    Thanks for another well made video. I went to Seaside one time and the sand was like glass. We couldn't detect a thing. This young 10 year old boy would run around and spot a clam every couple minutes for his dad. He was seeing something we definitely didn't. He was like a magician.

    Nice video! Razors are soooo yummy! I'm from Southern Oregon but have only caught razors in Alaska. We mostly go for gapers and cockles here on the south coast.
    A couple suggestions:
    1) Clams toughen as you cook them, eventually getting the texture of a rubber band. Typically you only want to cook around 90 seconds per side to get a nice tender clam.
    2) Use unsalted butter to reduce the saltiness.

    for a camping trip, I just pre-mix some panko with four in the bag I will shake the fish, clams, rabbit, quail, deer liver or whatever in and then you can season or salt it to preference...without the unpronounceable ingredients you get in some of those mixes. Great vid, its always fun to see your take on all the activities that I also do.

Many of us pass up a chance to catch fish or seafood because we don't know what is or isn't safe to eat or how to prepare it and what parts to avoid. Hats off to you for cleaning and cooking it right on the beach or in the parking lot so we can learn. Having not grown up in the area we would not know otherwise. Thanks..

    2018 and it just came up on my puter? Clamming was a big family thing when I was a kid growing up in Washington. My grandparents, my folks and even my older sister. That was in the 50s and what we called a clam gun was a long thin tapered shovel and you found the hold and dug like hell! As you were digging so was the clam! Dang I miss those times!

    I looked at the title of this video and thought to myself "this guy is mistaken! Those aren't Razor Clams! They look nothing like a Razor Clam!" Imagine my surprise when I looked it up on Wiki and saw that it was!
    Here in the UK, we also use the term 'Razor clam' or 'Razorshell' to describe the Atlantic jackknife clam, (spp Ensis directus) which has a shell like an old fashioned 'straight' or 'strop' razor, used by men to shave themselves until the advent of the Bic safety razor!
    The clams in your video are Pacific Razor clams (spp.Siliqua Patula), which are mainly found on the Coastal waters off the North Western United States.
    We have a very similar looking clam in the UK which we call a 'Gaper' Clam (spp. Tresus Capax) which also looks similar to the legendary Geoduck Clams of South East Asia! (spp. Panopea Generosa)
    Great video and got my mind thinking laterally! :)
    FYI, Whilst the Atlantic jackknife clam is in the same family as the Pacific razor clam, the Jacknife clam is in a completely different genus!

    Razor clams are currently in quarantine in California. Not in Oregon? Lucky for you guys! The California Department of Public Health has warned recreational harvesters for the past couple of years that Domoic Acid levels were too high here in Northern CA for them to be a safe harvest. Otherwise I would be all over them :) Nice Video!

    • @catchncookcalifornia1574
      @catchncookcalifornia1574 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem, I was just stating that they are present in CA but the Department of Health suggest you do not take them most years as they are toxic from filter feeding on naturally toxic plankton.
      looks like OR does not have so many issues?

    • @Bob-fz7pd
      @Bob-fz7pd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Google it. No one has ever died from red tide poisoning in Cali. I believe this is an attempt to discourage recreational fishing and not the first. Red tides dont effect large stretches of beach. When they happen there very limited so closing the season because of a claimed generalised high reading doesnt make sense.

    Can you salt them out? One way we’ve gone clamming for razors when we didn’t have a shovel was to pour a pile of salt into the hole, the clam will try to expel the salt and you keep pushing the salt back in and viola the clam will burrow itself up and out of the sand. Give it a try I’m sure a container of salt is cheaper that a claminator

      Yes, I think many people commented about using salt. But I'm not sure if that is legal or not here in Oregon. I didn't see anyone on the beach using salt. Best to play it safe.

    Aren't you suppose to fill the hole afterward?

      Not on a beach. The tide does it. Go back the next day and every hole will be gone.

      @@namtrinh4695 15 is the limit, and continuously checking with the department of fish and wildlife for new updates. covid19 shut down clamming here in Wa since March 2020.. my fruit trees are missing out on valueable clam guts and clam nectar for healthy fruit and rapid growth! Hopefully we get some Fall & Winter digs this season.. GL

      @@namtrinh4695 best thing to do is just keep searching the Department of Fish & Wildlife, or call them for clamming dates which usually are heavy in Fall & Winter, but not to far fetched to see some Spring Time Day Digs, but not as often as the fall and winter night digs!

    Looks great--but there MUST be a lower calorie, healthier approach. Maybe refined olive oil, even a baked recipe. Thanks for posting, looks great
