I've got a 400 and was reading the manual, but was unclear exactly what it meant. This is clear, concise, and helps a ton. One thing to add, and it may be a matter of preference and differ on the 650, but my manual states a quarter turn back instead of an eighth. Other than that, killer!

If TH-cam was up to date with 2021 technology I could post you a picture of my chopper build in the comments but they won't allow me to do that because then we can hang out in the comments and trade pictures and build and we could learn something and they wouldn't like that very much

This is for when you put new clutches in?
The previous owner of my xs650s-2 installed new clutches and it has issues going into neutral from a stand still. He recommended shifting into neutral while rolling to avoid issues.
Do you think this adjustment will help that issue?

this is how you adjust clutch through life of the clutch. It could not hurt the issue.

My 1981 XS 650 is making a clacking noise and it’s definitely the clutch. I tried your technique but it still didn’t solve the issue. Any ideas? Thanks

How can you tell if your clutch plates are worn out?

    • @jordancailes8383

tony jara it will slip, put it in to a higher gear when driving, and go full throttle, if the RPMs go up but your speed doesn’t, it’s slipping and needs replacing

Would i use this method to move the friction zone closer to the handle bar? I feel like its too far out there for my fingers

Even when I move the adjuster at the handle perch all of the way in there is still no slack in the line. I’m trying to remove the top side of the cable from the bike tone able to lube the cable, but I can’t because there is no slack when it is all of the way in. What can I do?

    • @nightflyer12345

what I would try is go to the adjuster on side of engine loosen the lock nut then loosen the adjuster screw to give some play in the cable. If that don't work I think the cable cover is a bit to long and not enough cable is sticking out. in that case correct cable is in order. Or you can cut some cover off one end to make it work. hope this helps
