 and running e50 blend as far as any tuning goes. The type r is waaay overpriced for a fwd car and is more of a novelty civic with a type r badge just to make it cost more, plus it's ugly. But in it's defense, wrx guys think the vb is ugly too so there's that. I happen to love the look of the vb.
i owned a 2018 FK8.. they are special sure, but with the price dif, you could make a WRX walk it, not only on track, but as a daily too. CTRs are pretty uncomfortable once you start modding them. not to mention good luck putting the power down.
Alot of wrong information. I bet you've never even sat in a fl5. E85 support was just released with just that and a tune your getting almost 400/400. Add fbo and your 440/400 your not getting that with the Subaru. And that's stock turbo. You have guys already over 600 wheel on stock engines and clutches. So by all means please do some actual research before you spout off a bunch of incorrect information
If you open the driver door and read the vehicle tire and loading information, the combined weight for occupants and cargo should never exceed 308kg or 680 lbs. They engineers decided to make it fout seater so they could safely sell to global markets, including fatties in the western market.
I got my 2022 wrx sport brand new for $37,000. Local civic type R with 3000km is $65,000……..what a joke lol (Canadian prices) And sport comes with everything except the C headlights, ultrasuede seats, eyesight stuff
Why such a hp/tq difference especially considering the Civic is .4l less displacement? As far as I’m concerned the body build quality is much better than the WRX. The hood flex/bounce on my WRX drives me crazy.
Get a proper tune on the wrx from BP and it'll crush the civic. Also a few grand of suspension/brake mods and it'll also handle just as well. All that and you'll still have 20k left over given Type-R markups. For the hood, just unscrew the rubber bumpers by one turn and no more hood bouncing around. WRX does require you tinker and know it in and out. To me, that's a bonus.
@HeavyMetalWRX Glad you mentioned this, I mentioned it in another comment before I saw this one but that 25 psi can't really go much higher without catastrophic failure or a lot of work done to strengthen the motor. Turn the subie up to 25psi and you're well above that measly 315 hp that the type r has... On paper, the wrx always looks waaay inferior but I actually like that because when I smoke these type r's and gr corollas it makes me feel that much better knowing that they overpaid for a "built track car"
@@KushestWRX this isnt exactly true. You can turn up the FL5 quite a bit. That motor has forged internals etc. Where the problem is, is putting the power down. You cannot compete with AWD with a FWD no matter how big a tire you have up front. Thats why honda guys are all spending 20k making their shit box eg hatch awd with a kswap. its the budget recipe to kill super cars.
I was seriously considering the type R even though I have never really wanted to be a civic guy. It just sounded like a fun drive. Then I saw that it's not an auto transmission and that killed it. Really nice and looks fun but I am super happy with my WRX. Awesome video. Must have been a blast to drive!
Im surprised about you feeling like it was smaller- did you mean interior? Because when I drove one, it feels like a bit of a boat on the road. That being said, I'm coming from a decade in a BRZ. I echo your sentiments about cheap mirror, and the backup camera is also laughably piss poor.
Yea I meant interior wise. I think even exterior it is a smaller car than a WRX so it makes sense. Coming from a BRZ which is basically a go-kart I could see you having that feeling about any car you drive haha
the wrx is only slower stock... and a stock vb wrx walks a stock sti.. trust me i own both an sti and a vb wrx. the wrx is way faster with mods. its not even close, but it doesnt feel as special

Irs above the WRX but only by a little (260whp/268tq). The price is also interesting to talk about because we have so many trims but the Type R still has markups in some places. With the amount of power the VB wrx is putting out for cheap, that extra money can easily be used for mods and you can gap any Type R for prob under 4k. Plus, I feel Honda reliability has declined. Don’t know why.
The accord turbo manual is a better car to get if coming from a wrx, you can easily modify it to make type r power and they look great and not much heavier
its not about the power though.....its the suspension and the diff. You would need to add a diff, sport seats, a new suspension, and the tune to make the accord "similar" to a civic R.
So here's the thing. I have a kind of doodoo camera. I also was not expecting to make this video and I had limited room. It's not one of my better ones for sure but I figured I'd still drop it.
There's a hour long comparison on another channel comparing the fl5 vs a 5.0 that's 10 grand more. I won't spoil the outcome for you. Go watch it for yourself
add into the equation the average skilled driver trying to reach 90% of the CTR's and the TR's limits vs. an equally skilled driver letting N-mode (N Track Sense) do all the work with the DCT on a $26K Kona N, and you have the Kona N winning everytime: straight or track.

I couldn't find a typeR for under 60k. Almost the same problem as GR Corolla.
There are so many cars that are far superior for 60-65k... and lets keep in mind is FWD. I owned an FK8 for 8 months, added power modifiers and all it did was spin the front end in first and second gear. The type R is only good in stock format or oem+
Bunch of broke MF can't afford it
The mark up craze is pretty much over for these. The most I see it 2K over in accessories. But a lot out there for MSRP.
The AWD is the deciding factor for me, I would be driving a civic is they had AWD
For that price, it should 100% be awd... they made awd civics in japan... so the "heritage" part can be thrown out the window. Its just harder to balance a car for the NBR with AWD... and its harder to cheat like honda did and get away with it.
After driving fwd a lot I have to agree that it gets old spinning all the time. "Look there's a puddle let's spin" 😂
@@juanticimothe civic ferio was AWD but wasn't a type r, it was mainly for safety for snowy areas
GR Corolla is worth checking out. I love mine.
I’ve always been a Honda boy but I turned to the subie side because of stupid type r mark ups. I’m now a Proud owner of a new WRX.
I could appreciate both. The type r is a precision weapon. And the new wrx is a performance bargain with great bones and a great potential.
Love your commentary, thanks for sharing!
and the Civic is attractive. I won't ever forgive Subaru nor trust them ever again.
I agree with your review, I absolutely love my Type R, but man I still feel the pain of those $750+ payments.

@@BitcoinTo100K Very true.
now, I didnt tune the 23 vb limited I had but, Im in a 24 golf gti and it is faster. It does lack the punch at low (2500) rpms but when you get going it's crazy. Love your vids. Actually wish I still had my vb, but such is life. Glad to see you truckin on. I think you're gonna buy the next sti whenever it drops. Again, love the vids dude.
If you would have tuned it then you wouldn't have gotten the golf, I promise...
You should get into the Civic Hatchback Sport Touring. They should have made the back seats just like the Sport Touring!
But then you have to suck up the multi-year payments on it, and though it might be fun in the beginning, after the “honeymoon phase” is over, those monthly payments are going to hit hard…
Best bet is to buy vehicles after a couple years.
It's remarkable. Def worth it. My girl got a wrx and I got a ctr
Type r was a bit more expensive and was used but in immaculate condition with 30k miles.
love the Wrx but still wondering what it
This type R is a 4 seater car😂 thank you for the video I was hoping to see this video coming from a vb owner !
Type R is a great ride and Honda is known to have one of the best feeling manuals.
Oh you know I was going to tune in for this!
M3.. take it from someone whos got both a 550whp wrx vb and a g80 m3.
One day my crx will be awd, k swapped with a turbo, a proper Honda.
yes the civic type r with upgraded valves , springs , suspension , engine tuning is gonna obviously be better than a base model wrx
It’s listed as a 4 seater that’s why the cup holders are there.
If I win a good amount of money from lottery, this is one of the few things I’d use that money for. Then just enjoy life
I know someone paying $880 a month for one and after interest will have paid $66k total. Quite the price for a hopped up civic
Hate red interior! Had been in one it’s nice at first but kinda odd in my opinion
Classic Type R feature. Fanboys would go nuts if they didn’t.
I have thought about that ...but it I promise you now, it will not be a positive video.
I just rented a type r for a weekend and also own a wrx and an elantra n. curious how ill feel by sunday.
2005 type R?

And sport comes with everything except the C headlights, ultrasuede seats, eyesight stuff
Why such a hp/tq difference especially considering the Civic is .4l less displacement? As far as I’m concerned the body build quality is much better than the WRX. The hood flex/bounce on my WRX drives me crazy.
@@truckinguy92 the WRX is pretty detuned from the factory. Civic type R is at 25 psi and the WRX maxed at 13 on the factory tune.
@@Tyrgoth99for real man... Built and not bought for the win.....
@@KushestWRX this isnt exactly true. You can turn up the FL5 quite a bit. That motor has forged internals etc. Where the problem is, is putting the power down. The accord turbo manual is a better car to get if coming from a wrx, you can easily modify it to make type r power and they look great and not much heavier
