In this video I take a look at a style of 46 defense being run by the #1 ranked player on the Xbox One MUT H2H leaderboard Obiwan Shikobe. There are three distinct reasons as to why I think the 46 Normal defense has risen to the top of the tier list early here in the Madden 18 year and why I think it will be staying there for the foreseeable future. Have been running this formation since I started playing madden best formation it can stop the run and with a good user you can shut down the pass.

Yeah but when you’re playing a run heavy team or a dual threat QB , put a spy on the opposite side of the RB (shotgun formation) and you’ll stuff any run of you have stick skills like me.
I played the Bears in Madden 07. 46 defense is common like Jumbo.

Faced an online ranked opponent last night. Ran 4-6 normal cover 3 defense. Just passed in the flats and play action.
Roger V I run cover 3 hard flat all game and adjust if they throw corner routes
Bubble Bass but then you leave the second level where your TE or drag route is open. It's all about taking what the defense gives you and mixing up your playcalling. I'm not an madden expert but my football knowledge just let's me know how to recognize certain things. I love a good chess match in the game. Which system you play on?
Bubble Bass i been burning cover 3 of all types all year. Manipulating cpu ai is to easy. A users first read is the quick pass so i set up a quick pass and bam my rb open deep middle of field. Gauranteed 25 yards

5:50 Thats interesting about how the 46 speed package doesn't get the weak box penalty. If you hold left trigger and push left stick down (not sure what this is called) with the dime package, can i avoid the weak box penalty as well?
+MeecrobMan What you are describing would be run committing, and I'm not 100% sure but I would assume that you would avoid the weak box by doing that. At the cost of giving up a TD if they happen to throw of course
@fsm What is the first play in the 46 to get that pressure and what is the alignment ?
+Nick Tabish It is out of a Cover 3 shell but can be replicated with any play out of the formation. Litez has a video breaking it down on his TH-cam channel called Madden Daily
46 for me when they are driving and we close to the end zone. 46 too early will get you burnt.

What do think is the best 3-4 defensive playbook?
KING SAW Hmm 3-4, maybe Buffalo? I've been running 4-3 so far this year so I don't have much knowledge of the different 3-4 books right now.
NE have 3-4 and 4-3 sets best defense or 46 normal jags or bengals
With all this talk of agil backs being useful now....are they actually or are powerbacks still the way to go?
Frank Snow I think juking is so strong this year you're putting yourself at a disadvantage if you have one who can't juke imo
Do you know if the same principles apply for Madden 19?
You can apply the same concepts for sure but I'm not sure if the blitz will still work the same way

How do you beat a defense like this?
NYGIANTSFAN 2017 Well offense is still king in Madden 18, so there are a lot of options. First and foremost you have to ID the blitzing linebacker as the Mike to get your pass protection right. Then some concepts you could look at would be attacking the flats since generally there will only be one defender out there or you could put the user defender in a situation where he has to pick a route to chase over the middle and throw it to another one at a different level of the field.
Haha been using 46 since Madden first went to ps3! Haha it was unfair too if you packed the Dline close and blitzed the mlb, jamming receivers and having the safety cheat down... mlb would get through so quick! Took down MANY opponents by using that defense because you had to throw it quick and hope your wr wasn't jammed. Sweeps, screens and fly routes with a top wr would be the only way to stop it, but I've BEEN using that defense for years lol great to know I was validated... Retired Madden player now though...
+3kidsnwifey Haha yeah it was tough a few years back and then kind of went away for a little while and now is back on the come up. I think it has always been relevant in the hands of the right person, even last year you saw guys running it when Nickel Blitz and DB Fire 2 Press was basically all you saw
can you fake blitz this year? It's been awhile since I've played a current version of Madden but if you can fake blitz like in the past, then I think that would bring more people down in the box that can help stop the run even though they were not originally assigned to stop the run and it would make it hard for the center to do that ID the Mike crap because those fake blitzes create weird clusters. But knowing madden they probably took that out so noobs can move the ball easier.
Sheldon Smith Yes you can still fake blitz this year, that's a good point! That could definitely help make the box more intimidating to run against and confuse the offense in pass protection
FSM HoldeN that's what I used to do in the past. If you fake blitz and reassign and do that several times fast, that creates kind of a nano shake blitz. Combine that with manually assigning certain players to wr's, te's and rb' sit can create a difficult read.

Yeah pretty much. If you come out in a personnel package with 6 or more DB's, so Dime/Dollar/Quarters, and they come out in a set with multiple TE's/RB's and run a power type of play then your team will instantly get pancaked.

Avatar DCUO You just have to be sure to match personnel this year, if they come out with less than 3 receivers you shouldn't be in anything higher than Nickel in terms of DB count.
EA at it again. They need to patch this 6 dbs in a 46 would get ran all over speed package should still be revognized as a weak box when you sub in dbs. Also still cross manning. This formation allows you to play madden 17 all over again
I agree that the 46 speed package should be recognized as a weak box against power running sets. It seems like they programmed it as a simple true/false check based on the formation and alignment not the actual personnel that is on the field.
On the 46, you can't man the SS or LB on a WR, it only lets you man the TE or FB,RB.
+4Play You can man up the MLB and LOLB on anyone you want. You can only man the ROLB and SS on opposing players who are on the same side of the field as them

I dont even scheme for my defense. Its been pointless sinse madden 10 when they had nano blitzes. If you blitz it gets burnwd by quick passes, if you scheme the qb playmakesers a wideout to adjust and u get beat. I get 2-5 sacks a game just calling a fair game. I send pressure on certain passing situations. And if im playing against top players with unstoppable offenses, i just eat clock when i have ball. Ive been known to have the ball for 2 qrts with 10 min drives

He had 2 open on the play it could be a gg if he knew what the hell he was doin i been smakin this D set up ppl try and run this mess and i drop them off all the time...
Tip to killin it take what they give u yards is yards no need to rush to score so take yo damn time and pick them apart... Its simple!!! They will get mad at u taking 4 yard gains and change up they D and thats when u go for the kill... Easy Work
milehigh Once again, it is easy to locate the weakness of a defense when looking at it on a 10 minute video. If you think a player of Shikobe's caliber would run the same setup every time and not adjust to what the offense is doing you are mistaken

You rite people will use this D all day but im sure u know that from playin online games i just dont want some of the players to think just using this D is somehow gonna make u get wins at a top level u gonna need to study and mix up just as u was sayin because as i was just sayin you can get beat using it... All you gotta do against this is come out 5 wide and max protect. It's not enough Dbs on the field to cover the pass somebody is always open
The only player I can cross man is the MLB. Every other DB/LB can only be manned up to the players on that side.

Mr.Durden yeah, absolutely. I played a guy who came out a Quarter D blitzing nickel corners against my 2 RB/2 TE sets and I had trouble running the ball until I adjusted. In real football there's no way you can stop any run play with 3 lineman and 1 LB against TEs and FBs, I understand the game isn't perfect but people who utilize this cheesey shit should be flagged
Mr.Durden You're right, going speed package against heavy personnel should trigger the weak box mechanic and result in pancakes. That's on EA to fix if they want to. I'm just telling people why it's popular, if you play online at a decent level then you are guaranteed to come across this. I never claimed to be a coach.
Most people that play sports games online have the win at any cost mentality. They will exploit every single glitch, broken mechanic, or oversight in the game. They will spam plays that are all but unstoppable because of bad AI. And if all else fails they'll use every stall tactic and frustrating BS hoping they'll get a cheap win by causing their opponent to rage quit.
In that community there is very little of people actually trying to scheme and play games in a realistic way and have a legitimate competition. It's just a bunch of people trying to find the parts of the game that are broken and exploit them to no end. It has long been the absolute worst cesspool of the general gaming community.

lol I’ve struggled coming to this reality more and more each Madden. It used to be a chess game and about user skills now it’s all cheese plays and glitchy blitzes. It’s crazy they have all these videos teaching people these schemes because they can’t win fair game. But he people spend they money on their product let them do what they want 🤷🏾♂️
