What a terrific lesson you have given me, a big thanks. I had to put 3 washers in as the clutch was tight against the cases and without your tutorial I would be at a total loss as to what was happening. Thanks

thank you for your feedback it makes it all worthwhile if it helps someone else.
Ironically my rebuilt engine now has the same problem. I had a small washer left over after the build and now I know where it should have been fitted ! The previous owner must have fitted it but as I bought the engine already stripped I wasn't aware of it .

Sadly, I have the early clutch and had to replace the thick spring washer with a star one due to the 3rd washer I added -no tab washer on the early shaft- and it -the star- failed. So I Limped home clutchless, running at traffic lights to slip into 1st. Again, due to your tutorial, confidently took the cover off, found the reason -loose basket-, removed the 3rd washer now in 3 pieces, -why?-, found that I didn't need it any more -why?- put it all back with the thick split spring washer and so far have a clutch that feels new and smooth. I bought the bike new in 1973; done 164,000 miles with no work down below and the clutch plates have worn .5mm while 3mm is allowed. I guess living in Rural NZ has helped with few stops. Any way, my whole point is that the time you spent making the video allowed me to tackle these problems confidently and, if ever you visit Warkworth NZ let me know. Thanks John D

Hey John sorry to have missed your last message . i don't monitor this google account anymore . i need to transfer my videos to my new account some time. You can always contact me through my current google youtube channel , search for, ' john cooper xs650'
Glad to hear that your clutch installation went so well ...a testament to your care and attention to detail . So many owners complain of poor clutch operation and its usually due to slapdash assembly.
Thank you for your invitation to visit you in your wonderful Country , if I ever get there (fear of flying ) I'll be sure to look you up and we'll go for a ride together.
      You take care buddy .

Mine has a thrust washer and flat needle roller, which may be after market, but mine is an XS2, so perhaps that is why it is different. Interesting.

I'm working on the clutch for my '72 xs2. (Just got it as a project bike) and the clutch is stiff stiff. And when I took this apart, there's o-ring type rubber gaskets under each of the plates.... I have the original factory manual, the Haynes, and getting the Clymer soon. And all the videos I've watched too. And don't see these anywhere?! Wtf? You think the PO didn't know what he was doing and added them? Could they be the cause of my clutch not moving?

sorry to have missed your message Matt.
There shouldn't be anything fitted between the clutch plates . I can only assume that the previous owner fitted the rubber O rings to help separate the clutch plates to improve operation and cure a dragging clutch
My advice for this sort of problem is to strip the clutch and fit new plates and a good mineral oil then go through every part of the clutch operating system from lever to clutch pack looking for stiffness, binding, dragging or friction marks and correct it.
hope you got your clutch sorted Matt.
      all the best

@@KLR-650 interesting .............thank you for the advice . I am not familiar with the early engines and wasn't aware of the rubber rings
