Catch and cook giant mussels - finding large mussels in tide pools

  • We went out digging for big mussels during a low tide on the Oregon coast. It was a super minus tide, and this exposed many rocks, which had mussels grown all over them. We also dug for gooseneck barnacles.

Hey guys, I know California is different from Oregon. This was filmed in Oregon, and shellfish was open during this video. Here is the ODFW website (this is my bible and I check it religiously since I do a lot of crabbing/clamming in Oregon). www.oregon.gov/ODA/programs/FoodSafety/Shellfish/Pages/ShellfishClosures.aspx . Tools can be used for harvesting mussels in Oregon (P.82 of the 2019 regs). Peace out and may your life be surrounded by spitless camels!!

PK I thought you cooked/ steamed mussels with the shell closed and when it open up during cooking you knew it was good to eat and finished cooking... Is it fine to do it the way you did and how do you know when it’s finished cooking?? Thanks for the video and if you answer.. I’m hungry now and can smell a white wine broth steaming some seafood already.

Spitless camels? lol. That's a myth. I "lived" for a short time in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, and Iraq, and never met a camel that didn't do Red Man chew (or whatever brand they chew there), and try to put a glob of it in my face. I think it's how they show their affinity towards new folks. O.o

10:21 we call that camarones in Spain, they do "tortilla de camarores" in the South of Spain, really tasty 😋
      www.recetasdeescandalo.com/tortillitas-o-tortitas-de-camarones-receta-tipica-de-cadiz/
13:04 We love barnacles in Spain, the way we eat them at my house is grab it by the shell and put all the rest in your mouth and cut it off by a bite, then take out and suck the inside out(bite the lower part a bit to loosen it), then open the shell and eat the insides also (some people don't eat the insides or don't bother since its little meat), its delicious and really expensive in Christmas time in Spain, Barnacles from Galicia are the best.
      #
other people also just twist the head off but that can waste meat and also splatter salty water around... only okey if you are eating outside i guess.

I like mussels steamed in white white with aromatics...first clean mussels, then sauté chopped onion, green pepper, garlic, celery (just a bit-maybe a few small leaves) in butter and olive oil. Add your favorite white wine-I use pinot Gris or Chardonnay-and bring to boil. Add mussels and steam till they open. Their juices combined with the sauté make a great sopping sauce for garlic bread to go with the mussels. Yum!

We were at roads end in Lincoln City that week, the minus tides gave everyone access the northern "secret beaches" that are only easily accessible by really low tides. Huge population of giant muscles and barnacles, so much structure was exposed for later surf fishing but that area is protected. The kids were loving the hermit crabs and anemone in the pools. Starfish population looks like it is coming back. The Oregon coast is a treasure to enjoy and protect.

    Hey PK,
I live over here in Bandon and came across some of those really large mussels. I just threw them right on the grill and when they split open pulled them off and added some garlic and butter. I just pulled the tongue out and its root which seemed to be the chewiest part. but with that gone they were very tender and delish. I ended up grabbing about 40 of them and cooked into a cioppino for the guys at work. So maybe just cook a little longer and pull out the tongue? Looks good brother!

Big mussels are nice but mussels are strainers. They keep all the dirt they catch during straining. It is wise to get smaller mussels for eating since they did not catch so much dirt from the water. Keep that in mind when catching them.

Nice video! Love the catch and cook! Just fyi for other viewers, hand tools are NOT allowed in California. In California you can ONLY harvest by hook and line or by hands, NO tools. Also before harvesting shellfish, you should call the bio toxin line to make sure they are safe to harvest. You will also need a fishing license. One last thing...goose neck barnacles are not legal to harvest in California. So basically check your local regulations.😉

@@Ira88881 I don't know where you are going with that question, but in every state there are regulations for what you harvest. This is for sustainability. For example in Oregon it is illegal to keep female Dungeness crabs but here in California it is legal for recreational fishing. I was just pointing out a few things in response to his video- the tools and gooseneck barnacles. Because I'm sure you know that there are people out there that will view it and think it's ok to go anywhere and just start harvesting without even bothering checking regulations. I see that all the time.

Have you ever harvested limpets or turban snails? Maybe do a catch and cook using them. Also those goose neck barnacles are really good to eat. I don't know how readily available sea urchins are in your area but uni is very tasty and harvesting the urchins has the added benefit of being good for the environment. Purple urchins are incredibly invasive.

Cool video PK! Enjoyed Alec’s video as well. Did you know the old timers would pull mussels off the rocks for surf perch bait?! Just sayin...

I've never seen this done before. I said the exact same thing. If you like seafood you're in heaven!!! Is that normally the way muscles are harvested?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

For the most part yea. People use different tools, but crow bar and a knife usually works for me.

*Why are shellfish so huge in the PNW? Geoducks, these mussels, other clams, crabs. Even those Percebes. Everything there seems several times bigger than anywhere else in the world.*
